The good news is that they ap-pear to be present in smaller numbers this year.Municipalities learned fromthe infestation last summer and hope to deal with the spongy moth, also known as the Lymantria Dis-par Dispar (LDD) moth, and stayon top of the issue this year. "We did some tree vacuuming,"said Scott McKay, the City of Pick-ering's forestry management coor- dinator. "We vacuumed the egg masses that were left from themoths last year so there would beless hatching of the caterpillars."The caterpillars were most present in the city's west end, near Rouge National Urban Park. The city also injected treeswith the product TreeAzin, which kills the caterpillars whenthey eat the leaves. "We had a colder winterwhich may lessen the im- pact of the caterpillar,"McKay said. The cooler spring might have delayed their hatching, but the caterpillars havebeen spotted in Pickering,McKay said. The city is monitoring the situation."It's an insect that isn'tgoing away," McKay said. "We're never going to elim-inate it. We're just best try-ing to handle the situa-tion." Jennifer Smith, theTown of Whitby's managerof operations of parks, fireand operational services, said the town's current fo-cus is on educating resi-dents on how to recognize and reduce the impact ofspongy moths they mayfind on trees. "This education is an es- sential part of how the townworks to minimize this inva-sive species in our commu- nity," Smith said. "We alsocontinually monitor the lo- cal spongy moth populationin order to evaluate the needfor any further action." ABOUT SPONGY MOTHS According to the town'swebsite, the invasive insect was introduced in Ontarioin 1969. They range fromfive to 60 millimetres in length, and are dark andhairy with five pairs of bluedots and six pairs of reddots on the back. They feed on most hard-wood trees. Healthy treescan withstand one to sever- al years of severe defolia-tion by the moth.Under normal circum-stances, defoliated trees should regrow their leavesin two to three weeks or byearly July depending on the year, the website said. LAST YEAR'S NIGHTMARE Whitby resident AlexMasur's large propertywas hit hard last year."There's billions of them," he said at the time."At their peak, they werecrawling up our house." Some of Masur's treesare now gone, such as thelarge evergreens."They devoured those trees within two weeks," hesaid, but added his appletrees have regenerated. Masur noticed this yearthe caterpillars have re-turned but they're smalland there don't appear to be as many."All in all, hopefully wewon't have a repeat of last year," he said. "That wasscary not only for the trees but for us. These thingswere everywhere." WHAT CAN YOU DO? According to the Toron-to And Region Conserva- tion Authority (TRCA),from May to July, residentscan place a burlap bandaround tree trucks where caterpillars will hide dur-ing the heat of the day. They should check bandsdaily and scrape caterpil- lars into a container withsoapy water for a few days and dispose in the garbage. Pickering encouragesthis as well, calling it themost environmentally friendly way to address thesituation."You have to manuallyremove the caterpillars," McKay said. "It doesn't pre-vent the caterpillars fromgoing up the tree." Those doing this jobshould wear gloves sincecaterpillar hairs can causeskin irritation or allergies. Pickering is offeringfree burlap kits to resi-dents, available at GeorgeAshe Library, 470 KingstonRd., Pickering. Residents can reportsightings to the toll-free In- vading Species Hotline at 1-800-563-7711 or e-mail in-fo@invadingspecies.com.Sightings can also be sub- mitted to EDDMaps.org.Visit yourleaf.org formore information.
