De Jager underwent abattery of tests, but noth-ing was found to explainher symptoms. "I was lying in bed intears," she says. "I couldn'ttake care of my three little girls."Then, she started re-searching breast implantillness — she got implants in 2009 and says no riskwere discussed at the time, just the price and "how big Iwanted them." Online, she found ahuge community of womendescribing symptoms just like hers. Some Facebooksupport groups for breastimplant illness have thou-sands of members. The term "breast im-plant illness" is both con-troversial and poorly un- derstood. There are no diagnostictests or diagnostic criteria, and many doctors cite med- ical literature that saysthere is no straight-lineconnection between the symptoms women are ex-periencing and their im-plants.According to breastcan- cer.org, breast implant ill-ness is "a term that somewomen and doctors use to refer to a wide range ofsymptoms that can developafter undergoing recon-struction or cosmetic aug- mentation with breast im-plants."De Jager says she wasmet with eye rolls from doctors more than oncewhen she asked whetherher implants could be caus- ing her symptoms."It's scary that it's notrecognized as an illness,"she says. "I felt demeaned. I wasn't heard. I was made tofeel like it was all in myhead." Since having her im-plants removed Feb. 3 ofthis year, De Jager says 90 per cent of her symptomsare gone. She is now making it hermission to raise awareness of breast implant illness. She wants to see themedical community do more to study the condi-tion and is urging womento ask questions before get-ting implants — and to raise concerns if they haveimplants and are experi-encing worrying symp- toms. Carey De Jager recent-ly had breast implants re-moved after years of deal- ing with debilitating healthsymptoms that she be-lieves were caused by theimplants. She is one of a growing number of womenraising concerns about thehealth impacts of breast implants and wants themedical community to domore to study the issue andadvise women of possible risks.De Jager's story is famil-iar to Lindsey Evans. The 38-year-old Picker-ing resident got implants in2012 and says she "almostimmediately" started to see subtle changes in herhealth that grew more seri-ous as time went on. Symptoms like exhaus-tion, headaches, loss of ap-petite, weight loss, rashes, anxiety — her hair even started falling out. "I felt like I was going cra-zy. I couldn't figure out whatwas wrong with me ... Mydoctor didn't know whatwas wrong. I felt like I wascompletely falling apart." Evans says she had a"light-bulb moment" whenshe saw a post on Facebookabout breast implant ill- ness. "I was sitting there cry-ing after I read some of the stories, I was like 'this isme!' I felt like I might final-ly have an answer."Evans had her implants removed in 2021 and like DeJager, she says most of hersymptoms have now re- solved. "I find it so frustratingthat there is almost no in- formation about breast im-plant illness out there. Alot of doctors haven't heardof it. A lot of women haven't heard of it. And there areall these women who arereally sick," she says. Dr. Vishal Sharma is anAjax plastic surgeon whoperforms breast augmen-tation surgeries as well as breast implant removal —in recent years, he has seenan increase in women ask-ing to have implants re-moved, in some cases be-cause they believe their im-plants are making them ill. "We do seem to see thisconstellation of symptoms. It's still fairly poorly under-stood and definitely the hottest topic in plastic sur-gery these days. A lot of re-search is being done to try and identify what exactlythe cause is" Sharma says."I think it's a bit unfair todeny patients the existence of this all together. Thesepatients have real symp-toms. They are not hypo- chondriacs. They need peo-ple to listen to them. It's re-ally quite incredible howmany patients seem to im- prove once they have theirimplants out."Sharma says "the jury is still out" on whether that isa placebo effect or thesymptoms are beingcaused by implants — how- ever he says data suggests50 to 84 per cent of patientsget partial or complete res-olution of symptoms fol-lowing implant removal. There are four manu-facturers that sell breast implants in Canada and allimplants undergo a scien-tific review for safety andeffectiveness before Health Canada issues a medicaldevice licence. After breast implants are licensed, Health Cana-da does post-market sur-veillance including moni-toring incident reports from members of the pub-lic and health-care provid-ers. If action is required, it could include recalling im-plants or suspending themanufacturer's licence. For example, HealthCanada recalled Mentor saline implants in March2022 due to "a potentialweakened shell on the patch area which may re-sult in premature defla-tion"— they're the sameimplants De Jager had. Health Canada has alsoflagged the risk of breast-implant associated ana-plastic large cell lympho-ma (BIA-ALCL), a rare can-cer of the immune systemthat can develop next to a breast implant. In 2021, Health Canadadata estimated there were64 confirmed cases of BIA- ALCL in Canada and 25suspected cases. A Health Canada safety review found the rate ofBIA-ALCL in Canada is"significantly higher in pa-tients with macro-textured breast implants comparedto other implants" and in2019, Health Canada sus- pended the licences for Al-lergan's Biocell breast im-plants, which were the only macro-textured implantsavailable in Canada. Sharma says there is alot of misinformation on-line and stresses people should search out "accu-rate information that'sgrounded in science andthat comes from medical professionals" when re-searching anything to dowith breast implants. "I think it's just impor-tant for people to knowwhat they're getting them-selves into. There's no such thing as a risk-free surgery.Implants are not lifetimedevices. Much like a car, they kind of have a shelf- life," he explains. STORY BEHIND THE STORY: Women in Dur-ham who believe theirbreast implants made themsick are finding support and community online, while some local plasticsurgeons are seeing an increase in the number ofpatients asking for breastimplants to be removed. WELLNESS BREAST IMPLANT ILLNESS CONTROVERSIAL, POORLY UNDERSTOOD Carey De Jager is one of a growing number of women raising concerns about the health impacts of breast implants and wants the medical community to do more to study the issue and advise women of possible risks.
