"It is so much more thansoccer," said Tammy Lyle-Gravlev, PFC's All Abilities program co-ordinator."The goal of our program isfun, fitness and friend- ship."In partnership withMixed Ability Sports Cana-da, the Vikings' program offers the opportunity forindividuals of all ages, abil-ities, backgrounds, and ex-perience levels to come to- gether and play. The Mixed Ability mod-el was first developed through rugby in Bradford,U.K. in 2012. Lead by InternationalMixed Ability Sport, the model has grown on a glob-al scale and was introducedin Canada by Abilities Cen- tre in 2020. The Vikings programbegan in 2020 and the firstever competition took place in Oshawa in 2021with 14 mixed ability rugbyteams competing against each other. "We thought runningthe Mixed Ability Programwould be good initiative to round out all the activitieswe could offer," Watkinssaid. The popularity is grow-ing, welcoming everyonefrom athletes who identifyas having a disability, to some new to rugby in gen-eral to experienced playersin men's and women's pro-grams who just wanted to participate."It's sport for every-body," Watkins said. Abilities Centre inWhitby has played a largerole in the Vikings' involve-ment in the program. "It is literally redefininghow we conceptualize par-ticipation and enjoyment in sport," said Kelly Kasp-er, Abilities Centre direc-tor of sport and recreation. She explained "Whenwe look at sport we typical- ly get classified based onage, ability or gender" andthe mixed program createsan opportunity to join to- gether without worryingabout having a medical di-agnosis, or being too old ortoo young."The role that the Vi-kings has played has beenincredible," Kasper said. She said Watkins is atrailblazer for this pro-gram, and since the Vi-kings jumped on board, others across the provincehave come into the fold. She called the Vikings leaders of inclusion andsaid, "they've done an in-credible job."It doesn't hurt the club, either. Watkins said theprogram has increasedmembership, and there are now more than 500 mem-bers."The more members you have in your club, themore successful your club is," he said.Soccer enthusiasts don'thave far to go for an inclu-sive place to play. The All Abilities Pro-gram began in 2008 and isopen to participants ofvarying abilities and prio-ritizes connection and rec-reation for children withdifferent abilities. Partici- pants range from being onthe autism spectrum tohaving physical disabili-ties. The program is not lim-ited to Pickering, and hasmany members from Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa. It fosters friendships be-tween athletes and theirteammates, volunteers and coaches. It improves skilland hand-eye co-ordina-tion, as well as fitness. "Statistics show thatover 50 per cent of childrenwith a disability are not getting the fitness a childshould be getting because there just aren't a lot of pro-grams available for thatparticular demographic,"Lyle-Gravlev said. Pickering resident Mi-chelle Zeenaeme's two sonsare in the PFC's Funda-mentals Junior Soccer Pro-gram and noted she appre-ciates the high ratio of vol-unteers to players. "You know they're safeand they'll guide them," shesaid. "The families that goare very accepting and open and inclusive as well."Her son is on the autismspectrum and her other son is able to play as well, since the program is forchildren of all abilities."He already has compas- sion, but I think it's devel-oped even more for his fel-low athletes," Zeenaeme- said said of her son.She said other programswere either too far away or more expensive. Fundingfrom the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program allowsthe cost to be affordable forfamilies."Families only pay a third of the cost of the pro-gram," Lyle-Gravlev said.A number of PFC AllAbilities programs areavailable. They're current-ly running out of Bay Ridg-es Kinsmen Park due to the dome undergoing repairs. For sponsorship oppor-tunities or to learn moreabout the PFC programs, visit pickeringfc.ca. Tolearn more about the Vi-kings visit vikingsrugby- .ca. "Logan Learns to Play"can be purchased throughPFC or on Amazon.
