The most recent waste-water data in Durhamshows the COVID-19 "sig- nal strength" is high at fiveout of seven sampling sites. Data from April 14 lists the viral signal strength ashigh for sites in Pickeringand Oshawa as well as theDarlington, Newcastle and Courtice sites in Clarington. The signal strength ismedium in Ajax and Whitby. Two weeks ago, all sev-en sites in Durham had amedium signal strength. The April 14 data lists the wastewater trend asstable at the Pickering,Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa andNewcastle sampling sites and decreasing at the Cour- tice and Darlington sites inClarington. Durham started waste- water collection in 2021 asone way of monitoring CO-VID infection trends in the community. Samples are collectedabout three times per weekfrom seven sites in Dur- ham — five water pollutioncontrol plants and two san-itary sewer pumping sta-tions.Durham Region WorksDepartment collects thesamples, which are then analyzed by Ontario TechUniversity to detect COVIDviral fragments. Each sampling site is given a colour coded "sig- nal strength" of high, medi-um or low and a 14-daytrend that is characterized as increasing, stable or de-creasing. Experts say wastewater surveillance has become themost accurate method fordetermining daily casessince the province suspend- ed widespread PCR testing. In past pandemic waves, wastewater signals servedas an early warning that the virus was rising in acommunity. "We need more housingbut we also need the right mix of housing," Schicke-danz says. With the provincial elec- tion coming up, Schicke-danz has his eye on the is-sue, including Bill 109, theMore Homes for Everyone plan, which recently re-ceived royal assent andoutlines how the province plans to address Ontario'shousing crisis. Uxbridge resident A.J.Brandon and his wife, Mel- ody, purchased their firsthome, an Uxbridge town-house, in 2016, but in early2020 they sold it to move closer to work, and foundtheir dream home in Ajax. They lost out on their pre- approved mortgage just be-fore closing when rulessurrounding CERB incomechanged. "It was definitely one ofthe lowest points of my life;it was very much an emo- tional roller-coaster,"Brandon recalls.Prices have only goneup. According to the Toron-to Regional Real EstateBoard, the average price of a home in January andFebruary for both Ajax and Pickering was $1.3 million, and $1.2 million for both inMarch. That includes all types of homes. Bill McLean, aPickering regional coun-cillor, as well as a member of The McLean Group RealEstate, noted many are stillentering the market bypurchasing a condo. "At the end of the day it'scheaper than rent some-times," he says. Some clients are sellingtheir homes, downsizing ormoving away in order togive their adult children a down payment.Meredith Kennedy, president of the DurhamRegion Association of Real- tors (DRAR), says first-time homebuyers especial-ly are being shut out of the market."We need more afford-able housing, whetherthat's subsidized housing or just something to getthem in the door," she said, pointing to loosened rules on secondary units as oneoption.Over the next 10 years,Ontario needs to build at least one million newhomes, says the OHBA. Inthe last decade, only 670,000 homes were built inOntario. Schickedanz says it'simportant that "the nextgovernment ... start to im-plement some recommen- dations from the OntarioHousing AffordabilityTask Force (OHATF)." "There needs to be bet-ter consultation with thehome building and land de-velopment industry and we need to collectively worktogether to break down thebarriers and to bring hous- ing to market faster,"Schickedanz says.In February, the taskforce released a report stat- ing house prices in Ontariohave almost tripled in thepast 10 years, growingmuch faster than incomes. It recommends the Ontariogovernment add 1.5 millionhomes over the next de- cade. The OHATF says Onta-rio can quickly create moresupply by allowing more housing in more locationswithout the need for mu-nicipal approval, and by making better use of trans-portation investments. Insome urban centres, theprovince could look at dic- tating what zoning could bein place for higher densityareas, for example. It says setting uniform provincialstandards for urban de- sign, including buildingshadows and setbacks, would also help.Other rec-ommendations include re-quiring municipalities to limit consultations to thelegislated maximum, andto legislate timelines forapprovals. Schickedanz says devel-opment applications oftensit on municipal desks for too long."We need to cut that timedown substantially to meetthis demand," he says. A couple of decades ago,Schickedanz's developergrandfather would wait just one or two years to re-ceive development approv-als."But now, for instance, the piece that we pur-chased in Clarington, wepurchased that over 12 years ago," he says. "Thepiece of land was inside the urban envelope adjacent tothe building envelope, sowe're not leap frogging."McLean says, "There's always delays in any pro-ject or any application. Iwould like to see it sped up but without taking awaythe value of having com-menting agencies. Espe-cially the public. The pub- lic is the No. 1 commentingagency that I listen to."McLean says there'sonus on the developer aswell to build as quickly aspossible, rather than sit-ting on a property in hopes of flipping it for profit.McLean sees "no magicbullet" to cool down themarket. "I think with the (in-creasing) interest rates, it'scooling people down," he says. "People are still goingto buy. They're not rushinginto it like they were whichwas a good thing." –With files from Moya Dillon STORY BEHIND THESTORY: With the housingmarket still hot and votersheading to the polls in mere weeks, Durham-region.com looked into howthe next provincial govern- ment can improve the situ-ation. NEWS Continued from page 3 'NO MAGIC BULLET' TO COOL DOWN THE MARKET JOHNATHAN SCHICKENDANZ FarSight Homes photo When Abid Himanimade the move from Paki-stan to Ajax in 2013, thereweren't many restaurantsin Durham offering halalfood. "There was no resourcewhere I could find thoseoptions easily," he says, explaining how he often stuck to vegetarian take-out dishes in those earlydays in Canada. Since then, Durham'srestaurant scene has be-come increasingly diverse and halal options aregrowing. In May 2021, Himanicreated the Durham Re-gion Halal Eats Facebookgroup to share halal foodfinds and give a boost to lo-cal businesses. The group has expan- ded to more than 700 mem-bers, with some of the big-gest growth taking placein the last few weeks. "Last week, we had 70new members, the re-sponse is getting better and better," Himani says. The group highlightseverything from burgers and wings to roti and ku-nafa. Himani especially lovesfeaturing small, family-run businesses — one ofhis favourite spots is LaRosh Pakistani and IndianRestaurant in Ajax, whereparatha rolls, biryani and kabab plates are popular. "A lot of people wouldstill go to Toronto, Scar-borough to get their halal food cravings ... I want totell people about the op-tions here so they can sup- port businesses in Dur-ham Region," Himani ex-plains. The group also includesshout-outs to large chains like Pizza Pizza — whichhas halal wings, peppero-ni and ground beef — andMary Brown's Chicken, which has many certifiedhalal locations.During Ramadan, Dur- ham Region Halal Eats hasbeen helpful in directingfoodies to restaurants fea-turing special items such as iftar trays for the mealthat breaks the fast at sun-down, and sehri menus for the early morning mealMuslims eat before thesun rises and fasting be- gins. For example, KarahiBoys in Ajax is open until 4a.m. some days with a spe-cial sehri menu. "Thatis crazy."He spoke about propos- als for the redevelopmentof both large and small pla-zas along Kingston Road,as well as the ones that are on their way up already, such as Universal City, which he describes as "the largest development of itskind in Durham Region."The video garneredmore than 25,000 hits and the City of Pickering sched-uled a meeting betweenRehman and Nilesh Surti,Pickering's manager of de-velopment review and ur-ban design. CITY WEIGHS IN Surti explained the ti-melines for when these de- velopments will come tofruition; all of them vary."All 75 are not going to be built tomorrow," he said. ALL ABOUT BALANCE Surti noted that part ofany successful communityis the balance of commer- cial, recreational and resi-dential uses of property."We do try to mandate creating mixed-used com-munities," he said. TRAFFIC CONCERNS When Rehman noted alot of residents have traffic concerns, Surti said that thenumber of parking spacesthat are required per unit have been decreasing. He said that where thereis high-density develop- ment, there are also plansfor improved infrastruc-ture, such as bus rapidtransit. "Pickering's become ahighly desirable city," Sur- ti said, adding the city has to plan for growth in asmart way. HOUSING OPTIONS Rehman pointed outthat a lot of people are struggling to get into thehousing market due to thelack of supply and the highcosts — an average home in Pickering is now priced at$1.3 million."There's an opportunity with all this new growth tocreate housing choices forour existing residents,"Surti said. William Patrick was born in Scarborough, Ontario on December 14, 1964 to Mike (late) and Mary Bridgeman. Loving husband to Fiona; great Dad to Bill Jr., the pride and joy of his life. Big brother to John (Catherine) and little brother to Mike (Fawn), Doreen, Eileen (Chris), Linda (Glen). Loving uncle to Chris (Angela), Justin (Courtney) and Ashley (Leslie) as well as the younger generation; Liam, Delaney, Sadie, Jack, Kaitlyn, Jacob, Felicity, Isabelle, Madison, Charlotte and Peter. Bill grew up in Pickering, enjoying hockey and baseball in his youth. He went to work in the same field as his Dad, a proud and hard - working member of the Ironworkers Local 721 for 30 + years. His work life was spent in a myriad of jobs, most notably Pearson International Airport, the SkyDome, now known as Roger's Centre and the Trump Hotel. He was also involved in the first wave of wind turbine installations throughout Ontario and many car plant refits in the region. His most recent work adventures were with a close-knit group of guys, building and repairing power towers around southern Ontario. He was affectionately known in the trade as 'Billy Ponytail', as he's had one since his high school days. He only just cut it off, in the past six months, following his cancer journey. Bill was one of those handy guys. He could watch you build or complete a project then take it on himself, whether it be cars, trucks, interlock or home repairs. He had just retired, preparing to refurbish his home, as he never had time while he was working. Bill enjoyed travelling, especially these past few years with Fiona and Bill Jr. Of course, his pre-marriage trips were for musical reasons, finding concerts to enjoy. Fiona brought family travel adventure back into his life, often finding school chums in sunny, foreign locales for them to get together with and enjoy some down time. This included Cuba, Mexico and Canadian road trips closeby or PEI, BC and Lake Louise. A trip to China was an adventure for all of them, though Bill felt his resemblance to Budda was daunting in Fiona's homeland. Light refreshments will follow in the Church Hall. As Bill's wishes were for cremation, the interment at Resurrection Cemetery in Whitby will be at a later date. Donations can be made to the charity of your choice. Or, as Bill was so fond of doing, go visit a friend you haven't seen in a while and share some memories. OBITUARIES | REMEMBERING THE LIVES OF THOSE IN OUR COMMUNITY Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep, I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glint on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn’s rain. When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. A wonderful person, friend and aide, one who was better God never made; a wonderful worker, so loyal and true, one in a million – that person was you. Your memory is as dear today, as in the hour you passed away.Do not standat my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. May the winds of love blow softly and whisper so you’ll hear; we will always love and miss you and wish that you were here. The rolling stream of life rolls on. But still the vacant chair recalls the love, the voice, the smile of the one who once sat there. 1-800-263-6480 classifieds@metroland.comCLASSIFIEDSOBITUARIES | ANNOUNCEMENTS | JOBS | MARKETPLACE IN MEMORIAM 17 | Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , A p r i l 2 8 , 2 0 2 2 dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m Celebrate your life’s milestones with an announcement! 50% discount on your Anniversary, Birth, Birthday, Engagement, Graduation and Marriage announcements Please enter the code ANN2022 when placing your ad online at yourclassifieds.ca *Offer valid until June 30, 2022 *Some restrictions apply To place your announcement contact us at: 1-800-263-6480 or classifieds@metroland.com This Mother’s Day Say thank you to Mom wherever she is!
