Pick-up: April 14 th &16th Linda Puder lived herbest years in an old farm-house sitting on 12 acres ofland on Whitevale Road. "I'm glad we have ourmemories, because no onecan take that away fromus," she said. But the house can betaken away, and it hasbeen; it's on provincial land designated for the Seatoncommunity. After 48 years, Lindahas closed the door to the farmhouse one final time."Our house is slated tobe demolished within the next couple of weeks," saidLinda's daughter, DeannePuder. Deanne's daughter, Ka- mille Puder-Goldenthal, isdevastated by the loss."It doesn't just feel like a house," she said. "It feelslike the death of a familymember."The family spoke to the Pickering News Advertiserbefore Linda moved out atthe end of February. "None of it does feel realto me, like I'm watching amovie and somebody elseis doing it," she said. The land was expropri-ated by the provincial gov-ernment for Seaton in theearly 1970s. In 1974, the Pud- er family signed a lease andmoved in.The family lived in an apartment before signingthe lease, but when Puder'shusband, Ingo, bought apony from a man he met at a bar for $35 for his daugh-ter, he had to find some-thing appropriate. "It all started with need-ing a place to put the pony,"Linda recalled. One thing led to another and the family eventuallycollected a variety of ani-mals, including pigs, hors- es, goats, and ducks.Michelle Puder recallsswimming in the pond inthe summer and skating on it in the winter. "We took full advantageof our home," she said. "We loved it and took care of it."They tapped the mapletrees, picked fiddle headsin the forest on Mother's Day, and made pies withthe apples and pears theypicked."It was always in the back of my mind," Lindasaid of living on leasedland. "I just thought that, you know, that day willprobably come, and so I'mgoing to enjoy this homeevery day and enjoy it to my utmost ability and tryto make it a nice home formy family." But knowing didn'tmake the reality of receiv-ing an eviction notice hurt any less. "It's devastating for us,it's heartbreaking,"Deanne said. "It's affecting generations."Although it's about 150years old, the house has noheritage protection. The hamlet of Whitevalehas a number of historichomes. Twelve along Whi- tevale Road are consideredheritage lots in the Seatonplan. According to thePickering Heritage Adviso- ry Committee, 1585 White-vale Rd. — known as theEdward Willson House —is a 1.5-storey, wood-frame farmhouse with a 1.5-sto-rey tail extending to therear (built between 1866 and 1877). The addition of anew porch, window open-ings, dormers and rear tailsignificantly altered its original Ontario cottagedesign. The house has been used for filming severaltimes, most notably for themovie 'It' and the television show 'Hannibal'. Busloads of "Hannibal's Fannibals"from all over the worldhave come to see the house, and some fans even visited one last time in the days be-fore Linda moved out. Jeff Giffen, Ministry ofInfrastructure Ontariospokesperson, said theproperty is required to be transferred to the City ofPickering as part of thebroader Seaton develop- ment. "The property is beingconverted to parklands, which are required as part of the new community," hesaid. "Parklands and othercommunity uses must be completed before residentscan move into new, adjoin-ing subdivisions. " The Puders offered to pay to have the housemoved, but the request wasdenied. "Why not save the house?" Michelle asked. "Itwould be on our dime." Linda has been relocat-ed to a nearby bungalow."I think people need to know that even thoughchange is imminent — weall realize that nothinglasts forever — that sacri- fices have been made in or-der for people to have theirhouses," Michelle said.Giffen said Infrastruc-ture Ontario and its serviceproviders have been work-ing with the city and other partners to explore oppor-tunities to make the transi-tion for renters easier. Deanne said the Puders felt voiceless as renters. "Not owning the proper-ty doesn't make us love it any less," she said. "Wehave probably lived herelonger than most people onthis road — owners and renters. It's a part of ourfamily. It always will be."Before leaving, the fami- ly planned to go room toroom, and share memoriesbefore closing the door forgood. No one plans to drive byit again."I don't think I could stomach it," Deanne said. Construction on the Region of Dur-ham's Uxbridge-Pickering (UP) FibreBackbone Project began in Octoberand is expected to be completed in two to three months. The finished line willrun 38 kilometres, heading north onBrock Road from Taunton throughBrougham, Claremont and Coppins Corners to Highway 47, and then jut-ting south into Goodwood before con-tinuing north on Highway 47 into Ux- bridge."It's been a priority for the regionsince 2019 when the Broadband Strate-gy was developed that we have to do more for underserved communities ingeneral," Riaz Razvi, broadband spe- cialist with the Region of Durham, saidof the project, which is partially fundedby the Investment in Canada Infra-structure Program. "When this opportunity for fundingbecame available that's when we beganto seriously look at building it out our- selves."While the region will retain owner-ship of the trunk line, individual inter-net service providers (ISPs) will be re- sponsible for building the last-mile in-frastructure to connect homes to theservice, providing increased access forresidents and ongoing revenue for the region."The ISPs will be utilizing this tomake connections to the homes and businesses and obviously they will bemaking revenue from that so they willhave to lease access to the line andthere will be revenue potential there," Razvi explained, noting preliminarytalks with ISPs are currently under-way. Because the ISPs are ultimatelyresponsible for connecting individu-al customers, Razvi said they cur-rently have no estimate on how many homes and business might be able toaccess broadband as a result of thenew line. "We know how many homes are onthe path but as far as planning the net-work goes that would be up to the ISPs,"he said. While the region has previously in-stalled fibre lines in more urban areasas part of road work projects, the UPline is the first time the region has con- structed a fibre line alone, although itlikely will not be the last."This is the first new build solely for a fibre line," Razvi explained. "We dohave plans looking forward over thenext 10 years that could see more con-nections built in Durham." For more information on the pro-ject, visit www.durham.ca. The project was also put on hold in thespring of 2020 due to setbacks resultingfrom COVID-19, which included the lack ofrevenue from Pickering Casino, which had a significantly delayed opening due to re-strictions surrounding the pandemic. Thecity had been expecting $10 million to put toward the project early on.Guinto said the city would be reviewingthe City Centre project in light of the latestinformation. Based on this review and the updated financial projections, the councilwill decide on its future."In light of the project deferral, we must stress that the city continues to supportthe vision of a landmark City Centre pro-ject but has chosen to pause any furtherwork until this matter can be deliberated using the most up-to-date information," hesaid. In 2018, the city and Cushman and Wakefield (property managers of Picker-ing Town Centre) announced a partner-ship for the redevelopment of lands on theeast side of the mall property and city lands on the south side of EsplanadeSouth. Plans included new state-of-the-artbuildings and facilities, including a per- forming arts centre, a combined youth andseniors centre, a new Pickering Central Li-brary, and residential property, all to be connected by pedestrian-friendly walk-ways.Just last month, councillors and thepublic got a sneak peek of the vision for the project, as staff presented a draft plan ofsubdivision and a zoning bylaw amend-ment application submitted by OPB Realty for the easterly portion of the PickeringTown Centre lands.Last October, Pickering council met at aclosed-door meeting and agreed to sell the city's Elexicon Energy investment to pay the anticipated $207.7 million needed tofund the project."It should also be noted that althoughthe City Centre project is deferred, the city is continuing with the divestiture of itsshares in Elexicon," Guinto said. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY "What's up?" I asked, surprised to find the sun-room table swept clear of everything but Dennis's new 16-power binoculars. "I've been watchingbirds eat," he answered. "You should write about it." I gazed at him quizzical- ly. Watching birds eat is al- ready a big part of my life. "No, really. Take a look." He gestured toward thewindow and the patch of ground under the lilacs where we regularly spread mixed seed. "They're all different." So I got my own new bin- oculars and focused in onthe beak of a tree sparrow as it picked up a tiny millet seed, quickly cracked and shelled it with its beak, then reached for another. As soon as it snatched a seed, it raised its headagain, alert to any danger while chomping away, the bottom bill moving rapidly. Having eyes on the sides ofits head, instead of facing forward as we predators do, gave it a great field ofview, I noted. Same with the juncos feeding nearby -- similar size, similar bills, similartable manners. Our mourning doves just walked around peck-peck- pecking up seeds nonstop. I next studied a cardinal scooping up sunflower seeds in its thick conicalbill. It seemed to be manip- ulating those much larger objects with its tongue, dis- carding chunks of the shell as it turned the kernel this way and that before swal- lowing. Chickadees targetedsunflower seeds, too, but instead of remaining on the ground, they'd grab one and fly up into the lilacs, just as they do from a feed- er. Holding it on a branch with their toes, they ham-mered with their bill to re- move the shell and maybe break the seed into smaller bits.Dennis was right — all their eating methods were unique. White-throatedsparrows were scratching for seeds with both feet. Goldfinches and nuthatch- es were prying themthrough the wire mesh of our hanging feeders, using their slim bills like chop- sticks. And yet, doing the job! Lacking teeth, birds don't chew their food but grind itin their gizzard, swallow- ing grit from roadsides to help the process. Somehow, they must grasp food items without hands, discard in- edible bits, then manoeu- vre them into their mouthand down their throat. It is really tricky that their bills don't move inde- pendently but are fused onthe ends of their two major head bones. Which, fortu- nately, are hinged so thatthe lower mandible can flex, like an alligator's jaw. The tough keratin of a bird's beak wears downconstantly as it feeds, but keeps growing throughout its life, thank heavens as our keratin fingernails do. The science in thisone is impeccable, and the need is urgent. To not comply is not toexercise free will: it is to en- danger one's neighbours inthe name of false beliefsand denial of the science. The purpose of govern- ment is to keep the citizen-ry safe. But, in fact, there is nomandate except that cer-tain activities are not al-lowed the unvaccinated. On the terms of the PPC, free will is to allow unbri-dled license and usurp thesocial interest to that of a selfish few. Our headwa- ters and clean water andeverything else are justlanding north of where we all live. You can't just keeppushing further and fur-ther into that before we runout of room." Carpentier wasn't con-cerned when the matterwent back to staff, since itwill allow them to make amore informed decision.Brian Bridgeman, theregion's commissioner of planning and economic de-velopment, explained theregion is currently in theprocess of completing En- vision Durham, in which ithas to plan how to meet provincial targets of 1.3million people and 460,000 jobs by 2051."That's a near doublingin 30 years," he said.To accommodate this growth, "we'll be looking to'whitebelt' lands because we can't expand into theGreenbelt." Whitebelt lands are inbetween the Greenbelt andurban boundaries. When staff receives di- rection from council onhow to address the quan- tum of new people for 2051,staff will take EANAP's re- quest into account and re-port on it at that time."That will probably beearly 2023," Bridgeman said.Council will decide whether to ask the prov-ince to include the lands inthe Greenbelt.Residents fear that de- velopers and politicianslooking to develop the landwill push for a minister's zoning order (MZO) --which allows the Ministerof Municipal Affairs tozone any property in Onta- rio for development -- be-fore the headwaters get achance to be included in the Greenbelt. But Bridgeman pointedout that Durham counciltook a position against an MZO for this land in 2020.Bridgeman said there'sa potential for floodingeven in its undeveloped state, and putting the head-waters into the Greenbeltis not a guarantee that there wouldn't be futureflooding. He referred to the Car-ruthers Creek Watershed Plan conducted by the To-ronto and Region Conser- vation Authority. "(It) says that no devel-opment will proceed untilall impacts and flood risks are mitigated," he said, adding it also does not saythe area is not fit for devel-opment. Brenner encourages res-idents to visit stopsprawl-durham.com to urge local politicians to prioritize zeroboundary expansion."As much as I'm hopefulbut also pessimistic, I do hope that if we can get ev-erybody to raise their voic-es we may have a chance here," she said. Born in England, she was married to the late Jim Hudson and they were together for 55 amazing years. They immigrated in 1957 with just two suitcases to start a life in Canada and raised six children. They lived in Cowansville, Cornwall, Scar- borough, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and South Africa where they were missionaries. She was a caring mother to Carolyn and Phil Kondorosi, John and Tracy Hudson, Mark and Colleen Hudson, Ian Hudson and Sheila Corriveau, Katherine Sam and Mike Desjardins and Anna (Sam) Hudson. Kate was a proud grandma to: Adam, Mallorie, Jake, Marc, Shayne, Jenna, Mathew, Ben and Alexandra, and a recent first-time great grandmother to June Rose. She will be forever loved by her siblings and their spouses: the late John and Rina Harwood, late Anne and late Jack Hygate, Tony and Barbara Harwood, Sally and Geoff Baker, Angela Harwood and Ronnie Harwood. Auntie Kate was also loved by her many nieces and nephews across the globe. Kate treasured her faith, family and friends. She worked for the Durham Catholic District School Board and was also a Trustee. An active volunteer with the church, RCIA and St. Vincent De Paul Society, she had been living at Amica Whitby and cherished leading 'Rosary with Kate' for the residents in the retirement home library. Friends were received at the W.C. Town Funeral Chapel in Whitby at 110 Dundas Street East on Sunday, March 20, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A funeral was celebrated at the Holy Family Catholic Church at 91 Ribblesdale Drive on Monday, March 21, at 11 a.m. Light refreshments were served at the church hall following the burial at the Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Vincent's Kitchen or Adventure Place where she worked for many years. Online condolences at www.wctownfuneralchapel.com.
