Katherine Ross, Waste Management Technician for the Region of Durham talks everything Waste. Send your waste related questions or comments to waste@durham.ca If you require this information in an accessible format, please call 1-800-667-5671 •durham.ca/waste Waste App informs residents about waste collection service updates With recent waste collection challenges in some Durham neighbourhoods, the Region of Durham encourages all residents to stay informed about collection updates using the Durham Region Waste App. While interruptions to curbside waste collection services have historically been minimal – in the current state of prevailing winter weather, and worker shortages related to the highly transmissible COVID-19 Omicron variant – waste collection has been impacted, causing service delays for some residents. As a result, blue box recycling, green bin organics and garbage that is not completed on a regularly scheduled collection day are typically collected the following day. Collection services are extending into the evening hours, and sometimes, into Saturdays. Residents are asked to keep their materials set out at the curb until they are collected. Residents who download the Waste App to their electronic device can stay up to date as to whether disruptions will impact service in their community therefore minimizing frustration with the receipt of timely waste service alerts through the app. The app is available through Google Play or the App Store; or by searching their address using Durham’s online calendar tool at durham.ca/waste. Service alerts provide real time updates when delays are occurring. How you can help your collectors: • Place blue boxes, green bin, and garbage on cleared parts of your driveway. Do not put them on top of snowbanks or icy patches. • Ensure waste materials are not covered in snow. • During heavy snowfalls, waste materials must be set back from the curb approximately three metres. This helps prevent waste materials from being knocked over or buried during snow clearing operations. • Ensure all garbage is bagged and securely tied. • Ensure all green bin organic waste is bagged in 100 per cent compostable bags or paper liners. • Any loose garbage or loose organics will not be collected. • Please put used single-use face masks and gloves in the garbage. • Place COVID-19 rapid at-home test kit materials (including plastic tray) in the garbage bag. Place paper (e.g., instructions, box) in the papers Blue Box. • All waste materials must be at the curb before 7 a.m. on your collection day. • Blue boxes, green bin and garbage cannot weigh more than 20 kilograms (44 pounds) each. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY Spoiler alert -- this col- umn mentions spiders! I know some folks aren't fond of these eccentric lit-tle predators with eight eyes, eight legs and silken webs, even though they do great insect control on our behalf. But I understand ir- rational responses, having grown up with a dizzyingfear of heights, on prairie flatlands without a hill for 100 miles. Go figure. My spider story began the day after cataract sur- gery last fall, when I opened my eyes to find Ihad almost 20-20 distance vision. I've written about how miraculous it's been to see birds again, near andfar. I was thrilled just last week to spot an intriguing- looking one soaring, wingsspread in a dihedral, far ahead above the 401, and as we got closer, identifying it as a golden eagle. My hus-band was driving, you'll be glad to know, and I was rid- ing shotgun, happily scan-ning skies and roadsides for interesting birds. That same post-surgery day back in October I wassurprised — amazed — to suddenly discover cobwebs in the corners of the kitch- en ceiling — a fair number of them. And in the living room, along the ceiling edges. The slanting ceilingin my office was festooned with them, and the furnace room's exposed beams and rafters could have featured in a Halloween film. "Do you see all these cobwebs?"I demanded of Dennis, who looked at me with mild sur- prise. He's on a list for cat- aract surgery come spring. But my neat and tidy broth- er-in-law, one of the few vis- itors we've had over duringtwo years of COVID restric- tions, admitted, when I asked, that he'd noticed them. And was too polite totell me. I got out the duster and started removing them, butcarefully, curious to know what spiders had done all the decorating. Not orb- weaving ones, clearly, but"drapers" — like at the fami- ly farm in Haliburton, I soon realized. Long-legged "cellar spiders" that hang- upside-down at the corners of ceilings there, peaceful and unobtrusive, and wellknown for catching every other creepy-crawly around, according to re- search I did many years ago. Might some have been transported to our house, on firewood, perhaps?Bingo! My blitz netted five individuals: two tiny and delicate — babies, ob- viously; two graceful long-legged adults; and a mid- size one, which did what they supposedly often do toescape danger — twirled crazily, upside-down, on a strand of silk. Which gives them their other commonname, spinning spiders. When it calmed down I carefully moved it, like the others, to the hibiscus trees out in the sunroom, putting them to work catching aphids.Nature queries: mcar- ney1490@gmail.com or 905- 725-2116. Metroland columnistMargaret Carney finds so much to discover and mar-vel at exploring the greatoutdoors. COLUMNIST WEAVES A SPIDERY STORY MARGARET CARNEYSAW COBWEBS, LOTSOF THEM, AFTER EYESURGERY MARGARET CARNEY Column Is it any wonder that some people are afraid, even terrified, of spiders? With eight legs and eight eyes, they're downright creepy. Columnist Margaret Carney, after her eye surgery last year, was "amazed" to find many cobwebs in her home that she wasn't able to see before. She discovered that they were made by long-legged "cellar spiders." She speculates that perhaps they hitched a ride to Durham on firewood brought from Haliburton. Mike McEvoy photo EIGHT-EYED PREDATOR FORD GOVERNMENT NOT FIXING LONG-TERM CARE To the editor: Re: Premier Doug Fordreiterates drive for morelong-term-care beds during Ajax visit. Is this new facility runon a for-profit basis? Schle-gel Villages will construct a new 192-bed LTC home innorth Ajax and they alsorun many other Ontario fa- cilities, including the Vil-lage of Taunton Mills inWhitby. If these LTC bedsare for-profit they will be under the direction of in-vestors and shareholdersand will be free to provide fewer than the "target" offour hours of care daily. The Ford government willnot fulfil the commitment, when it comes to our vul-nerable elders, of increas-ing care from two hoursand 45 minutes to fourhours per day. And whatabout overall full-timestaffing? Here we go again with the focus of just buildinginstitutional beds with no long-term-plan to reformand commit to overhaulthe system. The MPP for Ajax previously stated hisgovernment has a plan tofix LTC. Apparently, theplan is not to reform but to continue to build institu-tions.After all, we know the result of the last two yearsand the number of deathsthis province reported infor-profit homes. Why is this government not intro-ducing reforms instead ofcontinuing the status quo?It is sad to acknowledge that more than 50 per centof LTC licences are beingawarded to the for-profit companies, as the OHC re-port notes. With Bill 37, this govern-ment has all but guaran- teed for-profit LTC in ourfuture, with no viable alter-natives. Why is this governmentnot pursuing other juris-dictions to determine legis-lation, governance, proto- cols, costs etc. to minimizeinstitutional beds andbring much-needed signifi- cant reform, the option tolive with dignity in theirown home as long as possi-ble with community sup- port?We must demandchange. After all, each oneof us will one day be an el- der Canadian. I pray that I will neverhave to be in LTC. That compared to the2.8 per cent for the not-for-profits and 1.4 per cent forthe municipal homes forthe aged. A stunning differ- ence and, of course, it'slargely explained by thefact that the not-for-profitsand the municipal homes for the aged have higherstaffing levels of about 25per cent higher," Hurley said.He said private hospi-tals or independent facili-ties would be competing for staff members, includ-ing doctors and nurses, with the publicly-funded hospitals, Hurley noted."There are only so manyworkers. So, how do youstaff up in the private sec- tor? You recruit them fromthe public sector. How doyou do that? You pay more," he said."We're here today on be-half of the Ontario HealthCoalition; if there's one les- son that should be drawnfrom the terrible sufferingof the residents who died ofheartbreak, malnutrition, dehydration and neglect inthese long-term-care facil-ities and the suffering of their families, if there's onething should be broughtfrom that, we cannot affordthe confusion that comes when profit and care getcombined," he said.Cathy Parkes' father died at Orchard Villa onApril 15, 2020 in the firstwave of COVID. She noted Orchard Vil- la, one of the homes wherethe military was called into help during the earlydays of the pandemic, has applied to the province fora30-year operating licenceand 87 more beds. "Yet, they have not beenheld to accountability inwhat happened in thathome," she said. Parkes said the govern-ment seems to be hopingenough time will pass and the public will forget."I'll never forget my fa-ther and I'll never forgetthe people he lived with. I still see their faces. Theyall had families. They allhad people who lovedthem. They didn't deserve to die that way."Charlene Van Dyk hasbeen a front-line worker in Durham for almost 23years."I have a front-row seatto the staffing shortages and high workloads thatthe provincial and federalunderfunding of health care services has caused. Ihave also experiencedwhat the underfunding in long-term care looks like and the impact of notenough staff," she said. She noted the health-care system is "under at- tack every day" and thepublic needs to fight for it."We need to demand that the public health-careoptions be expanded, notprivate ones," Van Dyksaid. Lance Livingstone, co-chair of the DurhamHealth Coalition, said hismother was turned awayfrom a for-profit home be-cause of the amount of careshe would have needed. "Get rid of the profithomes. The province an-nounced in February that school boards in Ontarioare required to offer a vir-tual learning option for one more school year.Across the province, "asmall minority" — about150,000 of two million stu- dents — are enrolled in vir-tual learning programs, ed-ucation minister Stephen Lecce said at a Feb. 17 newsconference."What I've heard fromtheir parents and from some educators who are in-volved in virtual learningis that that is a strength for that small minority of chil-dren, so we're going to con-tinue to offer it," he said. The Durham DistrictSchool Board will offerDDSB@Home as separate virtual elementary andsecondary schools for 2022-23. Families will have a window of time fromMarch 18 to 27 to choose vir-tual learning for next year. "Like previous selectionopportunities, this is a per-manent decision for the up-coming school year and we are not planning on provid-ing opportunities to transi-tion to/from DDSB@Home in order to ensure stabilityin classrooms as the trans-fer process can be disrup- tive for staff, students andon learning," the DDSBsaid in a statement. The DDSB currently hasabout 6,155 elementary stu-dents learning virtually,up from 5,717 in first semes- ter. It's a big drop from 2020-21, when the board had about 15,000 elementarystudents learning virtual-ly.Families with the Dur- ham Catholic DistrictSchool Board will be re-quired to choose a learning mode for 2022-23 by the endof March — that board is al-so saying families must commit to virtual or in-per-son for the entire schoolyear. DCDSB currently hasabout 990 elementary stu-dents and 420 high schoolstudents learning virtual- ly. For Clarington stu-dents, the Kawartha Pine Ridge District SchoolBoard has given familiesuntil March 29 to registerfor virtual learning and says elementary students"will be able to enter or exitfull-time virtual learning at three designated timesin the school year" -- Sep-tember, November and February — while highschool students can make aswitch at the start of eachsemester. At the PeterboroughVictoria Northumberlandand Clarington Catholic District School Board, reg-istration for virtual learn-ing closes March 21. The board says "enrol- ment in the virtual schoolwill be for the entire schoolyear with limited excep- tions. But for extraordi-nary circumstances, therewill not be an opportunityto transition from virtual school to in-person learn-ing or in-person learning tovirtual school during the 2022-2023 school year."– With files from TorStarNews Service SHORT WINDOW FOR FAMILIES TO DECIDE ON VIRTUAL LEARNING JILLIAN FOLLERT jfollert@durhamregion.com NEWS TEACHER UNIONSARE CRITICIZING THEDECISION TO OFFERVIRTUAL LEARNINGFOR ANOTHER YEAR New artwork in Ajax is dressing up town hall withboth symbolism and beau-ty. Robert Small's 'Decades to Come' epitomizes thesentiment of the United Na-tions' declaration of the In- ternational Decade for Peo-ple of African Descent, andattempts to connect peopleof African descent to their tragic past and the promiseof the future. The Ajax Anti-Black Racism Task Force (AABRTF) and Ajax coun-cil recently unveiled thepiece. The UN's declaration recognizes that people ofAfrican descent representa distinct group whose hu- man rights must be pro-moted and protected. De-spite the pain of the past, the declaration is meant to provide people around theworld the opportunity touncover the beauty of Afri- can history. AABRTF chair MariskaThomas explained thetheme for the decade in-cludes three main pillars: recognition, justice and de-velopment. These pillarsprovide the foundation for short and long-term initia-tives set out by theAAABRTF and are used asa road map towards achiev- ing equity for the AjaxBlack community. "The Task Force is proud to bring further awareness and learning op-portunities to the commu-nity, in order to promote re- spect, protection and fulfil-ment of all human rightsand fundamental freedomsby people of African De- scent, as recognized in theUniversal Declaration ofHuman Rights," she said. Just a thought of sweet remembrance just a memory sad and true, just the love and sweet devotion of one who thinks of you. A sweet little flower, nipped in the bud, no grief or sorrow knew; just came to earth to win our love and then to Heaven withdrew. No stain was on your little heart, sin had not entered there; and innocence slept sweetly on that pale white brow so fair.
