"I rely on the fact thatthis is necessary." Scanga and Cohen be-long to Climate JusticeDurham (CJT), a group ofvolunteers advocating for meaningful climate-basedchange in the communityas well as in all levels ofgovernment. It began as Fridays for Future Whitbyin 2019 before changing itsname. Before joining CJD, "Iwas feeling really downand depressed about howhopeless everything felt," Scanga said. She wanted to channelher anger and fear and put it into climate work."We want to bring a con-nection between individu-al action and collective sys- temic action," she said.An early highlight was aclothing swap that divert- ed hundreds of pounds ofclothing from landfill. "It's been a wild coupleof years, and I feel we've made progress and I'm re-ally proud of that." Scangasaid. The group has pushedfor national and interna-tional change, and has putan emphasis on the need for local improvements, specifically in the area ofgreen development stan-dards. In 2020, the group urgedDurham Region council todeclare a climate emergen- cy, which passed. "There is real room forpeople to take action andmake a real difference," Cohen said. With an active socialmedia presence, the group translates municipal docu-ments and press releasesinto layman's terms, mak- ing them as accessible andreadable as possible, so people who are impactedby government decisionsget an opportunity to com-ment."We know what our bestpractices are," Cohen said."It's just about making sure our government actuallydoes those things."CJT is actively involvedwith the Town of Whitby, a leader in sustainable de-velopment, and Jade Scho-field, Whitby's manager of sustainability and climatechange, is grateful for theirinput."What we build today will be there for tomorrowand it will be up to ouryouth to manage that," said Schofield. "It's our respon-sibility to do the right thingnow for the future genera- tion." Schofield recalls theearly days when Friday forFuture Whitby protestedfor climate justice every Friday."From there they reallyhave gotten themselves very organized, and start-ed to approach town staffand elected officials onwhat they want to see as it relates to climate change,"she said.Schofield calls thegroup "very present andvocal" and has workedwith them on developing anumber of initiatives in- cluding the Whitby GreenStandard and the Zero Car-bon Whitby Plan. The group has also worked with Clarington, and is working with Ajaxand Pickering on green de- velopment standards aswell."It's really been quite in-spiring to see youth telling us what they need to see inthe future," Schofield said.CJD seeks guidance from advisers, people withdecades of environmentalexperience themselves. Pickering resident Gail Lawlor of SoRo GoodNeighbours is a senior ad-viser to the group."These young people have passion and desire tolive in a world that respectsthe limited resources of our planet and enacts mea-sures that help mitigateand adapt to climate cha-os," she said in an email. But since there is agrowing number of issuesthat must be addressed inDurham, more membersare needed.Julia Stimpson, a Grade12 student at All Saints Catholic Secondary Schoolin Whitby, was 16 when sheread a book called "Youthto Power" and felt empow- ered to join a local group."It's been a fantasticlearning opportunity for me to grow and learn aboutmunicipal politics," shesaid of her involvement.Stimpson understands that taking on a big issuesuch as climate change canfeel overwhelming. "I'm such a small personand this is a big issue," shesaid. And she agrees that some days more than oth-ers it's harder to be hope-ful. "I do think that with the work that we are doing as agroup, it definitely doesgive me hope," she said. To Scanga, there's pow-er in numbers."We have a lot of powerwhen we work together," she said. "The more peoplewho join the climate move-ment and get involved, themore collective power wehave."No expertise is neededto join. "Come as you are, andwe'll find out a way thatyou can help," Cohen said.Find Climate Justice Durham on Instagram,Twitter or Facebook oremail climatejusticedur- ham@gmail.com. LIMITED-TIMEOFFER! 52%OFF SPRING BONUSGIFT Recreation improvements and waterfront winter maintenancewere on council's agenda at thelatest meeting. Here's what you may havemissed at the Feb. 28 Pickeringcouncil meeting: SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE •Council unanimously ap-proved a motion calling for the immediate cessation of all Russiamilitary forces in Ukraine.Ward 3 regional Coun. David Pickles, who introduced the mo-tion, called the situation a traves-ty.He said after the meting, "Can- ada, including here in Pickering, has had our veterans fight to ob-tain and preserve peace; we can- not lose the peace and democracythat they fought for."The City of Pickering is also flying the Ukrainian flag at cityhall, and the building will be litup blue and yellow at night. RECREATION MATTERS •Council approved a total net project cost of $219,637 for a ten-nis court lighting revitalization. This includes the hiring of R.A.Graham Construction Ltd. to complete the work. The existinglighting systems of the indoortennis courts at Chestnut Hill De- velopment Recreation Complexhave experienced performancedegradation resulting in overalllighting level reduction through- out the space, which has affecteduse of the space. •Council approved a total gross project cost of $544,546 for aPickering Civic Complex boilerreplacement. This includes hir-ing S.I.G. Mechanical Services Limited to do the work. The exist-ing backup boiler systems serv-ing the civic complex is original to the building, which opened in1990. It provides heat throughout the building, and is essential tomaintaining indoor tempera-tures throughout the colder half of the year. These boilers, pumpsand other equipment havereached end of life and requirereplacement. •Council approved a motionthat staff look into a proposal by the Amberlea Tennis Club to dis-cuss its proposal for the con- struction of a third court to beshared with pickleball users. This will include consulting nearby residents and identifyingfunding sources such as develop-ment charges, grants and otherrevenue streams that could en- able consideration for construc-tion as part of the 2023 capital budget. This motion is a result offinding more court space for thepickleball community. WATERFRONT WINTER MAINTE-NANCE •Staff gave an update on its pi-lot program conducting short- term winter maintenance of thesection of the Waterfront Trailfrom Millennium Square to the spit (the east shore of French-man's Bay) and the paved pathand gravel roadway to the spit(the west shore). Staff reported back they are confident wintercontrol can be performed suc-cessfully, if the road base can be brought up to a suitable standardand maintained in advance ofnext winter. CORRESPONDENCE •Council endorsed a motionby the Durham District School Board requesting provincialfunding to municipalities to wid-en dead-end roads in Durham Re- gion for the safe operation ofschool buses. 7 PICKERING COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS FROM FEBRUARY Pickering is working to make access to Pickering's waterfront more accessible in the winter months. She will be deeply missed by her boys who she loved with all her heart, Derek (Lisa) and Brian (Sara). Helen cherished her grandchildren Laurie, Brayden, Owen and Dylan. Helen is predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Donald. She will be fondly missed by her brothers-in-law Ken and Bill and sisters-in-law Betty (Ross), Marlene and Laverne, along with many nieces and nephews.
