Going out the door. Atthe end of a phone call.Closing a text exchange. It is something that cannever be overstated or saidoften enough. As we getready to enter another pan- demic year, we know toowell that time runs fast. And one of the most impor-tant things we can do dur- ing the time we have is tolet the people we careabout, know it. So this one's for you. It's been 18 months sincePaul Rivett and I had theprivilege of becoming own- ers of Torstar, includingThe News Advertiser - atime that, thanks to many, has been an honour, an ed-ucation and a tremendous-ly rewarding experience. I have had the chance to see the impact of the sto-ries we tell in our commu-nities and the work thatgoes into bringing them to you. And I've been grantedinsight into the curiosity, interest and caring that drives our readers to turnto The News Advertiserand durhamregion.com, which, in turn, inspires usto work even harder. From our very first day,we have received letters and emails from readers.Whether it be kudos, in-formed critiques, or calls to keep up our small businesssupport, it is evident every-one cares deeply and plac-es great value on trusted - local - journalism. What you give as a read-er, and by investing withthe businesses that sup-port us, is essential in al-lowing us to help bring ourcommunity together through the stories that re-flect and reveal what mat-ters most to people in Dur-ham. And for that, I am tru- ly grateful.I want to thank our jour- nalists - award-winning writers, reporters and re-searchers - for getting inthe trenches and striving to do the right thing, dig-ging for the details thatkeep us informed, and un-earthing the gems that in- spire and entertain us. To our advertisers, weknow first-hand how chal- lenging things have beenand we commit to do every-thing in our power to help you get your business backon its feet. And to the localbusinesses and flyer adver-tisers who have fared well enough to support usthrough these difficult times, thank you. As we start 2022, it's im-possible not to look back on2021. There's no gentle way toput it; it was rough. At times it felt over-whelming with stories of violence, political divisionor natural disaster. Butthere were also good, up- lifting stories. I believethat's where our weeklypapers shine - reportingimportant local news and also highlighting what'sgreat about our communi-ties; featuring the amazingpeople, places and things that surround us every day. One of our main goalsfor 2022 will be to help our communities get back ontheir feet. A strong localeconomy has never beenmore important. As such we will ask business andcommunity leaders to lend their voice on how we get things going. We will ask you to sup-port local businesses. We will ask you to support cul-ture and arts by buyingtickets to local events andfundraisers. And we will call on you to aid those inour community who needour collective help. With your help we canbe champions for every-thing that makes Durhamgreat, and we can chal- lenge ourselves and othersto be better, where we needto be. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM Winter arriving in fits and starts made for someinteresting results and re- cords on Christmas Bird Counts over the holidays. And left unforgettable im-ages dancing in my head. Close-ups of hooded mer- gansers, for example, classy little diving ducks already in courtship mode, the black-backed, orange- sided males showing offtheir brilliant white "ham- merhead" crests wherever grey-brown females gath- ered. And gather they did on the wide-open waters of Fairy Lake in Huntsville, where the weather itself broke records — warm sunshine and not a single breeze all day to ripple theglassy surface. Best bird- ing conditions of any Cana- dian Christmas Count I'veever been on! Plus Dennis and I found seven species of waterfowl in our little sec- tion of the usually frozenover count circle — seven!! Major lakes were still open three days later for the Haliburton count, where common mergan- sers stole the show. Peering out past cottages through aveil of snowflakes, in much chillier conditions, I watched nine males prac- tise synchronized swim- ming, black heads and white bodies all pointing one way, then the oppositeas they came paddling back in formation minutes later. That same sheltered cove produced six golden- eyes, three hoodies and a herring gull, a good sam- pling of water birds beingnudged southward by Old Man Winter. My waterfowl highlight on a count down in Dur-ham the following day was a thousand greater scaup rafting together off a pointin south Whitby, likely re- cently arrived from a freez- ing-up Hudson Bay. On every count, gazingup into the skies was just as productive as looking out at lakes, for winter finches were on the move. I had stellar views of white- winged crossbills settling on the pointy tips of bal-sam firs and spruces in swampy areas as I "pished" them in with lispy alarm notes — rose-pink males and honey-mustard-col- oured females and young, the juveniles heavilystreaked. Common red- polls were more abundant but less co-operative, bounding about over the treetops and chattering endlessly as they came and went together.Looking up, I found ea- gles as well — an adult and juvenile circling majesti- cally, dots high in the skyabove the forested Big East River north of Huntsville. And two other adults, theirwhite heads and tails visi- ble through swirling snow, perched in trees before I walked over a ridge andflushed them, along with a mob of starlings, a dozen ring-billed and twice that many herring gulls, some 60 ravens and a handful of crows, at the Minden dump — a bonanza of birds.Nature queries: mcar- ney1490@gmail.com or 905- 725-2116. Metroland columnistMargaret Carney finds so much to discover and mar-vel at exploring the greatoutdoors. WEATHER AFFECTED CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNTS MARGARET CARNEYWAS ON THE MOVETALLYING BIRDS MARGARET CARNEY Column Greater scaups often congregate in large groups, sometimes numbering in the thousands, called rafts. These diving ducks have a broad distribution and in North America winter along the warmer sea coasts, the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes. When the warm weather comes scaups head for areas including Newfoundland and Labrador, Hudson Bay and the northern parts of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Mike McEvoy photo DIVING DUCKS REMOVE FEES FROM DURHAM HIGHWAYS To the editor: Premier Ford states thatthe proposed four-laneBradford bypass will not be a tolled highway and willbe constructed/owned byOntario.Notice how new four- lane highways in Trans-portation Minister Mulro-ney's home riding of York- Simcoe will not be tolled. The province also ownshighways 412 and 418 andbased upon this Bradford decision our local tollsshould be removed as wellon these two highways in Durham Region.JIM MCEWENCLARINGTON READER QUESTIONS NEW LONG-TERM CARE FACILITIES To the editor: I lived through the hor-ror of almost 80 people dy-ing at Orchard Villa, thenthe travesty of this govern- ment considering givingthem even more beds and a 30-year license. The mili-tary having to come in wasnot enough for our local MPP, Peter Bethlenfalvy, and his government to con-sider avoiding makingthings worse. Now Rod Phillips, MPPfor Ajax and Minister forLong Term Care, seems to think building even moreinstitutions on the taxpay-er's dime will somehow fixlong-term care. It won't. It will just drive more old anddisabled people into big fa-cilities where they will beforgotten - out of sight out of mind. That is not how weshould be treating our old- er citizens, who deserveour respect, not to be treat-ed like throw-away people. Older people and people with disabilities do notwant to end their lives ininstitutions, why can't the Ontario government getthat? Why can't it properlyfund home care instead of throwing more money atbig long-term care corpora- tions with less than stellartrack records? Why can'tthey pay what they pay them to families to care fortheir loved ones? Why can'tseniors live in group homeslike younger people with disabilities if they needhelp? Why do they have togo into big institutions to get care?Maybe the local politi-cians are happy about thisannouncement but those who will be forced to live inthose institutions becausethey have no choice are not,and we will vote with our feet come election time.RON ADDISONPICKERING SIGN UP FOR OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER AT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY 7 | Pic k e r i n g N e w s A d v e r t i s e r | P | T h u r s d a y , J a n u a r y 6 , 2 0 2 2 dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m @cityofpickering Weekly Community Page January 6 Customer Care Centre 905.683.7575 (24 hour line) customercare@pickering.capickering.ca COVID-19CityResponse GetthelatestinformationonCityservices, closures, businesssupports, community resources,andmoreatpickering.ca/covid19. Here's a look back at theremarkable cases. ADAM STRONG The trial for Strong, possibly the most notori- ous defendant to appear atthe Oshawa courthousesince its opening 11 yearsago, began in September 2020. Lawyers for theCrown and defence com-pleted final submissions two days before Christ-mas.Strong pleaded notguilty to the first-degree murders of Rori Hache, who was 18 when she wentmissing in the late summer of 2017, and 19-year-oldKandis Fitzpatrick, lastseen in 2008. The Crown al-leged Strong killed the young women during sexu-al encounters in his base-ment apartment on McMil-lan Drive in Oshawa, then dismembered them in aneffort to cover up thecrimes. In mid-March of thisyear, Superior Court Jus-tice Joseph Di Luca foundStrong guilty of first-de- gree murder in Hache'sdeath, and manslaughterin Fitzpatrick's. Di Luca sentenced Strong to life inprison in late May, deliv-ering a scathing condem-nation of the defendant. "You will likely spendthe rest of your life in pris-on," Di Luca said. "You will neither be famous nor infa-mous. You will simply begone." CORY FENN A trial began in Septem-ber for Cory Fenn, accused of the second-degree mur-ders of his girlfriend Kras-simira Pejcinovski, 39, her15-year-old son Roy and 13- year-old daughter Venelliaon March 14, 2018. All threevictims were found in their home at 36 Hilling Dr. in Ajax.Fenn admitted to thekillings in a police inter-view on March 15, 2018, the day after he was arrested, but told police he was in a"cocaine psychosis." Re- presenting himself, he of-fered no defence in court.Defence lawyer May Cre- mer — fired by Fenn on the eve of his trial — acted asamicus curiae, or friend ofthe court, to ensure Fennhad a fair trial. As the trial wound downin late October, Fenn deliv-ered an address to the court, declaring his soulwas "inanimate" at thetime of the killings and therefore he is not respon-sible."I'm innocent, a freeman," he said. Judge Howard Leibov-ich is expected to deliver averdict on Jan. 21, 2022. DENIM HENDERSON A trial began Nov. 8 for Denim Henderson, whopleaded not guilty to sec-ond-degree murder, aggra-vated assault and failing to provide the necessities oflife in connection with the2016 death of his girl- friend's child, nine-month-old Kaleb McKay.An autopsy showed Ka-leb had sustained numer- ous bruises, abrasions andfractures, many of them in-flicted at or near the time ofhis death. Henderson de-nied he'd ever hurt Kaleband wept as he describedfinding the infant's lifeless body.Ajury found Hendersonguilty of manslaughterDec. 10. The verdict indi- cates that the jury accept-ed the Crown's allegationthat Henderson assaulted Kaleb and caused thechild's death, but not thathe formed intent to commitmurder. A sentencing hearing isscheduled for March 1,2022. 2021: A YEAR OF HIGH-PROFILE MURDER TRIALS IN THE COURTS Adam Strong, left, in an interview room with Durham police Detective Hermano Dorego following his arrest in December of 2017. The Regions will submit an Environmental Screening Report to the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks on December 20, 2021 for review and approval. The Environmental Screening Report has been prepared to increase the annual processing capacity at the DYEC from 140,000 tonnes per year to 160,000 tonnes per year. This additional capacity is needed to accommodate population growth within the two Regions, allow the DYEC to operate more efficiently and produce more energy. This increase in capacity will not require any modifications to existing infrastructure. The Screening process involved identifying and applying criteria for potential environmental effects, public/ external agency and Indigenous consultation and the development of measures to mitigate any identified environmental effects. The proposed capacity increase is not expected to have any significant net effects on the environment. The results of the study were documented in an Environmental Screening Report, available for a 60-calendar day review period from December 20, 2021 to February 18, 2022. The report is available for public review at durhamyorkwaste.ca If you are unable to access the digital copy of the report posted on this website or require an alternative format, please contact 1-800-667-5671. If you have concerns or comments regarding this project, please contact The Regional Municipality of Durham (contact details below) to discuss. If concerns regarding this project cannot be resolved in discussion with The Regional Municipality of Durham or The Regional Municipality of York, a person or party may request that the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks make an order for the project to comply with Part II of the EnvironmentalAssessmentAct (referred to as a “elevation request”), which would elevate the project to an Individual EnvironmentalAssessment. Requests for an “elevation request” must be submitted in writing to the Director, EnvironmentalAssessment Branch and to the “Proponent”at the address listed below no later than 60-calendar days from the date of this Notice (December 20, 2021). Elevation request must be made in accordance with the provisions set out in Section B.3. of the “Guide to environmental assessment requirements for waste management projects”(ontario.ca/page/guide-environmental-assessment-requirements-waste-management- projects). Please submit the elevation request to each of the following two contacts. If submitting a hard copy request, please advise by phone or email as well due to COVID-19 circumstances. If no elevation requests are received by 4:30 p.m. on February 18, 2022, The Regional Municipality of Durham and The Regional Municipality of York intend to proceed with the process as scheduled. Jason Liebregts/Metroland NEWS A new 7,000-square-foot event space isnow open in Pickering and it's the firstbanquet venue of its kind in the city. The Pickering Event Centre is located at 1755 Pickering Parkway near BrockRoad and Highway 401. The centre is owned by Rockwood Hos- pitality, which specializes in event, ban-quet and conference facilities."We're trying to make it a bit differentfrom what you would expect from a banquet hall," says Abhishek Pandya, chief operat-ing officer for Rockwood Hospitality. "It's ur-ban industrial — no carpeting, no chande- liers. It's more like an art gallery style."The venue has seating for 200 peopleand offers in-house and catered food op- tions as well as in-house audio/visualpackages. Pandya says menus have been designedto appeal to a diverse range of guests, in-cluding a South Asian package, Caribbeanpackage and an Islamic wedding reception package with a halal menu. The new space has been in the workssince before the pandemic. Johney Brar, CEO of Rockwood Hospi-tality, says Pickering has a lack of venuesof this type, which means people oftenhave to look at places like Scarborough or Mississauga to host weddings and events."Pickering is growing, it's an up andcoming city ... it's huge for us to be the firstvenue like this," he says. We also share our loss with Patricia's lifelong friend Janice, whose visits always gave Tish such joy. Patricia - Pat to her friends and Tish to her family - grew up in Ajax, and continued to live there until 2014. For the past few years she has lived at Trinity Village Care Centre in Kitchener, where she received excellent care in a loving community. Until the pandemic curtailed activities, she continued her lifelong love of choral singing as a member of a local seniors' choir. Tish's life will be celebrated by the family when we can gather together in the spring. Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Village Care Centre or the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. DUNN, James (Jim) July 26, 1939 - December 30, 2021 ------------------ Jim Dunn, 82, passed away peacefully on December 30th, 2021 at the Ajax-Pickering Hospital with his wife and daughters by his side. Jim was born on July 26th, 1939 in Toronto, the only son of Gladys and Albert Dunn. Jim met the love of his life, Ilean Holman, at East York Collegiate. They married on October 25th, 1961 and Jim welcomed Ilean's parents, Bill and Grace Holman and siblings, Linda and Bill to his family. He turned his love of cars into a career and spent many years as a Shell station operator and auto mechanic in downtown Toronto. He loved people and always managed to meet someone who knew him, no matter how far or wide he travelled. Jim was husband to Ilean for 60 years, Dad to Wendy and Kim, J.R. to son-in-laws Greg and Rick and GP (Grandpa) to Jazmin, Ahren, Kyle and Tyler. His family loved him dearly and are deeply saddened by his loss. After watching his challenges with Alzheimer's and Parkinson disease, his family take comfort knowing that he has found peace. Jim was a kind, caring and generous spirit who embraced life and loved to spend time with family and friends. Throughout his lifetime he enjoyed spinning great stories, sharing a joke (or two!), time at the cottage, classic cars and car shows, family get togethers, playing cards, dancing, good books, watching football and hockey, ice cream and birthday hot dogs and orange pop. In accordance with his wishes, Jim will be cremated and no service will be held. If you wish to make a donation in his memory, please do so to the charity of your choice. GUNTHARDT, Christina Charlotte February 21, 1960 - December 24, 2021 "Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody Control the Controllable Faith over fear Do what you can while you can" ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ These were Christina's mantra's she lived by every day and anyone who knew her heard these on a regular basis. These meant a lot to Christina and helped her through the last two years during her struggle with cancer, which ultimately took her life on the morning of December 24, 2021 at Lake Ridge Health Oshawa. Christina is predeceased by her mother and father Irmgard and Walter, mother and father in-law Helen and Harry, Uncles and Aunts Reiner and Jan, Joe and Trudy, Rita and Carl, Hans and Trudy and Ulrich. Christina will also be missed by her many cousins in Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Philippines and by the many people whose hearts she touched. Growing up in Ajax, Christina was the middle of 5 children and from an early age was active in sports and continued playing ringette into her 50's. Christina attended Ajax high school where she had a close friendship with a circle of girlfriends that continued throughout her life with annual weekend getaways to many locations in Ontario. She graduated from Trent University with a Bachelor of Science and completed Teachers College at Queens University. Christina taught French for several years then switched careers and worked for the Canadian Mental Health Association for 20 years. Christina became an accomplished photographer and anyone she met never escaped without an "FTR" (For the Record) photo being taken. Grant and Christina became the perfect team, Grant playing the music and Christina taking the photos. Christina was thrilled to have a photo published in Cottage Life Magazine and by having the honour to photograph her niece Krista's wedding in Jamaica. Family and friends were everything to Christina and sharing the love of the cottage became a regular event multiple times per year. The more people the merrier and the cottage was the place where so many amazing happy memories were created.
