For more than 30 years, staff and students at anAjax high school have beensupporting local familiesin need at Christmas — andit all started with a redwagon. The story goes that anow-retired teacher fromArchbishop Denis O'Con-nor Catholic High School was out Christmas shop-ping when he overheard ayoung boy telling his mom about a red wagon that hehoped Santa would bring him."Her answers ... led theteacher to believe that may-be Santa wasn't coming to their house at Christmas,"explains Nichole Jones, theschool's guidance counsel- lor. The teacher bought thewagon for the child andthat inspired the school's annual Red Wagon Cam-paign.Since 1989, the cam-paign has seen the schooldonate about $200,000worth of money, food andgifts cards to the St. Vin- cent de Paul chapter at St.Bernadette Parish in Ajax. Funds are raisedthrough dress-down days, schoolwide Bingo games, raffles, bake sales and oth-er events. Gift cards and pantry items are also col-lected. "The Red Wagon cam- paign is an absolute legendaround here," says Timo-thy Lee Loy, chaplain at De-nis O'Connor. The money raised al-lows St. Vincent de Paul togive gift cards to families in need, which can be used tobuy gifts for children and food for Christmas dinner. Kim Visser is the senioradministrative assistant atDenis O'Connor and hasbeen there for 20 years. Her favourite part of the cam-paign is that it helps fami-lies right in the school's own community. "Over the years, it has warmed my heart to watch staff and students come to-gether to raise funds forfamilies in need, everyonepulling together. There are so many smiles," Vissersays. " They say it takes avillage to raise a family. I say that Denis O'Connor isa family; a very big family." SCHOOL'S CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGN STARTED WITH A RED WAGON JILLIAN FOLLERT jfollert@durhamregion.com Since 1989, the annual Red Wagon Campaign has seen Ajax's Archbishop Denis O'Connor Catholic High School donate about $200,000 worth of money, food and gifts cards to the St. Vincent de Paul chapter at St. Bernadette Parish in Ajax. Durham Catholic District School photo COMMUNITY MORE THAN$200,000 IN MONEY,GIFT CARDS, FOODDONATED SINCE 1989 Christmas is about com-passion. The birth of Jesus andhis entire life in many re-spects represents the mo-ment when this broken world became his home. Itwas not an entrance char-acterized by privilege, comfort, public celebra-tion or self-glorification; itwas marked instead by lowliness, obscurity, hu-mility and fragility.Jesus' energies and af-fections were primarily aimed toward social out-casts, the downtroddenand "unclean," strangers and aliens, prostitutes andthe powerless. True greatness is shown through servingothers and sacrifice. To-day, we are faced with hu-man suffering, depravity, wars, poverty, homeless-ness and injustice. And40,000 people die each dayfrom avoidable poverty-re- lated causes, but these cru-elties completely escapeour mind. Christmas actually pro-vides us with a unique op-portunity to appeal to asharing-oriented world, to our goodwill and con-science to help the de-prived and dispossessed and heal the environment. In such times as these, what we are in fact cele- brating is our self-pro- claimed freedom to remaincomplacent, oblivious andimmature behind an age-old alibi that says, "life is short," "you only liveonce." As an experimentfor just one New Year's Eve, try not to do anythingthat evening and insteadstay at home alone, with-out watching television or communicating with any-one. And then see how lonelyyou feel at midnight, in the knowledge that everyoneoutside is revelling andhaving fun. At that mo- ment imagine you are suf-fering from acute hungerand have no prospect of ob-taining food, while the rest of the world is blithely con-tinuing with their newyear celebrations. Let us try to imagine: how wouldthat feel?Christmas should serve as an opportunity to recon- nect and to strengthen thefamily bonds, time to trea-sure and fortify the foreverfamilies with wholesome love and compassion dur-ing the brief holiday timethat is spent together. It may surprise many toknow that Muslims cher-ish and venerate Jesus theprophet, and also believe in the virgin birth. But I of-ten wonder, are we payingonly lip service to his lifeand legacy? If we can focus on hisenduring message andhelp remove the afflictions facing humanity thatwould be acting on the trueteachings of Jesus, the sonof Mary, the Messiah, and the prophet.Merry Christmas. After a public engage-ment process, and a con-sultant put together plansfor the waterfront revival, council endorsed theBeachfront Park MasterPlan at the Monday, Dec. 13 meeting. The project is expectedto cost around $7.7 millionplus HST. Improvements include:West Beach Area• An improved six-metre wide access drive • A gathering node locat-ed closer to the harbour en-trance that could be used for small events• Seating nodes moved tothe north side of the access drive, away from the waveuprush area• Improved transitionfrom Millennium Square to the access drive• Opportunity for asmall rental or retail kioskwest of Millennium Square • A small playground ar-ea and shade structure lo-cated on the west side of Millennium SquareEast Beach Area andMillennium Square• A 6.6-metre-wide ele- vated waterfront trail witha three-metre-wide two-way dedicated bike lane and a three-metre-wide pe-destrian promenade sepa-rated with a 0.6-metre-wide site furniture strip• Observation platformsoverlooking the HydroMarsh • Seating bump-outs onthe Lake Ontario side of thepedestrian promenade• Pedestrian and service vehicle beach accessramps• Vegetation enhance- ments along the HydroMarsh• Reconstruction of Mil-lennium Square, including a stage platform for water-front events• Renovations to the ex- isting washroom building • Relocation of the sculp-ture at Millennium Square Options to address park-ing will be part of a sepa-rate study. The Beachfront Park improvements will be com-pleted in two phases, begin-ning with the elevated Wa-terfront Trail and east beach area in order to re-establish the waterfronttrail connection. The sec- ond phase will include Mil-lennium Square and thewest beach area improve-ments. Funds for the prepara-tion of detailed designdrawings will likely be in- cluded in the 2022 capitalbudget and the phasing of Ward 3 Coun. Shaheen Butt was disappointed thatthe plan does not includevolleyball courts or asplash pad. Director of engineeringservices Richard Holbornsaid volleyball is not idealfor the area due to potential damage, despite there be-ing seven courts in thepast. He said "It's a very narrow strip of land withprovincially significantwetlands on the north sandand a dynamic beach on the south side and a water-front trail in between."Holborn noted that beach volleyball did notmake the list of the Top 5activities or elements when the public was sur-veyed, but said staff couldlook at ways to include aninformal playing area on the beach. "I wish we had room fora splash park and I wish wehad room for the courts down there but unfortu-nately Mother Natureshort-ended us on that," said Ward 2 regional coun-cillor Bill McLean.Ward 3 regional council-lor David Pickles received confirmation from the con-sultant that a potentialsplash pad on a smaller scale will be looked at in fu-ture discussions.Pickles has long been an advocate for waterfront im-provements."Many residents havecommented about the boardwalk east of Millen-nium Square that was de-stroyed and has been re-moved, and the difficulty that they have experiencedin dragging bikes andstrollers through that ar- ea," he said in a recentFacebook post.Pickles explained fur-ther detailing of the design, approvals and discussionswith adjacent land ownersare proposed for 2022, and construction will be com-pleted in several phases, beginning in 2023. The Town of Ajax andthe Region of Durham sup-ported the project.Ramesbottom explained that an old ditch had beendraining in the area, andthe work included pluggingit up to re-establish the wet-land community. Now, thewetland is acting as a basinto hold water and release it slowly. Working to establishaquatic vegetation is a lot ofwork, said Ramesbottom, and it took about threeweeks of heavy labour. "We're always aiming toprovide additional habi-tat," Ramesbottom said.According to DUC's web- site, new wetland restora-tion projects "support thenatural infrastructure of the landscape by capturingphosphorus and other nu-trients before they enterwaterways" and, ultimate- ly, lakes such as Lake Onta-rio. Ramesbottom hasworked with the TRCA since 2008 and has found"there's always been a needfor restoration projects." But the interest in re-storing wetlands seems tohave grown as more peoplebecome aware of environ- mental issues such as cli-mate change. "There is more fundingfloating around and I thinkmore people are talkingabout it, which is great," he said. The project cost $178,000and was funded by DUC's Ontario Wetlands Conser-vation Partner Program, a$30-million, five-year pro-gram focusing on enhanc- ing and restoring wetlandsin the Great Lakes water-sheds, supporting munici-pal stormwater manage- ment and building climatechange resiliency."We're kind of doing wet- land restoration all overthe jurisdiction," Rames-bottom said. "We like to domore all the time and it was great that (DUC) had somefunding so we could part- ner with them and do workin Durham."Longtime Pickering res-ident and environmentalist Larry Noonan said in anemail, "This is good newsfor the Duffins Creek wa- tershed and especially thelower Duffins Creek areasouth of Bayly." After looking at photos of the work, Noonan notedTRCA put old logs and deadtrees (called snags) in andaround the pond. "These are good for birdsfor nesting, resting, foodstoring, hunting positions, roosting and resting," hesaid. "Snags are also goodfor some mammals, rep-tiles, amphibians and in- sects. All of this shows goodplanning." Noonan added that inaddition to the benefits for animals, the pond will al-low the water to slow downand filter out some contam-inants before it proceeds further down the river. Ramesbottom said theTRCA planted about 1,00native trees and shrubs as part of the project. Noonansaid the tree planting isbeneficial and will "eventu- ally help to cool the waterwhich is good for the cold-water fish in the river."TRCA continues to work in the area."I would say we have a lot of currently identified op-portunities in Ajax and Pickering," Ramesbottomsaid. "So we'll just be work-ing with the various munic-ipalities and potential fund- ing sources to figure outwhere we could get moneyto do that work." STORY BEHIND THESTORY: As Pickering andAjax residents continue to be concerned about envi-ronmental issues in thearea, Durhamregion.comwanted to share some of the good work that's beingdone. NEWS Continued from page 3 ’THIS IS GOOD NEWS FOR THE DUFFINS CREEK WATERSHED’ "We're kind of doing wetland restoration all over the jurisdiction. Reg.) 773/21. The Town of Ajax requested that the Minister consider making the Zoning Order. O. Reg. 773/21 applies to land municipally known as 221 Church Street South (Subject Lands). A Zoning Order regulates the use of land and the erection, location and use of any buildings or structures on the land. This Zoning Order permits a multi-storey distribution centre and associated uses while protecting environmental features on the Subject Lands. Pursuant to subsection 47(4) of the Planning Act, and except for the purposes of section 24, the Minister deemed O. Reg. 773/21 to be and to always have been a by-law passed by the Council of the Town of Ajax. For illustrative purposes, the Subject Lands are shown in the map below. During the COVID-19 social distancing period when offices are closed, a copy of O. Reg. 773/21 may be viewed on the province’s e-Laws website: (https://www.ontario.ca/laws/regulation/r21773). The Regions will submit an Environmental Screening Report to the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks on December 20, 2021 for review and approval. The Environmental Screening Report has been prepared to increase the annual processing capacity at the DYEC from 140,000 tonnes per year to 160,000 tonnes per year. This additional capacity is needed to accommodate population growth within the two Regions, allow the DYEC to operate more efficiently and produce more energy. This increase in capacity will not require any modifications to existing infrastructure. The Screening process involved identifying and applying criteria for potential environmental effects, public/ external agency consultation and the development of measures to mitigate any identified environmental effects. The proposed capacity increase is not expected to have any significant net effects on the environment. The results of the study were documented in an Environmental Screening Report, available for a 60-calendar day review period from December 20, 2021 to February 18, 2022. The report is available for public review at durhamyorkwaste.ca. If you are unable to access the digital copy of the report posted on this website or require an alternative format, please contact 1-800-667-5671. If you have concerns or comments, please contact The Regional Municipality of Durham (contact details below) to discuss. If concerns regarding this project cannot be resolved in discussion with The Regional Municipality of Durham or The Regional Municipality of York, a person or party may request that the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks make an order for the project to comply with Part II of the EnvironmentalAssessmentAct (referred to as a Part II Order), which would elevate the project to an Individual EnvironmentalAssessment. Requests for a Part II Order must be submitted in writing to the Minister of the Environment at the address listed below no later than 60-calendar days from the date of this Notice (December 20, 2021).As of July 1, 2018, a Part II Order Request Form must be used to request a Part II Order. The Part II Order Request Form is available online at forms.ssb.gov.on.ca. Please submit the completed form to each of the following three individuals. If no Part II Order requests are received by 4:30 p.m. on February 18, 2022, The Regional Municipality of Durham and The Regional Municipality of York intend to proceed with the process as scheduled.
