Despite the exceptionally challenging circumstances, educators have come together with colleagues and students to start the year and make classrooms feel warm, welcoming, and safe—virtually and in-person. The dedication to students is always remarkable, but never has this been more evident than this year. As we look to 2022, we must work with communities to build the learning environments we all deserve and need. The education system is held together by dedicated staff, provided with insufficient resources to address the increased needs brought on by the pandemic. The time is coming to elect to office those who are committed to providing the supports students need to be successful, who value and prioritize our education system. We wish all education workers, students and their families a restful break from school. Recharge and stay safe. Warmest wishes for better things in 2022. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM How the world has changed in the last century, in some ways for the better! There was a tradition inthe 1800s for men to push back from the table after Christmas dinner, join a group of neighbours and choose sides to see who could shoot the most wild- life, including every birdthey saw. Then, in 1900, a handful of enlightened in- dividuals, dismayed at the dreadful toll that "Christ- mas side hunts" were hav- ing on bird populations, de- cided to count birds in-stead of killing them. It started a great new tradi- tion that's grown into a fun, healthy outing for wholefamilies during the holi- days: Christmas bird counts. More than 2,000 ofthem are held throughout the Americas now (last year 469 here in Canada). This year's three-weekcount period kicked off with the Huntsville count on Dec. 14, held as early as possible, before ice on lakes pushes all waterfowl southward. The Oshawa count is scheduled for Dec.19, and both Pickering and Uxbridge on Dec. 27. Each tally covers a 24-kilometre- diameter circle, rims of which practically overlap in southern Ontario, so a whole lot of Durham Re-gion's wintering birds will be surveyed. The best part of going on a count is getting out in the fresh air and focusing on birds — a sure cure for thenature deficit disorder so many of us suffer from. But feeder watchers peering out their windows can alsocontribute to this valuable citizen science collection of data for biologists study-ing bird populations, too many of which are in seri- ous decline. The magic of moderntechnology allows species and numbers to be com- piled so much more easily than in the old days of pap- er lists and Canada Post. I went online to Birds Cana- da and immediately founda satellite map of the coun- try peppered with count circles, from Hay River to Halifax. Click on a site and you find the compiler's con- tact information, date scheduled and a pop-upmap of the area, showing lakes, woods, roads and riv- ers — everything you'd need to take part. A glori- ous hour sped by as I roamed across Canada, checking out counts I'dlove to join. There's one in Kugluktuk, at the mouth of the spectacular Copper- mine River, which I've pad-dled! Arctic Bay, way up on Baffin Island, is the far-thest north count. How do you even find birds in win- ter darkness up there? The single participant last yearspent more than two hours in the field and somehow found four species — three common redpolls, seven hoary redpolls, five rock ptarmigan and 371 ravens, many of the last likely atthe local dump. For more information: birdscana- da.org/bird-science/ christmas-bird-count. Margaret Carney is a nature-appreciation col-umnist for MetrolandDurham newspapers. CHRISTMAS A TIME TO COUNT BIRDS MARGARET CARNEYNOTES THERE WERE469 TALLIES INCANADA LAST YEAR MARGARET CARNEY Column The common redpoll is often noted on Canadian Christmas Bird Counts, when citizens help scientists by gathering data on birds in a particular area, as its large range includes northern North America. Mike McEvoy photo COMMON REDPOLL POOR HIGHWAY DESIGN To the editor:Some traffic bottle-necks are inevitable, aswhen five lanes reduce to three on the eastboundHighway 401 in Ajax. However, a classic ex- ample of terrible design iswhere the new ramps fromthe 412 and Lake RidgeRoad come onto the west- bound 401. Traffic now backs up ev-ery day during most of the day with tremendous lossof time for thousands ofpeople and greater emis-sions from all the stalled traffic.Prior to these ramps be-ing opened, there was onlyever a traffic issue thereduring morning rush hour. Now, three ramp lanesjoin three live lanes, yet less than a kilometre fur-ther west the live lanes open up to five lanes! Had that very short, lessthan one-kilometre,stretch of highway be-tween where the ramps en- ter and the highway wid-ens been widened at thesame time as the ramps were installed, there wouldbe no bottleneck and trafficwould flow freely. To compound the prob- lem, the ramp lanes are solong that people duck intothem from the live lanes toget ahead a few car lengths and then cause furtherbackups where theysqueeze back in (More bad design!). We don't necessarilyneed more highways; weneed to have the Ministry of Transportation getsmarter about design andfix these type of choke points and bottlenecks! ANDY SCHWABE,PICKERING PICKERING OUT OF TOUCH WITH PORSCHE TRACK To the editor:Re: Pickering will behome to Porsche test track. In a recent news item, in the middle of the COP26Climate Conference, comes an announcement that Porsche will be build-ing a race track on theDurham Live site in Pick-ering. Just when we should befocusing on reducing car-bon emissions and trying to save our planet, Picker-ing will be inviting thepublic to race cars, burn-ing fuel and filling the air with tiny plastic tire parti-cles, just for entertain-ment.When will reality set in -we are on the brink of anenvironmental disaster.ROSEMARY OLIVER,PICKERING LETTERS & COMMENTARY 7 | Pic k e r i n g N e w s A d v e r t i s e r | P | T h u r s d a y , D e c e m b e r 1 6 , 2 0 2 1 dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m Stay Inside. The school was closedon Wednesday, Dec. 8 andwon't reopen to in-person learning until Jan. 3.The Durham DistrictSchool Board noted on its COVID advisory trackerthat there are three activecases and the people are in isolation. In a message to parents,Eleanor McIntosh, the school principal, said,"The Durham RegionHealth Department has de- clared a facility-wide out-break at our school andhas determined that our school will be closed to in-person learning for a mini-mum of two weeks. The earliest that students willbe able to return to in-per-son classes is after the Winter Break, January 3,2022."The health department is also "strongly recom-mending that all staff andstudents seek testing for COVID-19," McIntosh add-ed."At this time, we willnot be allowing access to the school to pick up anyitems that have been leftbehind. A plan is being de- veloped to allow access tothe school to pick up anyitems that have been leftbehind. This plan will be communicated with you,"she said.Classes will continuevirtually, she noted."This will be similar towhen schools were closedlast school year and that students should be logginginto their online classroomevery day. We will be mind-ful of varying family situa- tions and your child'steacher will be contactingyour child's class to share with you the plan for learn-ing," McIntosh said. A statement from the region's health depart-ment noted, "We have de-cided to close the school/ childcare due to the num-ber of cases and the num-ber of staff and studentswho have been dismissed. The closure will preventfurther spread of CO-VID-19 within the facility." Anyone who has been atthe school in recent daysare considered at risk forexposure and should self- monitor for COVID-19signs and symptoms for 10days from their last day of attendance at the school, the statement added."The Health Depart- ment is strongly recom-mending that all staff andstudents get tested for CO- VID-19 to identify addition-al cases in the school. Toget tested, go to covid-swab.lh.ca. If you cannot access the online bookingsite, call Durham HealthConnection Line at 905- 668-2020 or 1-800-841-2729,"the statement noted. COVID OUTBREAK CLOSES AJAX HIGH SCHOOL A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Ajax High School and the facility has been closed until Jan. 3. Students will continue to have classes virtually. Durham District School Board photo NEWS SIGN UP FOR OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER AT DURHAMREGION.COM ronto Star from 1899 untilhis death in 1948. He started the fund in1906 with the aim of pro-viding gift boxes to chil- dren experiencing pover-ty in Toronto, King said. This is the 116th annualcampaign. It started in Torontoand has expanded to pro-vide boxes to children inAjax, Pickering, Missis-sauga and Brampton."Over the years, we'veincreased the number of boxes. It's 50,000 gift boxesare being distributed" thisyear, King said. That's an increase of 5,000 boxes from 2020.For children ages fourto 12, each box contains a hoodie, a hat, mitts, socks,a book, a toy, a toothbrushand toothpaste and cook-ies. Boxes for newborns to three-year-olds have babyclothing and accessories. Each box is gender neu-tral and age appropriate.King said the receptionis "pretty amazing.""Sometimes, the fami- lies come to the door to getthe boxes and when thedoor closes, you hear thescreams and squeals of de- light from the kids. It'sprobably one of the mostrewarding parts of the whole Santa Claus pro-gram, is when giving tothe children. Sometimesit's not in front of you, it's when the door closes. Youcan hear it," she added. The COVID-19 pandem-ic has made the need forthe boxes even greater, she said."It's actually been in- teresting on a number ofdifferent levels. Number 1,with the job situation andwith COVID and with physical distancing," Kingsaid, noting certain work-places had to minimize the number of employeesworking at a time to com-ply with public health reg-ulations. "And, it's affect- ing families and the num-ber of hours they areworking, and they're notgetting the hours thatthey once had," King not-ed."The job losses in the community have been sig-nificant. As well as newCanadians and the Af-ghani refugees that are coming. We've made deliv-eries to three hotels thatare now housing new Ca- nadians in that way," shesaid."The fund is also ser-vicing (homeless) shelters for families in need thathad to leave their domi-ciles for whatever reason. We try to do our best tosource kids in need rightthrough the whole sys-tem," King said. The fund works with agencies, such as OntarioWorks, disability groupsand 130 service agencies to identify children whomight benefit from thecampaign. The fund is in the mid- dle of its fundraising cam-paign, with a goal of $1.5million. It runs to Dec. 31. As a kid, he watched his father Michael, a local realtor for 45 years, work hard in the real estate industry to build a reputation based on integrity, knowledge and profession- alism, traits he is proud to carry on in his own business today. Ryan Belmonte has been in real estate for 20 years, no small feat in an ever-changing busi- ness that was recently shook by a worldwide pandemic. It’s what he knows, and he enjoys helping his clients. Experienced in commercial, residential and investment real estate, Ryan Belmonte believes his experience puts him a cut above the rest. Commercial and residential real estate each demand a unique skillset as a realtor, working with different types of clients and their specific needs.Aswell,RyanBelmonteexplainsthatresi- dential real estate can be seasonal and cyclical, while commercial has different variables. These different perspectives in real estate keep Ryan Belmonte sharp, but also helps his clients make wise investment decisions. “That’s why I like doing both, and that’s why I like working for myselfasanindependentbroker,Icandoboth,” he says. “I have experience in many areas of the real estate market, which benefits my clients.” As an independent broker, Ryan Belmonte has the flexibility to work in different areas of real estate, growing a diverse list of clients to support all of their real estate needs. “I can adapt to whatever or wherever the business of real estate is trending,” he says. “My comfort zone is a lot larger than most realtors because of my experience and areas of practice.” “I can help put my clients at ease when they’re buying or selling,” he explains, since he follows trends in many areas of the real estate business. “My advantage is that I have a well- rounded depth of knowledge in many areas of real estate, I can help guide them to the best of my ability, with that wealth of experience,” he says. A direct approach is what you can expect with Belmonte Real Estate. Ryan Belmonte himself insists he does not sugar-coat or beat around the bush when it comes to giving his clients advice, “I direct people as if I am making the investment myself,” he says. Ryan Belmonte also educates his clients along their journey of real estate investing, especially commercial or income properties, helping his clients to become better investors. “They know this is what Ryan would do too,” he explains. For Ryan Belmonte, he takes the most pride in his business being a “a one-man operation,” from the beginning. “When the phone rings, you know it is going to be me on the other end of the line,” he says, adding he believes his clientsappreciatehisreliabilityandattentionto detail. Ryan Belmonte has created his own brand in the local real estate market, meaning “every- thing that goes on is a direct reflection on me,” he says, and he is very proud of that brand. “Peoplecanidentifymybusiness, andwhatIdo, and understand that it’s Ryan, it’s me.” If you’re looking to buy or sell a residential, commercial or investment property “I’m here for any and all of their real estate needs,” Ryan Belmonte says. Niagara Falls is the entertainment capital of Canada. Enjoy live music events, from the concerts at the Avalon theatre to the upcomin Niagara Falls Mu- sic Live beginning Dec. 27 cele- brating the return of live music over six nights in 20 venues with 75+ performances, including New Year’s Eve with Blue Rodeo, Ser- ena Ryder and Crown Lands. Find all the event details at musiclive. ca For theatre buffs, the famous Shaw Festival, one of North America’s finest cultural attrac- tions in Niagara-on-the-Lake is only minutes away. Enter the Clifton Hill district, a family-friendly entertainment hub for the young and young at heart. Mysoncouldn’twaittododge dinosaurs while sinking putts at Dinosaur Adventure Golf, and by the second hole, had his eyes on the elevated go-kart track that awaited us at Niagara Speedway. My daughter and my wife were busy visiting their favourite celebrities in one of two Holly- wood-themed wax museums just steps from where our taxi had dropped us. The Niagara SkyWheel is open year round and from the top offers spectacular views of the Falls. Bordered by bowling alleys, classic carnival midway games and indoor circuses? Yes, a simple purchase of a fun pass allowed my family into three different choice events, and before we knew what was next, my daughter and I were guiding each other through mazes of mirrors, ribbons and laughter. Nearby is the Fallsview In- doorWaterpark, a three-acre water slide paradise. And just above our heads, screaming voices emanate from a roller coaster that appears to be running in and out of a build- ing. My daughter squeezes her fun pass tight. “Dad, this is much more than just a waterfall.” Thiscontentwasfundedandapproved bytheadvertiser. He was loved by his family and friends. RODRIQUEZ, Leonie ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Our wonderful and devoted Mom, Grandma and Auntie passed away peacefully on December 7, 2021. Born in Kingston, Jamaica to Louis and Gloria O'Neill and moved to Pickering, Canada in 1975. Leonie was a devoted, fun- loving mother to David (Di), Mark - deceased (Deb) and Michele. A loving, wonderful Grandma to Brianne (Mike), Jordan, Dylan, Mallory, Abby and Evan and was expecting her first great-grandchild in the coming months. Loving sister to Judith-deceased (John), Leighton (Judy), and Jennifer. She was a loving and caring Auntie and Great Auntie to all of her nieces and nephews. Mom was strong, quiet and a fiercely independent woman, who never missed a family occasion or celebration and shared in all of our proud moments. Special thanks to the wonderful doctors and nurses at Lakeridge Health - Ajax for their gentle care of mom in her final days and the support they showed the family. We think of you in silence, no eye may see us weep; but many silent tears are shed when others are asleep. A sweet little flower, nipped in the bud, no grief or sorrow knew; just came to earth to win our love and then to Heaven withdrew. Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep, I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glint on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn’s rain. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. There is a link death cannot sever, love and remembrance last forever. A loving person, so gentle and kind; what a wonderful memory you left behind. Your memory is as dear today, as in the hour you passed away. 1-800-263-6480 classifieds@metroland.comCLASSIFIEDSOBITUARIES | ANNOUNCEMENTS | JOBS | MARKETPLACE IN MEMORIAM NOVENAS SPECIAL OCCASIONS dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m New s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , D e c e m b e r 1 6 , 2 0 2 1 | 26 WANTED: Vinyl Records & Stereos $$ paid for LPs, 45s & Stereo Gear.
