Meal program use is upby 17 per cent, he added.Around 90 families use St. Vincent de Paul permonth."Two years ago, we werearound 75," said manager Christine Boyd. She sees a lot of new fac-es."We don't go a monthwithout, I would say, be-tween three to five newfamilies," Boyd said. Earle said the loss of em-ployment during the pan-demic is the biggest con-tributor. Some local programshave expanded their ser- vices and shifted criteria tohelp people struggling in the short-term, which canalso be a reason."Some of them have just grown by being open tomore people," Earle said. And it's been hard forpeople to get back on their feet, constantly playingcatch-up on credit card bills or rent payments."It just becomes a cycle, so it takes a long period oftime for people to recover,"Earle said. He said there's not onlyan increase in the numberof people using the foodbanks, but also in the num- ber of visits. "In a normal year we see on average people visitonce every two months," he said. "It's shifted to aboutonce every six weeks sincethe beginning of the pan- demic."Single adults and singleparents - largely singlemothers - are the biggest users. Low-income seniors, people with disabilities and new Canadians are also ex-periencing the need forfood support. Earle notednew Canadians generally use the food banks whenthey arrive in Canada, buttheir use decreases once they get established.Thankfully, for St.Paul's, the donations havebeen pouring in. "We get calls all the timeabout people wanting to do-nate," Jocz said. "I hope (others are) getting thesame support."But for St. Vincent dePaul, there's been a decline in donations. The recentdrive-by food drive, whichwas a big success last year, was dismal in comparison. "That's going to affect usgreatly because whatcomes in around Christ- mas time is what sustainsus for the next year," Boydsaid.A lot of previous donors are struggling themselves."A lot of people have not gone back to work," shesaid. "It's a big change."She's grateful thatschool is back in session and a lot of them have beenanswering her call for help."Otherwise we'd be struggling for food," shesaid. While all three aregrateful for their core group of volunteers, thenumber has decreased, es-pecially since many volun- teers are seniors andchoose to stay home duringthe pandemic.St. Paul's, St. Vincent De Paul's and Feed The Needall have information onhow to donate or volunteeron their websites. Without passionate people putting in the research and striving for an improved tomorrow, itishardtoimagineglobally, and even locally, what the world might be like. Innovation is the action or process of making changes to something already established with new methods. It can alsomeanto introducesomethingnew. Close to home, Durham Region is an area where innovation thrives. From the earliest creations of the McLaughlin Carriage Co., eventually becoming a motor car industry giant and forming what is now General Motors Canada, many might think the buck stops with theautomotiveindustry. The reality is while GM was and continuestobeapivotaldemonstration oftheinnovationinDurham, numerous other businesses are breaking the mould and pushing countless indus- triesforward–allinyourownbackyard. Businesses in Durham Region have been solving global problems for more than a century, stemming from various sectors offering products, services and business models growing and thriving in the area. In 1941, Defence Industries Limited was founded in Ajax, and became the largest shell-filling plant in the British Commonwealth. In 1986 the CANDU reactor at OPG’s Pickering and Darlington Nuclear Generating Stations was listed as one of Canada’s top 10 engineering achievements of the last 100years.In1998,LakeridgeHealthwas formed as Durham Region hospitals converged to create a leading health system.Thesearejustsomeoftheinno- vations to break ground in Durham. “There is a long and interesting industrial history here in Durham and it is very broad in terms of the various sectors,” says Simon Gill, Director, Economic Development and Tourism at Invest Durham. “As the momentum builds in innovation, the opportunity for businesses in Durham Region is excellent, there is so much opportunity being created.” Invest Durham is the Regional Municipality of Durham’s Economic Development and Tourism team, that work with partners to support innova- tive businesses within the region by facilitating connections and introduc- tions, helping businesses find space to grow, and supporting the growth of talent in Durham. Their mandate is to create jobs, and they work with local partners to support startups and busi- nesses to help them accelerate to the nextlevel. “We support businesses in a lot of differentwaystohelpthemflourishand grow in Durham Region,” Gill says. He notes a sustainable economy and businesscommunityhingesonadiverse group of sectors working together. A considerable amount of those factors comefrompost-secondaryinstitutions. “The post-secondary part of Durham Region’s story is really important,” Gill says. Durham College, Ontario Tech University and Trent University Durham GTA call Durham Region home. As a result, they have brought with them tools for innovation. Ontario Tech’s include the ACE Climatic Wind Tunnel, capable of imitating a hot desert day or frigid blizzard, while Durham College’s Centre for Food, AI Hub and Centre for Cybersecurity Innovation drive the future of farm-to-table, AI research and cybersecurity. Trent Durham’s students focus on social innovation. Thissupportsandcreatesanecosystem transforming the prosperity of Durham Region. “That’s a big part of innovation – in the sense that on those campuses, there is a lot of research,” Gill says. He adds that those facilities delve into various, globally relevant deep worlds including technology, cyber- security and engi- neering. The talent who graduate from these institu- tions then provide a unique outlet for local businesses looking to hire professionals to drive their innova- tionsforward. Gill points out when it comes to technology, therecan bequiteanoverlapin different sectors, such as cybersecurity. “Cybersecurity is relevant in essentially every sector now, it’s important in health care, it’s important in automo- tive, it’s important in any industry that uses smart technology,” he says. Within the past two years, Durham Region has had several breakthrough innovations, including: • The Darlington Nuclear announce- ment of planned production of a life-saving medical isotope molyb- denum-99 (Mo-99) which is used for patientswhoneedindepthimagingto detect and diagnose harmful diseases. • The Cancer Quality Council of Ontario awarded The R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre at Lakeridge Health the 2019 Quality and Innovation Award for significant contributions to quality and innova- tion in the delivery of cancer care in Ontario. • Kendal Hill Farms reacted to the onsetofCOVID-19bylaunchingavirtual farmers’ market, collaborating with morethan30farmsacrosstheregionto deliver local produce and products to home across the GTA. An emerging wave of innovation coming to Durham is in the form of small modular reactors (SMRs), nuclear fission reactors which are smaller than their conventional counterparts and designed to be manufactured in one location and transported to another to be installed. “That will change the way nuclear energy is supplied across Canada and around the world as well,” Gill says. In 2021, The Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) named Durham one of their Smart21 Communities of the Year. This distinction is key for recognizing communities around the world who are successfully developing innovative solutions. “Innovation is really essential, and it’s essential in every business to refine techniques and make your work more efficient,” Gill says. “The contributions being made in research and develop- ment in Durham Region are affecting industriesaroundtheworld.” THIS CONTENT WAS FUNDED AND APPROVED BY THE ADVERTISER Innovation pivotal to the success of Durham Region To learn more about Invest Durham and the region’s long history of innovative accomplishments, visit www.investdurham.ca/innovation. This facility, along with the Durham York Energy Centre, will provide a fully integrated waste management system, highlighting the environmental leadership underway in Durham Region. Both energy from waste and anaerobic digestion are safe, proven technologies already used across North America and in the Greater Toronto Area. There are many environmental benefits that will come with the Mixed Waste Pre-sort and Anaerobic Digestion Facility: • Renewable energy – Anaerobic digestion is anticipated to generate approximately 4 million cubic metres of valuable renewable natural gas by capturing methane that would otherwise be released into the environment. • Greenhouse gas reduction – The renewable natural gas generated from the Anaerobic Digestion facility has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 7,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by replacing traditional fossil fuel usage. This is the greatest reduction among all current Region projects. • Waste diversion – The mixed waste pre-sort will remove organics, metals, and non-combustible material from garbage bags to further increase diversion and defer the need to expand the Durham York Energy Centre. Environmental benefits of the Durham York Energy Centre: • Electrical energy – The facility generates up to 17.5 megawatts of renewable energy. A portion of the electricity is used to power the operation of the Durham York Energy Centre. The remaining is then delivered to the community—enough to power approximately 10,000 homes per year. • Greenhouse gas reduction – By recovering energy from waste at the Durham York Energy Centre, we are significantly decreasing greenhouse gas emissions associated with trucking waste to distant landfills and methane generation in those landfills. • Waste diversion – The energy from waste process at the Durham York Energy Centre reduces the volume of waste sent to landfill by up to 90 per cent. In 2020, the Durham York Energy Centre processed 144,798 tonnes of garbage, while recovering approximately 4,168 tonnes of metal. The new Mixed Waste Pre-sort and Anaerobic Digestion Facility will be in Clarington next to the Durham York Energy Centre to reduce environmental impacts from transportation and provide opportunities for synergies. School board officials in Dur-ham say student bus passes aretoo pricey and are calling on Dur-ham Region Transit (DRT) to col-laborate on cost savings. The Durham District SchoolBoard (DDSB) and Durham Cath- olic District School Board will bevoicing concerns at an upcomingmeeting of the Durham RegionTransit Executive Committee. Youth ages 13 to 19 in Durhamcurrently pay $93.50 for a month-ly PRESTO pass. "The present fare is beyondthe financial means of many stu-dents," says a Nov. 22 memoran-dum from the Durham Catholic board. The cost is also challenging forschool boards that buy passes to transport students to special pro-grams. For example, the DurhamCatholic board purchases bus passes for students attending theArts and Media Program as wellas students in the alternative ed- ucation and adult upgrading pro-gram. The board buys about 4,100passes per year at a cost of ap-proximately $383,900. Durham Region Transit offersa "Y10" discounted student passfor $53.50 a month — on the condi-tion that students purchase monthly passes consecutivelyeach month from September toJune. However, school boards buy-ing bulk passes for students areunable to access that rate. A pilotproject approved in spring 2021 allows school boards to buy bulkyouth passes for $73.50 each if aminimum number are pur- chased."Post-secondary students atDurham College and Ontario Tech University have access to aU-Pass for $144.50 per semester, which equals approximately $36.13 per month. We are request-ing that DRT offer bus passes tothe DDSB at this cost for students eligible for transportation," theDDSB said in a statement. "In oth-er municipalities, public transitagencies tailor services to sup- port students getting to/fromschool such as providing addi-tional bus service during peak periods. We are seeking a similarrelationship that will be benefi-cial in the long-term for both DRTand the communities we serve." "With the province-wideshortage of school bus driversand the ongoing impact it has on student transportation, it is im-portant that we look at additionalways to support students gettingto school, with innovative solu- tions that support the use of pub-lic transit," said DDSB vice-chairChristine Thatcher.DRT said its student fares "re- present significant reductions"on the regular adult fares of $117per month or $3.25 per trip when using PRESTO and notes the Y10program and "Summer 2 for 1"program provide additional sav-ings. "For youth who take advan-tage of DRT's incentive pro-grams, average monthly fares are 40 per cent less today than in2013," a statement from DRTnotes. STORIES OF THE PANDEMIC:KRISTA MACNEIL When a mother and herchild have underlyinghealth conditions, a globalpandemic can be especiallydifficult. Krista MacNeil, aclinical director with a vic- tim services organization, worried she or her familywould fall victim to CO-VID-19. Here's her pandem- ic story:"My youngest daughterhas health issues that usu- ally land her in hospital four to five times per year, so the pandemic has creat-ed additional anxiety interms of risk to her. Wehave likely been more iso- lated than most, at times, because of wanting to pro-tect her. Luckily, she has re- mained healthy. "I found solace in myfriends and colleagues, whoalso worked on the front lines, because they seemedlike the only ones who trulyunderstood the fears we were facing. When convers-ing with anyone outside ofthat reality, I felt more frus-tration when questions were asked like, 'is it reallythat bad?'"As the only full-time so-cial worker in the ER at the time, colleagues would of-ten come to me for support. So naturally, during the pandemic, colleagues andfriends also confided in and relied on me. This had both positive and negative con-sequences — in terms offeeling validation for mutu-al frustrations. However, it never allowed me to get abreak from the fear andanxiety that was so preva- lent in everyone aroundme. "Also, my parents andin-laws reside in New- foundland. My childrenhave not seen their grand-parents in almost two years. While some peoplelost the ability to travel andtake vacations during thepandemic, I also lost my ability to see my family."As a natural helper —in both my personal andprofessional life — I am of- ten the go-to person forfriends, family and col-leagues who need support. But, when almost everyonearound me was struggling at the same time, it became a necessity to also priori-tize my own health andwell-being. I needed to letgo of things that did not support that. "Things I did for myselfpreviously when it was'convenient,' I now treat as a priority, even when it isn'tconvenient. Being discon-nected from my hometown, cultural events and familyhas made me want to visit home more, when we do have the chance again."It took a pandemic, butI've finally added myself tothe list of priorities." My daughter and my wife were busy visiting their favourite celebrities in one of two Holly- wood-themed wax museums just steps from where our taxi had dropped us. The entrance to the 53 metre Skywheel is more active than the wheel itself. Bordered by bowling alleys, classic carnival midway games and indoor circuses? Yes, a simple purchase of a fun pass al- lowed my family into three differ- ent choice events, and before we knew what was next, my daugh- ter and I were guiding each other through mazes of mirrors, ribbons and laughter. South of us is the Fallsview Indoor Waterpark, a three-acre water slide paradise. And just above our heads, screaming voic- es emanate from a roller coaster that appears to be running in and out of a building. Reg.) 771/21. The City of Kawartha Lakes requested that the Minister consider making a Zoning Order. O. Reg. 771/21 applies to approximately 119.6 hectares of land municipally known as 258 Highway 36, 417 Fieldside Road and 210 Highway 3 in the City of Kawartha Lakes (Subject Lands). A Zoning Order regulates the use of land and the erection, location and use of any buildings or structures on the land. This Zoning Order permits a mixed-use community to develop up to 1,450 homes, a community-hub and gathering place, open spaces and up to two parks, in addition to those uses already permitted on the subject lands. Pursuant to subsection 47(4) of the Planning Act, and except for the purposes of section 24, the Minister deemed O. Reg. 771/21 to be and to always have been a by-law passed by the Council of the City of Kawartha Lakes. For illustrative purposes, the Subject Lands are shown in the map below. During the COVID-19 social distancing period when offices are closed, a copy of O. Reg. 771/21 may be viewed on the province’s e-Laws website: (https://www.ontario.ca/laws/regulation/r21771). Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. There is a link death cannot sever, love and remembrance last forever. We are sad withinour memory, lonely are our hearts today;for the one we loved so dearly has forever been called away. We think of you in silence, no eye may see us weep; but many silent tears are shedwhen others are asleep. Pleasant in manner, patient in pain, our loss is your eternal gain. Your cheery ways and smiling face, are a pleasure to recall; you had a kindly word for each, and died beloved by all. May the winds of love blow softly and whisper so you’ll hear; we will always love and miss you and wish that you were here. 1-800-263-6480 classifieds@metroland.comCLASSIFIEDSOBITUARIES | ANNOUNCEMENTS | JOBS | MARKETPLACE PROFESSIONAL IN MEMORIAM SPECIAL OCCASIONS 29 | Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , D e c e m b e r 9 , 2 0 2 1 dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m WANTED WE PAY FOR GOLF BALLS Pay $0.10 to $0.24 per ball Purchase all year long 416-889-9365 Peter NO MIN QTY OR NO MAX !!
