SPEED CAMERAS IN AJAX: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW KRISTEN CALIS KCalis@durhamregion.com Speed cameras will be in effect in Ajax beginning Monday, Jan. 10. Metroland file photo NEWS THE CAMERAS WILLSTART SNAPPINGPICTURES ON JAN. 10 A new 7,000-square- foot event space is nowopen in Pickering and it'sthe first banquet venue ofits kind in the city. The Pickering EventCentre is located at 1755Pickering Parkway nearBrock Road and Highway 401. The centre is owned byRockwood Hospitality, which specializes inevent, banquet and con-ference facilities."We're trying to make it a bit different from whatyou would expect from abanquet hall," says Abh- ishek Pandya, chief oper-ating officer for RockwoodHospitality. "It's urban in- dustrial — no carpeting, no chandeliers. It's morelike an art gallery style."The venue has seating for 200 people and offersin-house and catered foodoptions as well as in-house audio/visual pack- ages.Pandya says menushave been designed to ap- peal to a diverse range ofguests, including a SouthAsian package, Caribbean package and an Islamic wedding reception pack-age with a halal menu. The new space has been in the works since beforethe pandemic. Johney Brar, CEO ofRockwood Hospitality, says Pickering has a lackof venues of this type, which means people often have to look at places likeScarborough or Missis-sauga to host weddings and events. "Pickering is growing,it's an up and coming city... it's huge for us to be the first venue like this," hesays. Are you opening a newbusiness in Durham? Tell us about it! "There's more animals. They've broadened theirdistance, they've colonized new habitats," he said. They've been hybridiz-ing with wolves, becomingcoywolves, and are larger than they were in the past. "This species and a cou-ple of others have reallybeen able to take advan-tage of those changes andbecoming top dog in thoseenvironments," Murray said.Humans play a largepart in the coyote's abilityto thrive. "There are certainlythings that we do that en- courage the animals to sortof lose their inhibitions, ifyou will, and increase thelikelihood that they'll have interactions with hu-mans," Murray said.Feeding them, either in- tentionally or not, willmake them more comfort-able around people. The Town of Whitby sees this problem. It cur-rently prohibits the feed-ing of wildlife on public land, and under an amend-ment moved at a recentcommittee of the wholemeeting, it plans to extend that to private property aswell."When the little crittersare being fed and there are scraps around, it attractsthe bigger critters," saidCentre Ward Coun. Joanne Drumm. The City of Oshawa is al-so working on a new Wild-life Management Bylaw. Pets, especially cats, canbecome a food source for coyotes if let outside unat-tended. Smith was perplexedwhen the coyote didn't eatCoco; he saw on video thatthe coyote shook his dog for about 20 seconds before it"just dropped her and just left."Murray was not sur- prised by this, and said of-ten dogs are "seen as poten-tial competition."He, too, had a dog that was killed by a coyote onhis property in the past. Murray does not believe recent incidents of coyotesbiting children, three ofwhich have been reportedrecently in Oshawa, are in- tentional attacks."If a coyote wanted to at-tack someone, there wouldbe multiple bite wounds," he said.Instead, they're testingthe child. "They're trying to seewhether or not this is aweak individual they couldpotentially take down," he said. When a human encoun- ters a coyote, they should not turn their back."Stand your ground, make your presence known, wave your arms, scream at the animal,"Murray said. While Murray believes in shooting and killing acoyote when it becomes aproblem, simply killing the animals in an attempt todecrease the population isnot the answer."You create a vacancy and it'll only be a matter oftime before you have moreanimals move in on that ar- ea," he said. For the most part, coy-otes will keep to them-selves. "In most cases, coyotesgo through their entirelives without causing anyproblems," Murray said. –With files from TimKelly. Born the last of seven children on February 20, 1930 in Willesden, London, England, Gerry lived in Canada for 64 years. An avid sports fan, Gerry played cricket for many years, was a tireless Arsenal supporter and always enjoyed a game of cards. He played the piano and had just completed writing the story of his early days growing up in England. Gerry enjoyed life to the fullest and often remarked at how truly lucky he felt to have had such a wonderful life. Beloved husband to his late wife Anita after 57 years of marriage, he is survived by his daughters Kim (Mark) and Karen (Henry). Loving Grandad of Chelsea and Courtney. He is also survived by nieces Penny, Jacqueline, Anne, Sharon and nephews David, Alan, Roger and Neil.
