Pickering resident Da-vid Steele took on the taskof planning a vision for the waterfront more than twodecades ago. While someimprovements were made, such as the reconstructionof the harbour entrance toFrenchman's Bay, Steele ismostly disappointed with the progress so far."It's good news/badnews and we just have tokeep plugging away to getrid of the bad news," saidSteele, who was the chairof the Pickering Mayors Task Force, which submit-ted its detailed report,Pickering Waterfront 2001.Many of the waterfront problems could have been avoided, he said, like whenthe popular boardwalk andplayground at Beachfront Park were damaged byhigh water levels in 2019."We didn't want the Mil-lennium Square to extend as far as it did on the eastside, but they did whatthey did," he said, adding the task force also felt theboardwalk should havebeen raised.Brenner said: "If we were to step back in timewe would have thought wewere ahead of the curvewith the boardwalk we put in. We just really didn't fac-tor in Mother Nature."Brenner is curious to see what and if the publicwould like to see in itsplace. A new park? Anoth-er boardwalk? Or some- thing different? Brenner said changes inthe environment and pop-ular use have taken a toll on the waterfront."This is a damaged can-vas that needs to be re-stored because so much has changed," Brennersaid. It's a beautiful canvasbut it's just been damaged." The city wants to knowmore about opinions re-garding watercraft typesand launch locations. "If boating and launch-ing is going to be importantto them, how do we do thatand where on the bay ar- ea?" Brenner said.Steele agreed this is animportant topic, as well as conversations aroundstorm water management, water quality, and a betterparking plan. "The parking is an is- sue, a real issue," Steelesaid. The city has been mak-ing small changes, such asplans to implement paidparking for out-of-town visitors at the waterfront. Steele said it's a good ideabut the cost of up to $30 is too high. The task force had rec-ommended a shuttle busservice from the Pickering GO Station, but it never transpired. According to consultation from the firstpublic survey, residentsfelt a shuttle service would be beneficial as well. The task force had rec-ommended public wash-rooms on the west spit — there are currently wash-rooms on the east side.Brenner confirmed the west washrooms have beenbudgeted and will be builtsoon.Steele hopes the youn- ger generation will weighin on the vision."It's for them to have their wishes, and theirwishes quite interestinglyare very similar to what'sin (our) report," he said. The survey closes onNov. 30. Visit Let's TalkPickering to weigh in. STORY BEHIND THESTORY:Pickering's water-front has gained in pop- ularity during the CO-VID-19 pandemic and theCity of Pickering is work-ing to ensure it remains enjoyable and protected. NEWS Continued from page 1 'THIS IS A DAMAGED CANVAS THAT NEEDS TO BE RESTORED' Dave Steele chaired the Mayor's Waterfront 2001 Task Force, which prepared a report with recommendations on how to best shape the future of Pickering's waterfront. "Why would they go in the trap if they'vegot all of the nature and agriculture rightthere for the taking?" said Brougham resi-dent Mary Delaney. She has spotted the Eurasian wild boarsseveral times, either on her property orwandering nearby roads. "It's incredibly challenging," Delaneysaid. "They're smart, they're so smart."Ministry of Northern Development,Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry (NDMNRF) spokesperson Jolanta Kowal-ski said staff have been working to catchthe pigs since Saturday, Nov. 6."We are attempting to trap and removethe entire group — this is the strategy thathas worked successfully in other jurisdic-tions such as New York state," she said. "The NDMNRF wild pig team set up a cor-ral trap with bait to draw the boar in. Thismay take some time, as there are still manyfood options with crop fields in the area." The ministry is urging the public not tohunt the boar, since it "actually makes the problem worse."Cameron Richardson, Town of Ajax su-pervisor of environmental sustainabilityand climate change, was not surprised to learn of the pig sightings."This is something I've been pushing forpersonally, for farmers to be prepared for a potentially devastating species establish-ment," he said. He's concerned because "invasive spe-cies negatively impact natural ecosys- tems, threaten biodiversity, and can evenbe detrimental to human health."Richardson said one of the most effec- tive ways to manage invasive species isthrough early detection and a rapid re-sponse.Pickering farmer Ron Tapscott spotted the pigs outside of his property, but he's notover concerned. He's used to losing cropseach year to regular offenders. "I lose a couple acres every year from raccoons and deer damage along fieldsthat are along a creek," he said.Fellow farmer Chris Burkholder, of Burkholder Farms, is very worried aboutthe invasive species. "These things reproduce like rabbits,"he said. The hogs have been spotted on the vastfamily farm on several occasions, some- times "fighting viciously."That it can't be controlled in the south-ern United States is worrisome for him."Every other person has a gun down there and they still can't control them," hesaid.Burkholder said he heard somebody let 30 boars loose in the area. But the origin ofthe pigs is currently unknown, said Pick-ering Animal Services supervisor LindseyNarraway. "We do know, based on the characteris-tics of how these particular pigs look, thatthey are varying ages," she said. Some appear to be young, but shedoesn't believe they were born in the wild."They've been bred and born in captiv-ity and have somehow made their way into the City of Pickering's rural areas," shesaid.A Pickering prohibited species bylawbans boars from inside city limits. Narraway said pet owners shouldn't lettheir cats outdoors and should keep theirdogs on a leash. Richardson said one of the impacts ofclimate change that often flies under theradar is that it can accelerate the introduc-tion and spread of invasive species. "Projected changes to Durham Region'sclimate, including increasing average tem- peratures, more frequent extreme weather events and lower winter snowfallamounts, can create more favourable con-ditions for the establishment and spread ofinvasive species," he said. He hopes they'll be captured soon."They can survive our winters and caneat almost anything, so they spread very quickly and establish very quickly," hesaid. STORY BEHIND THE STORY:Dur- hamregion.com has been following thisunique situation in Pickering. WILD PORKERS STILL PARADING THROUGH PICKERING Town of Ajax Supervisor of Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change Cameron Richardson has long believed wild boars could be a problem in Durham, and was not surprised to learn they have been spotted in Pickering recently. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY "You have to write about this! Other people may be scared, too, and need to hear it," my neighbour in-sisted, staring me straight in the eye. Glenn Coady, one of On-tario's top birders, had just been telling me about spot- ting razorbills, open-ocean birds, out over Lake Onta-rio, blown inland by that last big storm. And I was telling him how, for the first time in years, I might have a chance of seeing rarities like that myself, given mylife-changing clarity of vi- sion after cataract sur- gery. Even with new, top- notch glasses my sight grew dimmer and fuzzier throughout the COVID-19pandemic, to the point where I couldn't distin- guish birds right outside the window without binoc-ulars, or read street signs while driving. When the possibility ofan operation came up, I was frightened, yes — just the thought of someone sticking a sharp object inmy eye makes me recoil. But I was also hopeful. And opening repairedeyes one sunny morning earlier this month I found a miracle had happened. I could see. Everything.Clearly. Every leaf still clinging to our bur oak, our mulber- ry. The white eyebrow stripe on a nuthatch that came to the feeder. Golden-eyes and mergansers out on the lake. We drove to the farm in Haliburton for firewood the next day, taking advan- tage of the glorious late fallweather, one good thing about global warming. I kept up an excited ac- count of all the birds I spot-ted — wild turkeys, blue jays, ring-billed gulls, geese. And every crow and ra- ven, able to tell them apart because I could suddenly see their tails, their shape, their beaks. I couldn't help my hus- band with the work, havingbeen cautioned not to lift heavy objects for a week or more, so I hiked out to the sugar bush, a golden land-scape of fallen leaves I could identify with just a glance — maple, ironwood, basswood, birch. And mushrooms! In- cluding a rash of tiny puff- balls I wouldn't have no-ticed at all presurgery. That night the universe co-operated and gave me my dearest wish — cloud- less skies and glittering stars from horizon to hori- zon. After years of seeing on- ly the brightest ones, on the darkest nights, I feast- ed on a banquet of constel-lations. There was my old friend Leo, the backward ques-tion mark. The Pleiades as seven pinpricks of light in- stead of a dim smudge. I went out again pre-dawn to find the whole stel- lar map had swung around the North Star, just as it's supposed to do, and the Big Dipper spilling starlight down its handle. KEEP PUBLIC WASHROOMS OPEN ALL YEAR To the editor: With more people get-ting active and enjoyingthe outdoors I'm sure the trails and parks will bebusier than usual this win-ter. I live in Whitby but I hope all the towns/citieswill keep the washroom fa-cilities open all year. It is frustrating, espe-cially as a dog walker, thatthere is nowhere to "go"and having to cut a walk short. Alternatively, onlybeing able to walk a limiteddistance from home. H. P. GIBSON,WHITBY PROVINCE MUST MAKE DEAL WITH EYE DOCTORS To the editor:It is long past the time for the Ford government tocome to the table with a se-rious proposal to settle thedispute it is involved in concerning fair compensa-tion for optometrist servic- es for the young and for se-niors. My wife and I are both seniors who require neweye glass prescriptions butare unable to get visiontests. With a provincial elec-tion in the offing it is hardto believe that Doug Ford can withstand the loss ofseniors' votes. Please reacha settlement now so I cansee properly again.DOUG LAMB,OSHAWA COUNCIL SHOULD 'SQUEEZE THE DOLLAR TILL IT SQUEAKS' To the editor:Whitby Town council isreviewing a proposed 3.5per cent tax increase. Reminds me of the Elton John commercial wherebyhe says "I'm skint." In En-glish, he has no money. I have a couple of cost saving suggestions: 1. The town wishes to create a $4 million depart-ment to receive taxpayer complaints: we have plentyof staff right now, howabout just working harder or, heaven forbid, put in alittle extra overtime, atstraight pay of course; 2. Bylaw services, every time I call them, they justshake their heads, "can'thelp you on this matter," or when they show up, it'sthree days later. All inci-dents should happen be-tween 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Of course they only work 8 to4; and, 3. The town shouldprepare for tough times ahead: costs are going up.Council should squeeze thedollar till it squeaks and says "no more, no more."RICHARD FOSTER,WHITBY SIGN UP FOR OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER AT DURHAMREGION.COM 9 | Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , N o v e m b e r 2 5 , 2 0 2 1 dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m New s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , N o v e m b e r 2 5 , 2 0 2 1 | 10 Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover Thank You for Doing Your Part! The new facility will be located next to the Durham York Energy Centre (DYEC) in Clarington with operations planned for 2024. The MWP component of the facility will remove materials—such as organics, metals, and non- combustibles—from garbage collected at the curb and from multi-residential buildings. This will not replace or eliminate the current Green Bin or Blue Box programs. Instead, the MWP will sort out organics and recyclables from the garbage bags that should have gone into the green bin or blue box. This will be particularly beneficial for residents of multi-residential buildings who currently do not have access to the Green Bin program. AD is a natural process that uses microbes found in the environment to break down waste in the absence of oxygen. This process naturally produces methane, which will be collected and cleaned for use as renewable natural gas (RNG); essentially converting organic materials, such as food scraps, into an energy source. There are many environmental benefits with a new Mixed Waste Pre-sort and Anaerobic Digestion Facility: More renewable energy The new facility is anticipated to generate approximately 4 million cubic metres of valuable renewable natural gas by capturing methane that would otherwise be released into the environment. Greenhouse gas reduction The renewable natural gas generated has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 7,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent by the year 2025. This is the most significant reduction of GHG from the short-term initiatives currently proposed by the Region. Attraction of low-carbon industries The new facility will create a local opportunity within the Energy Park and Clarington to attract future clean- energy and low-carbon innovative industries. More diversion By sending Durham’s garbage to the new facility first, to remove items that should not be in the garbage, less garbage will be sent to the DYEC. This will increase diversion rates and defer the need to expand the DYEC. Watch our video at durham.ca/ADProject to see how the Mixed Waste Pre-sort and Anaerobic Digestion Facility will work with Durham’s waste management program. The decision by the provinceto build a toll-free Bradford by-pass while leaving Durham roadstolled has us "left in the lurch," said a local MPP.A recent announcement byPremier Doug Ford that the pro- vincial government will fund a $1-billion-plus four-lane bypass be-tween Hwy. 400 and Hwy. 404 andthen provide toll-free driving on it, is "very frustrating for Dur-ham drivers," said Oshawa MPPJennifer French. "It's been an interesting roadto travel with this government,"said French."It seems like, at the drop of a hat, they reversed course on thetolling decision (on the Bradfordbypass). We've got the current and former ministers of financein Durham ridings (Peter Beth-lenfalvy and Rod Phillips) andyou would think the government would be more responsive to re-moving tolls on Hwy. 412 and Hwy418," French said."We are left in the lurch, stuckin traffic and spinning ourwheels," she said.Former PC MPP, Lindsey Park, now an Independent MPPrepresenting Durham riding, said: "I hope the provincial gov-ernment continues to review the tolls on highways 412 and 418, par-ticularly in light of the approachto tolling taken in other regions of the province. Durham Regiontaxpayers should be treated fair-ly." Whitby Mayor Don Mitchell, who for years has demanded thetolls be removed from Hwy. 412 and 418 in the interest of fairnessto Durham drivers, was re-strained in his comments on theissue. "I would hope that the decisionto build the Bradford bypass as atoll-free road would be an oppor- tunity to review the appropriate-ness of tolls on 412 and 418. In a statement on Mon-day, Nov. 15, the OshawaMPP Jennifer French saiddespite urges from her par- ty, Premier Doug Ford'sministers brushed offquestions on the issue and refused to make any com-mitments."The Ford Conserva-tives are refusing to listen to the people of Durhamwho are calling for the pro-tection of CarruthersCreek Headwaters,"French said. Ontario NDP leader An-drea Horwath has commit- ted to adding CarruthersCreek's Headwaters to theGreenbelt if she's elected in2022. "Carruthers Creekneeds to be protected and added to the Greenbelt,"said Ontario Green Party leader Mike Schreiner onTuesday, Nov. 16.Development could hap- pen on the land if Lake-ridge Health chooses Pick-ering, which has proposeda location on the headwa- ters, as the host municipal-ity for its next Durham hos-pital. Pickering, Whitby and Oshawa have all sub-mitted proposals.Ajax is downstreamfrom the Carruthers Creek Headwaters, and Frenchsaid despite the dangerousflooding threat, the previ-ous Liberal government chose to exclude the Car-ruthers Creek Headwatersfrom the Greenbelt. "In 2018, Rod Phillipspromised to change that —but even during his tenureas minister of environment from 2018 to 2019, he didn'tdo it," she said. Phillips addressed the matter recently, stating ina social media post "I wantto share on Facebook, what I've been saying at thedoors: I support the idea ofputting the CarruthersCreek Headwaters into the Greenbelt."French said the headwa-ters need to be protectednow. "Doug Ford should com-mit to adding the Carruth-ers Creek Headwaters to the Greenbelt today,"French said. The Mississaugas ofScugog Island First Na- tions has also denouncedthe proposal by Pickering. Anyone who hasn't beenensconced in their homefor the past decade knows that the situation has dras-tically deteriorated. In 2010, the averagehome in Durham cost $299,448. At today's interestrates and a five per centminimum down payment, afamily would pay roughly$1,300 per month in mort-gage payments. But in 2020, that average price had risen to $706,913.With a minimum downpayment, the monthlymortgage costs on that average home are $3,100.And that number will besignificantly higher by the end of the year. Year-to-date, the aver-age home price in Durhamis $896,837 with Septem- ber's average price hittingarecord at $988,354 whichwould mean monthly pay- ments of more than $4,300with a minimum downpayment on the home. Those estimates don't include other essentialhousing costs for familieslike mortgage insurance, property taxes, condo feesand utility costs.Imagine two homes inthe same subdivision with nearly identical layoutsand built in the same year. One family bought theirhome a decade ago at rela- tively affordable rates.Their neighbours — per-haps a younger family or more recent immigrants toCanada — are paying threetimes as much becausethey moved in this fall. And as home prices sky-rocket, so does the price ofrentals. It's nearly impossi- ble to find an apartmentrental for a family of fourin the region for less than$1,800 per month. It's no coincidence thatas housing prices have ris-en, so has homelessness in Durham. Research showsthat when rental costs aremore than 30 per cent of in-come, homelessness be- gins to increase rapidly. So whose job is it to fixthe problem? Politicians talk aboutsolutions coming from alllevels of government. The ideas are out there: higher interest rates, lim-its of foreign ownership, taxes on people who ownmultiple properties, zon- ing changes allowing formore density and multi-generational living, re- duced red tape increasingthe speed of the develop-ment process and more.Premier Doug Ford re- cently proposed a housingaffordability task force, in-dicating that the issue is becoming big enough towarrant at least some po-litical lip service. At the local level, it'shard to imagine politiciansare willing to seriously tackle housing affordabili-ty when density proposalslike infill townhouse pro-jects or the construction of even luxury multi-unitapartment buildings candraw large angry crowds to council meetings.Existing homeownerswill complain about traf-fic, property values and the potential for crime. Doit anywhere else but theirneighbourhood, they say.And that's for projects requiring minor zoningchanges or already al-lowed under current zon- ing rules.A scenario where localpoliticians advocate for theend of single-family zoning —which covers the largeswathes of Durham — al-lowing for modest multi- unit buildings in anyneighbourhood seems al-most unfathomable. The political reality is existing homeowners voteand an angry group op-posed to development can swing a council seat withjust a couple hundredvotes at the municipal lev-el. Existing homeownersdon't want to hear thattheir municipal councilloris fighting to decrease thevalue of their home.Make no mistake, hous-ing affordability will be an issue in both the provincialand municipal electionsslated for 2022.Expect local, provincial and federal leaders to lookgrave and concerned whenthey discuss the issue on the campaign trail. And to promptly put iton the back burner whenpolls close. And we told them what we knew. You’re going to see natural won- ders and beautiful views. But none of us knew what to expect. That this town was much more than just a waterfall. Niagara Falls is a world lead- er in every part of a family vaca- tion, and on a scale you wouldn’t expect. Fallsview Casino Resort shared the finest views of the falls as well as high quality restaurants such as Ponte Vecchio, and the soon to be opened Golden Lotus. The kids need something to do? The flu is a lung infection that is typically associatedwith cough, high fever, headaches and muscle pain. Some people may recover from flu symptoms after afew days, but for many — in-cluding the frail olderadults, the very young andpeople with chronic condi-tions — the flu can lead toserious illness and even death. Last year, we experi- enced lower than usual casecounts of the flu. The uptake of the flu vaccine, combinedwith other public healthpractices, such as hand-washing, wearing a mask and physical distancing, helped to keep the virus atbay. This year, with people re-suming some indoor activi-ties, gatherings and events, there are more opportuni- ties to pass along influenza,COVID-19 and other respi- ratory viruses. If you are ex-posed to influenza, the fluvaccine is your best defence to prevent the flu and the as-sociated doctor visits andhospitalizations. The flu shot is required annuallybecause the virus changesfrequently. The flu vaccine is safe to be given at the same time as,or at any time before or af-ter, the administration of other vaccines, includingthe COVID-19 vaccine, based on guidance fromCanada's National Adviso- ry Committee on Immuni-zation. And it is safe andrecommended for individu-als aged six months or older, including people who arepregnant or nursing. Receiving the flu shot is free and easy. Pop into yournearest pharmacy or flu vaccine clinic, or book anappointment with your pri-mary health-care provider. Since flu and COVID-19present somewhat similar-ly, if you develop respirato- ry symptoms, regardless ofyour vaccine status for bothviruses, book a COVID-19assessment test and self-iso- late to prevent furtherspread. If you are at risk of com- plications from the flu orCOVID-19 and developsymptoms, it is best to speakwith your primary-care provider or visit an urgent-care centre or walk-in clin-ic. Shouldhomeowners and buyers beconcerned? In fact, thestudy ranked Toronto as thesecond riskiest housingbubble in the world. Let's take a look. When reading bank re-ports pandering "doom andgloom," I find that local trends tell a more accuratestory than a bank in a differ- ent country. Who knows amarket better than some-one with "boots on theground" in Durham Region. Let's look at what SwissBank UBS is sharing, com-paring the real estate mar-ket locally to other cities in the world. UBS creates what they call the "Global Real Estate Bubble Index." This index isdefined as an annual reportthat puts the real estate housing market into long-term perspective and tracksthe risk of property pricebubbles in global cities. In simple terms, they attemptto predict the chances of val-ues collapsing in towns. The new report lists thetop cities most at risk forvalues to collapse. They are:1) Frankfurt; 2) Toronto; and 3) Hong Kong. If we dig abit deeper and look at thehistory of the UBS report,we will find that they haven't been all that accu-rate. Here are their predic- tions for the Toronto area alongside the average salesprices to show how inaccu-rate a bank and their pre- dictions can be. Average sales prices forall homes in the Greater To-ronto Area. Year UBS World Rank-ing of chance of collapse Average sales prices2018 Toronto #3 $787,3002019 Toronto #2 $819,400 2020 Toronto #3 $930,000Aug. 2021 Toronto #2 $1,070,000 OK, let's agree that thetrack record of predicting a collapse is zero. What these stories do to anyone who isinvested in real estate is thatthey sew the seeds of uncer- tainty, and in any financialmarket, uncertainty causespeople to hold off and sitback waiting to see if the predictions of doom willmaterialize. And then there are thosewho make their decisions to invest, be it in the stock mar-ket, or in real estate, basedon a belief that their objec- tives are long term. I haveworked through two marketdownturns, one in 1990 andone more recently in the spring of 2017. Let's focus onthe 2017 downturn; a buyer purchasing at the peak of the market (May 2017) andreviewing how their invest-ment is today? A purchaser buying inMay 2017 would have paid,on average, $653,000 in Dur-ham. By July, that same home was selling for$570,000! That is a decreaseof $83,000. Sounds bad if you had to sell three months af-ter buying, however, asmentioned above, investingis a long-term goal. Last month that home would sellfor $918,000, a gain of$265,000. I am not dismissing allpredictions, heck I havebeen known to make some. But when we see dire, doom- -and-gloom forecasts, takethem with a grain of salt. The best information is inthe hands of local experts. ROWE, Almeta Albertine (Terrelonge) Dates - October 8, 1936 - October 28, 2021 ___________ It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Almeta Albertine (Terrelonge) Rowe, 85, affectionately known as "Candy" and "Mommy Rowe." Many remember her as a loving mother and an angelic soprano whose voice carried church choirs since childhood. Born to Benjamin and May Altica (Nelson) Terrelonge, Almeta arrived on October 8, 1936, and grew up in the village of Pleasant Spring in St. Andrew Parish in Jamaica. She was one of 19 children. It was in England in 1961, while pursuing her studies as a neonatal nurse, Almeta met Derrick. The sweethearts quickly fell in love, got married in 1963, and began a union that would last until Almeta's death, 58 years later. Almeta and Derrick left England for Canada in 1968. Once there, Almeta began building a legacy through nursing, first at Western Hospital, then Scarborough General Hospital and, finally, North York Branson Hospital. A devout Seventh-day Adventist Christian, Almeta was involved in ministry and was admired by youth for her impeccable dressing and her practiced "Speaky-Spokey" British twang. Above all, Almeta had a heart for worship. So, hearing her raise a "Hallelujah" from her seat in the congregation was a sweet melody to every ear. A founding member of Toronto East Seventh-day Adventist Church, Almeta served as a deaconess, songstress and Sabbath School teacher for decades. Then, in the mid- 2000s, she joined Kanisa Fellowship and served as a church mother until her final days. As she takes her rest, Almeta will forever be held in the hearts of her family, including her husband, Derrick, her children, Adolph, Ann, Heather and Renee, her grandchildren, Shane, Kaja, Kehla, Kiara, her remaining siblings, Aleithia, Doreth, May Claire, and her many neighbourhood and church adoptees. On November 12, 2021, memorial services were held at Revivaltime Tabernacle with interment at Highland Memory Gardens. In memory of Almeta, donations can be made to ADRA Canada via www.almetarowe.ca Call or Visit our show room now to order for Spring Installations. Appointments preferred.
