In a statement issuedNov. 3, Lakeridge said that95 per cent of those affectedby the vaccine mandate are now fully inoculated, whileanother two per cent had obtained one dose of vac-cine by the Oct. 22 deadline. Lakeridge Health has made the COVID-19 vacci-nation mandatory for allteam members, including staff, physicians, vendors, volunteers, contract work-ers and students, spokes-person Sharon Navarro said in the Nov. 3 update.Lakeridge did not pro-vide specific numbers for those who are fully or par-tially vaccinated or unvac-cinated, and the informa-tion released does not pro- vide a breakdown of whatrole those who remain un-vaccinated have within theorganization. In announcing the man-date in early October, Lake-ridge said the measure was implemented to provide"the safest possible environ-ment" for patients, familiesand employees. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY Every fall it happens:that rush of anticipation and delight the day we fill up the feeders for the first time. How long will it takefor our neighbourhood birds to notice, and who will be first to arrive? Chickadee? Cardinal? Nut- hatch? I'm always surprised at how quickly they come andhow soon they settle in, busily flying over to grab a sunflower seed or hanging on the wire mesh and chomping away, shelling one seed after another, de- pending on the species' eat-ing habits. This year it was business as usual by late af- ternoon, with mourning doves and white-throatedsparrows and grey squir- rels already parked under- neath, picking up fallenscraps, as if we hadn't stopped feeding last May. With summer warmth lingering on through Octo-ber, we were late setting up this year. Plus, the Nestle- ton-area farmers we oftenbuy birdseed from, our friends Karen and Dennis Yellowlees, hadn't yet har- vested their vast sunflowerfield — what must be a bumper crop given the good rains since July. I say "we," but it's my husband who gets out the ladder and does all the work, and he told me blue jays showedup as soon as he'd filled both feeders and started hanging suet for the wood- peckers. And then a chick- adee landed on his head. I'm so touched when I see this summer's fledg-lings — paler replicas of their parents — trying to figure out how to extract seeds from various open-ings. A young downy wood- pecker flew back and forth several times, followinghis dad, before finally man- aging to get at the suet. Suc- cess at last! They work hard for a liv-ing, these birds that share our yards and neighbour- hoods and keep us compa-ny throughout the long winter. One good way to "give back" is to take part in Project FeederWatchand contribute to the grow- ing knowledge being gath- ered by scientists con- cerned about the dwin- dling populations of so many species. Submitting periodic reports on "yourbirds" adds to the critical database. You don't even need to have a feeder, since birds come to water, ber- ries, flower seeds and ever- green cones, or just shelter in trees in your yard.Project FeederWatch runs from Nov. 13 to April 30, 2022, a valuable citizen- science effort to help ex-perts keep tabs on how avi- an species are doing throughout North Ameri-ca. Birds Canada, partner- ing with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, provides help to beginning birders, re-sources for identifying spe- cies and a mobile app to make reporting simple and quick. Make a donation of any amount to help fund the re- search, then start coun-ting! Contact birdscana- da.org/feederwatch or phone 1-888-448-2473 for more information. And aboutbloody time, too.On trips I took to Ux- bridge last year and thisyear, this program hasbeen in place there forsome time. Long overdue, but awelcome salute to the brave men and women inthe services and to theBomb Girls for everythingthey did contributing to our freedom today. And come Remem-brance Day, if you can read this, thank a teacher.Because it's in English, thank a soldier.JOE HOVORKA,AJAX HEALTHCARE ALSO FOR ANTI-VAXXERS To the editor:Re: "Anti-vaxxers 'play-ing Russian roulette': Cla-rington reader."The letter to the COVIDanti-vaxxers states: "Are you willing to pay for yourown hospital fees if/whenyou become ill with the vi-rus," has me wondering if she understands that bydefinition universal healthcare means for all.Hence, you either like the universality of our health-care system or you don`t. There is no doubt that the unvaccinated placethemselves at higher riskof needing hospital care, just as those that play com- petitive sports such ashockey and football.Do we deny to them our health-care benefits aswell? To those narrow-mind-ed individuals that want to restrict our healthcare tosome, be careful what youask for as you may findyourself in a similar cir- cumstance some day.PS: I`’ve had my two vac-cine shots and hope every- one does the same.STEVEN CLIFT,WHITBY SIGN UP FOR OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER AT DURHAMREGION.COM 7 | Pic k e r i n g N e w s A d v e r t i s e r | P | T h u r s d a y , N o v e m b e r 1 1 , 2 0 2 1 dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m @cityofpickering Weekly Community Page November 11 Customer Care Centre 905.683.7575 (24 hour line) customercare@pickering.capickering.ca COVID-19CityResponse GetthelatestinformationonCityservices, closures, businesssupports, communityresources, andmore atpickering.ca/covid19. for older adults in Pickering. The City of Pickering ismourning the loss of Ward 2 city councillor Ian Cum-ming. News of the council-lor's death was released onTuesday, Nov. 2. Cumming was diagnosed with termi-nal liver cancer in 2017 butthe cause of his death has not been released. In 2019 he spoke to Dur-hameregion.com aboutbeating the disease but the cancer later returned.Since first being electedto city council in 2014, Cum-ming has served on a num-ber of committees, includ-ing the Elexicon board of di-rectors, the Pickering Pub- lic Library board, thetaxicab advisory committeeand the animal services ap-peal committee. The city said in a pressrelease that while he was astrong community advo- cate for his ward and thewaterfront community,Cumming was equally pas-sionate about Pickering's evolution from a bedroomcommunity to a sustainablecity. As a renowned animallover, Cumming could oftenbe seen out in the communi-ty walking his beloved dogs. Appropriately, he was cho-sen by his colleagues oncouncil to lead the fundrais- ing efforts for Pickering'sfirst permanent animalshelter. "I am very sad at the passing of councillor Cum-ming," said Ward 3 regionalcouncillor David Pickles. "He was a colleague andfriend."He said they frequentlyspoke, sometimes over a coffee at an outdoor café."He cared greatly for thecommunity and gave great consideration of matters forcouncil's consideration. Hewas one of the good ones, and I will miss him," Pickles said. The late councillorhad a wife named AmyLathrop, two sons and five grandchildren.Mayor Dave Ryan saidCumming was a "damngood councillor. He was hard working, very, verycommitted to his communi-ty. He was well liked, cer- tainly well liked by staff. Heworked very well withthem. He was outspoken. Certainly had his own mindand didn't mind expressing it, quite forcefully at times."Ryan noted Cumming'shealth took a turn for theworse about three weeks ago. As for filling the seat, council will have to makethat decision, Ryan said. "We haven't even startedto discuss that yet, but we'llbe making that decisionover the next week or so, I assume," Ryan said."It's a loss, it's a loss tocouncil and it's a loss to thecommunity and certainly to his family, his wife Amy,two sons and grandchil-dren. We're all feeling it. We're going to miss him,"Ryan added. All flags at city facilitieshave been lowered to recog- nize Cumming's passing.Books of condolence will beset up in the lobbies of city hall, central library, bothlocated at One The Espla-nade, and the Chestnut HillDevelopments Recreation Complex at 1867 ValleyFarm Rd. An online memo-rial page has been set up on the Let's Talk Pickeringsite, where residents andthe community are invitedto share their thoughts, ex- pressions, and condolences. But the call hetook in 1986 was unique: al- legations of horrific abuseperpetrated against youngboys trapped in a religious cult in Pickering. The subsequent investi-gation had a life-long im-pact on Carter. Now re- tired, he's written a book,in collaboration with an-other retired cop, about theextraordinary case.In My Mother's Hometells the harrowing story ofchildren caught up in a bi- zarre world of religiousdogma, exorcisms andabuse, and a cop's fight tobring the perpetrator of the crimes to justice."It has always stuckwith me," Carter said. "I al- ways thought, this is like amovie made for TV — Ican't believe this."Carter said the initial call about the incidentcame in 1986. He was told ateenager had made revela- tions to Children's Aidworkers that merited po-lice attention. Carter was unprepared for what the 19-year-oldwould tell him. During aninterview the young man related his experiences at astone farmhouse on BrockRoad, where a woman act-ed as head of an extreme Christian cult. Ongoingabuse against children wasafact of life at the house. He told cops he'd escaped, but had concerns for a 10-year-old boy still under thewoman's control (Carter has changed the names ofthose involved in the sto-ry).The young man related details about feverish reli-gious rites, including exor-cisms, and ritualistic phys- ical abuse of children,Carter recalled."A couple of times dur- ing the interview I thought,Is this really true?" he said. But the young man wasaconvincing witness. Atone point during the inter-view, the teen showed po- lice evidence of the abusehe'd suffered, including ex-tensive scarring. "He took off his shirt,"Carter said. "We countednine slash wounds — un-treated lacerations." The interview left thecop reeling. "I left and Iwalked outside and I said to the (CAS) worker:'Where do I start fromhere?' " Carter conducted inter-views with cult members, and police executed asearch warrant at the Pick-ering farm house, seizingweapons and "tons of liter- ature." He also interviewedthe 10-yer-old child, a pro-cess he says he'll never for- get."He was born andbrought up from a youngage in this type of environ- ment," Carter said. "All theabuse he suffered was nor-mal to him." Cult members told po-lice the cult leader exertedaremarkable level of con- trol over them."I would ask them, How did you get involved?" Cart-er said. "All of the people Iinterview said the samething. They wanted more in their lives."Child victims includedthe cult leader's own sons, who lived under a reign ofreligion-tinged terror:"She told her sons thatwhenever she spoke, she was the word of God," hesaid.Despite the sensational nature of the case, therewas not much media cover-age when the cult leader went to trial. She was even-tually convicted of crimes including assault and wassentenced to four monthsin jail. The book, said Carter, is the result of a case thathaunted him well after theend of his career. He said he learned during his re-search for the book that the10-year-old victim he'd in-terviewed had died in 2019, in his 40s. "The life he lived — itwas just horrendous," Carter said.Carter was assisted byBrian Ward, another re- tired Toronto cop who hasauthored several books, in- cluding texts and works offiction. Ward said he's beenstruck by the way the casehas resonated with Carter. "It's one of the thingsthat haunted Dave for hiswhole career," he said. "It's a unique story."In My Mother's Home isavailable on Amazon as apaperback or Kindle down- load.Portions of the proceedsfrom the sale of the book will be donated to the Dur-ham Children's Aid Foun-dation. I think, in this particular campaign, be-cause we've all beentouched by cancer. One in two individuals being diag-nosed with cancer in theirlifetime. A lot of people aretouched by cancer. "We all have a vested in-terest with this disease andthe impact it can have on family," she said.Soania noted both hermother and mother-in-lawhave to deal with cancer and both have been treatedat Lakeridge Health. The campaign kickedoff in October and fromNov. 1 to Dec. 31, the cam-paign cabinet will matchevery donation dollar-for- dollar.Soania said the cam-paign cabinet is matchingdonations because "we've all sort of been infected insome way by cancer in gen-eral and we also believe in the community and thecommunity support of lo-cal hospitals. It's a trau-matic situation for patients to be treated any way forcancer and if they can betreated close to home is part of this."Arun wants to let thecommunity know thatmedical professionals, like surgeons and oncologists, know cancer cases areabout to rise significantly. "We are expecting to seean explosion of cancercases in the next two years as a direct result of the pan-demic. The need for ad- vanced, state-of-the-art di-agnostic and treatmenttools is critical for address-ing cancer in the communi- ty," he said.Opened in 2007, the cen-tre, which is part of Lake- ridge Health, treats about18,000 people a year, savingpeople from having to trav-el into Toronto or other lo- cations for help. With the $20 million, $1.6million will be spent on di- agnostic and medical imag-ing, $2.8 on treatment andtechnology, $4.1 on surgicaloncology, $5.2 million on research and innovation,$1.3 million on laboratoryand pathology, and $5 mil- lion to support innovationsand cancer treatments inthe future. Arun noted the impor-tance of having cutting- edge technology to treatpatients."In all aspects of medi-cine, equipment and tech- nology have been a hugedriving force in accelerat-ing treatments. You don't have to go very far. Look atCOVID. We went from thefirst sniffles in January2020, to having the first clinical trials for the vac-cine by June. That meansfinding the virus, examin- ing the genome, mappingthe genome and creatingthe vaccine," he said"This same concept defi- nitely, or more so, appliesto cancer. We don't have theluxury of 200 years to de-velop any new technolo-gies. We have to acceleratethe process and that accel- eration does require tech-nology," Arun added.Arun began practisingat Lakeridge Health in 1997 and that predated the can-cer centre. At the time, hehad to send all his cancer patients into Toronto fortreatment."That was a pretty goodhaul. If you're 60, 65, 70, 75, not having a lot of drivingexperience in the big city, you had to go in five days aweek for six weeks of radia-tion treatment, strugglingto find support from sonsor daughters to drive you in. That was pretty diffi-cult."Arun's parents, Suratand Raj Mathur, made a $5,000 donation to the cam-paign.Surat said when he and his wife were living in NovaScotia, they donated to edu-cation causes. Not long af-ter moving to Ontario, Raj was diagnosed with cancer,so they shifted their donat-ing to the cancer centre. To learn more about thematching opportunity, vis-it www.liveheregivehere-.ca. His name was Pilot Officer Duncan Alexander Hewitt, 501 Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, a 20-year-old native of New Brunswick. Hewitt was one of 3,050 Canadians who were lost while serving during the war in the Air Force, and whose bodies were never found. There is a tree planted in his honour on the section of Highway 401, known as the Highway of Heroes, as a part of the HoH Tree Campaign. The project was successfully launched more than seven years ago in the Toronto Star, and fulfilled by volunteers wishing to honour our war dead and give the environment a lift at the same time. We are active volunteer supporters of the cam- paign, and Mark is chair. By planting 117,000 trees on the right of way of the Highway of Heroes, one for each Canadian lost at war since 1812, and more than 1.8 million more trees just off the highway, we acknowledge and remember Canadians who volunteered for military service during times of war. We are also combating the negative effects of human activity on our environment. Thanks to many generous partners and donors, we have exceeded our ini- tial goal to raise $10 million to pay for the tree planting. By Remembrance Day, Nov. 11, 2022, we anticipate that all two million trees will be in the ground. We will take what we have learned from the Highway of Heroes Tree Campaign, add the experience of our partner organization GrandTrees, and continue on to plant native trees and shrubs across the country. And in the beautiful new tradition of the HoH Tree Campaign, we will also create permanent, living acknowledgments of the great work and sacrifice made by Canadian heroes, including our mil- itary, and our front-line workers since the pandemic started in March of last year. What if we planted a tree for every doc- tor, nurse, personal care worker, paramedic, and more? Through the federal Ministry of Natural Resources and the government’s 2 Billion Trees program, we have a running start to our cam- paign: $2 million is committed by Ottawa to get our national tree-planting efforts off the ground. In addition, private donors have pledged more, and several industry professionals are willing to share costs and provide in-kind support to maxi- mize our impact. This means that every donation to Trees For Life this year will be matched and we will complete our goal of raising $4 million in support provided to tree planting projects in 2021. But we need your help to do this. We hope you agree, this is a compelling case for support for any Canadian who understands the environmental value of trees. If that is you, we urge you to visit treesforlife.ca. Soon, when we can physically connect, our part- ner organizations will be holding planting events that you can join. The Oshawa Generals came close to having a second perfectweekend in a row.A second-period slip up against the Barrie Colts Fridaynight, when the Generals seemedto have the game in hand, leftthem in scramble mode to gain a point in a 5-4 overtime loss. Theteam bounced back nicely onSunday night however, in a domi-nant 4-1 victory over the visitingSudbury Wolves.Patrick Leaver, who has hadthe net consistently for weeks now, was the goaltending storySunday, stopping all but one first-period effort."He bounced back (after the Friday loss). He's calm in that netand we're playing well in front of him," said Generals GM RogerHunt on Monday morning. The big story in Sunday'sgame was the play of the all-rook- ie line of Cal Ritchie, who wasOHL rookie-of-the-month for Oc-tober, Matthew Buckley and Eu- ropean import Kevin Niedenz.Coach Todd Miller put the triotogether for the first time thisseason and they clicked with Buckley — the team's second-round draft pick in 2021 — scoringa first-period goal on assists from his linemates. He later scored a second, onanother helper from Ritchie (whohad three assists in the game) and an assist from rookie CooperWay, who took a turn for Niedenzafter Blake Smith was tossed outfor fighting in the first (and then allowed to return later in a mys-terious reversal by the game offi-cials). Smith, by the way, threw a dev-astating right hand that knockedout fellow rookie Michael Der-bidge and appeared to do serious damage to his face, drawingblood and perhaps a broken nose. The game was delayed for severalminutes and Derbidge was taken off the ice on a stretcher, thoughconscious. The Generals got goals as wellfrom Dawson McKinney, with his second of the season, and BrettHarrison, with his sixth on the power play.On Friday, Oshawa got goalsfrom Harrison, with his fifth,Ryan Gagnier, with his sixth, and a pair from Ryan Stepien, withhis ninth and 10th.Now in fourth place in the Eastern Conference out of 10teams, Oshawa is only one pointbehind a three-way tie for firstplace between North Bay, Hamil- ton and Ottawa. But the going gets tough thiscoming weekend, when the Gen- erals will be in Kingston on Fri-day, Niagara Falls on Saturdayand then return home Sunday toface Ottawa at 6:05 p.m. at the Tribute Communities Centre. It's expected backup goalieCarter Bickle will get his firstOHL start in net during the trip. "He (Bickle) should get hisstart in there. One of ourstrengths this season has been between the pipes," said Hunt. With an assist in Sunday'sgame, captain Ty Tullio has apoint in every game this season, extending his point streak to 12games.
