OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM Where are woodpeckers when you need them? Car- penter ants are an issuewhen you live in a century- old house made of wood, like I do, and having a pair of ant-eating specialists around would be great natu- ral pest control. But unlike diminutive downies, hai-ries and red-bellieds (regu- lar residents of urban for- ests), supersized pileateds prefer extensive woodlands filled with big old aging trees. And they're our only woodpeckers equipped forgouging deep into dead- wood for carpenter ants. Since ivory-billed wood- peckers of southern cyprusswamps were hunted to ex- tinction, pileateds are tied with the black woodpeckersof Eurasia for "largest still living." Crow-sized, and sporting a crest of crimson feathers atop their black-and-white-streaked heads, they make an impressive fly-by, flashing the white un- dersides of their sweeping black wings with each un- dulating stroke. And get a good look at one poised on atree trunk, ready to wield its chisel-like bill, and you'll realize that birds really are prehistoric, descended from dinosaurs. As well as carpenter ants, pileated woodpeckersdig for wood-boring beetle larvae and termites, carv- ing rectangular craters in dying trees those insects are dismantling — all part of the forest food chain. One of the coolest features of a woodpecker is its longtongue. Rooted somewhere in an eye socket, it wraps around the skull under the skin on the way to thethroat, helping to insulate the brain from all that hammering. Backward-facing barbs at the tip help pull prey from holes for a good chow down. I didn't find out untiljust last week that our big- gest woodpeckers also eat fruits and berries. Rela- tives we were visiting in cottage country told of them teetering on branch- es right beside their deck, gorging on chokecherries. An adult brought an awk- ward fledgling along one day, obviously teaching it good things to eat besides ants. They also take acorns, and Percy and Ju-lie Beech have them com- ing to suet all winter in the Ridges near Burketon. Pileated pairs defend an extensive territory year- round, scouting out car- penter ant colonies theycan rely on all winter. Ear- ly in spring, they hollow out a nesting cavity 20 to 35 centimetres deep in a dy-ing tree — holes many oth- er birds, bats and flying squirrels can later roostand nest in. The woodpeck- ers' three to five young have a lot to learn in one short growing season, be-fore being turfed off their parents' territory some- time in fall. My husband once saw five pileated woodpeckers gathered in a stand of dead trees on the Algonquin Christmas BirdCount — perhaps a family with very tolerant parents, and lots of carpenter ants to go around. Margaret Carney is a nature-appreciation col-umnist for MetrolandDurham newspapers. PILEATED WOODPECKERS MAKE AN IMPRESSIVE FLY-BY THESE 'BIRDSREALLY AREPREHISTORIC,DESCENDED FROMDINOSAURS,' SAYSNATURE COLUMNIST PARK SHOULD BE 'A BEGINNING' NOT 'A CONCLUSION' To the editor:Re: 'Once in a career typeof park:' Oshawa's new playground at LakeviewPark is open.I have visited this new facility at Lakeview Parkand was impressed. That being said, I findthe "once in a career" atti- tude disturbing. With a growing popula-tion of young people inmany parts of Oshawa, onewould think that this facil-ity would be viewed as a be-ginning rather than a con- clusion; as a model for fu-ture facilities around thecity rather than a monu-ment to someone's career. The next one should beon the drawing board now. Let's build for the pre- sent and plan for the fu-ture. DOUG LAMB, OSHAWA BUS PROJECT WELL-INTENDED BUT ILL-CONCEIVED To the editor:A well-intended, ill-con-ceived project, deceiving presentation.I am vehemently oppos-ing the Metrolinx proposed Bus Rapid Transit linkconnecting Oshawa withScarborough — for itsdamaging impact on the Whitby historical down-town and its surroundingclosely knit neighbour-hoods, as well as for itsquestionable merits. Projected ridership inthe year 2041 cannot get me exited, neither can the Met-rolinx-estimated benefits(how they were calculated?)Outright deceptive is the Metrolinx image post-ed on the front page of theJuly 1 Whitby This Week. A panacea depicting a crowdjoyfully walking on a widesidewalk with four vehi-cles passing by. Where is the traffic? No deception was intended! It's just mag-ic. Back to reality.Presently, Oshawa is connected with Scarbor-ough along the Metrolinxcorridor with the Pulse busoperating in 10-minute in- tervals. It is a popular linkmeeting most passengers'requirements. At one of the virtualmeetings with regionalcouncillors, a participantwisely recommended turn- ing attention from the rap-id bus proposal to the localbus lines serving the Met- rolinx GO stations. Strate-gically located bus stopsand increased frequency ofthe service could serve both locally and the entireGO Train system.PAVEL ZEMAN,WHITBY SIGN UP FOR OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER AT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY MARGARET CARNEY Column 7 | Pic k e r i n g N e w s A d v e r t i s e r | P | T h u r s d a y , A u g u s t 1 9 , 2 0 2 1 dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m @cityofpickering Weekly Community Page August 19 Customer Care Centre 905.683.7575 (24 hour line) customercare@pickering.capickering.ca COVID-19CityResponse GetthelatestinformationonCityservices, closures, businesssupports, communityresources, andmore atpickering.ca/covid19. If you’re tired of fumbling around in the dark for clothes, here are three ways you can shed some light on the situation without doing any electrical work. 1. Replace the rods in your closet with illuminated LED models. If there isn’t an outlet nearby, opt for ones that are battery-operated. 2. Place small, battery- operated puck lights in strategic locations such as beneath the upper shelf. Most models include ad- hesive strips to facilitate installation. 3. Line the inside of the door frame with LED strip lights to provide an even distribution of light. Both wireless and plug-in models usually come with a switch. Finally, consider freshen- ing up the inside of your closet with a coat of pure white paint to further bright- en up the space. Two Ajax residents are among severalsuspects facing charges after an investiga- tion into the trafficking of cannabis fromOntario to the Caribbean. The investigation, conducted by the RCMP along with the Canada Border Ser-vices Agency and municipal police, result-ed in the seizure of an estimated 80 kg ofmarijuana, 5 kilos of hashish, and $40,000 in cash, police said. The new charges arise from a continua-tion of an investigation that led to the ar- rest of several suspects, including DurhamRegion residents, in early 2021, accordingto the RCMP. Project OALTO focused on analleged drug trafficking network suspect- ed of smuggling cannabis from the GTA tothe Caribbean, police said. The ongoing operation led recently tothe execution of search warrants in Ajaxand Toronto. In fact, ac- cording to Canadian Federa- tion of Independent Busi- ness, over half of business owners agree that their busi- ness model has changed or will significantly change with 45 per cent of business own- ers having to work signifi- cantly longer hours to main- tain their business. Fortunately, we can all help to support our favourite small businesses and create a positive impact in our local communities. For those wanting to show their sup- port, here are three simple tips: 1. Support a local store when stocking up on sup- plies. Instead of grabbing your bread during a weekly grocery shop, visit a local bakery to get a fresh sour- dough loaf or a few delicious pastries, which in turn will support your local economy. 2. Send a personalized message or positive review. There’s nothing like sharing a unique and thoughtful message of your positive ex- perience with a small busi- ness. Take a moment to share your experience on so- cial platforms such as Face- book or Instagram and rec- ommend them to friends and family. 3. Nominate a small busi- ness for financial funding. Many small business owners are running at full speed to meet the demands from the pandemic. They’re often so busy pivoting to new con- cepts and ways of operating that they don’t have the time to look for investments. Show support by nominating them for funding they might not know about, such as the Purolator True North Small Business Grant Contest. This can help businesses expand and boost the local econo- my. www.newscanada.com How Canadians can help local businesses succeed Paria Rad paria@durhamlawyer.ca Vanessa Romanino vanessa@durhamlawyer.ca Ashley Almeida ashley@durhamlawyer.ca Stephen Sforza stephen@durhamlawyer.ca Jonathan Dippolito jonathan@durhamlawyer.ca Jason Lane jason@durhamlawyer.ca Real Estate Law Wills & Estates Corporate and Commercial Family Law and more! 619 Brock Street South, Whitby, Ontario L1N 4L1 www.durhamlawyer.ca (905) 668-4486 info@durhamlawyer.ca Thank you for your nomination! The costs to maintain a business are rising and continue to be a challenge. With 1.2 million small busi- nesses in Canada employing 8.4 million individuals, they play a critical role in our econ- omy. Of those businesses, over half agree that their busi- ness model has changed or will significantly change due to COVID-19, according to Cana- dian Federation of Indepen- dent Business. At least 152,000 Canadian small busi- nesses have adopted e-com- merce since the start of the pandemic. For small businesses quickly expanding, consider these three tips that can help in financing: 1. Explore all available grant programs. There are many re- sources and programs avail- able to assist with the financial impacts of the pandemic. These solutions can provide the critical funding or shipping credits your business may need to try a new solution or invest in new technology to improve productivity. 2. Speak with financial ex- perts. Reach out to your bank to discuss recovery plans or flexible credit options. There might be offers or opportuni- ties to invest or find business solutions to meet your unique circumstances. 3. Take on challenges one at a time. Take every chal- lenge or opportunity as it comes and don’t get over- whelmed by the uncertainty of the pandemic. ANDERSON, John "Jack" Edward (1930 - 2021) ___________ John "Jack" Edward Anderson, 91, of Orillia, Ontario passed away peacefully at 4:20 a.m. Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Leacock Care Centre. Funeral services will be private. Mr. Anderson was born in Toronto on April 18, 1930, the son of Robert and Ladelle Anderson. On August 5, 1953 he married Muriel Florence Foster. Mr. Anderson was known as a larger-than-life figure who cared deeply about his family and his community, and always did his utmost to get a laugh out of those around him. As one of its longest serving mayors, Mr. Anderson led the City of Pickering through a period of significant economic expansion in the 1980s, before retiring to his garden in Greenwood, Ont and later Bayshore Village in Brechin, Ont. There he continued to engage in the local community, helming the Rotary Club of Orillia Train Project for many years. Mr. Anderson also served more than 40 years as an employee of the Canadian Pacific Railway, joining in the 1940s as a locomotive fireman in Smith Falls before retiring in 1986 as engineer. He was particularly proud to have been the lead engineer for the last locomotive steam engine No 2816, to run between Smith Falls and Toronto in 1956. "Running a train was a great experience, the envy of just about every kid in the country," he said in a 2003 interview. "You were in a very powerful position, your own boss in a way. The history of Canada was built on the railway -- we wouldn't have Canada if it wasn't for the rail." Mr. Anderson was elected as Councillor representing North Pickering in 1972, and served as Regional Councillor until 1976 before being acclaimed as Mayor in 1977. He served as mayor for the next 11 years, running undefeated in two subsequent elections, and retired in the seat in 1988. Survivors include three sons: Ken Anderson of Keswick, Ont., David Anderson (Maureen) of Boca Raton, Fla., and Don Anderson (Julia) of Singapore; sister Jane Anderson of Canmore, Alta.; five grandchildren, Natalie Lindell (Kurt) of Port Perry, Bradley Anderson (Tammy) of Whitby, Ont., Lyndsey Anderson of Surrey, B.C., and Jack and Michael Anderson of Singapore; and four great grandchildren. Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert (Joan), with whom he shared a similar passion for the railway and barbecues. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County https://alzheimer.ca/simcoeco unty/en/take-action/donate. Special thank you the staff at Leacock Care Centre for the loving care provided to Mr. Anderson. Arrangements entrusted to Doolittle Chapel of Carson Funeral Homes, 54 Coldwater St. E., Orillia (705) 326-3595. My life or yours? I will say mine and you will walk away not knowing that you are my life." Kahlil Gibran ___________ Mary passed away at 81 after a long battle with chronic illness. Proud and independent, she lived at home until she was hospitalized days before her death. Loving and adored Mom of Brian, Darlene and Bill (Sue), caring and dear Nana to Megan, Caroline (Mark), and Billy (Ida) and their baby Ville. Predeceased by her beloved husband Bill (2006), son Derreck (1971), and dog Mitzi (2020). Mary will be fondly remembered by family (inc- luding sisters Roberta, Joanie, Adele and Susie, and brother Doug) and many close friends. Mary earned her B.A. (York) and M.Ed. (Toronto) part-time over many years while working full-time and raising a family. After starting as a teacher, she retired in her 50's as a respected Principal with the Durham District School Board. A wise and comp- assionate matriarch, active listener, avid reader, dedicated diarist, painstaking family historian, and talented pianist, Mary cherished her family and friends. Ever resilient, she rose through difficulties throughout her life. While Mary enjoyed travelling abroad and spen- ding time at the cottage in northern Ontario, she was happiest at home breaking bread or having tea with those she loved. Visitation at McEachnie Funeral Home in Pickering on August 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. Funeral service on August 12 at 2 p.m. will be live- streamed. Only family and invited guests may attend in person. OBITUARIES | REMEMBERING THE LIVES OF THOSE IN OUR COMMUNITY A sweet little flower, nipped in the bud, no grief or sorrow knew; just came to earth to win our love and then to Heaven withdrew. No stain was on your little heart, sin had not entered there; and innocence slept sweetly on that pale white brow so fair. You were too pure for this cold earth, too beautiful to stay, and so God’s holy angel bore our darling one away. We are sad within our memory, lonely are our hearts today; for the one we loved so dearly has forever been called away. We think of you in silence, no eye may see us weep; but many silent tears are shed when others are asleep. The rolling stream of life rolls on. But still the vacant chair recalls the love, the voice, the smile of the one who once sat there. Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep, I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glint on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn’s rain. When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. 1-800-263-6480 classifieds@metroland.comCLASSIFIEDSOBITUARIES | ANNOUNCEMENTS | JOBS | MARKETPLACE dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m New s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , A u g u s t 1 9 , 2 0 2 1 | 20 STEWART, Rhea Aldea (nee Desjardins) ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Peacefully, on Saturday, August 14, 2021, in her 88th year.
