"I think for both reasonsthey're really important initiatives," she said. The problem lies where a municipality has thatrole and no other infra-structure supports."In a large municipality, it's got to be a team ap-proach as well," said Perry, who taught San Antonio at Ontario Tech.San Antonio self-identi-fies as a racialized settler—her parents moved to Canada from the Philip-pines before she was born. The issues are complexand not always obvious to the blind eye. "Was it a comment? Amicroaggression? Will they ask where you're fromjust because you look dif-ferent?" San Antonio said."Do you see yourself in po- sitions of decision-makingauthority? In leadership positions?"San Antonio said, "It'sjust a different lived expe-rience when you know you're not represented."She'll look internally atthe city's programs and policies, and consult em-ployees. The city needs todo internal capacity build-ing before the city can property reach out to thecommunity."Diversity and inclu-sion issues are not going to disappear with the cre-ation of one role," she said.It has to be embedded throughout the culture ofthe municipality, some-thing she said is not uniqueto Pickering. Other Durham munici-palities have hired diversi- ty co-ordinators in recentyears."I think there is a lot ofpositive movement for- ward," San Antonio said. The Town of Ajax hiredadiversity co-ordinator in 2015."In Durham Region,(Ajax is) considered one ofthe leaders in the field. They've had really strongpeople there, a reallystrong team," Perry said.Natasha Sharma, the town's diversity and inclu-sion co-ordinator, is re-sponsible for applying a di- versity and inclusion lenson everything within thecorporation, from pro-grams to policies to com- munication. "When people think of diversity, they think onlyof race, but diversity andinclusion is representativeof different facets," she said. These include ancestry, sexual orientation, litera- cy and socioeconomic sta-tus.Sharma said the townlaunched the role when it recognized barriers thatwere faced by marginal-ized community members, since Ajax is one of the most racialized communi-ties in Durham. There wasaneed to create more posi- tive spaces and program-ing, and to celebrate thatdiversity.Perry and a colleague helped Oshawa build its in-clusion and diversity plan, launched in 2017. The Re-gion of Durham also hiredaco-ordinator this year.Perry said the libraries in Oshawa and Ajax areproviding educational op-portunities through publicforums, panels and work-shops. She recently partic-ipated in a panel on anti-Asian violence in the con- text of COVID-19 throughthe Ajax Public Library.Clarington hosted an anti-Black racism conversation in March. STORY BEHIND THE STORY: As more munici-palities are hiring diversi-ty and inclusion co-ordina-tors, Durhamregion.com wanted to let readers knowwhat the role is all about. She indicated the lack of affordable housing is a con-cern across Durham."It's very, very critical that we get this as soon aspossible," she said. The project, being devel-oped by Medallion Develop- ments and located at 100 Bay-ly St., will include a 23-storeyand 19-storey residential building, and will provideAjax with 551 new units ofrental housing. It's locatedclose to public transit, schools and services."Every Canadian de-serves a safe and affordable place to call home," Hussensaid. "That is why our gov-ernment is taking action to increase the supply of rentalhousing through projects like the one we are announc-ing today in Ajax. This newrental housing will provide families better access tojobs, services and the ameni-ties they need. This is the Na-tional Housing Strategy at work." This project is the secondphase of a three-phase mas- ter plan development knownas the Vision at Pat BaylySquare. The feds previouslyprovided a $60-million loan for the first phase of thismaster plan, to help build308 new rental units."By providing financing for new rental housingbuilds like we have for theVision at Pat Bayly Square, our government is taking ac-tion to not only increase thesupply of new rental devel-opments, but to also provide housing options that arecloser to jobs, services andamenities for middle class families right here in Ajax, the surrounding regions andacross Canada," Hollandsaid. "This is a transforma- tional investment in our lo-cal community, and is des-perately needed." The project receivedfunding through CMHC'sRental Construction Financ-ing initiative (RCFi), a na- tional housing strategy pro-gram that supports rentalhousing construction pro- jects to encourage a stablesupply of rental housing formiddle class families in ex- pensive housing markets.CMHC sets out certain re-quirements under the RCFIwhich the proponent must comply with. At the time ofoccupancy, the project's ini-tial residential rents must beat least 10 per cent below the project's gross achievablerents. At least 20 per cent ofunits must have rents set at less than 30 per cent of medi-an household income. Rentsfor the project will be main-tained for a minimum of 16 years.Rents for the currentunits at Pat Bayly Square are $1,725 for a one-bedroomunit and $1,825 for two bed-rooms."On behalf of Ajax Coun- cil, I would like to thank ourfederal partners for theirsupport in increasing the supply of rental housing indowntown Ajax at the Visionat Pat Bayly Square develop-ment," said Mayor Shaun Collier. "The second phase ofthe development will pro-vide much needed housingoptions for residents neartransit, local businesses, ser-vices and amenities." OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY Switch off the lights! Turn off the TV tonight and rush outdoors to the darkest corner you can find, hope- fully far from the urbanglow. We're right at the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, the most spectacular fire- works display on Earth, the best reason to stay up till dawn. Last year the showwas washed out by moon- light, but this year it's the dark of the moon. And when that thin crescent sinks inthe west tonight, around 10:30 p.m., we'll be left in ide- al darkness — and hopefullycloud-free. "Shooting stars" happen all year round, but lots are visible from mid-July to lateAugust as Earth passes through the debris trail left from Comet Swift-Tuttle'selliptical orbit around the sun. Right around Aug. 12 they climax, with some 50 to 75 an hour flashing throughthe night. They seem to radi- ate from the constellation Perseus in the northeast sky, just behind the big "W" of Cassiopeia, but you might see one in any part of the sky. So lie back in your lawnchair, let your eyes adjust to the darkness and enjoy the show, which promises to be most spectacular from mid- night to dawn, as Earth plows head-on into thestream of comet dust. Travelling 11 to 72 kilo- metres per second, bits of itcreate friction when strik- ing air molecules in our up- per atmosphere, the mesoth- ermic layer, and generategreat heat, up to 1,649C. Ion- ized particles peel off in a glorious "tail" of photons.Whatever is left after flam- ing across the heavens falls to Earth as a tiny microme- teorite — some 5,200 metrictons of which settle to earth yearly, according to scien- tists studying cosmic dust particles in the pristine ice of Antarctica. Isn't that amazing? Just as amazing is thatthey're finding micromete- orites everywhere, even on flat roofs in urban areas, and apparently anyone can do so, with a magnet, patience and permission. Good ad- vice can be found in Jon Lar-sen's book "On the Trail of Stardust: The Guide to Find- ing Micrometeorites." Even if you miss the peakof the Perseid shower to- night, it's worth going out stargazing on any clearnight in August, just to see our home galaxy, the Milky Way, flung out across the night sky. The Summer Tri-angle and Cygnus the Swan are in full glory, and Jupiter is up there all night long, its four largest moons and great red spot on view via telescope or binoculars. Our giant gas neighbour comesclosest to Earth on Aug. 19 and will appear just above the moon on the 21st. Worth a photo or two? THE SHOW IS IN THE SKY TONIGHT: DURHAM COLUMNIST MARGARET CARNEY URGES READERS TO CHECK OUT THE PERSEID METEOR SHOWER RAPID BUS PROJECT 'WELL-INTENDED, ILL-CONCEIVED' A well-intended, ill-con- ceived project, deceivingpresentation.I am vehemently oppos- ing the Metrolinx proposedBus Rapid Transit linkconnecting Oshawa withScarborough - for its dam- aging impact on the Whit-by historical downtownand its surrounding close- ly-knit neighbourhoods, aswell as for its questionablemerits. Projected ridership in the year 2041 cannot get meexited, neither can the Met-rolinx-estimated benefits (how they were calculat-ed?).Outright deceptive is theMetrolinx image posted on the front page of the July 1Whitby this Week. A pana-cea depicting a crowd joyful-ly walking on a wide side-walk with four vehiclespassing by. Where is the traffic? No deception was in-tended! It's just magic. Back to reality. Present-ly, Oshawa is connectedwith Scarborough along the Metrolinx corridor with thePulse bus operating in 10-minute intervals. It is a pop-ular link meeting most pas- sengers' requirements. At one of the virtualmeetings with regional councillors, a participantwisely recommended turn-ing attention from the rap-id bus proposal to the local bus lines serving the Met-rolinx GO stations. Strate-gically located bus stopsand increased frequency ofthe service could serveboth locally and the entireGO Train system.PAVEL ZEMANWHITBY 'THE COURT REDUCED HIS SENTENCE?' Re: "Appeal court reduc-es sentence for youth in- volved in violent robberies, police chase." He beat an older personover the head with a pellet gun, causing him enoughdamage to have staples inhis head to close the wounds, during a jewelrystore robbery. With three accomplicesalongside him (in another robbery), he held a gun to awoman's head while de-manding she open a safe. And the court reducedhis sentence? If you haven't heard of gellyball, you're not alone.Durham resident SteveMaguire recently launched the first business in Onta-rio to offer the game — it'sone of only a handful inCanada. Gellyball is similar topaintball and airsoft butless messy and less painful, making it possible foryounger kids to get in onthe action. Players use battery- powered blasters to launchtiny, soft gel balls."The thing about some-thing like paintball, it's not very kid-friendly. It's great, but it's very messy and itcan hurt," says Maguire, owner of ThunderstruckGellyball Extravaganza.Maguire has been in-volved with paintball for more than 30 years, includ-ing playing international-ly, writing for Paintball Media Magazine and run-ning his own paintball pod- cast. When he learned aboutgellyball, he immediatelysaw its potential as a gamethat could incorporate thesame fun and action aspaintball, but be accessible to people of all ages. Thunderstruck Gelly-ball Extravaganza offersmobile games for birthday parties and other events.Gear includes blasters thatshoot gellyballs at a rate of about 15 per second and gi-ant inflatable bunkers, which can be set up inbackyards or other out- door spaces. In addition to being softand squishy, the balls don't leave a mess behind whenthe game is done, Maguire says. After about 12 hours, they shrink down and disin-tegrate.Are you opening a new business in Durham? Tellus about it! To celebrate the new Ro-tary Park boardwalk, thetown has released a newaerial tour video to show- case the project. In partnership with theToronto and Region Con-servation Authority andfunded exclusively by theFederal Gas Tax fund, the$1.6-million project fea- tures a new raised board-walk elevated above the re-gional flood level, whichwill help re-establish the beach, enhance naturalhabitats for wildlife andimprove accessibility for all users exploring the Wil-liam A. In addition, the trailleading to the boardwalk has been re-aligned to im-prove wayfinding and bet-ter direct trail users away from the Rotary Park play-ground."Investments that helpprotect the environment and provide more spacesfor people to safely get out-doors are essential," said Ajax MP Mark Holland."The upgrades to the exist-ing Duffins Creek bridge near Rotary Park to en- hance the surrounding en-vironment will help makeAjax greener and sustainour waterfront for future generations to enjoy."As a Great Lakes com-munity, the Town of Ajax continues to invest in in-frastructure projects thatallow residents and visi-tors to experience its breathtaking landscapeswhile protecting sensitivenatural areas. OBITUARIES We are sad within our memory, lonely are our hearts today; for the one we loved so dearly has forever been called away. We think of you in silence, no eye may see us weep; but many silent tears are shed when others are asleep. A sweet little flower, nipped in the bud, no grief or sorrow knew; just came to earth to win our love and then to Heaven withdrew. No stain was on your little heart, sin had not entered there; and innocence slept sweetly on that pale white brow so fair. The rolling stream of life rolls on. But still the vacant chair recalls the love, the voice, the smile of the one who once sat there. 1-800-263-6480 classifieds@metroland.comCLASSIFIEDSOBITUARIES | ANNOUNCEMENTS | JOBS | MARKETPLACE 17 | Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , A u g u s t 1 2 , 2 0 2 1 dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m SANDERSON MONUMENT COMPANY LIMITED Servicing ALL cemeteries including Arbor, Mount Pleasant Group and Catholic cemeteries. 8 locations to serve you from North Bay to Lake Ontario.
