Orchard Villa was one of thelong-term care homes where theCanadian Armed Forces wascalled in to help respond after an outbreak. In a scathing report onthe homes, the armed forces de-scribed horrendous conditions at Orchard Villa including cock- roaches and flies, residents chok-ing from improper feeding andpatients left in soiled diapers. At the protest, families who lost loved ones pleaded with theprovincial government to reject a FAMILIES RALLY AGAINST ORCHARD VILLA LICENSE RENEWAL See ‘NO’,page 8 REKA SZEKELY rszekely@durhamregion.com Mary Anne Flynn held a photo of her mother, Jean O'Neill, as families of Orchard Villa residents held a protest to show their opposition to a request by the home's owner, Southbridge Care Homes, to have its licence extended for 30 years. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM Leaves shaking in the mulberry tree near our sun room are a sure sign that berries are ripening. Squirrels crawl way out on the branches, often hanging upside down as they grab all the fruit they can reach, ready or not. Robins, waxwings, cardi- nals and catbirds go forones farther out, often flut- tering in space to pluck them. None of them seem to care if the berries are plump and purple or still red, or even hard and green. By the time they'refully ripe there's just enough left on the lowest limbs for a mouthful or two for me. Yum! I remember picking mulberries from a bounti-ful tree behind my rooming house in Toronto while in university, and having bowlfuls for breakfast, with cream. And mulberry trees so laden with fruit in my hometown that they'd stain sidewalks purple. Where were all the hungry squirrels and catbirds then? Mulberries were al- ready on my radar when Jody Cormier phoned to talk about a feast of them he and a buddy enjoyed, from a bumper crop on a tree behind the OshawaCentre. And then the dire consequences resulting. Growing up in Nova Sco- tia, Jody learned from his mom to harvest wild foods, like fiddleheads and ap- ples, and still does here in Durham Region. He washungry the day they went for those mulberries, and devoured many, thinking the red ones mixed inwould just make the fla- vour more tart. Jody learned the hard way thateverything about mulber- ries, apart from fully rip- ened fruit, is toxic to hu- mans, causing all kinds ofgastric distress. He wanted me to warn other readers to be careful. Ontario's native red mulberry trees grow in Carolinian forests south- west of the GTA, most ofwhich were cleared for ag- riculture long ago, leaving the species endangered. White mulberry, host plant for larvae of the mulberry silkworm moth, was intro- duced to North Americafrom Asia by folks wanting to produce silk fabric from the moth cocoons, as the Chinese have so success- fully done for thousands of years. With their seeds spread by wildlife, whitemulberries have become part of the urban land- scape, along with other in- vasives like Norway ma-ple, and tree of heaven. I didn't know that when I planted mine 10 years ago,a sapling dug up from a friend's yard in Oshawa. Now four metres tall, and providing entertainmentall summer as birds come and go, it's a prize garden feature. But I'm going to eat just the blackest berries, and carefully remove the tiny stems. A MULBERRY FEAST IN OSHAWA - AND A WARNING MARGARET CARNEYNOTES THAT ONLYMULBERRIES FULLYRIPENED ARE SAFEFOR HUMANS TO EAT 'REMOVE THE PRESSURE' OF ONLINE LEARNING To the editor:Any provincial an-nouncement regarding on-going online learning mustbe coupled with a messageof understanding toward children and parents.Something along the linesof — it's OK if your childcannot make it to class ev- ery single time, on time, and stay there giving theirfull attention. It's OK if they need a break. It's OK ifyou have to work to providefor them so you cannotmake sure they are doing all of their work. Parents receive phonecalls from the board when their children are late orabsent from online class asthey have been directed by the provincial governmentto do so. We already knowour kids aren't doing it alland we can't do anything about that because we aretrying to make money tofeed them (and the econo- my!). We can't do anythingmore. We will read to themat bedtime and talk money when we order the grocer-ies, but we cannot sit therewith them all day. The gov- ernment has done nothingto reduce class sizes in thisonline environment, andteachers and kids are struggling. We need a plan that pro-vides peace of mind byshowing steps are beingtaken to ensure there willbe investments made inour children's education over the next however many years to make surethat they can catch backup. A plan to close any gapsthat have been created. Currently, the messageis that kids are to be onlinelearning, status quo with the normal school year. Weare not living in a status-quo time period. I see my kids struggling, and I know how I need tosupport them, but I cannotdo that even to my own ex- pectations with all of thepressure that currently ex-ists. Please remove the pres- sure, make the plan, andsay yes to future resources. And please, do not make anannouncement withouthaving this message in-cluded. The price to buy a home or condo in Toronto and thecommunities surroundingit has climbed significantlythrough the first six months of 2021, but thattrend is nothing new. According to the most- recent Greater Toronto Ar-ea (GTA) market-trackingdata from the Toronto Re-gional Real Estate Board (TRREB) for June, homeand condo prices remainednear record highs in termsof average price. The average sale pricefor all types of dwellingstracked by TRREB across all GTA markets combinedcame in at $1,075,636 lastmonth. In June 2020, thataverage sat at $891,167, re- presenting a 20.7 per centincrease in just 12 months. While prices have in- creased substantially in re-cent years, affordabilityhas been a concern muchlonger than that. In 2011, GTA homes and condossold for a combined annualaverage sale price of $465,412. TRREB tracks monthlysales data for three areas ofToronto and 30 other mar- kets surrounding Canada'slargest city, including Peel,York, Halton and Durham regions, as well as parts ofSimcoe and Dufferin coun-ties. The graph above showshow average real estate prices have risen in each re-gion between 2011 and 2021year-to-date as of June. Thetable at the end of the arti- cle shows a breakdown ofthe price increase in com-munities in each region. Perhaps surprisingly tosome, Toronto was not theGTA's most expensive mar-ket by a long shot, nor was it the market that saw thegreatest percentage in-crease over the past decade. York Region holds the ti-tle as the GTA's most expen-sive region, with an aver-age sale price for all home types sitting at $1,241,833 inJune, followed closely byHalton Region, with a March 2021 average of$1,222,263.However, Durham Re- gion has seen the mostgrowth in terms of percent- age increase over the pastdecade with real estate inthat area climbing 183.8 percent since 2011. Toronto, on the other hand, has seenprices grow at the slowestpace over that period at 109.5 per cent. The GTA's three largestcities — Toronto, Missis-sauga and Brampton — have remained middle ofthe pack in terms of com-bined average home and condo prices since 2011. Beverly was a member of Pickering Pentecostal Church and was very active in her community. Born in Jamaica on October 8, 1953, Beverly immigrated to England in 1961, then to Canada in 1975 where she worked as a journalist and freelance writer in the Durham region. Many people in the Greater Toronto Area (specifically Durham region), throughout Canada and overseas will fondly remember Beverly for her missionary work in Mfuwe, Zambia where she and her husband Milton set up buildings and micro enterprise projects, teaching community members how to run their own small businesses. She was one of the founding members of the Congress of Black Women (Oshawa Chapter) and was actively involved with them for over seven years. She loved to write and was a journalist for the Oshawa Whitby This Week newspaper, writing her own Special Features column, highlighting notable celebrities from the Durham region. Over the years, she also contributed editorial pieces to The Toronto Star, Pride and Share magazines. Beverly spent two years developing a course that taught people how to acquire affordable land from Governments. She wrote and published a book on the subject in 2013. Beverly passed peacefully at the age of 67 surrounded by immediate family. She will lovingly be remembered by Milton Browne, her husband of 27 years. She will be sadly missed by her children; Melanie, Joel and Charlene, along with her son in law, Lee. She was a cherished Grandmother to Patrick, London and Cicilee. Beverly was a loving sister to Leighton (predeceased) & Carlton Edwards, cousin to Icelyn McIntyre and "Auntie Bubbly" to many extended family members. Beverly took pride in helping others and encouraging their personal growth - spiritually, financially and emotionally. Beverly's memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her. The family will receive friends for visitation and service by reservation only. Please call the funeral home to reserve your attendance for visitation and service at 905-443-3376. Yvonne was tireless in her efforts to advocate for seniors to better care and rights up to the time of her passing. Yvonne was always quick to smile, offer a joke, time to listen, a shoulder to cry on or a beer to celebrate. Yvonne did not see people as strangers. Unknown people quickly became friends and often lifelong friends. Yvonne leaves this world having amassed huge numbers of family and friends and she will be missed terribly by all who knew her. No stain was on your little heart, sin had not entered there; and innocence slept sweetly on that pale white brow so fair. You were too pure for this cold earth, too beautiful to stay, and so God’s holy angel bore our darling one away. Pleasant in manner, patient in pain, our loss is your eternal gain. Your cheery ways and smiling face, are a pleasure to recall; you had a kindly word for each, and died beloved by all.
