Vegetation on railway right-of-way, if left uncontrolled, can contribute to trackside fires and impair proper inspection of track infrastructure. The spray program is not being done for aesthetic reasons. For safe railway operations, CN will conduct its annual spray program on its rail lines in the province of Ontario. A certified professional will be applying herbicides on and around the railway tracks (primarily along the 16 feet graveled area/ballast). All product requirements for setbacks in the vicinity of dwellings, aquatic environments and municipal water supplies will be met. CN may use the following herbicides and active ingredients: VP480 (Dow), Esplanade (Bayer), Overdrive (BASF), Detail (BASF), Arsenal (BASF), Navius (Bayer), Gateway (Corteva), VisionMax (Bayer) using Glyphosate (480g/L or 540g/L), Indaziflam (200 g/L), Diflufenzopyr (20%), Dicamba (50%), Saflufenacil (29.74%), imazapyr isopropylamine (26.7%), Metsulfuron-methyl (12.6%), Aminocyclopyrachlor (39.5%), Paraffinic Oil (586 g/L), Alkoxylated alcohol non-ionic surfactants (242 g/L) CN only uses herbicides that have been approved for use in Canada and in the Province within which they are applied. The program is expected to take place from June to October 2021. Visit www.cn.ca/vegetation to see the list of cities as well as the updated schedule. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY High-pitched, wild andfree. Iconic as any loon laughter. I remember one moonlit night many years ago when the yodelling cryof an eastern whip-poor- will perched right above my tent jerked me from a sound sleep, then went on for what seemed like hours. Ever since then, whether camping in a pinewoods or oak savannah, or driving through forests on the Oak Ridges Moraine at dusk or dawn, I catch my breath in delight when I hear a whip-poor-will call- ing. These crepuscular nightjars lay their eggs right on the ground in open woods, where their grey-brown plumage blends per- fectly with the leaf litter, and they sit so still you al-most step on one before it flushes. That's why they're heard much more often than seen. It was specifical-ly to hear them hollering that my husband and I got up at 4 a.m. and headed forthe hills one calm morning last week, near the full of the moon. Whip-poor-will pairsusually produce two eggs, timed so their young hatch 10 days before a full moon. In the growing light, night after night, the adults hunt insects, the only thing whip-poor-wills eat, snap-ping them up in their huge mouths and regurgitating them into the gaping beaks of their babies. Dennis and I were in luck with our quest. After driving slowly along back roads, windows down and ears straining, we finallycaught a far-off laughing call, and jumped out of the car to hear better. The distant voice wassoon joined by a closer one, obviously much louder — dueling males maintainingbreeding territories. There was enough dawn light by then for me to see Dennis's grin.Another reason for smiling, besides collecting fitting data for this CanadaDay column, was hearing the nasally beeps of com- mon nighthawks flying about over the tree canopy, interspersed with the booming sounds of display- ing males pulling out of a dive. The same size as whip- poor-wills but with longer, pointier wings barred withwhite near the tips, these similar-looking nightjars prefer more open country, and are often seen high in the sky at dusk or dawn, and sometimes even by day. Though not by us thatmorning. But I felt a warm, happy glow as we climbed back in the car and puttered on, en-joying the chorus as song- birds woke up one by one. Chipping sparrows, oven-birds, great crested fly- catchers. Scarlet tanagers, eastern wood-peewees, eastern towhees. And thethrushes! Raspy-voiced ve- eries, magnificently me- lodic wood thrushes, and perhaps most lovely of all, the haunting notes of a her- mit thrush. Nature queries: mcar-ney@interlinks.net or 905- 725-2116. Durham nature writerMargaret Carney has morethan 4,500 species on her life list of birds, many seenin far-flung corners of ourbeautiful planet. NO MISTAKING A WHIP-POOR-WILL'S CALL: WHITBY COLUMNIST MARGARET CARNEY, HUSBAND DENNIS GOT UP EARLY ONE DAY 'TO HEAR THEM HOLLERING' MARGARET CARNEY Column Rarely seen, but often heard, nature columnist Margaret Carney says the eastern whip-poor-will is camouflaged to blend in with the leaf litter as it lays its eggs on the ground. Mike McEvoy photo HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT NAME CHANGE AN EXAMPLE OF PC WORLD To the editor: Re: Help Whitby base-ball rebrand from 'hurtful'name. After reading about theWhitby Minor Baseball As-sociation's (WMBA) plansto eliminate their team name, "Chiefs," I found outit came about from an On-tario Baseball Association (OBA) mandate, whichstates that any name thatcan be misconstrued to behurtful or demeaning must be changed regardless thatit may wipe out a genera-tion of history. As a member of theWMBA board when wechose this name, I believedthen, as I do now, that the name represents the high-est level of leadership. Thisis basically the definition in the dictionary and someof the examples supplied are Police Chief, Fire Chief, and the Chief of a Tribe orclan. I do not understand which of the examplescould be seen as offensive.I sincerely believe thatno one on the WMBA, OBA or the Eastern OntarioBaseball Association couldgive a real-life experience to support this statementof Chiefs being offensive. It is more about peoplelooking for ways to relieve guilty feelings they havebeen conditioned to feelover a long period regard-ing Indigenous peoples. When I was in the WMBA,there was a Fire Chief and aNative Indian of Canada (that was the descriptionhe used to identify himself)in the association, and nev-er did I hear a single con- cern about the name Chiefs from them or anyone elseover the past 30 years. My guess is that this de-cision is a rush to be"woke," and to be able to demonstrate they havefeelings and can show thatthey have actually donesomething correct in this politically correct world. Itfollows to have a new namechosen in a contest, more or less critique-free.Finally, it would seemappropriate to remove theword Chiefs from any con- nection to baseball at thelocal or provincial level, asit appears the highest levelof leadership has already left the room.DAVID IMESON,WHITBY SCAN THE CODEfor local lettersand columns. "I don'tthink they should have a li-cence anymore. Theyshould have it removed." She plans to participatein a teleconference publicmeeting on July 15,thoughts she shared on Twitter. "Thisfalls directly on the gov- ernment."A representative fromthe Ministry of Long-Term Care said in an email that- licences are only extendedif operators meet severalcriteria. This includes a public consultation. Candace Chartier,Southbridge's chief se-niors' advocate and strate-gic partnerships officer, works with health-carepartners across the sectorto implement solutions that enhance quality carefor seniors. She said in anemail that over the pastyear, changes have been made at Orchard Villa, which include establish-ing a satellite office at thehome. Southbridge is now directly responsible for theoversight of front-line careand services under a new management model."The home has alsohired a dedicated HR re-cruiter, and Orchard Villa also now has a full-time se- nior manager of talent andculture on-site, who sup-ports onboarding, mentor-ship, creative program- ming and community out-reach efforts for staff," shesaid. Southbridge has hiredtwo epidemiologists tosupport its homes."We are also in the pro- cess of redeveloping Or-chard Villa, and the newhome will be built in accor-dance with the standards set out in the Ontario gov-ernment's Long-TermCare Home Design Manu- al," Chartier said.Pam Crosby, presidentof the Orchard Villa Fami-ly Council, feels lessons have been learned as a re- sult of the first wave of CO-VID-19 at Orchard Villa."It is my opinion thatOrchard Villa is taking this knowledge, which is con-tinually reviewed and up-dated, to make informed decisions in order to drivetheir infection controlpractices in the Home ... toensure the safety of staff and residents," she said inan email.Pickering Mayor DaveRyan wrote a letter to Rod Phillips, the new ministerof long-term care (LTC),regarding the expansion and licence-renewal re-quest."Moving forward, I ac-knowledge the critical need for more LTC beds in Pickering and Durham Re-gion," he said. "However, that need can only be ad-dressed with the full confi- dence that the health, safe-ty, and well-being of theresidents will be taken intoaccount. As such, in its re-view of the 30-year licenceapplication, the ministrymust be absolutely confi- dent that the owners andoperators of Orchard Villahave overhauled and re-prioritized its model of care." STORY BEHIND THE STORY: As the populationages, the government willbe fielding more and morelicense extension and ex- pansion requests. Mian Shakeel photos A popular waterfrontpark that was destroyed from high water levels andintense storms will be re-built, and the City of Pick-ering is seeking the public's feedback on the plans.Beachfront Park is locat-ed at the south end of Liver- pool Road, and extendsfrom the Frenchman's Bayharbour entrance on the west, over to Alex RobersonPark on the east. It's made up of a barrier beach thatseparates Lake Ontariofrom Frenchman's Bay and the Hydro Marsh. The park was signifi-cantly damaged from thehigh water levels and in- tense storms in 2017 and2019. The boardwalk inBeachfront Park, which formed part of the Water-front Trail, was damagedbeyond repair and was re- moved by City staff in thespring of 2020. The City is also antici-pating significant popula-tion growth and wants to prepare for the increasednumber of waterfront parkvisitors within the foresee-able future. The city hired consul-tants in 2019 to complete thefirst phase in the Beach- front Park Rehabilitationand Needs AssessmentStudy. Several design op- tions have been prepared inconsultation with city and Toronto and Region Con-servation Area staff. Theproposed design options address the environmentalconditions, existing and possible future park pro-gramming and servicing expectations and considerinclusive and barrier-freedesign principles.Public review of the two initial design options andsubsequent final design op-tion will take place during the summer months. Theplan is to have a report ready for council in the fallwith construction to begin as early as 2023. The first public meetingcan be viewed onwww.Pickering.ca, as well as a link to the current sur-vey — open until Monday,July 5 — and more informa- tion on how to provide feed-back. Beloved by her husband Mike, Barb was loved by all who knew her. Always happy and upbeat, she was there to help everyone in any way she could. She was everybody's caregiver. Barb loved baking, and we all looked forward to her Christmas goodies and birth- day treats. She had a great sense of humour, and was known for her jokes and pranks. She was strong willed and always stood up for what she believed in. Her love of Mickey Mouse was well known, and she had quite a collection of Mickey items. Barb is survived by her husband Mike Henton, sisters Maureen (Bud), Kathy (Dave), Charlene; brothers-in-law Larry (Marg), Darcy (Debbie), and Gerry (predeceased by Mike's sister Joanne), as well as nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her mother and father Joyce and Jack Taggart, her sister Colleen (Dave), her mother and father- in-law Esther and Frank Henton. Barb has gone to live with the angels, and is no doubt wearing a favourite Mickey T- shirt. A memorial for Barb will be held at a later date. As per Barb's wishes, instead of flowers or cards, please make a donation to a charity of your choice in her name. Arrangements entrusted to OSHAWA FUNERAL HOME, 847 King Street West (905-721 -1234).
