Erika Campbell and her husband were on their wayto the hospital to delivertheir third child when the baby entered the worldsooner than expected. On May 10, on the drivefrom Whitby to the hospital and with husband TroyCampbell vlogging the ride,Erika noticed her contrac-tions were coming fast andfurious. They put a call intoErika's midwife, whoplanned to meet them at the hospital for the delivery. But the baby made itclear there would be no tra-ditional hospital delivery this time around.Erika felt the baby was ready to come out and toldher husband."You gotta push?" saidTroy. "What do you mean you gotta push?" "I'm tryingto hold it in," Erika said.Another call to the mid- wife that this baby wasn'twaiting had the couple pullover to the side of the roadon Hwy. 407 near Brock Road in Pickering."If the baby's coming, you've got to pull over andcall 911," said the midwife. The midwife stayed onthe one phone while Troyran to the passenger's side to deliver the child, with theaid of the 911 dispatcher."I can see the baby'shead," Troy exclaimed." The baby's head is out."It was followed by a des- perate, "Tell me what to do please."Before Troy could evenget the blanket he was told to collect, the baby was outand on mom's chest. The baby didn't cry im-mediately but after a matter of seconds the cry came, toErika and Troy's obviousrelief. Two hours later, theyposted an update from thesafety of the hospital. "I think I'm slowly com- ing out of shock a little bit. Alittle bit. Because I just de-livered a baby on the side of the highway," Troy said."Well, I delivered the ba-by," corrected Erika, with asmile. "He caught it." The 407 ETR Twitter ac-count has posted a congratsto the family."We're celebrating the amazing birth of baby NovaCampbell who came intothe world on the side of Highway 407 ETR by givingher parents a year of freetravel and a gift certificateto offset the cost of car seats for her and her siblings!" itsaid. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY "Our Latest Visitor," subject line of a recent email, snagged my atten- tion.Relatives who moved up to the far reaches of Hali- burton County last fallhave been sending photos of all kinds of wildlife com- ing to their bird feeders, not to mention wanderingthrough their forested property high on a hill overlooking a lake. Ruffed grouse, barred owls, wild turkeys and daz- zling winter finches made surprisingly regular sight-ings, interspersed with special ones of a fisher, a martin, and even an east- ern wolf. I love reading their reports. This one was equally in- triguing. The first photo showed a black bear stretched up on its hind legs pawing for a feeder atop a sturdy pole.Caught in the act! The second depicted it tightrope-walking alongthe wooden railing of their deck toward the dining room window, as if plan- ning to wind in the clothes-line holding a hanging feeder. Our excited phone callfilled in all the details, of the young male bruin, hale and healthy looking, scarf- ing up fallen sunflowerseeds in both locations and then wandering off, hardly disturbed by the noisy banging of pots and pans. Hungry after a long win- ter's hibernation, and onto a good thing, he must havebeen making the rounds, for the next day we re- ceived another email, with a link to a TV news report from a Barrie station. Cot- tagers one lake over hadfilmed the acrobatic bear balancing on tiptoes on their own deck railing and reaching into space to grabtheir feeder. The couple interviewed said they thought they'dhung it high enough to elude any mammalian visi- tors, but "Mischief" obvi- ously had special skills. These intelligent animals are good at problem solv- ing, and their sense ofsmell is amazing, an esti- mated seven times sharper than a bloodhound's and 2,000 times sharper thanours. Spring can be starva- tion time for black bears, especially young ones that haven't yet established ter- ritories of their own. While they prefer meat, fish andinsects, most of their diet consists of plant food — sprouts, shoots and tree cambium before berries and fruits ripen in sum- mer. We'd sometimes findteeth marks where hungry bears had bitten into sap lines in the sugar bush when we used to make ma-ple syrup. They'd even chew holes in gas cans. As more and more hu-mans invade black bears' native forests, "people food" automatically comes on their menu, at garbagedumps, campgrounds and cottages. Those handy, dan- gling containers stuffed with fat-filled, protein-rich sunflower seeds must be an irresistible treat. Nature queries: mcar-ney@interlinks.net or 905- 725-2116. Durham nature writerMargaret Carney has morethan 4,500 species on her life list of birds, many seenin far-flung corners of ourbeautiful planet. BLACK BEARS HUNGRY AT THIS TIME OF YEAR MARGARET CARNEY Column Just over three years ago, a black bear was spotted in Port Perry, causing quite a stir. The Ministry of Natural Resources, with help from Durham police and the Scugog Fire department, caught up with the bruin. It was tranquilized, captured and later relocated to the Bancroft area. Columnist Margaret Carney notes bears are hungry at this time of year. Metroland file photo WHAT'S ALL THE FUSS ABOUT? CLINICS MUST BE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL To the editor: When Ontario openedvaccination slots for resi-dents over 40, I jumped at the opportunity.Once I arrived at the ap-pointment, I had difficultywith navigating the space. I was told I needed to fol-low the signs to the phar-macy. I quietly explained that Ineeded more details be-cause I wasn't able to seethe signage, and saying "over there" isn't helpful tosomeone with sight loss. Then the fun came with the aisles. Many were closed offdue to the pandemic re-strictions regarding non- essential items. It was not a clear routeto get to the pharmacy andI went the wrong way be-cause I couldn't read thesignage. Again, never to bedaunted, I was determined to get where I was going. I apologized to the shopperwho told me I was going the wrong way and course cor-rected. My partner was there, but I navigate spaces on myown unless I give her the "Igive up" signal (a triple tapof the cane on the floor). Once we arrived at thepharmacy, the experiencechanged. The team was welcom-ing and well organized. The staff reviewed thepaperwork and helped me fill out additional forms be-cause the print was toosmall. When I received the con- firmation form and thedate for my second dose, the team struggled with how to give me the forms. They just placed them on the counter and said, "hereyou go." Again, I took the oppor-tunity to educate. I ex-plained that I needed to know what to pick up, andwhere, with specific direc-tions (e.g., 'it's on the count-er directly in front of you'). I'm not going to just reachout and touch unnecessarysurfaces, especially during the pandemic. The team apologizedand provided very clear in-structions. Then, we navigated ourway out of the maze.Every situation is differ-ent, but I hope my experi- ence helps ensure vaccina-tion clinics are more acces-sible across Canada.WAYNE HENSHALL,BROOKLIN SIGN UP FOR OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER AT DURHAMREGION.COM 7 | Pic k e r i n g N e w s A d v e r t i s e r | P | T h u r s d a y , M a y 2 7 , 2 0 2 1 dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m @cityofpickering Weekly Community Page May 27 Customer Care Centre 905.683.7575 (24 hour line) customercare@pickering.capickering.ca COVID-19CityResponse GetthelatestinformationonCityservices, closures, businesssupports, communityresources, andmoreat pickering.ca/covid19. Educators had tomove to teach online, stu-dents had to attend class on line, and every businessthat could in every sectorthat could, increased their e-commerce business, orinitiated e-commerce tosurvive," she said.Lenbrook relies on good, secure broadband for busi- ness transactions with na-tional and international customers, suppliers, fi-nancial institutions andservice providers, as well ascommunications with its employees and commercialpartners. "Many of our local em- ployees live in north andeast Durham where thereare gaps in broadband in-frastructure and limited service providers (primari- ly above Highway 7, butpockets even along the 401corridor)," she said. Pickering is pursuing abroadband implementationstrategy to help plan for the development of infrastruc-ture required to provide af-fordable and accessible in-ternet throughout Picker- ing.Council approved a DigOnce standard in 2016, meaning any future cityroad construction will in-clude an additional conduitto accommodate fibre optic cable (internet). An official plan amend-ment passed in 2018 meansinformation and communi- cations technology consid-erations are part of the de-velopmental approval by council, which is in additionto traffic, environmental, and other studies normallyrequired to support new re- al estate projects. "It's very unfortunate,"said Kyle Bentley, Picker-ing's director of city devel-opment and chief building official. The home, currentlyuninhabited, is located atAltona and Kingston roads and was recently added tothe Municipal HeritageRegister. The formerly cheeryyellow home is now cov-ered in plastic sheetingand was moved to another location on the property. The property owner, who could not be reached for comment, has violatedthe Ontario Building Codeand the Ontario HeritageAct. "We directed they ceaseall work and to apply for abuilding permit for any new construction they'reproposing to do," Bentleysaid. The register listing means the property ownermust provide written no-tice of their intention to re-move or demolish the building."That gives council 60days' notice to take action or not to take action onthat," Bentley said.Although council wasmade aware that the build- er did have an intention totear down the home beforeit voted to list it in March, the builder never appliedfor a demolition permit, until the day after the or- der was served. Councilnow has to decide if it's abuilding worth saving. Bentley said the ownerhas taken steps to correctthe situation and while the order has been posted, theowner hasn't beencharged."We haven't taken any further enforcement ac-tion at this time but we'retaking one step at a time and leaving all optionsopen at the moment," hesaid.Branch Architecture was retained to investigatethe home's significance in2019 and, according to a staff report, the two-storeybuilding at the time wasclad in horizontal pre-painted aluminum siding, had a gable roof, a stonefoundation and multipleone-storey additions to therear. "It's a rare altered exam-ple of a mid 19th-centuryGeorgian house in Picker- ing," Bentley said. Its association with theRouge Hill communitygives it contextual value, and it is likely one of veryfew remaining buildings ofits time, said the March staff report. The buildingis associated with earlyPickering landowner and military doctor WilliamHolmes."I'm glad that we can charge (the owner) underthe building code but I'mfurious this person did this and I'm furious with how itwas left," said Ward 1 citycouncillor Maurice Bren-ner. "That's a slap in the face for heritage in thiscity."Brenner said the house is located in a prominentarea, a gateway into Pick-ering from Toronto."As long as I'm going to be on this council... I willdo everything I can tomake sure that property will not see the light of dayfor intensification," hesaid. "It will have to stay agateway representing some heritage."Brenner said actionslike this give other build-ers a bad name, and it sets a bad precedent."If others see that he cando it... then they begin to see it as a cost of doingbusiness," Brenner said.Pickering has beenmaking an effort to list oth- er heritage homes in re-cent years, including theaddition of Liverpool John's, formerly the OldLiverpool House, to theheritage registry in 2020. "I understand the restrictions. But thegovernment needs to set up something spe-cific to the hospitality sector, instead oflumping us in with all the other business- es," says owner Shawn Parkinson. The Thirsty Jester opened in October2020 in the middle of the pandemic — as a new restaurant it doesn't qualify for mostgovernment subsidies because there is nosales information from last year to submit. Parkinson also questions the logic of some of the re-opening plan details, includ-ing the fact that outdoor gatherings of upto 10 people will be allowed in Stage 1, but only four people can dine outdoors togeth-er at a table in that stage.Julie Eves, who owns The Bulldog Puband Grill in Oshawa, says the reopening ti- meline for restaurants is "not reasonable"and echoes calls for the province to domore to support restaurants that have lostinventory and revenue through the roller coaster of closing and re-opening."We as-sumed that we would be able to open the patio June 2 only to have it pushed backonce again. Experts have said that beingoutside is safe. So why can't we open patios now? Restaurants have not been the prob-lem this whole time yet we are the onesthat have suffered the most," Eves says. "And with indoor dining not opening until at least August is just going to hurt more.Especially restaurants that have no pa-tio."At 12welve Bistro in downtown Whit- by, owner John Allen says the provinceshould allow a full return to outdoor din-ing, as well as a 50 per cent capacity returnto indoor dining. "Half of the country's restaurants facethe risk of closure and by not allowingthem to return to at least limited outdoor dining right now further increases the riskof them having no choice but to give up andclose their business for good," Allen says."The government needs to trust restau- rants like they trust retail stores. Our cus-tomers are not picking things up and put-ting them back on shelves. They are notpassing one another all the time in aisles" ONTARIO RE-OPENING PLAN NOT WHAT DURHAM RESTAURANTS WERE HOPING TO HEAR JILLIAN FOLLERT jfollert@durhamregion.com John Allen, owner of 12welve Bistro Tapwerks, says the province to allow restaurants to have full outdoor dining and 50 per cent capacity indoor dining. Workers were able to get down from theroof safely and the small amount of staff in-side of the building were able to get outwithout harm. Fowlds said the workers hadbeen using a grinder to cut some metal inthe area of origin.Engineers will enter city hall to assess the building and determine what repairsneed to be made and whether it is structur-ally sound. Since city hall services are cur-rently being conducted virtually or by tele- phone, they will not be impacted. PICKERING CITY HALL ROOF CATCHES FIRE KRISTEN CALIS KCalis@durhamregion.com NEWS A fire that started in the attic of a busi-ness on Notion Road in Pickering was brought under control by fire crews quicklyon Wednesday. The fire happened at C&RPaving, 1976 Notion Rd. on May 19 just be-fore 1 p.m. The building also has a couple of residential dwellings adjacent to the office. The fire was above the office and shop area. When crews arrived, smoke could be seen coming from the roof, says Deputy FireChief Steve Boyd. "Crews eventually got onthe roof and put a couple holes in the roofand we managed to extinguish the fire from that location," Boyd noted. Chief John Haggsaid the fire is under investigation, but add-ed, "It doesn't appear to be suspicious."There was one person home at the time and a passerby knocked on the door andsaid they saw smoke on the roof. There were no injuries reported, al- though one firefighter was seen by para-medics for heat issues, Hagg said.Pickering FIre had four crews on site,Boyd noted. "We had all of our crews at one point committed to it with Ajax on standby,"he said. The cause hasn't yet been deter-mined and damage is estimated at between $75,000 and $80,000. Boyd said the fire is a re-minder for everyone to have working smokealarms in the homes or businesses. On May 17, trustees ap-proved a motion fromWhitby Trustee Niki Lund-quist to strike committeesto consider renaming JuliePayette P.S. in Whitby andSir John A MacDonald P.S. in Pickering.Lundquist says con-cerns about the schoolnames have been raised by staff and parents, includ-ing a petition with more than 1,100 signatures call-ing for Julie Payette P.S. tobe renamed Leslie McFar- lane P.S.The school's name hasbeen a hot topic sincePayette resigned as gover- nor general amid work-place harassment allega- tions. As for Sir John A. Mac-Donald P.S., Lundquist says the school name is in-compatible with theboard's equity commit-ments. "This is something thatshould have been done some time ago," Lundquistsaid in an interview. "It's avery challenging thing to recognize the need fortruth and reconciliationwhile having a school named after a historic fig-ure who has caused irrepa-rable harm and multi-gen-erational harm to a group of students who are withinthe DDSB."In 2017, the Elementary Teachers' Federation ofOntario called on schoolboards across the provinceto rename schools bearing the name of Canada's firstprime minister, callingMacdonald "the architectof genocide against Indige- nous peoples."Pickering Trustee ChrisBraney said he has heard from members of the pub-lic about the name of SirJohn A. Macondald P.S.and supported the motion to start the renaming pro-cess. "We've had many callsfrom the community forquite awhile. I do believe that we're going down theright course of action byhaving the community weigh in," he said. The next step is for theDDSB to establish a nam-ing committee for each school. The committees will beresponsible for providing the board with a short listof recommended names —the committees also havethe options to recommend that the name of a schoolremain unchanged.DDSB trustees approvedanew school naming policy on April 19, which includescriteria and guidelines for aschool's name to be changed.Under the new policy, there are several scenariosin which a school is eligible to be renamed including ifthe current name "does not align with the board's com-mitment or legal responsi- bilities to Indigenousrights, human rights, anti-oppression, anti-racism, anti-discrimination andequitable and inclusive ed-ucation."The new policy says ac- ceptable school name op-tions include: a "renownedindividual of historical sig-nificance whose contribu- tion to the local communi-ty, Canadian society or tothe world is recognized and valued;" a geographic land-mark associated with thelocation of the school suchas a street name; or the name of a significant Cana-dian event.
