OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM It doesn't get better than this. Stepping out the door on a mid-May morning should put you front rowcentre at one of the best concerts in Canada. Not only are your neigh-bourhood nesting birds on territory, singing away — robins, song sparrows, ori- oles, cardinals, mourningdoves — but if you live near a woods or creek valley you may hear thrushes, to- whees and chickadees, or near a wetland, red-winged blackbirds. Plus, other songbirdsare migrating through, adding their own notes and phrases to the musical mix, so it's definitely worth pausing and listening. Of all the unique voices you might hear these days, three stand out. Not be- cause they're the most beautiful, perhaps, but be- cause of their amazing rep-ertoire. Like the famous lyre- birds of Australia, ourNorth American "mimics" repeat songs of other birds they hear, weaving them into their own solo perfor-mances. Recognizing bits and pieces, you can tell for certain what other song- birds they've been spend- ing time around. Brown thrashers, northern mockingbirdsand grey catbirds, mem- bers of the family Mimi- dae, all have this special talent, but put their own spin on it. If you hear song phrases repeated twice, usuallybelted from the top of a tall tree, you'll know it's a thrasher singing. The well-named mock- ingbirds go all out and de- liver each stanza three ormore times in a row, em- phatically, from a hydro pole or mid-size tree. They're renowned for sing-ing any time of day, and even through the night. Catbirds, denizens of densethickets, tend to run their copycat songs together in a quieter jumble, a splashing stream of musical phrases. You can also locate cat- birds by their telltale "me- ow." While most brown thrashers winter in the southeastern USA, my friend Dianne Pazaratzwas lucky to have one vis- iting her yard in Oshawa all winter, scratching for seeds under her feeder. She's hoping it will stay and nest in the neighbour- hood, but so far hasn'theard it singing. She's also hoping the grey catbird that nested in her shrubbery year before last will return from Mex- ico or Central America and serenade her all summerlong. Dianne knows and loves northern mockingbirds, too, for they nested outsideher office window when she worked at GM head- quarters, overlookingMcLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve. While mockingbirds don't usually migrate, some here at the northern edge of their range may do so. A few have been known to follow railway corridors, good habitat for them, all the way to James Bay. Nature queries: mcar-ney@interlinks.net or 905- 725-2116. Durham nature writerMargaret Carney has morethan 4,500 species on her life list of birds, many seenin far-flung corners of ourbeautiful planet. MORNING MUSIC FROM DURHAM SONGBIRDS MARGARET CARNEY Column Outdoors columnist Margaret Carney says it's a wonderful time of year to hear birds singing in the morning. But don't always believe what you hear: Carney notes three kinds of songbirds, including the brown thrasher, 'repeat songs of other birds they hear, weaving them into their own solo performances.' Mike McEvoy photo BROWN THRASHER NDP ATTACKS ON GOVERNMENT 'NOT HELPFUL' To the editor:There are a great manyresidents of Ontario and Durham Region that havebecome increasingly frus-trated with the never-end-ing twists and turns during the third wave of COVID-19.However, there is an evengreater issue than the seemingly never-endingfight against this world-wide pandemic: the intensefueling of the flames by the prominent naysayers.I am referring specifi-cally to the Official Opposi- tion in Ontario and in par-ticular (Ontario NDP lead-er) Ms. Andrea Horwath. Everyone needs to keep in mind that this pandemicis worldwide and Canada isincluded. It arrived uninvited andthe government of Ontario,in my estimation, is contin-ually striving to stay ahead of this catastrophe and minimize its impact by making changes based onmedical and scientific in-puts. The changes are not al-ways popular, and the fre-quency is disturbing, how-ever, they are necessary as the changing situation dic-tates. What is not helpful is the continual fueling of theflames by Ms. Horwath, who passes judgment onand criticizes everything after every event. I would agree that thereis a need to hold our electedofficials accountable, how- ever, I strongly believe thather messaging during thispandemic is wrong! It is extremely clear thatthe leader of the NDP hasonly a political agenda tooffer. Suggesting that the premier of Ontario is a liar, and that Ontario didn'thave to be here, is not help- ful.I sincerely believe thatMs. Horwath's approach to her job as a political critic is only adding to the mentalanguish of an already over-whelmed population. It's time for a change bythe Official Opposition, ei-ther their approach, or theirleader? I suggest both!DAVE BRIGGS,OSHAWA WHITBY READER AMUSED BY MESSAGE ON HUGE TOPSOIL BAGS To the editor:Something struck me asfunny during my morningrun today (April 30). Their vision in- cludes a trailhead andparking lot off North Road.Much of the land sur- rounding the heritagehamlet of Whitevale is be-coming part of the Seatondevelopment, a large com- munity that's on its way upafter decades of planning. The provincially ownedland is managed by Infra-structure Ontario (IO) andre-designation would re-quire approval from the provincial government."What the pandemic hasreally done is put the im-portance of outdoor spaces and the contribution tophysical and mentalhealth," said resident and group member Mary Ev-ans. "The exponential vol-ume of people coming to the hamlet is unbelievableand it just speaks to theneed and desire to get tonatural spaces." The gravel pit landswere designated as 'resi-dential' in the Central Pick- ering Development Plan in2006, but the city now seesthe benefits of keeping thearea natural. "On behalf of the cityand in support of the Whi-tevale community, I re-spectfully request the pitbe protected as I believe itwould be an important ad-dition to the Natural Heri- tage System in Seaton,"Mayor Dave Ryan said in arecent letter to Minister ofInfrastructure Laurie Scott. The property has longbeen for sale. "From a developmentperspective, significant im-ported fill is required to de- velop the site, which cur-rently slopes from east towest," Ryan said in his let- ter.Ward 3 regional council-lor David Pickles has pitched the vision to IO aswell as Pickering-UxbridgeMPP Peter Bethlenfalvy'soffice, and said the prov- ince and the Toronto andRegion Conservation Areaare considering the possi- bility of re-designating thelands."I think everybody kind of knows where everybodyis," Pickles said in an inter-view. The wheels are in mo-tion.???"We're hopeful," he said. "I mean, these things, they move slowly."IO spokesperson JeffGiffen did not address questions regarding thespecific area, but said"Over 60 per cent of the Seaton lands - upwards of3,800 acres - have been des-ignated by the province as non-developable NaturalHeritage Space. Integrat-ing natural lands for thePickering community, the plan for this space is re-garded as highly sustain-able." He said IO is currentlyconsidering its next steps.Bethlenfalvy said in anemail: "These are impor- tant pieces of property thattruly make Pickering awonderful community tolive, work and play. I en- courage our partner mu-nicipalities, residents, andnetwork of supporters to continue to work with therelevant parties to find asolution that is beneficialto all." Whitevale resident andgroup member DanielleBesseling said visitors have been showing supportfor the group's vision."It's kind of re-energized our efforts more to contin-ue with this," she said. The group has a grow-ing online petition, entitled Add a trailhead and newNatural Park to the Seatontrail, which had collected nearly 1,900 signatures bythe time of publication. "I do feel like there ismuch more of an aware- ness just generally of natu-ral spaces," said Besseling."It's just time." STORY BEHIND THESTORY: Durhamregion-.com covered this issue in 2016 and felt it deserved anupdate as the Seaton devel-opment takes shape. NEWS‘WE’RE HOPEFUL. School boards in Dur-ham set deadlines that have passed already, including the Durham District SchoolBoard, which asked fami-lies to make a decision by 11:59 p.m. on May 4. The direction from theprovince leaves boardsscrambling to change course. On the night of May 4,the DDSB sent a letter to el- ementary school familiesnoting that an initial deci-sion is still required by May4— however there will now be a one-week window inmid-August to confirm thechoice."We believe that this re-vised approach will pro-vide an opportunity for allelementary families to make a final decision be-fore the start of the 2021-22school year at a time whenthe COVID-19 situation will be much clearer," the DDSBletter says. The Durham Catholic District School Board re-quired a decision from fam-ilies by April 21 with justover 800 elementary stu- dents opting for virtuallearning. The Catholic board said in a statement on May 4that officials are lookingover the new information from the province."DCDSB just received funding and operational di-rectives from the Ministryof Education late this after-noon. The senior adminis- trative team are taking- some time to analyze theinformation. Once we have a complete understandingof what is contained there-in, we will communicateout to our parents/guard- ians as to any changes thatmay be forthcoming."At the Peterborough Victoria NorthumberlandClarington Catholic Dis-trict School Board the deadline has also passed, with about 600 families signing up for virtuallearning for 2021-22.PVNCCDSB communi-cations manager Galen Ea- gle says the board will "pro-vide families with the op-portunity to revisit their decision up until June 1,"but that they don't expectmuch movement in thenumbers. "We'll communicatewith families about the vir-tual school registration once we've had more timeto consider today's news,"Eagle noted. Since the pandemic has been tough on mentalhealth, and with gyms be-ing closed much of the past year, Kernaghan wanted tocreate a safe, fun, welcom-ing environment for peopleof all fitness levels. "This past year hasmade us aware of how im-portant it is to take care of our mental health," shesays. So, the certified Pilatesinstructor chose to open up her own virtual studio, Pi-lates with Caitlin, last July. "Starting any new busi- ness, it's a challenge, espe-cially in the middle of a pan-demic, but it's been soamazing," she says. First, Kernaghan hired abusiness coach."Since I had never runmy own business before, ithelped having a mentor,"she says. "It was extremelycrucial in making it a suc- cess."Kernaghan offers pri-vate, group and corporateclasses. "I'm able to help supportpeople who are all over theworld," she says. People from places as faras Australia, England andthe Philippines have joinedher classes. The exercise helps withbalance, flexibility andstrength, improves pos- ture, and is safe for newmoms."You will not sweat buck-ets, but you'll feel it over the next couple days," she says.A benefit of a virtual class: participants can turn their camera off if they'reshy."I just make it a lot moreaccessible for people," Ker- naghan says.A plus of signing up forvirtual classes as opposedto YouTube videos: it keeps people accountable andsomeone is there to provideguidance. "And it's a social aspecttoo," Kernaghan says. The new business owneris considering hosting some outdoor classes in thewarmer weather if restric-tions lighten up. National Nursing Week celebrates the contribution of nurses during the second week of May, the same week as Florence Nightingale’s birthday, May 12. That con- tribution touches aspects of care includ- ing long term care, intensive care, public health care, and during the pandem- ic roles such as contact tracing, policy development and planning for care. The theme this year is #WeAnswerTheCall and was developed by Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) to showcase the many roles that nurses play in a patient’s health-care journey. “The pandemic brought to light the courage and commitment that nurs- es work under every day and showed the important role that nurses play in the community. This year, Johnson & Johnson, the world’s largest and most broadly-based health-care company, has sponsored National Nursing Week to showcase its commitment to the well-being of Canada’s health-care pro- fessionals,” states the announcement of the week by the CNA. “This global COVID-19 pandemic has shown the world the important role that nurses play in keeping people healthy across the lifespan,” stated Annette Kennedy, International Council of Nurses (ICN) president. In 1971, ICN designated May 12, the birthday of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale, as International Nurses Day. In 1985, CNA members started to negoti- ate with the federal government to have the week containing May 12 proclaimed as National Nurses Week annually. Soon after, the federal minister of health pro- claimed the second week of May as National Nurses Week. In 1993, the name was changed to National Nursing Week to emphasize the profession’s accom- plishments as a discipline, according to the Canadian Nurses Association website. Last year, the World Health Organization declared 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, yet another rec- ognition of the vital role of those in the profession. The announcement was made prior to the WHO declaration of the pandemic that has continued to chal- lenge nurses and other frontline health workers for more than a year.
