If you’ve never tried darker syrup, either “dark” or “very dark”, it has finally started to gain the respect we feel it has always deserved. In the past, lighter and more delicately flavoured syrups, which come from the earliest runs of sap, were considered superior. The later/darker sap often being relegated to “commercial” use. Cooking and baking mostly. We’ve always felt it should be, like ones preference in wine perhaps, up to the individual. Don’t let someone tell you what you like. We’ve always preferred the stronger, bolder maple flavour that dark and very dark syrups offer. You be the judge. The motion specifically wouldhave enlisted the services of theCity of Pickering's integrity com-missioner to establish a frame-work for a Pickering lobbyist reg-istry and report back to council bythe September meeting. The registry was meant to be anaccountability and transparencytool, said Ward 1 city councillorMaurice Brenner, who introduced the motion. "The goal of a registry is to al- low members of the public to clear- ly see who is lobbying the City ofPickering's public office holders, and aligns with the city's valuesand strategic priorities," Brenner wrote in a document he circulatedto council. "A registry emphasizesaculture of open, transparent and accountable government."Lobbying is essentially com-municating with a public officeholder, such as a member of coun- cil or the city's senior leadershipteam, with the goal of advancing abusiness or financial interest. This could be in regards to a devel-opment or the granting of a citycontract, for example."I think that it's something that's worth us looking at," Bren-ner said at the meeting. But most members of councilfelt it wasn't necessary to create such a registry."I think it looks to create a bu- reaucratic solution to a problem we don't have," said Ward 1 region-al councillor Kevin Ashe.Ward 2 city councillor Ian Cum-ming said it could push the public further away."In fact I see it creating an issuewhere a lot of people are going to feel like it's another level of bu-reaucracy they've got to getthrough," he said. When Brenner said, "I would never move a lobbyist registry toimpede the ability of the public,"Cumming said he only meant thepublic could see it as another hur-dle they have to go through.Ward 2 regional councillor BillMcLean, the only other member of council who supported the mo-tion, called it "a totally transpar-ent process" that's for developersand consultants, and parties that may want the city to support theirproject, not regular citizens. "Why should the public nothave access to who we're meetingwith, what we're talking about, make sure there's no secret roomdeals going on?" he said. "To methat's transparency and that's all this is about."He said it was unfortunate thatthe city couldn't even initiate aprocess to look into the matter. "The real reason why we shouldgo though with this is so we are as transparent as possible about ourbusiness dealings with those whomight want us to support a pro- ject," he said.In a recorded vote, the motionwas voted down 5-2. "These are challenging times for all levels ofgovernment with an erosion oftrust and confidence in elected of-ficials. This was a lost opportunity to start the rebuilding," Brennersaid after the meeting.
