Dear Seniors — fiveyears ago, that is how I be-gan my trial column. Whatfollowed was a plea, of sorts,to let seniors know that the younger generation needsthem. Needless to say, likemost columns, it elicitedquite a response. One read- er even began their letterwith "Dear Junior."Since that trial run, I've received invaluable re-sponses from a wide cross-section of people. But se- niors make up most of myfeedback and cheeringsquad. You have written let- ters, emailed me and sentme photos of your familieswith your grandchildren. You've rejoiced over me many times, including withthe last column on WalterGretzky. I had a few readers even email to say theythought something had hap-pened to me, having not seen the column in the printedition for a while (althoughthey can all be found on dur- hamregion.com). This true, patriot labour of love hasbrought a level of engage-ment that I never expected and has been vastly reward-ing as a result. Weeks before my first, of-ficial column, my fatherpassed away and then lessthan a year in, my mothermoved to a long-term-care facility. I went throughthese times, sharing theseexperiences along the way.Earlier this year, my godfa- ther passed away and, likePrince Philip, he was justshy of his 100th birthday. The only difference was thathis queen, who he had alsobeen married to for 70-plus years, had passed on beforehim. In one day, I watchedboth Prince Philip and an uncle's services. He, too,was like a statesman in ourmidst.Five years after that trial column, we find ourselveshere — existing, occupying, holding on and living life —sometimes all of these in oneday. Wherever you findyourself today, you're stillneeded. You may have had many losses since we beganthis journey together, and Iknow many of you are miss-ing your families, especially your grandchildren. Sometake the vaccine, hopingthat it will mean being re- united.Whatever happens, inthe spirit of that first Dear Seniors column, let me endwith two things: One, it's notjust your family that needsyou, and two, you are carry- ing a piece of your family'sstory that no one else has.So, what are you going to do about this? Some sort of ac-tion is required, and for me,too. As my mentor bluntlysaid, "You better stop being fascinated by people's liveswhen they're gone and get toknow them while they'rehere." Ouch, but it's true. One of us has something toshare and the other, some-thing to receive and we only have now to do it. So, happyanniversary readers! We'renot finished yet. —Renae Jarrett lives inDurham, loves Canada andis passionate about truth in current affairs. She can bereached at: asrjsee-sit@gmail.com. When captured before ithits the ground, rainwater is free of pesticides, pollutantsand chemicals it often gath-ers when running acrossstreets, sidewalks and lawns. Rainwater, which is natural-ly acidic, can balance out thealkaline nature of soils near chemically basic concrete. Itstemperature is similar to theair, and does not shock plants' roots like tap waterdoes. When outdoor water re- strictions are in place, waterfrom a rain barrel can also beused to wash vehicles or wa- ter lawns., and it's a greatsource of stored water if anemergency ever arises. SERVIcE cEnTER HOURS GARDEN CENTRE NOW OPEN!! and he opened a second locationin Whitby in the summer. "It's just sitting there emptywith all of the bills coming in reg-ularly," he says. Emily Hogeveen, a spokes-person for Ontario Minister of Fi-nance and Pickering-UxbridgeMPP Peter Bethlenfalvy, writes in an e-mail, personal servicesbusiness owners that were re-quired to close due to lockdowns were eligible for the OntarioSmall Business Support Grant. "More than 100,000 Ontariosmall businesses have received a grant between $10,000 and $20,000,and as part of the minister's bud-get announcement last month weare doubling the grant, issuing asecond payment to all eligible re-cipients," she says. Lewis says while he has ap- plied for relief for his Pickeringlocation, he hasn't seen any mon-ey materialize since he appliedearlier this year, which includes CERB for himself.Since he didn't open his Whit-by location prior to March 2020,that shop is unable to receive sup- port. Besides, he feels the retroac-tive relief he applied for is not ide- al."I first think they should takeoff the retro and start payingbusinesses immediately," he says.Beauty United Canada haslaunched a petition stating the beauty and personal services in-dustry needs to open immediate-ly, and it had received more than35,000 signatures at the time of publication."Most of our members did notget rent support," the petitionsays, adding 20 per of the sector has already closed permanentlyand more will not survive thislockdown. The petition notes the indus-try helps clients feel good."At a time when Ontarians areunder considerable stress, looking good and feeling goodabout ones' self is important formental health," it says. Hogeveen says the health andwell-being of Ontarians remainsthe government's top priority, and the government is being guided by world-class publichealth care experts, who have ad-vised the province when and if re- strictions need to be implement-ed."Given the current rate of CO-VID-19 cases around the prov- ince, we have implemented mea-sures designed to reduce mobili-ty and limit opportunities for in- dividuals to have close contactwith others in order to help stopthe spread of this virus," she says. But Lewis says the govern- ment is looking at the wrong in-dustry."We have masks on, we havegloves on, we have PPE on ," he says, adding chairs are sanitizedafter every cut, and they "sanitizeall day long." The petition states "Hairdress-ers are the only licensed journeyperson under the Ontario Collegeof Trade that is trained in (Infec- tion Prevention and Control) thatremains shut down."Lewis adds he invested a "ri-diculous" amount of money into PPE before having to lockdown."Don't leave us in the dark andmake us acquire all these debts," he says. He's been using his own sav-ings to continue paying his bills. He questions what types of supports the government willhave in place for barbershops andsalons that have managed toscrape by when it's time to re-open. STORY BEHIND THE STORY:Small business is hurt-ing and Durhamregion.com wasasked to look into how the per-sonal services industry is being impacted by COVID-19. NEWS Continued from page 1 'WE HAVE MASKS ON, WE HAVE GLOVES ON, WE HAVE PPE ON' Media spokesperson for Pickering-Uxbridge MPP Beter Belthlenfalvy, Emily Hogeveen, says the province is providing support for small business, including those in the personal care industry. peterbethlenfalvy.ca photo SCAN FOR MORE Scan the code to read more Durham news online. It’s a day to recognize the incredible contribu- tion of these health care professionals whose vital role has been amplified by the pandemic, now in its second year. We’re invited to shine a light with phones, flash- lights and candles at 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 1 as a collective symbol of thanks. The association is asking us to share hashtags #DoctorsDay and #ShineALightForThem and to post messages at doctorsday.ca and share thoughts, images and videos of sup- port on social media. Doctors’ Day is being celebrated by municipalities and attractions including the CN Tower and Niagara Falls. They are shining blue lights as a tribute to local doctors and physicians across the province in an extra show of support at this challenging time. According to the OMA, Ontario’s doc- tors treat and care for more than 340,000 patients across the province every day. “Ontario’s doctors work hard to ensure that patients are getting the care they need, whether it’s in a hospital, long-term care home, clinic, research lab or in a patient’s home,” states the OMA. “As our front-line heroes battle the third wave of COVID-19, doctors need our sup- port more than ever. Let’s make Doctors’ Day 2021 bigger than ever.” The OMA has produced a series of “Meet the Doctors” videos that feature testimoni- als from several physicians, each with a different medical specialty. Dr. Wendy Kennette speaks to the emotional impact patients have on doctors and the human aspect of palliative medicine. Obstetrician- gynecologist Dr. Jessica Dy shares the importance of communicating the memo- rable days experienced by those in her profession and Dr. Srikala Sridhar, medical oncologist, talks about how doctors can learn from their patients. The power of the gift of sight and the importance of relating to the experience of patients is the message that eye physi- cian and surgeon Dr. Raj Rathee shares. Psychiatrist Dr. Frank Sommers recalls a frightening encounter as a young doctor with a patient in distress and how doctors can intervene in emergency situations. Dr. Chi-Ming Chow speaks to the impor- tance a supportive family as experienced in his cardiology practice and Dr. Teresa Chan shares insights about care in the emergency department. Dr. Silvy Mathew, a family and long-term care physician explains the con- nection between doctor and patient and their family and how caring doesn’t stop at the end of the work day. "I am grateful that we are all safe and healthy, but I have missed them terribly. Imiss their personalities, laughter, andjoy," Hector-Alexander said via email. As the COVID-19 vaccine rollout contin-ues in Durham, many residents have start-ed imagining what they want to do whenthe pandemic ends. Hector-Alexander said although sheconsiders herself "an introvert," she looksforward to hugs, laughter and chattingface-to-face. For her, one silver lining of the pandem-ic is it has shone a light on the disparities that exist as COVID-19 has disproportion-ately impacted marginalized groups (ra- cialized communities, women, low incomeand others). It has sparked conversationsabout the collective action needed to bringabout change. "At the beginning of the pandemic, many folks would say to me, 'At least weare all going through the same thing.' I of-ten thought to myself, 'No, we're not.'There are marginalized communities whoare experiencing this pandemic very dif-ferently than others," Hector-Alexander said.Hector-Alexander is working to developthe region's anti-racism task force, cham-pioning anti-racism initiatives, and im- proving equity, diversity and inclusion inDurham Region. Ating Bahay opened in 2017 asaFilipino restaurant and gro- cery store, offering local resi-dents a place to score hard to findproducts and ingredients.
