They were perhaps in their early 30s at the time. Fast forward five (5) decades and we are now over 60 years old, and they are in their 80s. As with all of us, we strive for good health with the future in the back of our minds and then age creeps up and takes us by surprise. The back aches, the joints that pain us, and the ever present “I can’t eat that anymore”. Time changes all physical things and all we can try and do is not let it overtake our daily lives. Who among us has thought of our own life in our 80s? Did our parents ever think or speak about this except to say, “Don’t ever put me in a home”. Many hours of each day of our professional lives are spent counselling the adult children of parents in their 80s and 90s. There is no plan in place. The fortunate ones still have a spouse living but more often than not they are alone at home. Family has passed. Friends are gone. Their children have their own lives and they “Don’t want to be a burden”. As adult children of parents in their 80s and older it is very easy to find yourself in a caregiver role that is not sustainable, as it takes both a physical and emotional toll. There is also the guilt. If choices are made while they are of complete sound mind, they can easily transition to a retirement home for independent living. No more cooking and cleaning. No cutting the lawn or shovelling snow. This becomes their new home. Living a full life and making new friends. For those who have declined, cognitively, there is an option to still enjoy life in a safe environment, within a secure memory care setting. Then there is the conversation that concerns the confusion and misconceptions that retirement living is the same as a nursing home also known as long-term care. This topic alone requires a full discussion to describe the difference. Suffice to say they are not the same. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought all this to a crisis management situation. The parents we thought who could manage just a bit longer at home found themselves often alone and isolated. Unable to still do the smallest of daily activities without some form of assistance. You can try and negotiate the muddy waters of our health care system, which does have the best of intentions, but falls short of the daily care we would want for our parents. There are many choices we as adult children have to assist our parents in the next step. One of these is Abbeylawn Retirement in Pickering. Abbeylawn, with a newly constructed addition, joined with a renovated existing building is now a 127-suite retirement home that can definitely be your choice. Abbeylawn operates with a talented and caring team of people who treat each and everyresidentasextendedfamily.Noresident has ever contracted the virus and all residents have had both vaccinations. Retirement is no longer a destination, it’s now a transition and a journey. It’s more important to think about what you’re retiring TO rather than what you’re retiring FROM. Please visit www.abbeylawn.ca and then call us. It is our privilege to assist you in this important phase of life, whether you choose Abbeylawn or not. Let us help you. OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM LETTERS & COMMENTARY Such a wonder, watch- ing colour return to ourgrey-brown winter world! Starting with small yel- low coltsfoot flowers in the scrubby areas they thrivein, pioneer plants re- claiming disturbed soils at the edge of lanes and trails. Then silver pussywillows turning into golden cat- kins, plus the first sunny dandelions providing vitalnectar and pollen to just- emerging bumblebees. And in the woods, a multi- tude of spring ephemerals covering the forest floor be- fore trees leaf out and steal all that bright warm sun-shine. Just about the first woodland wildflowers to bloom are hepaticas, tiny lavender blossoms on hairy stems, their three- lobed leathery leavesspread like a mat beneath them. They prefer lime- stone soils, while equally delicate spring beauties, their white petals streaked with pink, will grow in just about any deciduouswoods. Another early mar- vel is the much bigger bloodroot, its showy white, golden-hearted bloomemerging from a clefted, clasping leaf. Juice from the roots is red-orange, giv-ing this prized ephemeral its name, but don't check that out! It's also poison- ous.Dog-toothed violets start by sending out point- ed, fleshy green leaves mot- tled with purple — the source of another common name for them, trout lily. A colonial wildflower spreadby underground corms, they carpet the ground with their leaves before well-established ones send up a nodding yellow blos- som with curled-back pet- als and sepals, three of each. By the time they're inbloom, squirrel corn and Dutchman's breeches will have minuscule waxy white flowers marching uptheir slender stalks, to be pollinated by bees, beetles and other insects. Blue co-hosh will be uncurling their purplish leaves, and trilliums, the showiest spring ephemerals of all, will be carpeting the woods with white. Meanwhile, at the mud-dy edge of wetlands, marsh marigolds will be bursting forth, golden-yellow clus- ters atop bright greenleaves, sunshine come to earth. And on a ridgetop, mayapples will be unfurl- ing their sizable green um- brellas before opening big white blooms beneath. With so much beautyand diversity rampant in our few remaining wild places, it's obvious why vis- itors should strictly stick to paths and trails. This COVID spring we're enjoy- ing the great outdoors inever larger numbers, crowding into parks, con- servation areas and nature reserves. One careless step off an established path can flat- ten a vulnerable wildflow-er, compact the soil and crush fungal filaments so vital to a forest's health. So just imagine what some-one with big feet wander- ing off across a woods could do! Wherever you go, stay on the path. And please spread the good word to everyone you see. Mike McEvoy photo SPRING BEAUTY TIME TO STOP FUNDING CATHOLIC SCHOOLS To the editor: It is high time to rectifythe blatantly discriminato-ry practice in our public education system that hasbeen perpetuated for over150 years as a result of theBritish North America Act of 1867. The fact that we contin-ue to have a dual school system in place in Ontariothat favours one religionover another, and thengoes the extra step to actu- ally provide public fundingto support this religious-based educational system, is beyond the pale.Even if it were to costtaxpayers more money toeliminate the Catholic school boards, it would beappropriate to do so. Lucki-ly, from all accounts, thiswould be a huge cost-sav-ing measure for the peopleof Ontario. That this system contin- ues on into the 21st century is an indictment of the lackof moral courage that has been on display in Ontarioprovincial politics formany years. The only pro- vincial political party inOntario that has recog-nized that this discrimina-tory practice cannot con- tinue is the Green party. When will the other pro-vincial parties recognize this obvious inequity andtake the necessary steps torectify this wrong?SCOTT FARNDON,AJAX ONLY 'MONDAY QUARTERBACKS' CAN HANDLE COVID To the editor:Re: 'Most governmentsfailed COVID challenge, says reader.'I'm struggling with theopening quote, and the rhe- torical questions at theconclusion of Mike Byrne'sletter. Admittedly, I'm notthe sharpest tool in the shed, however, I'm unableto draw any parallel be- tween the French histori-an, Marc Bloch, whose sig- nificant writings focusedon French medieval farm-ing, and today's world-wide epidemic? Mr. Byrne's letter seemsto suggest that had he beenrunning the World Health Organization over 2.5 mil-lion lives lost to COVIDworld wide could have been avoided? Durham pharmacies were to offer theAstraZeneca vaccine to people 55 and olderas early as last Monday. Eligible adults can visit ontario.ca/phar-macycovidvaccine to find a list of participat-ing pharmacies. They'll have to contact the pharmacy to make an appointment. It's notclear whether vaccines will be available atall participating Durham pharmacies. While Health Canada reviews data, On- tario is not using the AstraZeneca vaccinefor anyone under the age of 55.The list of Durham pharmacies includes five in Ajax, four in Oshawa, two in Claring-ton, three in Pickering, five in Whitby andseven north Durham locations.Cory Sydorenko is the regional director of pharmacy operations for Lovell Drugs, which is offering vaccinations at two localsites: at 617 Victoria St. W. in Whitby and at600 Grandview St. S. in Oshawa.Sydorenko said he's not sure how manyvaccine doses are coming but he believesthe new shipment of the AstraZeneca vac- cine is packaged with 100 doses per box andhe expects each pharmacy will receive atleast one box.Lovell Drugs has five locations in Dur- ham that are currently open but only twowere selected to distribute vaccines so far.Sydorenko said he's hoping in a few weeks the program can be expanded to all loca-tions. He encourages residents to book ap-pointments online where possible. Sydoren- ko said he was involved in the first phase ofvaccine distribution at pharmacies inKingston and it led to a large volume of calls. "Our stores in Kingston received a callevery five minutes," he said, adding thatpeople who have no online access can calleither location to book an appointment. "We're trying to encourage everybody tobook online because it will help ease the ad-ministrative burden on the phone calls at all the pharmacies because the problem is atthe same time our regular patients can't getthrough the phone lines to order their pre- scriptions." "The numbers aretrending in the wrong di- rection right across theprovince, right across theGTA, and we're a part ofthat," said Pickering May- or Dave Ryan.He questions why cer-tain jurisdictions are get-ting quicker and better ac-cess to the COVID-19 vac-cines than Durham."There's a lack of con- sistency," Ryan said. "Andlack of consistency leads toaperception of inequity, and that's problematic for me representing our com- munity, and it's somethingthat needs to be addressedgoing forward, and quitefrankly, I'm frustrated." On April 1, it was an-nounced people 60 and old-er could get the vaccine in Toronto and Peel."That means folks inPickering are going on andregistering and going into Toronto and getting theirshots," Ryan said. "Youshouldn't have to do that."Ryan was disappointedwhen Durhamwas not firstincluded in the initial roll-out of vaccines offered in pharmacies and doctors'offices. On April 1, it was an-nounced 350 additional pharmacies would be pro- viding the AstraZenecavaccine to those 55 and old- er. Three are in Pickering. "Ontario's capacity toget needles in arms contin-ues to grow by the day," said Premier Doug Ford inastatement. He added "We are readyto dramatically increase the number of vaccines wecan administer once we re-ceive a steady and reliable supply from the federalgovernment."A retailer with a Picker-ing location is doing what it can to make getting the COVID-19 vaccine easierfor its employees. Urban Nature Store isoffering paid time off forall full- and part-timehourly employees plan- ning to receive the CO-VID-19 vaccine. Even if thevaccination appointmentis scheduled for outside of work hours, Urban NatureStore will provide eachvaccinated employee with one full day's pay in orderto ensure there is no finan-cial barrier discouragingits workforce from getting vaccinated. "The health and well-be-ing of our employees is ourtop priority," said Paul Oli-ver, founder of Urban Na- ture Store. "While the deci-sion ultimately lies withindividual staff members, we want to support thosewho choose to get vaccinat-ed by alleviating any po-tential concern they may have surrounding time offand loss of pay."He is calling on otheremployers to do the same. "The sooner people getvaccinated, the soonerhopefully things will get back to somewhat nor-mal," he said.Last week, Ward 1 re-gional Coun. Kevin Ashe called on the province to address three issues: First, allowing people aged 70and up get the vaccine; thatDurham be included in the pharmacy vaccine pro-gram; and, allowing Dur-ham to set up an end-of-daywaiting list for unused vac- cinations. Two of these mattershave been addressed: resi- dents 65 and older can re-ceive a vaccine, and moreDurham pharmacies areproviding the shot. As of March 3, 103, 671total doses of the vaccinehad been administered in Durham. This includesboth first and second dos-es. STORY BEHIND THESTORY: As Durham is inthe third wave of CO-VID-19, residents need to know what's happening intheir community. A lot of us are worn out from a year of what feels like nonstop bad news; we’ve heard the phras- es “lockdown,” “case counts” and “test positivity” more than we ever wanted to. But in addition to patients, families and frontline workers, there’s another group for whom COVID isn’t just an in- convenience: business own- ers. Even in places with fewer restrictions, small businesses are having a hard time getting back to pre-pandemic sales levels, and they’ve taken on huge amounts of debt just to avoid shutting down. Here are some ways to keep your local businesses afloat. 1. Write a review:Where do you go when you want to learn more about a new busi- ness? Probably Google. So why not tell other consumers about a favourite spot of yours by leaving a glowing review online? 2. Follow them on social media: Not only do more fol- lowers help their visibility, but following is also a great way of learning about new products and sales. 3. Try something new: It’s easy and tempting to just stick to known quantities: the place where you always get burri- tos, the bookstore you order from, the stationery store where you’ve bought every card for five years. Spread the love a little and shop at a busi- ness you’ve never been to be- fore. 4. Buy a gift card:Not sure what to buy? Decide later! Five ways to keep supporting small businesses A Pickering toddler who wasborn without his right ear needsthe community's support to help him hear better.Two-year-old Dylan JayceMattai was diagnosed with a new mutation when he was born, andhe needs reconstructive surgeryof his right ear to help improve hishearing. Branchiootorenal (BOR) Syndrome affects his ears, neckand kidneys. Dylan has all thenerves to hear, but without a con-structed ear canal, sound will bemuffled and can impact hisspeech and language develop-ment. The procedure isn't available in Ontario, but is being performed in the United States.Dylan would be eligible for thesurgery next year and his parentswant to have it completed before their son starts school. But the $150,000 price tag forthe surgery performed by Dr. Youssef Tahiri in California is afactor."Up until this point my hus-band and I have been managing the cost of his care, including pay-ing for a BAHA (Bone AnchoredHearing Aid) hearing aid for him so he can receive the best qualityof sound through his right ear-drum, but for this surgery, wecan't do it on our own," Dylan's mother Shalini Singh says on Dy-lan's GoFundMe page. She started the campaign "tohelp with Dylan's reconstructiveear surgery and give him the bestchance at life."Singh had a risk-free pregnan- cy and the couple's baby boy was born on Sept. 19, 2018 at a healthy weight of seven pounds, 14 ounc-es."We were overjoyed to havehim in our lives but that joy quick- ly turned to panic and worry themoment the nurse handed him tome," Singh recalls. "My tears of happiness suddenly turned intopain and sadness. I could holdhim only for a few moments be-fore they took him away for tests." Doctors told the brand-newparents that one in every 10,000children is born with this new mutation and they don't knowwhy it happens. "My husband and I were bothterrified and our heart broke for our son but of course we love himunconditionally," Singh says. "Re-gardless of his ear he is our littlebaby boy." Dylan visits The Hospital forSick Children every year for a kid-ney ultrasound to make sure they continue to function normally. "Thankfully, his kidneys are developing well and we couldn'tbe more relieved," Singh says. There are no options to helpwith Dylan's ear reconstruction in Canada until he is 10 years old,and even then, it's not the sameprocedure and would require multiple surgeries. He was born on January 6, 1932 in Munich, Germany, the eldest of three siblings including his brother, Guido (pre-deceased) and half-sister, Christa. Bruno married his soul- mate and life partner, Lisa Stadlbauer in Munich, Germany on July 24, 1953. They immigrated to Canada in 1957 eventually making their home in Pickering, Ontario. Lisa's passing in 2012 was a tremendous loss to Bruno and one from which he never fully recovered. Initially employed in the camera business, Bruno later moved to Peg Perego, a family -owned Italian company based initially in Newmarket and then in Pickering that manufactured children's carriages, strollers, car seats, high chairs and riding toys. He ultimately became President of Canadian operations, retiring from that company 36 years later at the age of 73. Bruno and Lisa enjoyed travel and looked forward to their trips back to Germany and Austria. Bruno's interests also included tennis, skiing, and cars. He was also an avid reader and animal lover. He will be fondly missed by friends and relatives including his half-sister, Christa Neubacher and her husband, Franz, nephews Bernhard, Dietmar and Stefan who live in Austria as well as those who had a special relationship with him including Heather, Gerry and Peter Stuart and Allan Care of Pickering. Sincere thanks are extended to Dr. Vance Tran, the Lakeridge Health Out-Patient Palliative Care team, VHA Home Health Care and Nurse Next Door who provided ongoing support and care for Bruno in honoring his wishes to remain in his home. Cremation has taken place. As a result of Covid-19, there will be an online memorial accessible at www.etouch.ca. As an expression of sympathy and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Durham Region or the Lakeridge Health Foundation - Cancer Care Services. Cathy will be missed beyond belief but remembered for her sense of humour, infectious laugh and devotion to her family. If desired, donations to Lakeridge Ajax hospital would be appreciated.
