OPINION TO LEARN HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR OWN CONTENT VISIT DURHAMREGION.COM Locally owned and oper- ated businesses are the so- cial, cultural and economicheart of a community. Un- fortunately, this past year has left many unsure if they can continue. In a 5-part on- line series, we looked at the vital role local businesses play in our communities, the financial pressure they are under due to COVID-19 and what we can do to help them survive.Locally owned and oper- ated businesses are in trou- ble. While it's true that some creative and enterprising entrepreneurs have been able to find a way to succeedunder COVID-19, there are many other businesses whose survival is at stake. The Canadian Federa- tion of Independent Busi- ness is warning that this pandemic could force 75,000Ontario businesses to shut down. Talk to a local busi- ness owner and they will likely tell you about their fear they may have to close their doors for good. Such a loss would be dev-astating for towns and cit- ies across the province. These businesses are the fabric of a community. They provide jobs, prod- ucts, needed services, and much more.Local owners are often heavily involved in various volunteer causes and ser- vice clubs that improve theoverall quality of life in our towns. They run food drives and fund minor sports teams. They organize pro- jects to improve neighbour- hood parks or revitalize neighbourhoods. The storefronts of these businesses make up the character of our neighbour- hoods; they define our downtown. Once gone, we lose much more than just a store.Last week, we highlight- ed the important role local- ly-owned businesses play incommunities across Onta- rio, the pressure they are currently under and whatmay be gone if these stores can't survive. Yet they can survive. But it requires help. Each of ushas the ability to lend our support to these businesses that played a role in build- ing our community. What can you do? Here are five options. 1. Shop local. It soundssimple and it is. You no lon- ger need to physically go in- to a locally-owned store to shop local. Many are now offering online sales with either curbside pickup or delivery. Shopping at asmall business has proba- bly never been easier. 2. Support locally-owned businesses on social media. You could share your favou- rite restaurant's menu on social media. Share a photoof what you purchased at a local shop. Come up with some creative shop-local games to play with friendson social media. And make sure to always tag the busi- ness.3. If you don't need any- thing right now, but still want to help a local busi- ness, buy gift cards.4. Write a positive online review. A good word about any business can always help attract new customers. 5. Focus on buying di- rectly. Shop at your local farmers' market to buy di-rectly from producers. Many communities even have a virtual farmers' mar- ket. Where available, call local restaurants directly to order a meal rather than us- ing a delivery app. The res-taurant keeps more money from the purchase that way. HERE IS HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED BUSINESSES LETTERS & COMMENTARY NO TRAFFIC LIGHTS AT THREE-WAY STOP To the editor:Re: Bowmanville's three-way stop. I've lived about 400yards away from that inter-section for 47 years. I am guessing that I have used it about 50,000 times— probably a bit more thanthe two men (from local band Crease Rule, whowrote a song about the in-tersection). I can say with total hon- esty that I have never seenan accident there. Yes, Ihave experienced some mild road rage on occa-sion, usually because peo-ple are in too much of ahurry and run the stop sign, but not more thanany other intersection intown.Leave it alone, please. We don't need anotherlight. ALAN TIBBLESCLARINGTON IS PRIME MINISTER 'A BIT OF A DICTATOR'? To the editor:Re: 'I was sold a bill ofgoods,' by Prime Minister Trudeau says former Whit-by MP Caesar-Chavannes.Celina needs to be ad-mired for her choice to speak out against her deci-sion to leave the TrudeauLiberal government. It became apparentfrom reading this article, that the prime minister didnot value her. Justin Trudeau has al-ways claimed to be a 'femi-nist' and a 'champion' of women and ran his cam-paign on this, as well asbeing 'open and transpar-ent'. As we can see from hisactions, his claims haveproven to be untrue. Re-member the SNC-Lavalinscandal when two otherwomen spoke out againstthe Trudeau government's unethical actions? Trudeau threw Jody Wilson-Raybould and JanePhilpott under the bus.Justin Trudeau is show- ing his true colours, andnot in a positive way.Could it be that JustinTrudeau is a bit of a dicta- tor?ELAINE JOHNSONCLARINGTON WIND MADE MESS OF RECYCLABLES To the editor:Recycling. I looked upthe meaning of recycling inthe dictionary and no- where did it state the fol-lowing: to place loose plas-tics and papers in overflow-ing containers so the wind can redistribute them on toother people's properties. Please be considerate and look after your plasticand papers. Sophia Megan is behind the Super Sophia Project and has recently recorded her first song, "Horizons." Susie Kockerscheidt/Metroland SUPER SOPHIAMEGAN JUST WANTSTO HUG HERGRANDMOTHER NEWS need our support."On Jan. 20, Durham's medical officer of health Dr.Robert Kyle told the com-mission that, without a planin place by the Ministry of Health or the Ministry ofLong-Term Care, he usedhis own devices to file an or- der that brought LakeridgeHealth inside the home onApril 19 — six days afterfirst reporting the outbreak to the province."We were doing the bestwe can and flying a bit blindhere, but we knew that ac- tion needed to be taken," Kyle said. When questioned onFeb. 24, Minister of Health Christine Elliott said therewas an order issued onApril 18 or April 19 that al-lowed hospitals to move in- to LTC homes."But for hospitals to go inand assume management of long-term-care homes, adifferent issue, that re-quired an order from theminister of long-term care," she said.Deputy Minister ofLong-Term Care RichardSteele explained on Feb. 26 the process of hospital part- ners taking over manage-ment was new, and around"the same time as Dr. Kyle was putting in place his or-der for Orchard Villa, we ac-tually issued a minister's di-rective that provided broad authority for ... homes to es-sentially take assistanceand take direction from hospitals and indeed othersin managing outbreaks."Delayed testing resultsalso came up. "It was noted at OrchardVilla that it was taking twoto five days to get these testresults back, which makes it really difficult to then identify and isolate cases,"said Lakeridge Health in-fectious diseases specialist Dr. Daniel Ricciuto on Jan.20.Dr. Joel Kennedy, the co-lead of the COVID-19 testing centres for LakeridgeHealth, said some LTChomes were getting results "by fax, and in fact, somewere getting them by mail,so physical envelopes com-ing four to five days later." The Canadian ArmedForces arrived on April 28,11 days after Minister ofLong-Term Care Merrilee Fullerton noted they were needed. She appeared before thecommission on Feb. 26, and confirmed that on April 17,she wanted the troops in Or-chard Villa within 24 to 48hours. Fullerton said the prov-ince asked the military andthe federal government forhelp around April 22, but ittook the military almost aweek to respond.Deputy Health Minister Helen Angus explained in aFeb. 24 interview, the pro-cess for requesting the mil-itary goes through a formal request for assistance thatruns through the Ministryof the Solicitor General over to the federal government. "They consider and thenwrite back to us," she said.Fullerton said in hind- sight, "the military wasmore suited to a flood, a di-saster, something that had already happened." "Really intense fire, a lotof heat and a lot of smoke involved," he said. "All ten-ants were evacuated; twotenants were treated and went to the hospital."One woman was treatedfor smoke inhalation andlater released while a 71- year-old woman was ad-mitted due to a medical in-cident. Firefighters conductedsearch and rescue opera-tions in the building, in-cluding rescuing people trapped on the upper floorsof the four-storey struc-ture. Tenants say firefight-ers extended truck ladders to reach people trapped onbalconies and escortedthem down through the smoky stairwell. The fire left 13 units un-inhabitable, including theentire second floor, where the fire broke out, as wellas units on the groundfloor, which were damaged by water. Some tenants opt-ed to stay with friends orfamily. Clark says 12 were taken to the South Oshawa Community Centre and re-located to an Oshawa hotel. The Ontario Fire Mar-shal and Oshawa fire pre- vention officers are investi-gating the fire's cause.Lisa Craig has lived on the ground floor of thebuilding for more thaneight years. At first she wasgoing to dismiss the alert because the building hashad false alarms."I go to my apartment door to open it and I couldsmell really bad smoke bythen and I turn around tocall out to my roommate, who was asleep.... And I can see out my living roomwindow, it looked like fire- balls falling outside mywindow and I could hear allsorts of yelling."Craig grabbed her cell- phone and her keys andrushed outside as smokefilled her floor."What was amazing is all the tenants appeared to lookout for each other, checkingif everyone was OK." Craig left her apartmentbarefoot and said a womaneven offered her shoes.Firefighters brought in a Durham Transit bus forthe displaced residents toshelter for a couple of hours while the communi-ty centre was opened forthem and the building was aired out. Craig said her unit is amess."I'm directly below theapartment that was on fire," she said. "I got thebrunt of the water that thefire department sprayed in his apartment. My apart-ment is literally flooded.Craig doesn't have rent-er's insurance and is wait- ing to hear if the landlordcan offer people alternativeaccommodations. She's worried she'll be left to lookfor a new apartment."I don't know what be-comes of me. When you're on ODSP, landlords nowwill not rent to you if you'reon assistance unlessthere's a co-signer."Clark said the initialdamage estimate is $1 mil-lion, but that figure may climb higher. He said thefire alarm system was work-ing in the building and thewarning saved lives. He also lauded his fire-fighters for their response."The crews had a very difficult job under very dif-ficult situations with evac-uees and the intensity ofthe fire," said the fire chief. In Durham Region, with our ever-evolvingmanufacturing sector and robust retail hub, and ourstrategic location withinthe Greater Golden Horse-shoe, supply chain man- agement can play a pivotalrole in the economy inshaping the short and long-term prosperity ofthe community. Goods and services aren't the onlycritical component of this logistical conundrum: asteady pipeline of talent isalso important. Today's employers needmulti-skilled profession-als who are able to take fulladvantage of technologi- cal information systems, know how to detect newbusiness niches, and open up new markets. TrentUniversity Durham GTAis preparing to welcomethe first students to a first- of-its-kind degree pro-gram in Logistics & Sup-ply Chain Management. When I first stepped in- to my role as Dean andHead of Trent Durham, Imet with many municipal and business leaders withagoal of identifying oppor-tunities where we couldconnect graduates to the job market. Logistics wasfrequently identified as afrequently identified as afsignificant and growing component of Durham'seconomy. Those in thefield noted the increasingfield noted the increasingfcomplexity of supply chain operations, and aneed for graduates withthe mix of skills ready to tackle the most complexproblems. The insights of our local partners havehelped us to shape a robust program that will help toproduce the next genera-tion of leaders in the logis-tics and supply chain in- dustry. One of the ways thatstudents will have the op- portunity to develop theirindustry expertise isthrough a fourth-year in-ternship capstone with or- ganizations and compa-nies right on Trent Dur-ham's doorstep. Graduates of this program will go onto shape the future of lo-gistics, both within the re-gion and across the world. Professional compe-tence in managing supplychain, and the ability to analyze data and developinnovative solutions willplay an integral role inproducing talent that can evolve with the times inour post-pandemic future. The City of Pickering is taking advantage of itsempty ice rinks to keep res-idents of all ages activeduring the COVID-19 pan- demic."This year, the O'BrienArena did not have ice put in as it typically would,"said Jordan Cahill, Picker-ing's co-ordinator of campand arena programs. So, when provincial re-strictions were lifted andprograms could beginagain, various programssuch as pickleball and bas-ketball were set up on theempty rink. Now, skateboard enthu-siasts can practise theirskills at an indoor skate-board park in Pickering. The O'Brien Arena In-door Skateboard Park has recently opened at the Chestnut Hill Develop-ments Recreation Com-plex, located at 1867 Valley Farm Rd., thanks to fund-ing support from the Jump-start Sport Relief Fund.Pickering is one of 668 sport and recreation orga-nizations across the coun-try to receive grant support to assist with strategies toreturn to sport and recre-ation programming.Long before the pan- demic, Pickering has beenworking on improvingskateboarding options."Really it all ended up with good timing for rightnow to make this happen,"Cahill said. "This wasn't sparked only because ofthe pandemic."The City of Pickeringcurrently has a skateboard park at Diana Princess ofWales Park, behind the rec- reation complex, which asbeen in place since the1990s. But skateboard en-thusiasts have long asked the city to open a new park. Cahill said the idea of atravelling skateboard park resulted from the skate-board park strategy. The indoor skateboardpark will remain in place until the spring, whenitems from the skateboard park can be relocated toprovide outdoor pop-up op-portunities. "Everything we have can be moved frequently,"said Cahill.More programs are re- turning to Pickering, in-cluding those for olderadults. Residents 55-pluscan register for pickleball at Don Beer Arena, locatedat 940 Dillingham Rd. Pro- gram options include drop-in style play, with member-ship, or instructional pro-gramming. Additional registeredprograms will run in-per-son and virtually, includ- ing fitness, dance, art, mu-sic and language. Durham residents whohave had the COVID-19 vac-cine are unlikely to spread the virus, but it is possibleand they should still be cau-tious about gathering ...and shouldn't expect to be immediately grabbing theirpassports. Lakeridge Health doc- tors addressed questionsabout the vaccine efficacyand hesitancy in a recentonline forum hosted by the Clarington Board of Trade. On Tuesday, March 9, theCBOT welcomed Dr. DanRicciuto, internal medicineand infectious disease spe-cialist, and Dr. Tony Stone, chief of staff for Lakeridge Health, to a virtual meetingto discuss COVID-19 and an-swer questions posed by themembers. HERE'S THREE INTERESTING ANSWERSFROM THE FORUM: Question: Can peoplewho have been vaccinated still carry the COVID-19 vi-rus and infect others whohave not been vaccinatedyet? Answer: "Overall it be-comes much more safe ... We now have emerging datasuggesting that not only do the vaccines save lives —decrease hospitalizationsand death — but also de-crease the amount of virus that you shed, so maketransmission less likely; it'snot zero, but make it less likely, and protect againstasymptomatic infection ...It seems to work across thewhole spectrum ... "With the long-term-care facilities, after we vac-cinated there, the rapid de- crease in the number of out-breaks and transmissions, even though we're seeingthese cases popping up, go to show there's probably asignificant effect on theability to spread the virus ... "Stay tuned with Public Health Agency of Canadaand Public Health Agencyof Ontario guidance on what we can do with respectto gatherings and masking, etc. Once everyone is vacci-nated we'll have a better lay of the land." — Dr. Dan Ric-ciuto Q:Can someone travel out of the country after be-ing vaccinated? A: "You've just heardabout emerging evidence around vaccine efficacyand reduced transmission. "But I would still cautionfolks, we're all going to be living by the provincial andfederal rules around pro-vincial and international travel — and no surprisethat there's a lot of cautionright now. "Even though we know that if you're vaccinated, you're less likely to getsymptoms, you're less like- ly to transmit. But somepeople still can transmit. We're not in a risk-free envi- ronment. "I suspect what we'll see, both at the federal and pro-vincial level, is still a fairlyaggressive approach until alot of vaccination has been complete ..."I'll be surprised if feder-ally and provincially we move quickly to relax therules around ... a vaccine-passport strategy. "I don't have a line of sight to what they're plan-ning. I'm predicting, orspeculating, that they're go- ing to want to be a bit cau-tious in the next six or eightweeks and wait for much more vaccine to be distrib- uted." — Dr. Tony Stone. Q: What about vaccinehesitancy among people who are concerned aboutthe safety? (Note: this wasnot a question posed by theaudience, but an issue raised by the doctors.)A: "Part of our sharedsuccess here is going to be, not only how do we helppeople to make sure theyhave vaccine access —that's a big concern for vul- nerable populations — butwhat about those who arereally on the fence? That'san important number inour community ..."It's really important forpeople to reach out to their primary care physician andlearn everything they canabout vaccine safety. Lotsof folks (have concerns) with the newness of the vac-cine. Even with hundreds ofmillions of doses having been administered, I stillhear it every day," — Dr.Stone.The full question and an- swer session can be foundon the CBOT YouTubechannel. For five hours last Satur-day, Suzie Macdonald livedaparent's worst nightmare. At 7 a.m. on March 13, two Durham police officersshowed up at the door of herhome in Sunderland with terrible news: her 30-year-old son, Tyler, had died ina single-vehicle crash inUxbridge the previous night."They told me my sonwas in an automobile acci-dent and he didn't make it,"she said. "They asked, 'Doeshe live here or does he livein Stouffville?' I said, 'Nei- ther. He lives in Bancroft'."Macdonald's mind, un-derstandably, was reeling. Her thoughts turned to her son's wife, at home in Ban-croft with one young child and pregnant with another. Macdonald informedher daughter of the terriblenews and alerted her daughter-in-law's parents. They made the choice todrive immediately to Ban-croft to break the news. "That's not something shewould want to hear on thephone," Macdonald said. As Macdonald wouldeventually find out, howev-er, the police were wrong. The 32-year-old man who died in the Uxbridge crashhad the same name as Tyler—including the same mid-dle name, according to po-lice — but was a differentman.Macdonald was still caught up in the whirlwindset off by the news from po-lice when her son's in-lawscalled from Bancroft around noon."They said, 'We just got here. The van's here and so is Tyler'," she recalled. After an initial wave ofrelief, Macdonald's mind turned to the family of theman who had died. Shewondered if they had beenmade aware of the accident. She also soon heardfrom Durham police: "Theycalled me and said how mortified they were, howsorry they were to put methrough that," Macdonaldsaid. Durham police ActingSgt. George Tudos con-firmed the misidentifica-tion had occurred and that an apology had been issuedto Macdonald."It's very rare that some- one would have all threeidentical names, but in thisspecific case, officers couldonly go with the informa- tion we had at our dispos-al," Tudos said. "We were not able to positively identi-fy the victim due to the cir- cumstances of this tragiccollision."The incident wasbrought to the attention of senior staff in the service'sNorth Division. Tudos said, "Our Officer in Charge ofNorth Division has re- viewed the incident and hasrectified the issue. We haveapologized to the Sunder-land community member." Macdonald said she hasaccepted the apology and acknowledges an unusualset of circumstances led to the error. "It was an honest mis-take," she said. "There wereso many similarities." "But I don't understandtheir lack of due diligence." But I didn't expect this much of achange," says Stephanie. Her last name andher daughter's name are not being used toprotect the child's privacy. Stephanie has diabetes and is at high riskfor COVID-19 complications, which meansboth mother and daughter have had to be very careful over the past year. Her daugh-ter is doing virtual school for Grade 5, onlyinteracting with friends online, and is dev-astated that the activities she loves, like soc- cer and art classes, are either cancelled ortoo risky. Stephanie signed her daughter up for on- line mindfulness and meditation classesand has allowed her to take "mental healthday" breaks from school."I feel a bit helpless. I know that she needs more socialization and more activi-ties. But we cannot take any risks right now.As a parent ... it's very upsetting to see your child like this."Local experts say similar scenarios areplaying out in households across DurhamRegion as the pandemic drags on past the one-year milestone. At Kinark Child and Family Services, the past year has seen an increase in crisisreferrals and crisis calls, which include sit- uations where a child or youth has suicidalideation. "The pandemic has really exacerbated the mental health concerns that were al-ready underlying. Families are stressed out.Kids are stressed out," says Shona Casola, clinical services manager at Kinark, which offers child and youth mental health servic-es such as counselling, therapy, crisis sup-port, family and caregiver support and in- tensive treatment. Carea Community Health Centre hasseen increased demand for child and youth counselling and recently relaunched its- Durham Counselling Walk-in Clinic in avirtual format.Kelly Ng, manager of health promotionand community development at Carea, says anxiety, stress and worry are some of themost common issues being seen in youngpeople."The routine is being disrupted, their school schedule may have changed withback and forth between online and in-per-son," she says. "There's also the not know- ing. When you have a break from school, will you be going back when you're sup-posed to be?"Ng says social isolation and missed mile- stones are also taking a toll. Carea is tryingto help fill the gaps by offering virtual pro-grams where kids and teens can cook, dis- cuss music and books and just socialize. The strain on young people is also beingseen at school. The Durham District School Board is still collecting data, but staff say anecdotal-ly there has been an increased demand forsocial work and psychological services. Brigitte Guglietti, a school social workerand attendance counsellor for the DDSB,says anxiety and stress can look differentdepending on a student's age. "From a younger perspective for thoseprimary kids, we're seeing a lot of dysreg-ulation. Struggles with behaviour at school," she says, noting this is due to a lackof routine as students move back and forthbetween learning at home and at school.Guglietti says older students might dis- engage from school all together, or showanxiety about contracting COVID-19 bychanging masks excessively or being afraidto touch surfaces at school. Carolyn Ussher, chief of social work forthe DDSB, notes the absence of activitieslike sports and dance — places where many kids "shine" outside of school — is also beingdeeply felt."It feels like a general feeling of grief andloss for lots of our kids; our workers are see- ing that as sort of an overarching theme,"she says. Mental health agencies in Ontario re- cently launched the Everything Is Not OKcampaign to highlight concerns that peopleare waiting too long for mental health care. "Through the pandemic, we are seeing highly concerning increases in seriouschild and youth mental health issues, in-cluding increased suicidality and increasesin eating disorders," says Kimberly Moran, CEO of Children's Mental Health Ontario."We know before the pandemic wait timesand wait lists were already too long. Weneed the government to partner with us now to reduce wait times — an entire gener-ation of children are at risk." Data from the campaign shows calls to mental health crisis lines for children andyouth increased by 110 per cent from 2019 to2020 and that 28,000 children and youth inOntario are on wait lists for mental health care — some are waiting as long as two-and-a-half years. STORY BEHIND THE STORY: Th-roughout the pandemic, education reporterJillian Follert has frequently heard from local parents that their children are strug-gling with mental health as a result ofisolation, disrupted school routines andmissed milestones. This story checks in on the issue at the one-year mark in the pan-demic. Though oftenjoked about because oftheir "cowardly" name, they play an important roleand provide a valuable ser-vice for many other wood- land creatures. While most of our wood-peckers hang around allwinter, their cousins, the sapsuckers, are just nowreturning from as far away as Central America, as sapbegins to flow in Ontario woods. And they're not shyor quiet, filling both decid-uous and mixed woodswith their whining, catlike cries and staccato drum-ming. A bit larger than adowny, they're distin-guished by a longitudinalwhite stripe down eachfolded wing. All adults have a red forehead, andmales a red throat patch. The yellow wash on theirbelly is scarcely notice- able. Like all woodpeckers, sapsuckers grip bark withtheir toes and prop them-selves on their stiff tail, facing the tree. But in-stead of gouging for orgleaning insects, they drill lines of small holes inthe living cambium, re-leasing a flow of sugary, mineral rich liquid, the lifeblood of trees, whichthey lap up eagerly and re-turn to again and again. Soon pairs will be excavat-ing nesting cavities in thepunky heartwood of anailing tree limb, prior to incubating five-to-sixwhite eggs and raisingtheir hungry brood.Meanwhile, ruby- throated hummingbirdsfrom the Yucatan will bevisiting those oozing sap wells long before flowersare in bloom. They tend to visit thesame ones year after year, adding fresh holes to therows of scarring, which of- ten weakens a branch andin time can kill a tree. Butdead stubs, fallen logs and old nest holes are of hugevalue for a vibrant wood-land community. Sapsuckers themselves are part of the food chain, preyed upon by merlins,sharp-shinned hawks andCooper's hawks. Red squir- rels and weasels raid theirnests when they're able. Dr.Doug Tozer, a friend of mine working at Birds Can-ada, studied sapsuckernests in Algonquin Parkwhen researching for his PhD. This day will now be affectionately celebrated by the Hogan family as St. Michael's Day. Loving husband of 65 years to Imelda "Millie". Cherished and devoted father to Peter (Karen), Ron (Peggy), Dave (Yvonne) and Lynda (Martin). Beloved Grandpa to Sean, Erin, James (Michelle), Jeremy (Ashley), Katelyn (Brandon), Stacey and Christopher. Adored Great- Grandfather to Brylee, Aubrey and Nathan. Mike will be fondly remembered by all his Nieces, Nephews, extended family and friends. Mike was born in England and travelled the world, working on Canadian Pacific (CP) Ships. In 1954, Mike transferred and settled in Montreal working at the CP Hotel where he met the love of his life Imelda. Mike and Imelda brought their 4 kids to Pickering for him to continue his work at the CP Rail Yard in Scarborough. Mike truly enjoyed golfing, travel and family events. His love of golf was shared with his family which developed into golf trips with his sons and an annual Hogan family golf tournament. He will be most remembered as a true gentleman and someone with one of the biggest and kindest hearts anyone could meet. A celebration of Mike's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice in memory of Mike. Arrangements entrusted with the McEachnie Funeral Home (905-428-8488).
