Shaun Collier and DaveRyan both spoke about de-velopments heading their way and updated partici-pants on how the commu-nities are coping with thepandemic. Held virtually, the event attracted about130 listeners.Collier, the mayor ofAjax, said the municipalityhas been exploring ways tocut red tape and loosen re-quirements to make it easi- er for businesses to suc-ceed."Our mobile sign per-mits have been relaxed, and our outdoor tempo-rary patio permits have been extended through2021. A new intake will beopen in March for those who aren't already takingadvantage of the programbut would like to start," Collier noted. In addition to the mam-moth one-million squarefoot Amazon fulfilment centre now under con-struction at Salem andRossland roads, Ivanhoe Cambridge has filed an ap-plication to build a 1.2-mil-lion sq. ft warehouse anddistribution centre on the south side of KingstonRoad, opposite CasinoAjax. That could create upto 1,000 jobs. The Amazon develop-ment will also create about1,000 jobs. It's slated to open this September, and hiringshould begin in the spring,Collier said. Also, the current site of the Annandale Golf andCurling Club has been re- zoned to allow for employ-ment purposes."A letter of commitmenthas been received from a Fortune 500 company, for adistribution project which represents over $50 millionin development charges tothe Region of Durham andTown of Ajax," Collier said, adding it would create"1,000 construction jobs and 1,500 permanent jobsthereafter to benefit Ajaxand the Durham Region as a whole. Not only will pro-jects like this one bring sta-ble employment, develop- ment charges and permit-ting fees, but developmentslike these are critical to re-ducing the tax burden on property owners in Ajax."In his presentation,Ryan said, "Embargoed discussions are ongoingwith a major Canadiancompany for a 55+ acrecampus style development, and of course, you'll be thefirst to know when the dealis finalized."The campus would be in the city's Innovation Corri-dor along Hwy. 407.Ryan also used his time to talk up the need for anairport in Pickering."Clearly, there is nopressing need to increase capacity for passengerflights, but let's just put aside the notion of an air- port right now. This busi-ness model that I'm speak-ing of doesn't focus on pas- sengers," Ryan noted. "In-stead, it will be dedicated tothe science, technology, and industry of planes. Let's focus on creating alarge and dynamic eco-nomic development zone — the kind that organicallygrows and develops aroundairports."A study conducted by KPMG for the federal gov-ernment stated, "Thatthere is a business case for an aeronautics industryhub focusing on large-scaleaviation industrial busi-nesses, such as aircraft/ components, maintenanceand overhaul, avionic sys-tems, and cargo opera-tions," Ryan added. Ryan also spoke of the"friendly competition" be-tween Pickering, Whitby and Oshawa to be the homeof a new hospital. All threehave been pushing the pro-vincial government to situ- ate a hospital in their com-munities. "We need to make the governmentknow that the MZOs are by-passing all of the planningprocesses that are protect-ing the lands. We can't dothat. We have to be more re-sponsible." The blockade caughtsome attention, but work isunderway to prepare thesite for a warehouse to be used by a yet-to-be-namedcompany. Local youth activists or- ganized a shoe strike atPickering City Hall on Fri-day, Feb. 26."We think that any harm to our environmentis devastating," said co-or-ganizer Ally Zaheer. Organizers laid out 920 pairs of shoes that were do-nated to the cause to showthe strong opposition to thedevelopment, and the shoes were later donated tocharity. Co-organizer Devin Ma- thura was pleased with theturnout and attention itdrummed up, but disap-pointed no members of council came came out toacknowledge the protest."Once Mayor (Dave) Ryan and the council re-tires, they're leaving a lega-cy of warehouses and ur-ban sprawl behind," he said.Ryan said in a statementcouncil knew the site was sensitive in May when itvoted in favour of request-ing the MZO. I am a single mother of two, Nathan and Natalie, and the owner and creator of Mei Designs. Mei Designs is where I bring you all things funny, cute and a little inappropriate to your cupboards. The name Mei, which is Natalie’s middle name, means beautiful in Chinese and I knew I wanted to incorporate that message within my business, Mei Designs. Mei Designs started when Nathan was born in 2014 as an outlet for me to do my own thing and have my own time. I started by making things for friends and family as keepsakes, just for fun and somethingto keep me busy. I completely switched gears when Natalie was born in 2016, Mei Designs became my creative outlet todecompress after working full time and dealing with PPD after Natalie was born. In 2019, our family dynamic completely changed where I became a single mom to my kids. On topof that, Nathan experienced some major health issues which forced me to take a short leave from my full-time job to take care of him. Eventually, I was fired and it wasn’t until then that I really pushed MeiDesigns to its full potential and I fully trusted myself to take Mei Designs where it is now. Originally, I was working with vinyl on my items and adding as many products so I could to give avariety to offer to customers.Today, I fully follow my heart and offer products that I enjoy doing and sharing with everyone. Our signature items are mugs and tumblers, using permanent ink, they speak the truth and add a little joy to your regular coffee or tea routine. In the past several months Mei Designs has grown into somethingI have never dreamed of. Some have called me Durham Region’s “Mug Dealer” or the “New” Rae Dunn and my heart explodes every time I see customers enjoying my products. I have recently expanded my signature truth-speaking quotes to stickers and prints for people to enjoy outside of their drink routine. Mei Designs started for me but continues to be something I push through for my children. I am so proud ofhow I’ve grown both personally and business-wise and so proud to share this business that I have built. My children will always be my number one priority and I am showing that no matter what you arefaced with you can do what your heart desires and be happy and accomplish so much when you are determined. Thank you to all my past, reoccurring and new customers. You are making my dream a continued reality. Mei Designs We carry a variety of drinkware items, from ceramic mugs to stainless steel tumblers. Happy International Women’s Day 2021! INSPIRE • EDUCATE • LEAD • CELEBRATE INSPIRE • EDUCATE • LEAD • CELEBRATE Would you like to make a meaning- ful gesture in honour of International Women’s Day? Here are four activity ideas you can do alone, as a family, be- tween friends or at the office this year. 1. Organize a talk Ask an accomplished woman to speak to an audience about her per- sonal or professional journey. Your speaker could come from any number of inspiring backgrounds: she might be a businesswoman, an athlete, a mother, an artist, an activist, a politician or a scientist, for example. 2. Collect funds Many non-profits do valuable work for women and girls. Choose a local organization and plan a fundraiser to help it finance its operations. Car washes, benefit dinners and bake sales are all tried-and-true options. 3. Educate yourself Do some research by reading a book or watching a film — documenta- ry or fiction — that focuses on women’s issues. Online, the National Film Board of Canada has a whole section dedi- cated to this type of production. 4. Say thanks Take advantage of the day to ex- press your love, admiration and appre- ciation for the women who play an im- portant role in your life. Send them a message, go visit them or give them a call to remind them how much they mean to you. And why not suggest they do the same? There are virtually endless possibil- ities when it comes to ways you can observe International Women’s Day. Tune into TVO tonight @ 8pm or 11pm ET Stream on tvo.org School boards in Dur-ham are moving quickly to implement asymptomatictesting directions from theprovince. The provincial govern- ment has told boards to of-fer asymptomatic testingfor at least five per cent ofschools weekly.Asymptomatic testing isvoluntary and parentalconsent is required for stu- dents under 18.Jim Wilson, a superin-tendent with the DurhamCatholic District School Board, says the board is co-ordinating with the Dur- ham District School Boardto offer testing through LifeLabs."The information will help refine our COVID-19protocols and allocation ofresources in order to en- sure that our schools re-main safe," he says.Details are still being fi-nalized, but Wilson says the plan is to offer testing toasymptomatic studentsand staff two evenings per week as well as Saturdays. The first day of testingwas slated for Saturday,Feb. 27 at Notre Dame Cath- olic Secondary School andJ. Clarke Richardson Colle-giate, both in Ajax.To meet the five per centtarget, Wilson says theDCDSB will need to offertesting for two or three schools per week. TheDDSB, which has a largerpopulation, will offer test-ing for a minimum of six to sevens schools per week. The local boards will work with the health de-partment to decide whichschools to conduct testingat based on data such as the number of COVID-19 casesin a specific area as well asthe per cent positivity rate. "We anticipate that test-ing will be offered to everyschool community at leastonce by the end of March, with a focus on geographi-cal areas with a greater in-cidence of COVID-19 cases," the DDSB said in a state-ment.The Peterborough Vic-toria Northumberland Cla- rington Catholic DistrictSchool Board had also setFeb. 27 as a tentative startdate for asymptomatic test- ing.The board, which in-cludes Catholic schools in Clarington, plans to startby offering testing at twoschools per week and ad-just from there based on de- mand and turnout.A board spokesperson said initial testing will like-ly take place at schools inClarington, "as this iswhere we have had the highest rates of COVID inschools."The Kawartha Pine Ridge District SchoolBoard, which includes pub-lic schools in Clarington, did not provide informa- tion on its asymptomatictesting plans.Board chair Diane Lloyd said in a statement thatplanning is ongoing."When finalized, we willwork directly with school communities, on a rotatingschedule, to provide themwith this voluntary testingopportunity," she said. Wilson says the DCDSBwill be encouraging par-ents to have their children tested, because it acts as an"important layer of protec-tion" and could also helpease any stress or anxiety that students have aboutthe virus. Asymptomatic schooltesting will use either poly-merase chain reaction(PCR) or rapid antigen tests. Statistics obtained bythe Toronto Star show theprovince's school testing program continues to re-port low numbers of CO-VID-19 cases. Of 3,706 tests conducted,32 new cases were found. The testing began in lateJanuary in Ottawa and Sudbury, and in FebruaryToronto, Peel and Hamilton began testing as well.In Toronto, testing washeld Feb. 11-13 for 40schools, with 917 tests com- pleted and 11 new casesfound. In Hamilton, testingdone Feb. 13 for two school sites, involving 86 people, found no cases.Another round conduct- ed Feb. 20 at one location, using both PCR and rapidtesting, found no casesamong the 37 rapid tests. – With files from TorstarNews Service. Pedestrian crossovershave special ladder-stylestripes that mark the cross-walk and marked yield bars showing where driversmust stop. Some have pushbuttons that activate flash-ing lights. They work well inareas where a full traffic sig-nal isn't needed, but pedes-trians need to safely cross the street. There are currently ninepedestrian crossovers in op-eration across Durham Re- gion. Pickering has three,Ajax and Uxbridge eachhave two, Clarington and Oshawa have one each. This year, Durham plansto install 11 additional pe-destrian crossovers throughout the region. Fourof the new crossovers willbe going in Oshawa, two in the north and two in thesouth of the city. Whitbywill get three new pedestri-an crossings, two in the north and one in the port ar-ea. Central Pickering couldget two new crossovers. There are also plans for anew crossover in centralAjax and one to be installed in Uxbridge.Construction on the new crossovers is scheduled tobegin this spring. It's part ofDurham Vision Zero initia- tive, a long-term, multi-agency plan to create saferroads for drivers, pedestri-ans and cyclists. Pedestrian crossoversare a new way for pedestri-ans to cross the road with- out stop signs or trafficlights. Some people — driv-ers and pedestrians — maybe unfamiliar with them. Here's a quick refresher onhow to use a pedestriancrossover: PEDESTRIANS 1. If there is a push but- ton, press it and wait for thelights to activate. 2. If there is no push but-ton, be sure to make eye con- tact with motorists beforestepping into the crossover. 3. Only cross the street when all vehicles — includ-ing cyclists — have come to a complete stop. DRIVERS 1. Watch for pedestrianswaiting at crossovers withspecial pavement marking and "stop for pedestrians"signage along with a yieldsign. 2. Drivers and cyclists must come to a full stop ifpedestrians are waiting tocross or lights are flashing. Drivers who do not stop forpedestrians can be fined ofup to $1,000 and lose four de-merit points. 3. Drivers and cyclistsmust remain stopped untilpedestrians have complete- ly cleared the crosswalk. COUGHLAN, Jeremiah (Jerry) Francis August 2, 1936 - February 24, 2021 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Jerry was a Master Builder and Visionary that changed the landscape of peoples' lives. Jerry passed peacefully, at home, on Wednesday, February 24, 2021. Jerry, the youngest of 11 children, was born in Arthur Township, Ontario. Jerry started early by helping his father and brothers in the home building business. Jerry proceeded to get his hoisting engineer's license, one of the accomplishments he was most proud of. He was given the name, by some of the builders of the time, "The Boy Builder" due to his young age. As Jerry's business grew, he became known for his quality buildings in Toronto, Durham, York, and Florida. The development of Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facility was the project Jerry enjoyed the most. Jerry was a natural athlete, an avid golfer and hockey player. He bragged to many about being one of the first Rink Rats at The East York Arena. He was also proud of being the skip for his curling team when they scored two eight enders. Jerry's endless stories of his days in Kinsmen, show his devotion to the club, and the lifelong friendships he built there. In the later years, Jerry became known for his phil- anthropy. He has given to the Salvation Army to help build a new food bank in Durham named "The Jerry Coughlan Community Services Centre," and to "Grandview Children's Centre", to help build a new facility in Ajax. He further provided funds to help build "The Jerry Coughlan Health and Wellness Centre", pres- ently being built on Brock Rd., in Pickering. Although Jerry never finished High School, his philanthropy was recognized with an Honorary Doctorate of Laws, from Trent University on May 30, 2019. Jerry was known for his strong work ethic, his visionary accomplishments, his strong business sense and his hum- ility. All of these earned him a well-known reputation for qual- ity and integrity. Buyers were proud to say they owned a Coughlan Home. Many a real estate listing bragged, "A Coughlan Built Home". Jerry's love of work and building was only surpassed by his love for people. He was happiest when there were friends aplenty in his presence. His friendships were dear to him, and usually lifelong. At every event, party, or after golf drink, Jerry loved to be in the middle. He would entertain a single person, or a crowd, with his amazing sense of humour. Jerry was filled with wisdom and love, and was happy to share both with anyone he met. Known to his friends, affectionately, as "Cougs" and respectfully by staff as "Mr. C" Jerry will be missed by all. Jerry has left behind his loving wife Lyn, and her two children Krystal, Brock, and his most loyal friend Rocky. Jerry was predeceased by his former wife, Lorraine. Together they have five children, John, Jan (Ken), Bev (Fred), Mary (Andrew), Paula (Christophe). He has fourteen grandchildren plus two step-grandchildren, Christopher, Teresa, Tyler, Cory, Rebecca, Andrea, Hali, John, Andrew, Cassandra, Brendan, Mathieu, Thomas, Virginia, Brandon, Brittany. Jerry also has 10 great-grand- children Nathan, Vivienne, Sawyer, Cameron, Colton, Beringer, Maeve, Owynn, Brayden and Brooks. In lieu of flowers, please give to the Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation, for "The Jerry Coughlan Health and Wellness Center". To register for the public visitation on Thursday, March 4, 2021 or to view the livestreaming of the private funeral services please visit Mr.Coughlan's memorial page on www.mceachniefuneral.ca Arrangements entrusted to McEachnie Funeral Home, 28 Old Kingston Road, Ajax, 905-428-8488. Just in your judgment, always right; honest and liberal, ever upright; loved by your friends and all whom you knew. Our wonderful friend – that person was you. The rolling stream of life rolls on. RAF Squadron Leader June 14, 1930 - February 24, 2021 ___________ John was born in Sussex, England, lived in the USA for a time then moved and became a proud Canadian. His greatest joy involved his career in the RAF prior to corporate flying with the Churchill Falls Labrador Corp. and later salesman with de Havilland Canada. He was a true gentleman who enjoyed hosting parties (especially lobster fests). His pleasures in earlier days were golfing, curling, travelling, photography and even camping. John was an avid reader, an aircraft / railway modeller, a TV control guardian, and a computer enthusiast. John was very conscious of proper English, the correct facts on historical and aviation information and he detested caps worn backwards. For ten years, John was the editor of Toronto's Aircrew Association newsletter before becoming president. While in the RAF, in 1959, he received a commendation for meritous service in Bomber Command. In 1969, he was mentioned in RAF dispatches whereupon he was honoured to wear an oak leaf. He also received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal through his work with the ACA. John leaves his wife Carol (Bonisteel), daughter Vicki (Peter) Craig and their children Stephen, Matthew and Alicia; son Chris (Michelle) and children Brooke, Tristan, Cassidy, Chelsey and great- grands Willow and Echo. He is remembered by Jean King the mother of his children, cousin Jenny in the UK, in-laws, cousins and friends. The support of Dr. Luigi Pedretti and the wonderful PSWs (especially Kamisha) was greatly appreciated. In John's memory, a donation to the Hearth Place Cancer Support Centre, 86 Colborne St. W., Oshawa, L1G 1L7 would be appreciated, and do kind deeds as our Pickering neighbours have done for us.
