She received an email inearly January stating that in order to comply withbather requirements as perthe Region of Durham —showers are necessary for pool users — lane and openswim will be available ex-clusively at Dunbarton In-door Pool (located at Dun-barton High School) andthe CHDRC pool will beclosed. It said the change will bein effect until the grand re-opening of the CHDRC, an-ticipated for December, and the timeline is subject to change."Say you have to close it for three or four months, Ican understand that," Ur-quhart said. "But a year(and maybe) plus?" Jody Morris, managerof facility programs andadministration, con- firmed: "We are hoping to(get) everything finishedby the early winter but re-ally anything can happen to slow down the process."She said the changerooms were gutted withinthe first couple of weeks, indicating progress is un-derway. Urquhart remembers when the Dunbarton poolclosed for many months in2016 for renovations. Swim-mers went to the rec com- plex instead, making it dif- ficult for regulars to secure lane times. She said there should bea way to keep at least onechange room open at a time while the others are being renovated. Coleman said staff triedto find a workaround butit's impossible because ev-erything, such as plumbing and electricity, is connect- ed in the change rooms.Coleman said member- ships were put on hold dur-ing lockdown and thosewho do not wish to swim atDunbarton can continue their holds."Dunbarton is like theforgotten pool," Coleman said. "There is definitely aDunbarton group of swim-mers and the rec complexgroup of swimmers." Since Dunbarton stu-dents are not using the poolthis year, it's exclusivelyavailable to Pickering swim members.Urquhart has no plansto jump ship, not only be- cause the rec complex isjust a walk away."I don't consider a highschool pool part of the rec- reation facilities of the city," she said. She said Pickering needs more recreation fa-cilities.Morris said there will bea new recreation centre in the Seaton neighbourhood, and the size and details arestill in the works. STORY BEHIND THESTORY:After Durham-region.com wrote about the City of Pickering's plansfor a new and improvedrecreation complex, thenewsroom learned about the pool closure and choseto share it with readers. It's about trust. Our rela- tionship with our readers isbuilt on transparency, hon-esty and integrity. As such,we have launched a trust ini- tiative to tell you who we areand how and why we do what we do. This article ispart of that project. There are not many things that have been morefrustrating than watchingthe slow rollout of vaccinesacross Canada. It likely does not helpthat our neighbours to thesouth are administering more vaccines a day thanCanada has administered intotal. For many of us, thequestion is: when is it our turn? The good news? Vaccinerollout is expected to signif-icantly increase across Can-ada moving forward. And itcan't happen soon enough. The past year has been among the most difficult wehave faced. We miss taking in a Gens'game or enjoying a night out at a local restaurant. Wemiss spending a Sunday af- ternoon at the movie thea-tre. Or watching our chil-dren play a game of soccer. Or going into stores to justbrowse. Kids miss sleepovers. Wemiss family dinners. Many of us long to goback to the way things werepre-COVID. Vaccines are the key step to that day. Which is where we comein. At the end of the day, all anyone really wants toknow is: how many peoplehave been vaccinated andwhen is it my turn? While we can't speed upthe process, we can let youknow how public health of- ficials are doing in the raceto vaccinate all Canadians. Our Vaccine Tracker cannow be found online at dur- hamregion.com. It allowsyou to see how many doses have been administered inDurham Region and howmuch farther we have to go before everyone receives adose. This isn't easy. Our reporter responsible for this tracker has hadmany frustrating days put-ting this together. We first went live withthe tracker back in late Jan-uary, but then there was adelay in Canada receiving vaccines. With new dosesexpected to come into Cana-da over the next few weeks, the spotlight will once again turn to how we are doing onthe vaccination front. The second challenge has been that LakeridgeHealth, the main organiza-tion responsible for dispens-ing vaccines, does not have this information readilyavailable. They do their best in providing us with whatthey can, when they can.But it's not consistent. Our hope is that Dur-ham's health departmentand/or the ministry ofhealth begins to make this information publicly avail-able on a regular basis. For now, they haven't. And it's fallen to us to do so. MIKE LACEY Column Friends of a Pickering woman who died after along battle with ALS havecreated a GoFundMe cam- paign to help her family.Jenny Blondin was di-agnosed with ALS (amyo-trophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig'sdisease) in 2009 and died onDec. 31, 2020 after an 11-yearbattle. Friends rallied behindBlondin in 2009 when sheunderwent treatment in Tel Aviv, Israel. Now, theyhope to support her hus-band and four children."Her struggle with this horrific disease had a hugefinancial impact on herfamily and they really need the help of the communi-ty," family friend KarenPritchard said in an email. Pritchard and herdaughter Megan Taylorstarted the campaign. They said it would beBlondin's greatest wishesthat her husband and her children can continue liv-ing in the house the chil-dren grew up in, and to start an education fund forthe youngest children.Pritchard said Blondin's husband Rob Blondinworks full time, raised thefour kids and looked after Jenny, all with a smile onhis face. "We graciously ask you to help out this wonderfulfamily in their time ofneed," Pritchard and Tay-lor wrote. As of Feb. 16, the cam-paign had raised around$31,000 toward the $50,000 goal.On top of mother andwife, Blondin was de-scribed as a beautiful, vi- brant and athletic pediat-ric and NICU nurse. In2009, she was recognizedwith the Miss Jean S. Tay-lor Award for Excellencein Pediatric Nursing.Beginning around the same time, ALS quicklyrobbed Blondin of all con-trol of her body movementwith the exception of her eyes. The fatal neurode-generative disease sparesthe mind, but destroys a person's ability to move, eat and breathe. Blondin spent the last few years of her life in ahospital bed in the livingroom of her home. "It was with her beauti- ful, bright eyes that shewas able to continue tocommunicate with her family and remain theirdriving force," Pritchardand Taylor wrote. "Jennyaccepted her diagnosis with courage. For parents like BrandiHenry, new data that shows the Durham DistrictSchool Board's Black stu-dents are faring worse aca-demically than their class-mates of other races is notsurprising. "It makes me sad," she says. "But not really sur-prised."Henry, who is Black, isthe mom of two children who both experiencedchallenges in the public ed-ucation system. It's why the Pickeringmom has home-schooledfor the past five years. She says her children — a daughter, nine, and a son,13 — both faced "subtle rac-ism" at school, which Hen- ry believes affected theirself-esteem and academicachievement. "Every teacher they had was white. Every singleone. And I'm not sayingthese teachers are setting out to do harm to Blackkids on purpose. But therewere biases, definitely."Henry says she started to see alarming patternsdeveloping, like her son be-ing sent to the office fre- quently — sometimes daily—for the same kinds of in-fractions that landed otherstudents a verbal repri- mand from the teacher. "Here he was, six yearsold, and starting to feel likehe's a bad kid," Henry says. She had read about dis-proportionate suspensionand expulsion rates for Black students and gaps inachievement and began toworry that the public edu-cation system doesn't work for many Black families. So she pulled them out."And I still think it was the right choice," Henrysays. "I feel like school wastearing them down and ...at home I can build them up."Other Black parentswho spoke to Durhamre- gion.com for this storyshared similar concernsand experiences. The DDSB recently re- leased an analysis of thedata gathered from its firststudents census conducted in 2019. It compares aca-demic outcomes for sever-al identities, including acomparison of white, Black and South Asian students. "This data shows thatour system imposes barri- ers that disproportionatelyand negatively impact stu-dents who identify asBlack," said Jonelle Mitch- ell, a member of the board'sstudent census develop-ment team, speaking at theDDSB's Feb. 16 board meet-ing. Cheryl Rock, chair ofthe Durham Black Educa- tors Network, has heardfrom students who tell herthey experience gaps interms of the expectations educators have of them, the leadership opportuni-ties available to them and the ability to have "voiceand choice" in their learn-ing."Educators have to have an awareness of how anti-Black racism happenswithin different spaces, and we have to be able toidentify, disrupt and dis-mantle it," says Rock, not-ing that the new data is a positive step. "If we don'tknow where the barriersare, we can't be more pre-cise and responsive in ad-dressing them."People close to the issue say systemic racism, im-plicit bias and gaps in ex-pectations all play a role inthe achievement gap the data captures."The reality is thatBlack students feel disen- gaged and disconnected inour schools because of alack of recognition of sys-temic racism which they continue to experience,"reads an excerpt from theDDSB's Compendium of Action for Black StudentSuccess, a three-year planreleased in 2018. "In addi-tion, parents and families of Black students voicefrustration that their chil-dren continue to experi-ence low teacher expecta-tions and low academicperformance, high rates of suspension and discrimi-nation in pathways plan-ning."Dr. Robyn Ruttenberg- Rozen, an assistant profes-sor with the faculty of edu-cation at Ontario Tech Uni- versity in Oshawa, says im-plicit bias is a concern infields like education wherepeople are making quick decisions."The two professionsmost prone to implicit bias are teaching and nursingbecause they work soquickly. These are in-the-moment responses," she says. "It's not about inten-tions, it's about impact. No-body has the intention to do something wrong. Butthe impacts are far-reach-ing and they hurt people for generations."When the DDSB startedoffering kindergartenteachers anti-black racism training in 2019, JacquiSteer, the board's equityexecutive co-ordinator, ex- plained that when it comesto teaching, bias can besubtle, showing up in toneof voice or body language. "We all have biases —that's something that weall live with," she said. "We may be unaware of howwe're perceiving someonefrom a particular race or aparticular culture." Thank You for Doing Your Part! Katherine Ross, Waste Management Technician for the Region of Durham talks everything Waste. Send your waste related questions or comments to waste@durham.ca If you require this information in an accessible format, please call 1-800-667-5671 •durham.ca/waste Mixed Waste Pre-sort and Anaerobic Digestion Facility The Region continues to work toward developing a Mixed Waste Pre-sort and Anaerobic Digestion Facility as per the Council approved direction for the Region’s Long-term organics management solution. Currently, staff are in the process of evaluating Requests for Pre-Qualifications received to design, build, operate and maintain the Mixed Waste Pre-sort and Anerobic Digestion Facility. The Mixed Waste Pre-sort (MWP) component of the facility will remove materials—such as food scraps and recyclables—from garbage collected at the curb and from multi-residential buildings. This will not replace or eliminate the current Green Bin or Blue Box programs. Instead, the MWP will sort out organics and recyclables from the garbage bags that were not put where they should be, in the green bin or blue box. This will help Durham maximize diversion efforts. Anerobic Digestion (AD) is a natural process that uses microbes found in the environment to break down waste in the absence of oxygen. This process naturally produces methane, which can be collected and cleaned for use as a renewable natural gas; essentially converting organic materials, such as food scraps, into a renewable energy source that can offset the use of fossil fuel. The Region has created a new animated video that shows how AD works, watch it at durham.ca/ADProject. Also, by sending this material for diversion we will reduce the amount of waste that is currently being processed at the Durham York Energy Centre (DYEC) and help delay the need for expansion of our energy-from-waste facility. There is no combustion involved in the AD process and therefore, there will be no stack emissions released from this facility. Like the DYEC operations, all MWP and AD operations will be conducted indoors with strict odour control measures in place. The DYEC employs several control measures to minimize odour from waste handling operations. Similar controls will be used at the MWP and AD facility. These controls include: • No outdoor storage of waste; • Minimize queuing of trucks on-site by scheduling deliveries; • Require waste delivery trucks to be tarped when entering and exiting the site; • Maintain negative air pressure on the waste tipping floor; and • Tipping floor doors remain closed except when vehicles enter or leave the facility. • Additionally, the MWP and AD facility will have a biofilter that uses microorganisms to eliminate odour causing elements. These control measures have proven to be effective odour management practices at the DYEC. No odour complaints for the area have been attributed to DYEC operations. Odour management requirements will also be included in the Environmental Compliance Approval for the AD Facility. The new AD facility will be located next to the DYEC in the Energy Park in Clarington and will only accept waste from Durham Region. By converting Durham’s waste into renewable natural gas, a valuable resource and renewable energy, and digestate or compost-like product the AD facility will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate local economic benefits. Learn more about this project or check out our new animated video at durham.ca/ADProject. David Wright, theboard's associate directorof corporate services, saidthe DDSB is looking at op- tions for improving airquality in schools — butnoted HEPA (high efficien- cy particulate air) filtersare not a good fit."Unfortunately, whenschool heating and venti- lation systems were in-stalled, they really weren'tinstalled with HEPA fil-ters in mind," he told trust-ees at the Feb. 16 boardmeeting. "The units aren'tdesigned to push air through that level of filtra-tion."Wright said the board islooking into installing fil- ters with a "significantlyhigher" MERV (minimum efficiency reporting val-ue) level of 13, as opposedto the standard MERV 7. It would cost about$600,000 to put MERV 13 fil-ters in all heating and ven-tilation systems across the board. Some of the new fund-ing for air quality will also go to duct cleaning andbuying air purifiers withHEPA filters for use inclassrooms, adding to the stock of about 150 theboard has so far. Trevor apprenticed under his father as a Model and Pattern Maker for the British Railway. On December 31, 1955, he married his lifelong sweetheart, Margaret Evelyn Lewis. They raised three children, Ian, and twins, Carol and Lynn. In 1967, the family emigrated to Canada and they settled in the community of Bay Ridges (Pickering) in 1968. Trevor started his own business, Vari-Crafts as a Model and Pattern Maker for the aero space and auto making industry. He built full size, articulated models for Dowty and the Challenger Jet. His full-size model of the landing gear was on display to rave reviews at the Paris Air Show for it's precision and impression that is was a metal landing gear, although it was completely made from wood. Trevor and Margaret moved to Uxbridge in 1985 and built their home on a park-like setting on Wagg Road. Trevor enjoyed working on their extensive vegetable and flower gardens. as well as their ponds and walking paths. Trevor's fine craftmanship was seen throughout their property both inside and outside the house. Trevor was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2012 and in 2017 he became a part of the Reachview Village LTC family. Our deepest thank you to all the staff at Reachview Village LTC, their care and compassion was exemplary. OBITUARIES | REMEMBERING THE LIVES OF THOSE IN OUR COMMUNITY Gone is the face we loved so dear, silent is the voice we loved to hear; too far away for sight or speech, but not too far for thought to reach, sweet to remember you who once was here, and who, though absent, is just as dear. In my heart your memory lingers, always tender, fond and true; there’s not a day, dear friend, I do not think of you. Time may heal the broken-hearted, time may make the wound less sore; but time will never stop the longing for the loved one gone before. May the winds of love blow softly and whisper so you’ll hear. 1-800-263-6480 classifieds@metroland.comCLASSIFIEDSOBITUARIES | ANNOUNCEMENTS | JOBS | MARKETPLACE dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m New s A d v e r t i s e r | Th u r s d a y , F e b r u a r y 2 5 , 2 0 2 1 | 18 WE PAY $250 - $6000 for your scrap cars, SUVs, vans & trucks.
