But this year we are making abreak from that tradition - we're looking to the past.Starting last week, the Picker-ing News Advertiser returned to its previous front-page banner. We made the move in responseto suggestions from our readersand our staff that the previous banner reflects the individualityand history of The PickeringNews Advertiser and its unique connection to our community. The change is intended to re-flect our commitment to recog-nize the unique individuality of each of our community newspa-pers and their correspondingwebsite and in turn the commu- nities that they serve. By returning to the previousbanner, this move also pays trib-ute to the heritage of The Picker- ing News Advertiser. We hope you like the new (old)look.Sincerely, Paul Rivett and Jordan BitoveCo-Proprietors Torstar Corporation A LETTER TO OUR READERS dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m Pic k e r i n g N e w s A d v e r t i s e r | P | T h u r s d a y , J a n u a r y 2 1 , 2 0 2 1 | 4 Upcoming Public Meetings Date Meeting/Location Time January25 CouncilMeeting Forlocationandmeetingdetailscheck: https://calendar.pickering.ca/council 7:00pm January27 HeritagePickeringAdvisory Committee Forlocationandmeetingdetailscheck: https://calendar.pickering.ca/council 7:00pm January28 PickeringLibaryBoard Forlocationandmeetingdetailscheck: www.pickeringlibrary.ca/board 7:00pm COVID-19CityResponse Visitpickering.ca/COVID19foralistofopenfacilities,limited servicesavailableforin-personappointments,andhealth andsafetyexpectationswhenvisitingaCityfacility. With a neighbourhoodon edge after two shootingsand an arson, Durham Re- gional Police were out inforce on Jan. 13, hopingtheir presence will calmdown the area. Police officers wentdoor-to-door on GambleDrive and surrounding streets to canvass and reas-sure residents.Inspector Mitch Martinof the DRPS West Division said of the canvass, "We'relooking for more evidence. We're talking to the neigh-bours and (seeking) video that exists that we're un-aware of, anything theymight have seen that we're unaware of."The second thing is, wewant the community to beaware that we care, that we're out here showing ourpresence. We're lettingthem know what has truth- fully happened, becausethere are rumours swirlingaround and just hoping ourpresence just helps calm things down," Martin add-ed. Detective-ConstableDarrell MacIver talked withone resident who was clear- ly upset about the recent in-cidents."Ask them to go live somewhere else. We don'tcare. They don't care aboutbringing garbage into ourneighbourhood," said the woman, who was cryingand shouting. Her home is just down the street from the housethat was shot at twice infour days. The officer said, "We're doing what we can. Whatwere doing now is to resolve the issue."When the woman askedwhat the police were doing to stop future incidentsfrom happening, MacIversaid, "We're doing that right now. We're doing every-thing in our powers to pre-vent this from happeningagain and to solve the issue. That's why we're going doorto door, to gather as muchevidence, as much informa- tion possible, so this doesnot happen again."Police couldn't providethe resident with any infor- mation, such as who mighthave committed the crime. "There's a dedicatedteam of investigators; this isour only job," MacIver add-ed. He couldn't answer herquestions while the investi-gation is underway. Other residents on thestreet refused to answerquestions about the situa-tion. The first incident hap-pened on Jan. 7 at about12:10 a.m. when a house on Gamble was strafed withgunshots. The same housewas targeted again on Jan.10 at 10:50 p.m. In the second incident, one bullet wentthrough a house and thenentered a neighbouringhouse behind the target. On Friday, Jan. 8 atabout 6 a.m. a tow truck wastorched on Gamble. Ward 2 Regional Coun-cillor Sterling Lee was visit-ing a resident who hadcalled him after the second attack."I still truly believe northAjax is a safe place to live. We shouldn't let the rougeactions of other people af-fect the faith people have intheir community," Lee said. He spoke with a residentwho has lived in her house for 10 years and nothing likethis has ever happened."This is an anomaly. It'snot par for the course. It isn't what this neighbour-hood or area represents,"Lee added. Investigators don't be-lieve the arson and theshootings are related, Mar-tin said. "The coincidence of thatcrime occurring in thesame neighbourhood israre. But, there's nothing toindicate they are related,"Martin noted.Crime analysts studied the neighbourhood and"this is a very safe neigh-bourhood. There have beenafew instances in the past few years. I'm talking two orthree calls for service....This type of crime is incred- ibly unusual for this neigh-bourhood," the inspectoradded.Officers under Martin's command are aware the ar-ea has to be patrolled moreoften, he said. "They will be present totry to deter any morecrime," he said.Martin said some neigh- bours' properties have beenhit by bullets. POLICE CANVASS AJAX NEIGHBOURHOOD AFTER CRIMES KEITH GILLIGAN kgilligan@ durhamregion.com Durham Regional Police members canvassed the neighbourhood around Gamble Drive after two shootings and a tow truck was set on fire. Jason Liebregts/Metroland CRIME A Pickering councillorwho left the country for apersonal matter while On-tario was in lockdown has no plans to leave his role aschair of the Durham Re-gional Police Services Board.Ward 1 regional council-lor Kevin Ashe travelled to the Bahamas after Christ-mas in order to pay tributeto his late stepson. His an- nouncement came thesame day that OakvilleMayor Rob Burton steppeddown as chair of the Halton Police Board after he toldHalton Regional Police Ser-vices chief Stephen Tannerthat he could travel to Flor- ida over the holidays.Ashe has no plans to dothe same. "I will not be steppingdown," he said.In fact, Ashe hopes to bere-elected to the position. The board was scheduledto elect a chair and vice-chair at the Jan. 19 public meeting.Ashe's stepson, AlexMonaghan, died by suicide in 2018, and the family hasscattered his ashes in vari-ous places around the world, including the Baha-mas. Ashe said he and hiswife Karen O'Brien madethe trip to pay tribute to Monaghan."By and large, peopleunderstand the reasoningfor my decision and I'm fine with the decision I made,"he said.Ashe said he and O'Bri- en took three privatelypaid COVID-19 tests and allwere negative.Durham Regional Chair John Henry, who also sitson the board, said helearned about Ashe's trip to the Bahamas throughmedia reports."I'm disappointed and I was disappointed to findout in the way I found out,"he said. "As elected offi-cials (we know we're) beingheld to a higher level."Ashe is one of two mem-bers of Durham Regional Council who admitted totravelling out of the coun-try over the holidays, whileOntario was in lockdown. Pickering Ward 2 regionalcouncillor Bill McLeanflew to Costa Rica with his wife regarding renovationsto their condominium.Henry said Ashe hasdone a great job as chair of the board, but set a bad ex-ample by traveling duringthe lockdown in what he sees as Canada's greatestchallenge since the SecondWorld War. "It will be interesting tosee what happens at the board meeting," he said. "Idon't know where it's goingto go as of yet."But he did say he has heard concerns overAshe's decision to traveland "I have an expectation that we will do our best tolive up to that higher stan-dard." Addressing COVID-19 inlong-term-care homes the second time around re-quires more than relyingon the rollout of the vac-cine, critics say. "As we're looking at vac-cinations, we need to havereally urgent protocols toensure that our vulnerableseniors are first priority,"said Oshawa MPP JenniferFrench. "But that said, vac- cination in and of itselfshould not be the onlystrategy to (protect them)."Vivian Stamatopoulos, an associate teaching pro-fessor at Ontario Tech Uni-versity who specializes in family caregiving, said fo-cusing on the vaccine roll-out as "the saviour to thewoes of long-term care is completely unacceptable,"as many other areas needattention. As of Jan. 15, there were21 ongoing outbreaks in Durham LTC homes, re-tirement homes and hospi-tals. This included a cur-rent case at the Orchard Villa retirement home inPickering, which shares abuilding with the long- term-care home. Seventy-eight Orchard Villa resi-dents died from COVID-19in the first wave. A representative hassaid in the past OrchardVilla has prepared for thesecond wave, but could notbe reached for comment forthis story."It's a giant mess," Sta- matopoulos said of the cur-rent long-term-care situa-tion in Ontario. She said infection pre- vention control managersin each home and properinspections are needed in each home, and staffinglevels must be reportedpublicly and in real time."When you see the num- bers are dipping, then youknow (an outbreak is start-ing)," she said. Pickering-UxbridgeMPP Peter Bethlenfalvy said in an email he under-stands "virtually all resi-dents in long-term-carehomes in Durham Region have received their first CO-VID-19 vaccination dose."He said the province continues to "protect ourmost vulnerable, as well asthe staff who have beenworking tirelessly to keep residents safe."He said the provincialgovernment has taken ur- gent action to address staff-ing, including issuing man-agement orders and en-abling the deployment of hospital staff and the use ofinfection prevention andcontrol teams. He added Ontario is in- vesting an additional $398million during the secondwave to support further prevention and contain-ment efforts in all OntarioLTC homes."It will help homes ad- here to strict staff and visi-tor COVID-19 testing, so therisk of the virus entering long-term-care homesfrom the community is re-duced," he said. "This newinvestment brings Onta- rio's total funding to pro-tect long-term-care homessince the start of the CO- VID-19 pandemic to $1.38billion." French and Stamato- poulos both feel more andappropriate staffing isneeded. "Thanking them is notsufficient," French said."Hiring them, paying them and protecting them will get us closer to where weneed to be."They need paid sick days, fair wages and full-time hours, she said.Stamatopoulos said the military should be de-ployed to homes in needonce again."Red Cross teams are not enough," she said. French said it's neces-sary to use aids, including the Canadian Red Cross, but more importantly, themilitary, not only for themedical expertise, but for the accountability itbrings."The Red Cross is not go- ing to write a damning re-port on them," she said.Pickering Ward 1 cityCoun. Maurice Brenner in- tends to introduce a motionat the next council meetingonce again demanding forimmediate change in Onta- rio's LTC homes."I think we could be andwe should be doing more and the people being im-pacted, they don't havevoices right now," he said."They rely on every level of government to be thatvoice and that's why I'm notabout to let it go." STORY BEHIND THESTORY: Orchard Villa inPickering was hit hard in the first wave of COVID-19and durhamregion.comspoke to those invested in the matter about theirthoughts on the currentsituation. She almost reached her next life goal of celebrating her 103rd birthday on April 28th. She was both proud of and somewhat amazed with her age. We credit her longevity to no nonsense, clean living, and her routine afternoon nap. Cherished wife of William V. Jarrett (predeceased 1998) for 59 years. Most loved Mother of Robert (Carleen) of Brooklin, Virginia Ann (Aurèle) of Markdale, David (Shirley) of Fort Erie, Linda (Douglas) of Pickering. Proud grandmother of Paul (Liz), Laurie (Louis), Leeanne, Melanie (Perry), Scott (Misako), Stephen (Lori), Stephannie, Christopher, Alysha (Ben) and Dylan (Andra). Delighted great grandmother of Brendan, Kieran, Evan, Teagan, Brook, Paulina, Sia, Brooke, Tyler, Rush, Emma, Mia, Lea, Leif. Virginia was born in 1918 in Stamford, Connecticut. She came to Canada as a young child with her Father and resided in Hamilton, Ontario and later in Dundas, Ontario. She was a graduate of Westdale Secondary School in Hamilton and worked as a stenographer at Stelco in the medical department. She then chose to be a stay-at-home Mom to devote her attention to her family. Virginia was an accomplished seamstress and a wonderful cook. She handcrafted clothing for the family, square dance dresses for herself, and baked family favourites such as the best butter tarts and lemon meringue pies. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting and needle point. Later in life she developed an interest in art appreciation. She supported William (Bill) in all his musical endeavors, choir and solo appearances, Hamilton Theatre Company, the Harlequin Singers, Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas, and Geritol Follies. During their retirement years, Virginia and Bill enjoyed walking, square dancing, ballroom dancing, theatre, the philharmonic, and became world travellers. While Virginia was a quiet personality, she had a subtle sense of humour, surprising wit, and demonstrated patience and understanding. Virginia was an only child who grew to be an awesome role model for all her family members. Due to COVID 19 - the family will plan a Celebration of Life once safe gatherings are allowed. If you wish to do something in Virginia's memory consider a donation to: https://www.canadahelps.org/e n/charities/ajax-pickering- hospital-foundation/ mental health program. Mom was a beloved wife and best friend of 55 years to Dad, the late Albert Baxter Saunders (2002). She was a devoted and loving mother of Roxanne (Alexander) Reynolds of Ajax, Ontario and David (Susan) Saunders of Pickering, Ontario as well as cherished grandmother of Alyssa and Kirk Reynolds of Ajax, Ontario. Predeceased for many years by her sister Thelma (Hugh) Lacey and brothers Eric and Agustus (Gladys) Noftle. As the late matriarch of the family, Mom will be fondly remembered by special nieces, nephews and their families. She will be dearly missed by her extended family and many friends she has come to know during her lifetime in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and more recently Ontario. Throughout Mom's life, she thoroughly enjoyed gardening, baking, knitting, sewing, traveling and was happiest whilst doing for others. She loved a good game of scrabble or cards and of course was always willing to go to the casino to try her luck on the slot machines. Mom's laughter and loving supporting nature will forever be remembered. Special thanks to the caregivers from Paramed, Comfort Keepers and staff of Lakeridge Unit - Winbourne Park LTC Centre, for their care and compassion during the last years of Mom's life. As per Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place. In light of the pandemic environment we are unable to hold a memorial service, however, ask that you each celebrate and remember Mom's life in your own special way. A family committal service in Nova Scotia will take place at a later date. If desired, as an expression of sympathy, donations made to The Canadian Cancer Society, The Heart & Stroke Foundation or The Alzheimer Society would be sincerely appreciated by the family. Arrangements have been made through The Simple Alternative Funeral Home, 1057 Brock Road, Pickering, Ontario, L1W 3T7 and online condolences may be made at www.etouch.ca.
