The proposed route for the Gardiner
Expressway will apparently slash right
throu,Yh the heart of 'Jest Rouge. The
official map from which this is taken
Is a `',carboro one, so it does not re-
veal the course the road takes east of
the Town Line. The obvious intention
Is to have it merge with 401 at some -
point between the Cloverleaf and the
Rouge 731ver.

AROUND TO'.IN WITH PIERRE TUMPANE
Our new water tank will sure be a
landmark. You can see it for miles
in every direction. I hope it doesn't
leak as I am sure our local Variety
Store wouldn't have a big enough plug
for it.
Rumour has it that our Community
Association will hold.a meeting to dis-
cuss taxes. I wish them luck1l My
grandfather used to say "Death and
Taxes are inevitable". Did you notice
how many "FOR SALE" signs went up
immediately after the tax bills were
sent out.
Let's hope our Roads Department do
as good a j9b this year keeping our
roads ploughed of snow as they did
last year. Some of the roads I've been
on lately felt as if they were ploughed
already only this time they used a
farmer's type field plough.
Alan Lamport will definitely not run
against Reeve S. Herman Scott in the
Pickering 11unicipal election this year.

As a gallant young don when the big
war was on
I went over to battle the Axis,
But when I came back to live in 'Vest

All I fight in this place is the taxes.
I'm a salaried man, *r e does what he
can
I'm surely not loaded with coney,
But the bite they take out when the
tax bill comes out
Is anything, I think, except funny.
To live in ;'lest Rouge is a privilege

A thought with which I'm agreeing;
But I cannot see why they soak us so

with a sign

And long to escape to a balmier clime
Where taxes are not quite so biting.
I could fro on with this rhyme for

LETTE115 TO THE f-'1-ITOR
,!"Ir Sir.: Our elected representativE
say school costs are making our taxes
so high. The answer to high taxes
seems to be to cut the cost of school
operation. The cost of desks, black-
boards, lights, equipment etc. are
fairly standard. There is no quibble
about teacherst salaries, janitorial
services or school supplies costs.
The high cost seems to be in the
actual building construction. -Nhat
can be so expensive about a common
cement block building? 'Aiy did it
take them so long to build it? Did
you ever notice hors long it takes a
contractor to build a cement block
building for a Canadian Tire Store
for example? The project is com-
pleted and occupied before the
cement is hardened. Can someone
volunteer the answers?
G.W.
!:)ear Sir: I have been visiting a
friend who recently bought a home
in "Kind City" near Maple, Ont. He
was complaining that his taxes had
,jumped from MO to a 180 because of
a. new public and a now hir;l, school.
My taxes for a similar home in ',;cyst
Rouge are more than double lits.
Both houses (his & mine) are on
residential streets on 50 foot lots
serviced with water only. His street
like mine is unpaved. He has garbage
collection once a week and other
services are about the same.
The question I would like someone
to answer is ... quote .. 11,Y7iat the
--- an, I getting for my tax money??
14. Riled Up
Dear Sir: I should like to know
whether other 'Test Rouge residents
find the fumes from the Johns -Manville
plant as obnoxious as I do. I have
complained to the Company about this
on several occasions as I understand
they have the means to keep it under
control. Perhaps the Association
can register a more effective protest
if others feel the same way about
this.

',Pest Rouge on the whole is a warm
hearted community ready to help
wherever it is needed through
local organizations or personally.
An example of this was when Mrs.
Brown, Fast Ave. asked for Blood
Donors for her two year old son
who has Hemophillia. Mrs. Brown could
not believe the response of our local
citizens who wished to help. Also,
Mr. and Mrs. McMullen, Sunnyslope,
felt the warmth of the whole commun-
ity when their six year old son Robin
was so seriously ill following an
accident in the summer.
They say Charity is cold but
a kind deed, a warm smile or a word
of comfort when needed could hardly
be called cold and costs so little.
. Remember it is always darkest
before the dawn, the tall oak tree
was once a little nut and two things
are for sure - death and taxes. Time
waits for no man so count your
blessings and do be thankful.

This is our first nens column

the area, and we hope, with the

activities are taking place.
During the summer just ended,
three sporting activities were
prov_:.,'.ed for the children, namely
volleyball for the girls, and
baseball and soccer for the boys.
Vn r.L,,`rizALL - ','Ie had approx.
90 girls registered, and a house
league was formed with 8 teams.
PA "ALL - :'Je had approx.
12.0 boys registered. This gave
us a house league of 6 teams, and
also a Pee '.`:iee and a "antam team
In the Pickering Township League.
The Bantams came first in their
league and won the play-of.fsl
'0.7GGJ3 - `:!ith a registration
of 60 boys, we entered. 3 teams in
the Fast End Division of the P.Y.C.
Soccer League.
Now vie are starting on hockey
and with a registration to date of
approximately 11O boys, the Hockey
Committee is expecting; a busy
season. The League ivIll operate
at Heron Park, ';Jest Hill, again
this year from 3-6 p.m. on
Saturday afternoons. This is
considered a more suitable time
than the Friday night deal of last
year. An effort to get inside ice
time at ';Ihitby Arena, failed this
year, but will be a must for next
year. The hockey is expected to
start about the middle of
November depending; on the weather.
There will again be 8 tems, 4 of
the older b-)ys and 1 of the
younger ones. A Pantam team will
also be formed to give boys over
the house league age limit a
chance to play, and this will be
entered in a yet unconfirmed
outside league.
All the above activities, of
course need money to run, and so
we come to the part where 2V1,,RYPODY
In the :est Rouge can help, whether
they be 9 or 90. .'.e do not solicit
