PRESIDENT'S MES:AGE
It is a privilege for me in this first issue of the West Rouge
News letter to acquaint all residents, new and old, with the purp-
ose of the Community Association and an outline of the work it has
done in the past. At the same time it is an opportunity to interest
;'everybody in joining the Association and participating in its
activities.
The constitution of the Association (formed over eight years ago)
is reads in part:
(a) To represent the interests of the residents and property own -
ers of the area in matters administered by council or other governing
bodies.
(b) To promote neighbourliness in the community by sponsoring
social activities.
The Association kas been directly or in part responsible for
!`many improvements including the West Rouge Zoning Bylaw, our water
"system, subdivision control plus a watchful eye on Council and School
;Board matters. Socially the Association sponsors an annual New Year's;
,Dance, and the twelfth night Christmas tree burning.
This is your Association, yours and mine. Let's make it strong.
If not a member, send in your name and address with $1.00.See page 4.
Yours for a finer and friendlier community.
Bob Stewart

Hall, Wednesday December 2nd, at 8:p.m.

NAME YOUR BULLETIN
We're in a quandary. We need a good name for your bulletin. It
should be something original. Therefore, we ask you, the reader
to send in your ideas. Your prize? - the satisfaction of being
the person who gave the bulletin of West Rouge its name.

THE KIWANIS CLUB OF WEST ROUGE
The members of the Kiwa.nis Club
are men with only one common
distinction:
We are extremely proud of
the people who make up the West
Rouge neighbourhood.
To -day we are grateful for
this opportunity of expressing
ourselves to them.
Our first message is one of
congratulations to the Community
association for sponsoring this
publication and selecting Dick
Jclliffe to be the guiding hani.
Dick is competently assisted
by Anne Henson, Betty McClelland
Jim Pownall, Stanley Frost, Tom
McKay and Bob Stewart, Dean
Charters and Winnie Fraser.
We join with the community
in anticipation of a long series
of successful issues.
MEET YOUR 6 AND IDATE S
What promises to be a lively
election meeting is in store for Wept
Rouge next Wednesday evening. All
candidates for Council and School
Board have been invited to present
their stand and to face questions
from the floor.
At the time of writing no one
has yet challenged our own Sherman
Scott for the office of Reeve. A
real battle is shaping up between
Deputy -Reeve Mrs. McPherson and
louncillor Ross Hawthorne. Our ward
5 has been represented by Violet Swan
from the other side of the river, and
there are rumors that a West Rouge
man will challenge her.
Your fommunity Assn. is a non-
political organization, but it must
fight for the interests of West Rouge.
Any observer of Council in the past
year knows that some of its members
are not kindly disposed towards us.
It's time that we a.11 took a more
active part in guarding our own
interests.

INTERS TO THE EDITOR
The editor invites contributions
to this column.
Dear Mr. Editor:
It occurred to me that your
readers might be interested in a
newcomer's impressions of our
community.
I like West Rouge. I like it
because it differs from so many of
the sub -divisions that have mush-
roomed up around our Canadian cities.
Here we have not flat treeless
plain dotted with row after row of
houses alike in design and appear-
ance, but a beautiful piece of
Ontario countryside into which a
variety of homes have been fitted.
The open spaces retained, the trees,
the hills and slopes, and the views
along with liberal sized lots and
entire absence of highway traffic
have, in spite of our modern shopp-
ir_, centre, preserved for us a feeling
of living in the country.
I like West Rouge because it is
a place by itself. It's like an
island tucked away in the extreme
southwest corner of Pickering town-
ship. With the lake on the south,
the Rouge on the east, highways on
the north, and the county boundary
on the west, we enjoy what the
planner calls a "sense of enclosure"
a very great asset in creating a
model planned community.
like West Rouge because while
a lonsiderable distance from the
city, it has admirable access to
highways east, west and north. The
Lans_ng Clover Leaf forms a spacious
and attractive approach.
A lot of good work has been done
here tut of course we are not
through. West Rouge needs an
official name; as yet we are not
really on the map. Patience and
perserve»canoe will be needed. Then
there are other facilities of which
your executive members are well
aware. :f we pull together, these
will come.
NEE POST BOXES
As we go to press, the new post
boxes are teing installed. Some of
us are not enthused about having to
walk possibly another hundred yards
for our mail, but the exercise will
do us good .
We must admit that the new boxes
present a much tidier appearance,
aNd it 's up to us to see that they
are kep; neat and orderly. Perhaps
our Assccia.tion might father a. little
landscaping around these units. A

CHURCH ACTIVITY AT WEST ROUGE
AROUND TOWN WITH J.P.
Many of the churches in or
near our district have been very
busy this fall preparing fo -rtheir
every -member canvasses which were
held on Stewardship Sunday, Nov. 151
As a result of this, canvass,
the members of the Presbyterian
Church, now meeting each Sunday
at the West Rouge and Centennial
Rd. Schools, hope to have their
own church building erected by this
time next year. They plan to
erect the church on four acres
of land recently purchased from
Mr. Thos . Goddard of the ownline .
Their new minister, Revi R. H.T.
Fulton, resides at 2 Brycemoor
Ave.,, the former residence of Dr..
Oxenha.m.
The community will be interested
to hear that an Anclican
congregation is being formed to
meet in St. ,Edward's Parish Hall
on East Ave.,. The first congrega-
tional meeting was held on Friday
Nov. .27th followed by an "old
fashioned" box social. At present
Sunday School services are held
there every Sunday a .m.. at 9:30.
The Inaugural Church Service will
be held on Sunday, Dec. 27th at
11 a.m. Future church services
are planned for one Sunday each
month at 9:30 a.m. and the rector
will be Rev. G.W. B. Wheeler of
St. Simon's Anglican church in
Highland Creek.
SCOUTS AND GUIDES
Through the facilities of
local churches, many children in
the district are able to attend
meetings of cubs, scouts, brownies
and guides. .
At Centennial United Church
located on the north side of
Highway #2 enroute to Highland
Creek, the Brownies and Girl
Guides meet on Tuesday nights at
7 P.m, There are two packs of
cubs, one meeting on Monday night
and the other on Wednesday nights
at 7 p.m. The Boy Scouts hold
their meetings on Thursday
evenings at 7:30.

Heh! What happened to that
beautiful sign on the south side of
Island Road which advertised the
virtues of our local golf club??
Maybe Deputy Reeve MacPherson didn't
do too much for our areathis year
but she did have her: road repair
crew knock that sign over.
That fat raise in our water rates
is paying for the water main that
services the Dairy Queen Store over
there on_old Highway #2. We in West
Rouge sh uld get free iqe cream, from
that pla ,e at least oni? a month in

We wouldn't be a bit she
if Metro Toronto vetoes the Commun-
ity Associations request to extend
the Bloor Subway down Island Road.
How many of us would patronize a
Railway Commuter Service if one was
established with stops at Port Union
and Ferguson's Beach??
Santa Claus must have lost his
shirt on the stock market or some-
thing, judging by the verse in the
first Christmas Card of the season.
It goes like this..

SCHOOL NEWS
Though the weatherman tried his
best to prevent'it, the West Rouge
Hockey Association finally got off
to a. flying start. On two success
ive Fridays, the inclemency of the
weather made Heron Park rink unfit
for hockey.
However, to president Cliff Lay -
Cox and the rest of the assn. ex-
ecutive this was just one more
Droblem that had to be overcome.
These civic minded gentlemen des-
erve a lot of credit. They've been
working night after night since
early July to get this thing on
the road. They have accomplished
much
This year, until they know the
calitre of the players they have;
there will be 8 Tyke teams in the
age group 7 - 13. Very solorful
lace-Ua sweaters have been dbhated
to the budding league b the fol-,
lowing concerns: Name-k-Statidn-
ery, 2 sets; Modern Motors, 2 sets;
Chesterhill Variety, 1 set; White
Real Estate, 1 set. The Ontario
Athletic Association has also don-
ated two complete goalie outfits
and 60 hockey sticks.
The Association is holding a
dance at the Heron Park Hall on
December 5th to raise funds to
keep the league solvent. They de-
serve yoar support. There will be
a buffet, bar and many door prizes.
Tickets are $2.25 per person. Lots
of fun guaranteed.
Meanwhile league action takes
place every Friday night at Heron
Park. Be a booster. Even if your
boy isn't playing come out and
cheer the other lads along.
If you'd like any further inform-
ation call Cliff Laycos at AT. 2 -
1442 .
This is really an important civic
undertaking with far-reaching
consequences in character building
of young boys. As Mr. Laycox put it:
"The kids are getting to the
age where they like to hang around
in a gang, so its better they hang
around together playing hockey."
The parents, teachers and all
Parties concerned with West Rouge
School will be pleased to learn
that regular hours and -classes
should be resumed by the New Year
with the addition ready to move
into by then.
Thanks to Mrs. Doreen Zealy,
the school librarian and her
committee of helpers the library
will be ready by the first of the
year with plenty of new and
interesting books for every grade
to read and use for references.
A Christmas Concert is planned
by the staff and pupils to be held
Wed. Dec. 9, at 8:15 p.m. at the
school. A programme by the Junior
and Senior Choirs with a Flute -a -
Phone Band should be worth coming
out to hear. Everyone welcome*
Pickering High School held
their Commencement on _Nov. 1.3 ih
the school auditoriums Congratul-
ations to three of our local young
people, Paul Monroe, Sandra Wa.ltier
and Beth Chisholm who received their
graduation diplomas from grade 13.
Mr. Clark the music instructor and
the Senior Glee Club entertained
with some very fine harmonizing
and songs. Mr. Ted Taylor the
mathematics teacher and his band
supplied the music for ,dancing after
the commencement exercises.
THE BAZAAR AND DANCE
The annual bazaar of the West
Rouge Ladies Club on November 7 was
an outstanding success. But there
was an unfortunate misunderstanding
regarding the dance which followed
that evening. The ladies and the
men of the Community Association
have in the past co-operated in
running the Bazaar Dance, but in
this case each group assumed the
other was taking the initiative in
the arrangements. It is hoped that
any who were inconvenienced will
forgive us.
