Blessing

service of Salem Church and Cemetery. On
this occasion when we remember our loved
ones - those who have bone before us over
tlge years - the line between Eternity and
Time seems very thin. We continue to wish
only the best for there and for each other
in the communion of the Church 'in heaven
and on earth.
The Salem Cemetery Board says thank -you to
the minister of the Greenwood Pastoral
Charge, Rev. A. Melvin Butler9 for conduct-
ing today' s Service and bringing the
message.
We also thank our special guests today, Mr.
and Mrs. Harvey B,-th of Ashburn, for lead-
ing in the music portions of our Service.
And, we have a word of appreciation for all
those who :in any way have prepared for this
annual service of remembrance -
in the cleaning of the Church
enhancing its beauty with flowers

the work of the Cemetery Board, under its
Chairman, Mr. Ralph Jones

The church, to be known as Seleii Church was
built upon its present location, upon land
given by John Adamson, anAnglican, for a
cemetery. The church was of frame con-
struction at first. In May 1849, the new
church was finished and dedicated. Salem
Church continued under the Oshawa Circuit
of the Wesleyan Methodist Church until 1855
when a Whitby Circuit was formed.
In 1863, the Pickering Circuit was formed,
consisting of ten congregations. (It was
in this year that we understand the congre-
gation was organized at Greenwood.) From
1863 to 1873 two ministers with several
local preachers were needed to care for
these ten congregations. In 1.84- the four
different branches of Methodism united to
form the Methodist Church of Clnada.
In 1880 Salem Church was bricked over with
bricks made in Samuel Adamson's brickyard
in the low area just north-west of the
church. Services were held in the Salem
Church regularly for 41 years 1849-1890.
An elderly Kinsale lady used to tell how
they went to Kinsale Church in the morning,
walked to Audley Church in the afternoon,
and walked to Salem for evening service.
Salem Church never had an organ or any
musical instrument when regular services
were held. Alexander gown, grandfather
of May and William Sr., used to lead the
singing with a fine tenor voice.
The Church was closed in 1890. Since thon
it has been used for occasional funerals,
and for Annual Memorial Day Services
held the last Sunday in June.
