The group, consisting of Cubs, Beavers, Scouts and Venturers, hopes to collect 10 tons of electronic waste by Christmas, and will continue collecting after that. “We’re going to do it for a full Scouting year at least,” said Alan Harris, group com- missioner. The group has applied for a $5,000 grant from the Pepsi Refresh Project, which invites individuals, businesses and non- profit organizations to submit ideas that will have a positive impact on communi- ties. Voting is open until Dec. 1, and the top four groups will receive $5,000 each. Durham Police arrested Kevin Plein, 47, on Nov. 2 for his alleged involvement in the "separate and untime- ly" deaths of two family members. Mr. Plein is charged with two counts each of crimi- nal negligence causing death and failure to provide the necessaries of life. He was living in the family’s Altona home on Concession 2, Uxbridge Township, at the time of the arrest. Court documents indicate that Mr. Plein is alleged to have caused the deaths of Cindy Plein and Erika Plein. The women, aged 49 and 72, are identified as being unable to provide themselves with the neces- sities of life because of illness. Kevin Plein, the docu- ments indicate, had a legal duty as person in charge of both deceased women. The charges relating to Cindy Plein are alleged to have occurred in June 2009; those relating to Erika Plein are alleged to have occurred between June 2009 and April 2010. While neighbours said they were surprised and shocked to hear about the arrest, they admitted little was known about the family. "They kept to themselves," said Jill Gould, who lives across the street from the family home. "We didn’t know them that well. They didn't really make friends and we didn't see them outside that often.” Ms. Gould said all she knew about Mr. Plein was that he tended to drive quickly up the street, but other than that, he kept to himself. She said follow- ing the death of the mother, police squad cars could periodically be seen parked in front of the house. Durham Police laid charges after a lengthy inves- tigation that included input by medical experts with the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service and the Cen- tre of Forensic Sciences. Neighbours confirmed there were only three fam- ily members living in the home at the time following the death of the father, Peter Plein, several years ago. They said the daughter had a disability and was rare- ly seen outside the family home. "I saw the family once in a while out grocery shop- ping in Stouffville, but never really saw them out- side," said Ivy Wideman, another neighbour. "It's so strange to think this may have happened only a few doors down from where I live.” Located in the southwest corner of Uxbridge Township just north of Pickering, the former ham- let of Altona lies within Transport Canada Green Space Preserve lands and many of the buildings in the area remain boarded up or derelict. Ajax-Pickering MPP Joe Dickson announced Monday the Rouge Valley Health System will receive $7.4 million in addi- tional operating funding to dis- perse between the Ajax-Pick- ering and Centenary hospitals. It’s intended to help pay for operating costs, especially in the newly expanded emergency department at the Ajax-Picker- ing site. “Our government has been working hard to modern- ize hospital infrastructure all across the province,” said Mr. Dickson in a press release. “We’re making tremendous progress. I’m thrilled that, with today’s announcement, Rouge Val- ley Ajax-Pickering hospital is going to be able to offer residents of Durham Region better access to high-quality care.” Hospital representatives were thankful for the funding. ”We thank MPP Joe Dickson, Health Minister Deb Matthews, the Central East Local Health Integration Network, and the premier for this funding. It will allow the hospital to offer the level of servic- es our growing west Durham and east Toronto communities need,” said Rik Ganderton, president and chief executive officer of Rouge Valley Health System. The redevelopment of the Ajax-Picker- ing site is a little behind sched- ule, but it’s officially expected to be completed after the hol- iday season. Initial forecasts expected it to open in October of this year. Rouge Valley spokesper- son David Brazeau explained while major work occurred in 2009 when the emergency department and complex con- tinuing care units opened, now it’s just a matter of completing the renovations, which resi- dents can see facing Harwood Avenue. A new cafeteria is also part of the major renovation that’s currently taking place, he said in an e-mail. The Ontario government has complet- ed 63 major hospital redevelopment proj- ects since October 2003. Your carrier will be visiting during the period shown to collect. Now it is time for my husband to start plan- ning the array of decorations that will adorn our front yard and the exterior of the house. Each season he makes his way to the stores and eyes the decorations that are so cleverly displayed. Inevitably, he purchases one or two items to be tastefully added to the ever- growing collection. After the “switch” has been thrown, I enjoy watching the inflatable Santa, snowmen and Christmas tree all come to life every night at 6 p.m. The neighbours are drawn to the sidewalk out front, each one comment- ing positively and grinning from ear to ear, just like our two young boys. Yes, once Dec. 1 rolls around, there is no mistaking our house, or our front lawn. It has definitely become a tradition in our neighbourhood. Sadly, there will be no inflatable tree or Frosty the Snowman this year. In fact, there will be no decorations at all. I actually feel like the Grinch visited last year and has taken from us the spectacular show. Due to vandalism last year, everything from per- manent marker on the Snowman, to shred- ding the Christmas tree with a knife and even smashing poor plastic, defenceless penguins, there will be no light show in our front yard this year. My husband is so disenchanted after see- ing the damage last year and more impor- tantly the cost involved in replacing every- thing. After several years of building this wonderful collection, Rudolph’s nose will no longer shine, thanks to some mean-spir- ited, nasty people who saw fit to ruin some- thing that so many people really enjoyed. To them I say ‘bah, humbug.’ Jenn Meredith, Ajax SUPPORT Harper government has already improved veterans’ benefits To the editor: As a supporter of the Conservative Party, I’m perplexed by your editorial of Wednes- day, Nov. 10, ‘More must be done to serve Canadian war veterans’. While I agree with your statement that, “adequate pensions, long-term physical and mental medical support, housing and retraining are the very least we can offer as a nation after asking veterans to risk their lives on our behalf,” you ignore recent improvements announced by the Conser- vatives. In addition to raising the salary level of a new recruit to $40,000, thereby increas- ing minimum disability benefits, veterans who have experienced serious injuries pre- venting their return to service will receive $1,000 more a month for the rest of their lives. This amount will be on top of 75 per cent of their salary plus an allowance of $536 to $1,609 monthly depending on the seriousness of the injury. Are these and other improvements enough? No. As stated by Defence Minister Peter Mac- kay, this is “the first instalment of another wave of changes that we’re going to make to address some of the concerns raised ...” Our military suffered under successive Liberal governments. The size of our Canadian Forces was allowed to plummet. Helicopters ordered by the Mulroney government were can- celled resulting in penalties in excess of half a billion dollars. We have not recovered from these blun- ders. This history of systemic policy incompe- tence included later Liberal governments retiring many of their under-performing Sea King helicopters, purchased by them in the 1960s, so that they could be cannibal- ized for parts -- thus keeping these remain- ing relics airborne. Not having learned from past errors, the Liberals have announced that they will cancel the Harper government’s recent F-35 fighter jet purchase should they form the next government. This would put us deeper in the hole. Indeed, much more does remain to be done. The simple fact is that four years of Con- servative minority government, in and of itself, cannot reverse the rot and carnage of past Liberal rule that includes the better part of the last 50 years. So is Clarington’s Shannon Thompson. Brook- lin’s Arlen Jean Recana is another, and he’s joined by fellow Whitby resident Samantha Breslin. All of these Durham Region residents are active in their communities, giving of their time and of themselves to better the lives or lot of others, at home and around the world. All of these Durham Region residents have been nominated in the past as Junior Citi- zens of the Year under a program adminis- tered by the Ontario Community Newspa- pers Association. And we know there are other Carlys and Shannons and Arlens in communities around Durham, working quietly behind the scenes with little recognition, a compel- ling need to help others as their sole motiva- tion. But Junior Citizen of the Year nominees aren’t all about charitable work. Individu- als can be nominated in one of four areas, including a person involved in worthwhile community service, a special young person contributing to their community while living with a physical or psychological limitation, an individual who has performed an act of heroism in the past year, or good kids who show a commitment to making life better for others and do more than is normally expect- ed of someone their age. Up to 12 nominees will be chosen as the final recipients of the provincial award and are invited to a spe- cial ceremony in Niagara Falls scheduled for spring, 2011. Nomination forms are available at www.ocna.org or by calling the OCNA at 905-639-8720 ext. 239. Durham Region has its fair share of young residents -- from Pickering to Clarington to Scugog to Uxbridge -- who are worthy nomi- nees. It could be your child, or a neighbour- hood teen known for his or her volunteer work. It could be a relative who acted hero- ically in challenging circumstances, or a young person who has overcome physical barriers to achieve something special. We know they’re busy studying and work- ing part-time jobs and contributing to their communities in countless ways. But it is you who knows who they are, what these youth have done and the promise their lives hold. Take a moment to obtain a nomination form and give your nominee an opportunity to be recognized. Nominations close Nov. 30. You can also pick up a nomination form from This Week at 865 Farewell Ave. in Oshawa. Do you know a future Junior Citizen of the Year? DURHAM -- As the cooler months begin, the Durham Region Health Department is reminding residents to protect themselves against the sun’s rays, even in winter. “There’s often a misconception that the cooler months provide a break from sun exposure, espe- cially for those who enjoy outdoor activities,” says Felicia Onwuemele, public health nurse. “Most people are not aware that their skin and eyes can be damaged from the UV rays whether it’s bright and sunny or a cold and cloudy winter day. It’s the same sun, same damage.” According to the World Health Organization, 80 per cent of the sun’s rays can penetrate light clouds, mist and fog. The group has joined the Ontario Elec- tronic Stewardship program and has saved bins full of televisions, comput- ers, monitors, stereos and other forms of electronics from going to landfill. “I just put a load in the truck and that’s the fourth one since September,” Mr. Harris said. The project started when Mr. Harris was driving around on a garbage collec- tion day and noticed a garbage collec- tor tossing a computer monitor into the truck. “I turned another corner and saw another truck throwing in a television set,” he said. The Scouting phrases of ‘helping to take care of the world’ and ‘wise in the use of all resources’ came to mind. Around the same time, the commis- sioner came across a news story about an electronic recycling plant in Bramp- ton that was running far below capac- ity due to the lack of material. He then called the plant and was given the num- ber for the OES. After learning the group needed insur- ance and a location to store the elec- tronics, the Scouts started collecting the waste and storing it in different areas of Mr. Harris’s house while all of the partic- ulars were met. Finally in September, the bin was deliv- ered to G and G Electronics in Scarbor- ough and 7th Pickering has since been collecting, as well as holding special events. One example was a barbecue and car wash held at the Amberlea Presbyterian Church in Pickering. The event was initially being held as a fundraiser for the Scouts, but the waste and recycling collection portion was eventually tacked on. “We filled a 20-yard bin in three hours,” Mr. Harris said. The group also ended up with 25 pounds of pop cans, two car batteries, 59 pounds of wire and a truck load of beer and liquor bottles. The Scouts could use support and online votes, but will also take Pickering residents’ old electronics off of their hands. Acceptable items that can be collected include televisions, computers, moni- tors, keyboards, mouses, fax machines and printers, stereo receivers, VCRs, DVD players, cameras, speakers and telephones. In addition to a popular Metis Heritage Festival offered in Oshawa every June, the council offers a sew- ing circle, potluck dinners, family literacy programs and a traditional dance group. And now -- thanks to more than $137,000 in funding from the feder- al government -- the council will be taking on three new projects. Over the coming months, Métis elder and master canoe maker Marcel Labelle will be working with students at G.L. Roberts CVI in Oshawa, to build a 25-foot voya- geur canoe, made entirely of natu- ral materials. When it’s complete, the canoe will be launched with a community feast. The funding will also allow the council to offer free fiddle lessons provided by JJ Lavallee, a pro- fessional fiddle player who has released three albums and won several Aboriginal People’s Coun- try Music Awards. As well, free dance lessons will be offered to local schools and com- munity groups, as well as to mem- bers of the Oshawa Durham Metis Council’s Olivine Bousquet Metis Dancers. Traditional Metis jigging is simi- lar to the Scotish-Irish step dance, but includes a more irregular beat offset by toe tapping and the use of spoons. “It’s a great cardio workout and it helps teach the community about Canadian history, which the Metis are a big part of,” said Trina Lavallee, who will be teaching the dance classes. “To truly embrace a dance you have to know where it comes from.” The three projects were announced at a special celebration at G.L.Roberts CVI on Nov. 10. “This is going to help the young people get to know their culture... and help the rest of the communi- ty learn about the Metis too,” said Mr. Pilon. “The Metis are such a big part of Canada’s history. The fur trade was the first economic engine of Canada and the Metis were the backbone. A lot of people don’t know that.” For more information on projects or to follow the building of the canoe: VISIT www.oshawametiscoun- cil.piczo.com (projects)www.spirit- calling.ddsbschools.ca (canoe) CULTURE Big canoe among new projects for Durham’s Metis du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • No v e m b e r 1 8 , 2 0 1 0 15 AP Proceeds will go to local charity PICKERING -- Local kids and teens will showcase their talent in Pickering this Fri- day for a good cause. The talent showcase, Voices in Pickering, will feature local youth presenting various musical and dance performances that rep- resent the different cultures that make up Pickering. The event is organized by the Pickering Youth Council, called (YOU)nity, whose goal is to bring Pickering’s youth closer together and break down walls created by stereotypes or racism. (YOU)nity is a youth sub-committee of the City of Pickering Advisory Committee on Race Relations and Equity. Many acts are set to hit the stage at the event, which will cost $2 a ticket at the door, and all proceeds will go to charity. The annual event raises money for a local Pickering charity, and this year (YOU)nity has chosen The Youth Centre, a non-prof- it charitable community health centre for teens living in Ajax and Pickering. It pro- vides a range of free and confidential med- ical, counselling, dietitian, young-parent support and outreach services. Donations for The Youth Centre will also be taken during the show. V.I.P will take place on Friday, Nov. 19 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Pickering Civic Complex, One The Esplanade, in council chambers. The Calgary Dinos quarterback threw for 270 yards and four touchdowns Saturday in a 56-3 victory over the Alberta Golden Bears in the Canada West final, thus booking his team’s trip to the semis against the St. Mary’s Huskies. The 56-point outburst matched a program record for points in a playoff game (1985 Western Bowl, a 56-14 win over Carle- ton), but more importantly, it leaves the club one victory away from a return trip to Quebec City for the Desjardins Vanier Cup. Glavic and the Dinos did a majority of their damage in the second and third quarters as the quarterback tossed two major scores in each to account for the four touchdowns and put the game, which was only 3-0 in favour of the Dinos after the first, out of reach. With Glavic completing 14 of 18 passes, his touchdowns went into the books as 10-, 34-, 13- and 32-yard strikes before giv- ing way to Canada West rookie of the year Eric Dzwilewski late in the third quarter with the Dinos enjoying a large lead. The remaining points came on a pair of fourth-quarter safeties. Before departing, Glavic spread the ball around effective- ly, as four players racked up at least 50 yards in the air and he helped to get the running game going as well with seven differ- ent Dinos collecting at least 20 yards on the ground. The Dinos will host the Mitch- ell Bowl Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Mountain Time and it will be shown live on TSN. Last year, Glavic led Calgary to a 38-14 win over St. Marys’s in the Uteck Bowl at Huskies Sta- dium in Halifax. Glavic started his university career with the Huskies before transferring to Calgary. Current Huskies include Whitby’s Adrian Bromfield and Matthew Simich, Adam Baboulos, Damone Black- man and Robbie Jubenville, of Oshawa, and Pickering’s Jacob Myall. In the other semi, the Ontar- io champion Western Mustangs travel east to face the top-ranked Laval Rouge et Or in the Uteck Bowl following Laval’s eighth straight Quebec conference vic- tory. The winner of that contest will take on the Mitchell Bowl champion in the 2010 Desjar- dins Vanier Cup Nov. 27 at PEPS Stadium in Quebec City. Oshawa’s Zaneth Jarvis and Sean Reczulski, Pickering’s Richard Bent, Calvin D’Costa and Patrick Smith are all mem- bers of Western’s roster. SANDRA WIGG / DINOS ATHLETICS CALGARY -- Pickering’s Erik Glavic, centre, celebrated with his team as the Calgary Dinos won the Hardy Cup over the Alberta Golden Bears. Glavic, a quarterback, threw for four touchdowns in the 56-3 win. Calgary has advanced to the Vanier Cup semifinals and will host St. Mary’s this weekend. LACROSSE Goaltender Nash gets a look with Toronto Rock Ajax resident invited to free agent and rookie camp with NLL team TORONTO -- Once former teammates with the Brooklin Redmen, Gee Nash and Steve Dietrich are again in competi- tion. The two netminders are among 26 invites to a free agent and rookie camp being held this week by the National Lacrosse League’s Toronto Rock. Nash, who led Colorado to the 2006 NLL championship, is attempting a comeback after missing last season due to a back injury suffered in 2009. The Rock, which will likely have 40-year-old Bob Watson back as one of its goaltenders this sea- son, could benefit from a heathy Nash, who, when fit, was regard- ed as one of the top goalies across the league for portions of the last decade. The 32-year-old Ajax native was nearly traded to the Rock, according to NLLInsider.com, back in the 2009 season, but his injury squandered the potential deal. For various reasons, Nash hasn’t played with the Red- men since 2006, the same sea- son Dietrich, who backed up in Toronto last season, played his one and only year in Brooklin. Joining them in the battle in net will be NLL veteran and cur- rent Ajax-Pickering Rock goalie Pat Campbell. Like Nash, Camp- bell did not play in the NLL in 2010. The one-time Toronto goal- tender last suited up in the league for the Calgary Rough- necks in 2009 and posted a 5-4 record with a 10.39 goals against average and a .766 save percent- age, before other commitments pulled him away from the game. The entire list of free agent invites includes Aaron Pascas, Pat Saunders, Chad Culp, Corey Fowler, Shane Scott, Jim Moss, Jordan Smith, Brett Shaw and Bryce Queener, along with cur- rent Redmen Dan Ball and Ajax- Pickering’s Jason Mainer, Justin Gibson and Bill McLean. Among the Toronto draft picks scheduled to attend, two Red- men, Kyle O’Brien and Sean Gil- lies, join a group that includes Redmen draft pick Damon Edwards along with Glen Bryan, Sean Robinson, Rob Hellyer, Kyle O’Brien, Mike MacNamara, Ryan Dilks and Zack Boychuk (6th Rd ‘10). The camp opened on Wednes- day and will also run Saturday and Sunday at Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Six Nations and one final day, Nov. 24. FOOTBALL Pickering falls to Wilson in junior football final CLARINGTON -- The Wil- son Gators captured their second consecutive LOSSA junior football champion- ship and fourth in six years as they exploded for three unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter to defeat Pickering 50-27. The Trojans were seeking their 10th junior title. Grade 9 sensation Andrew Smith led the Gator attack, recording four touchdowns via runs of 35, 42, 15 and 45 yards. Smith’s initial touch- down had staked the Gators to a 7-0 first-quarter lead. Pickering, however, responded with three sec- ond-quarter scoring plays to take a 15-7 lead as a safety by Kyle Forde was sandwiched with touchdowns by Jesse St. John (one-yard keeper) and Nevell Provo (26-yard run converted by Dakota Parsons). The Gators were able to level the score with just over a minute left until half time when Jerome Gon- salves-Akers called his own number on a two-yard keep- er and Dylan Misseri added a two-point convert. The three-touchdown onslaught in the third quar- ter was aided by numerous Trojan objectionable con- duct penalties, the first two of which advanced the ball from the 30-yard line to the one where Sanjay Francis easily scored. Smith then scored his second touch- down and then Francis picked up his second on a three-yard carry to extend the lead to 36-15. In the fourth quarter, the Trojans mounted a come- back with St. John scor- ing his second short yard- age touchdown of the game and Jackson Lyder hauling in a 15-yard pass from St. John to narrow the margin to nine points with just over eight minutes remaining. An ensuing onside kick gave the Trojans the ball back and suddenly the once-comfort- able Gator lead did not seem insurmountable. However, once the Gators got the ball back, Smith went to work recording his third and fourth touchdowns in the final four minutes to seal the deal. Malcolm Branton was a perfect six for six in point after attempts for the Gators. The loss was the first of the season for Pickering which had won the regular season contest over Wilson 24-22. Raekwon Grant, the league MVP, did not play for Pickering in the playoffs after suffering a season-ending ankle injury in the final regu- lar season game. Both the junior champi- on Wilson Gators and final- ist Pickering Trojans will be participating in the Ontar- io junior regional football championship. Pickering will travel to St. Michaels College on Friday afternoon with kickoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The host team won the independent division championship. The Gators will host the COSSA champi- on Belleville Centennial on Tuesday, Nov. 23. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 1 p.m. The winners of these two quarterfinal games will advance to the semifinals. There are many forms of dance but perhaps the most intriguing form of dance is belly dance. Thousands of years old, belly dance has fascinated people since the beginning of time. Belly dancing is very much alive today at the preeminent belly dancing school in Ajax. Zahra’s School of Belly Dance opened in 1997 and is owned by Zahra. Zahra is an acclaimed belly dancer with over 25 years of experience. Her students regard her as an amazing and inspiring instructor. Zahra supports belly dance be- cause of its diversity and creativity. She believes that when the dancer becomes more focused she becomes more physi- cally, emotionally and spiritually indepen- dent. Zahra’s focus is always on health, creativity and motivation. Belly dancing helps dancers to grow as individuals and improves the dancer’s confi dence, health, fl exibility, strength and coordination. And it’s a lot of fun! A fi rm supporter of the Durham community, Zahra organizes an annual makeup drive benefi ting the Herizon House. She has donated over $5,000 to the Ajax/Pickering Hospital and has pur- chased over 50 baby lights, pillows and oximeters for the Neo- Natal Unit and Emergency Department. She contributes regularly to the Humane Society of Durham Region, Bevy of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, schools and local charities. In 2008, the Town of Ajax recognized Zahra as an exception- al volunteer by honouring her with the Volunteer Recognition Award. In 2009 she was awarded the Arts Award by the City of Pickering. She has also won numerous Readers Choice Awards. Zahra’s School of Belly Dance is located at 570 Westney Road, Ajax.
