HIS Majesty the King, accompanied by Her
Majesty the Queen, made constitutional history
by coming to the Canadian Senate Chamber
during the afternoon of May 19, 1939 and
there giving the Royal Assent in Person to
bills passed by the Dominion Parliament. On
this occasion, the King exercised in Canada,
in relation to the Parliament at Ottawa, an
authority and function identical with that
which His Majesty would have exercised in
relation to the Parliament at Westminster, had
he been in the United Kingdom. This
ceremony was the outstanding exemplification,
during the Royal Tour, of the assimilation of
the constitutional position of Canada to that
of the United Kingdom. The upper photo-
graph shows the brilliance of the scene in
which the Royal Assent was given.
