Georgian Bay. Splendid summer homes, many of them owned
by residents of the ]United States, dot the shores of Lake Mus-
koka, and its hotels are among the best in the district.
From Lake Muskoka the steamboats pass into Lake Rosseau
through a lock situated at Port Carling. This is the point where
cottagers and campers and summer visitors con-
Rosseau gregate, whither steamers and launches and all
and Joseph manner of craft converge, where the life of the
lakes pulsates most strongly. All water -borne
traffic between Lake Muskoka and Lakes Rosseau and Joseph
must meet here, and the scene is frequently very lively and pit;-
turesque as steamers and launches, boats and canoes crowd the
approaches waiting their turn to be locked through.
Lake Rosseau is, perhaps, to be regarded as the fairest of all
the Muskoka Lakes. Its southern portion is gemmed with islets,
and here more summer cottages are to be found than in any
other part of the lakes. This section of Lake Rosseau has not
inappropriately been named "Venetia", for not in Venice itself
are boats more needed or more used than here. All the way tip
the lake,. to the village of Rosseau at its head, are located the
more notable resorts. At Rosseau there flows into the lake the
beautiful Shadow River.
Lakes Rosseau and Joseph join at Port Sandfield, another
notable centre of holiday activity and the scene of famous re-
gattas. The latter body of water stretches off to the left, and is
famous for its clearness; indeed, the Indians called it "the clear
water". This characteristic produces, under certain atmospheric
conditions, wonderful effects of light and shadow. Lake Joseph
has wide, open stretches, which the yachtsman will apprecialr,

and calmer reaches among the islands more suited to the canoe-
ist. To the north lies Little Joseph Lake, an enchanting resort
surrounded by rugged cliffs of great height, the summits of
which, however, are accessible and naturally laid out in groves
and walks.
The visitor to Lake Joseph and the other lakes in the Mus-
koka chain at once notices the soft quality of the water. In the
Muskoka district the waters are, in fact, particularly pure and
inviting. Their freedom from lime salts is due to the absence of
any limestone formation, the Muskoka rocks being Laurentian
granites and gneiss. Absence of lime salts gives the waters a
special value to the overworked business roan, especially if show-
ing any high blood pressure, or arterial changes, lime being
credited with raising the blood pressure.
In addition to the beauties of the lakes, there are many pic-
turesque rivers in the district which invite the attention of the
visitor. Shadow River, one of Nature's gems, at
River the head of Rosseau Lake, would alone repay the
Trips traveller for the journey up the lakes. With it:
deceptive shadows and reflections, it is an en-

you are creeping steadily and stealthily into the deep mys-
shadows. You seem to be in perpetual circles of branches
ughs and boughs and branches, above and below —which
the real and which the image your fingers soon discover as they
slip into the soft, still waters. By taking a trip down the Mus-
kosh River from Bala for a few miles the tourist will be amply
repaid, for the fishing is good and the scenery among the most
attractive in the whole Muskoka district. About two and one-
half miles down the river the Moon River branches off, entering
Georgian Bay some twenty miles north of the Muskosh. To the
canoeist, a trip down either river to the bay is one constant
source of enjoyment.
There are ideal camp sites available on the shores of every
lake in the Muskoka region, and these may be occupied, in most
cases, without charge of any kind. The visitor
Camps and may camp on one of the islands and be in a veri-
Cottages table kingdom of his own. Life under canvas, with
its freedom from the conventionalities of the
large resort, appeals to many men and women. Fresh food may
be freely obtained.
Many of the resort hotels (see list in this booklet) have cot-
tages to rent by the month or season, or can place the inquirer in
touch with those who have such accommodation. The Muskoka
Navigation Company, Gravenhurst, Ont.; Monteith Bros., Ros-
seau, Ont.; Capt. Rogers, Port Sandfield, Ont.; J. S. Livingstone,
43 Scout St., Toronto, Ont., will be pleased to supply information.
There need be no dull hours in a Muskoka vacation; bathing
in the soft waters of the lakes, canoeing, sailing and motor -

boating, golfing, tennis, fishing, walks through the
Lakeland woods, and steamboat excursions provide some -
Recreation thing new for each day. There is music and danc-
ing in the evenings at the majority of the resorts,
and an enjoyable social life. As a result of re -stocking the waters
with fry, the fishing in the Muskoka Lakes shows improvement
each year.
The Windermere Golf and Country Club has an excellent golf

which has received the very highest praise from

nine -hole golf course, now in its seventh season. Improvements
and additions have made it very popular with visitors to Mus-
koka. It is a course of 2,150 yards. Playing privileges for visitors:
$1.00 per day, $5.00 per week. Nine -hole golf course is also main-
tained at Elgin House for use of guests.
In the variety of excellent accommodation offered to the visi-
tor, Muskoka has few rivals among resort districts. You may
take a choice of hotels, ranging from the modest
Resort to the fashionable, of boarding houses, of peaceful
Hotels country homes, or of cosy island cottages.
The Elgin House on Lake Joseph, adjacent to Port Sand -
field and conveniently reached via Lake Joseph Station, has
accommodation for over 300 guests. The appointments through-
out are thoroughly modern and the service all that can be
desired. An excellent 9-hole golf course is one of the many
attractive features at this point.
Among the other large resort houses with accommodation for
one hundred guests or over are the Monteith House (open the
year round), Cleveland's House, Windermere, Morinus House,
Milford Bay House, Cedar Wild, Port Carling House,
Nepahwin-Gregory, Ferndale House, Woodington House,
Ernescliffe, Pinelands House, Belmont House, Stanley House,
New Windsor and Island View. There are scores of other
well -kept hotels offering good food, airy rooms, and a variety
of attractions.
The Muskoka Assembly (The Canadian Chautauqua) was sue
cessfully inaugurated during the season of 1921 to provide a cen-
tre where young people might spend their holi-
Muskoka days in attractive surroundings, enjoy wholesome
Assembly entertainments, and if desired, short courses of
practical and inspirational study. During July an(;
August the "Little Theatre in the Woods" at Muskoka Assemblj
is the centre of amateur dramatic entertainments, concerts, pop-
ular lectures and moving pictures. The Assembly is situated ill
a natural park of more than 200 acres and has two miles of
water -front, on which there are several good sandy bathing
beaches.

HOW TO REACH MUSKOKA LAKES
The Muskoka Lakes -are easily accessible from all the principal
centres of Eastern Canada and the United States by the Can-
adian National Railways and their connections. The railway
service is first class in every respect, with most modern equip-
ment. The three gateways to this area are Muskoka Wharf,
Bala Park and Lake Joseph stations.
The distances to the Muskoka Lakes from some of the prin-
cipal Canadian and United States centres are approximately as
follows: Toronto, 112 miles; Niagara Falls, 196 miles; Buffalo,
218 miles; Pittsburgh, 475 miles; New York City, 657 miles;
Philadelphia, 634 miles; Washington, 654 miles; -Boston, 775
miles; Montreal, 446 miles; Ottawa, 369 miles; Detroit, 341
miles; Chicago, 627 miles; St! Louis, 830 miles. The accompany-
ing map shows the location of the Muskoka Lakes. Any Can-
adian National Railways Agent (see list in this publication)
will gladly assist you in planning your tour.
The Customs examination should be attended to at the first
port of entry to Canada. Baggage may, however, be bonded
on Toronto or on Montreal, where Customs officers are located
regularly, or on Muskoka Wharf, Bala Park or Lake Joseph in
the Muskoka Lakes district, where Customs inspectors are
located during the summer season.
Passengers for the Muskoka Lakes should request that their
baggage be checked through to destination on the lakes, but
if it is not possible for the railway agent to arrange this, bag-
gage should be checked to station where the passenger joins
the steamboat.
