DR. MALCOM BANCROFT DAVIS ROBERT MILLER DR. WALTER RUSSELL SHAW
1890 — 1979
Dr. Davis is best known for his dynamic leadership
in Canadian horticulture for half a century. His work
formed the foundation of much of the present research
in breeding, nutrition, physiology, storage and process-
ing of horticultural crops in Canada.
During his distinguished career, Dr. Davis served as
manager of Sunnyside Farms, Secretary of the United
Fruit Company Limited in Nova Scotia, pomologist at
the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa and, in 1933,
was appointed Dominion Horticulturalist.
Fruits, vegetables, and hardy ornamental varieties
developed during his term are still grown commercially
and used by breeders for improving varieties today. He
pioneered and successfully established apple growing in
the Eastern Townships of Quebec, which led to the
founding of the Canadian frozen food industry.
In recognition of his contribution to Horticulture, Dr.
Davis was awarded Fellowships in the Agricultural
Institute of Canada, the American Society for Horti-
culture, the American Association for the Advancement
of Science, and Honorary Life Memberships in the
Canadian Society for Horticultural Science and the
Western Canadian Society of Horticulture. An Honorary
LL.D. was conferred on Dr. Davis by McGill University.
1856 — 1935
Robert Miller made considerable contributions to the
agricultural industry as an importer, breeder, and ex-
porter of purebred sheep, cattle, horses and ponies,
particularly for the benefit of small farmers and breeders.
His first importation was made in 1881, with twenty-six
succeeding trips to the United Kingdom and north-
western Europe for the betterment of breeding herds in
Canada, the United States, and Mexico. In 1902, the
Livestock Association of Mexico conferred an honorary
life membership on Mr. Miller for his contributions.
As a representative of four Breed Associations —
Shorthorn, Clydesdale, Hackney and Sheep — he was a
founding member of the Canadian National Livestock
Records, and served as its first and sixth Chairman of the
Board.
As a member of the Toronto Industrial Exhibition
Association, he became a Director in 1902, an Executive
Member in 1918, and served as the first farmer President
of the Canadian National Exhibition Association in
1924, where he actively supported the formation of the
Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and was a committee
member for twelve years.
Recognized internationally as a judge of livestock,
some of Mr. Miller's most gratifying assignments were
visits to the Ontario Agricultural College to adjudicate
classes of students in their placing of show and market
animals.
He was an original board member of the Ontario
Research Council, and an executive member of the Inter-
national Livestock Exposition, Chicago.
1887 —
Dr. Shaw has led a diverse life, with a constant goal
towards the betterment of agriculture on Prince Edward
Island. His career included agricultural extension work,
journalism, farming, and politics.
Dr. Shaw was keenly interested in young people, and
his development of school fairs, boys' and girls' calf
clubs, and young men's heifer clubs led to the establish-
ment of the 4-H movement in Prince Edward Island.
During his years as Prince Edward Island Livestock
Superintendent, he established a provincial policy
whereby all cattle ware tested for bovine tuberculosis.
He upgraded swine and Clydesdale breeding stock, and
improved sheep and poultry policies. As a result, Dr.
Shaw was placed on the first Maritime Livestock Board
of Directors.
As Deputy Minister of Agriculture, he took an active
part in developing standing fields of grain competitions
and seed fairs, established the Eastern Canada Potato
Marketing Board in Ottawa, improved co-operative
handling of livestock, and established the Island veteri-
nary services.
In 1957, Dr. Shaw became leader of the Provincial
Conservative Party and, subsequently, Premier of Prince
Edward Island and Minister of Agriculture from 1959 to
1966. He continued to lead the opposition until his
retirement in 1972.
Dr. Shaw has received many honors. He was de-
corated by Royalty on three occasions — a Jubilee Medal
in 1935, an M.B.E. and citation in 1950, and a Corona-
tion Medal. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws
degree from St. Dunstan's University and Mount Allison
University, and was awarded the Canada Medal of Merit
and Order of Canada.
