Tree of Commitment
44.
This old tree is near Stouffville, Ontario, and local
tradition has it that William Lyon Mackenzie' flew his
flag from its top branch in 1837 when rallying his men
for the revolution to protest the government's dictatorial
powers.
Mackenzie acted out of his conviction and his com-
mitment to a cause. Christians act out of their commit-
ment to Christ, and show their commitment by a
responsible use of time, abilities, energies and money,
not only for self, but for others.
As the old year ends, our memories will recall events
which were both sad and happy. We may also do some
mental stock -taking; how many did we help? Did we
always respond when need arose ? Did we study to
deepen our faith ? These and other questions come
naturally to those with a commitment to "love the Lord
your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all
your mind,.and with all your strength .. . and your
neighbour as yourself."
