About 350 additional students with autism are expected over the next two years, about double the normal amount. In delivering judgment Tuesday in Oshawa, Onta- rio Court Justice Marquis Felix rejected Thomas Grieve's assertion that, while he frequently touched students, he had never done so for a sexual purpose. Grieve, 40, taught at Whitby's Robert Munsch Public School from 2011 to 2018, and prior to that taught at E.A. Fair- man Public School, also in Whitby. "The central message of the defendant's testimony was that while he engaged in the physical touching of students, he never touched a student in a sex- ual manner, or with sexu- al intent in his mind," the judge said Sept. 17. "I do not believe either of these central positions ad- vanced by the defendant." During a trial that be- g an last May, Grieve pleaded not guilty to counts of sexual assault and sexual interference against 14 students be- tween 2010 and 2018. Charges relating to a 15th complainant were with- drawn when the trial be- g an May 28. During clos- ing submissions in late Ju- ly, the Crown invited the judge to dismiss charges relating to another com- plainant. That left the judge to rule on charges relating to each of the re- maining 13 complainants. In Tuesday's ruling, Fe- lix convicted Grieve on 16 charges relating to eight children. He was acquitted on charges relating to five. As the verdicts were de- livered in a crowded court- room Grieve sat with his head down and his hands clasped in front of him, showing no overt reaction to the judge's findings. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for No- vember. During the trial court heard from more than a dozen young people, some of them still in elementary school, who described in- cidents in which they'd been touched by Grieve and, in some cases, saw him touch others. The children said contact that included Grieve touching and caressing them on their buttocks and slip- ping his hand under their clothes. Court heard that Grieve was a popular teacher and sports coach who had a knack for com- municating with kids. But over time, because of the frequent touching, he came to be regarded as "creepy," court heard. Grieve was the lone de- fence witness. During his testimony he admitted he often touched children, but insisted this contact had been misinterpreted by the kids. "I feel horrible that they perceive me to be touchy," Grieve said at one point. "I also feel horrible that my teaching career is gone." Grieve's defence law- yers, Justin Nasseri and Owen Goddard, also ar- gued that gossip among the children had created a culture of collusion that distorted perceptions of the teacher's conduct. Grieve was first arrest- ed in March of 2018 on charges relating to eight complainants, with the al- legations relating to the period from September of 2016 to February of 2018. In April of 2018 he was charged with allegations relating to another seven complainants, some of them dating back to 2010. A publication ban pro- hibits reporting on infor- mation that might identify any of the complainants. FORMER DURHAM TEACHER FOUND GUILTY OF SEX ASSAULTS ON STUDENTS Thomas Grieve, most recently an elementary-school teacher at Robert Munsch Public School in Whitby, is now accused of sexual assault and sexual interference against 15 children, according to the indictment. He faces a total of 30 charges relating to sexual offences against people under the age of 16. Standing in front of the General Motors plant on Park Road South, Singh said an NDP government would commit to a $300 mil- lion Automotive Innova- tion fund, update govern- ment fleets to Canadian- made zero-emissions vehi- cles and shift customer in- centives to include made-in-Canada vehicles only. "What Liberals have done and Conservatives have done, they've given blank cheques to wealthy corporations. Blank cheques with no strings at- tached," Singh said. "In- stead, they've taken bil- lions of dollars in some cases, and then just closed down the factories and shipped away the jobs. And that's wrong. We want to put an end to that." Singh said the strategy would attract and retain "good paying auto" jobs in communities like Oshawa, and ensure that companies receiving government in- vestment aren't able to pack up and leave. For example, he said loans could be tied to a company's assets and phys- ical infrastructure. Because the Automotive Innovation Fund used to exist, Singh said it would be possible to reinstate it quickly. "A New Democratic gov- ernment would immediate- ly bring back the Automo- tive Innovation Strategy that used to exist...and tie in that strings attached clause, where if there's in- vestments made, they have to require that the jobs stay in Canada." Oshawa resident Mack Kurelo watched Singh's an- nouncement from the door of a nearby laundromat as he was waiting for a load of clothes to dry. He is currently unem- ployed after being laid off from a position as a clean- er, and said his number one concern in this election, is jobs. "There's really nothing that's not minimum wage, part-time, things like that. You don't want to have to be working two jobs just to pay for your life," he said. "I've been looking, I can tell you that. There's not much out there right now." Singh was the first fed- eral leader to visit Durham during this campaign. Who's heard that com- ment when folks talk about Highway 407? The same comment now applies to Highway 412 in Whitby and will soon apply to Highway 418 in Clarington. Reader David Kopycin- ski asked, "Why is the 407 so expensive? You can cross the entire Ohio Turn- pike for about $20 (288 km) yet the 407 from end to end costs nearly $60 for 108 km." We asked the 407 ETR how rates are determined, but the company didn't re- spond. Kopycinski is correct when it comes to the cost of driving on the 407. Using the fare calcula- tor on the company's web- site, travelling from Lake Ridge Road at the border of Ajax and Whitby to Airport Road in Brampton, costs $30.17 ($25.97 with a tran- sponder) for a trip of 60.4 kilometres (37.5 miles). That total breaks down to $22.80 for driving on the 407 ETR, $2.17 on the sec- tion of the 407 owned by the provincial government, a $1 trip charge and $4.20 for a camera charge. The 407 from Brock Road in Pickering east to highways 35/115, along with highways 412 and 418, is provincially owned. A trip on the New York State Thruway, from Route 33 in Buffalo (near the air- port) to downtown Albany is a distance of 279.7 miles (450 kilometres). The cost would be $13.10, or $12.45 with an E-Z Pass. It wasn't supposed to be this way. When it was built, the Ontario government owned the highway. How- ever, the Mike Harris gov- ernment, heading into an election in 1999, decided to sell it to the Spanish con- struction company Grupo Ferrovial, with SNC-Lava- lin owning a piece. At the time of the sale, the Harris government said the cost of tolls wouldn't increase signifi- cantly, because the owner needed drivers on the road, according to Linda McQuaig, author of The Sport and Prey of Capital- ists: How the Rich are Stealing Canada's Public Wealth. In an excerpt in the To- ronto Star recently, McQuaig argued the Har- ris government botched the sale, selling it for far less than it would eventual- ly be worth. Also, the gov- ernment gave the new own- ers a 99-year lease, which runs to 2098. The government sold the highway for $3.107 bil- lion. Within two years, SNC-Lavalin sold its share of the highway, which by then had a value of $6.3 bil- lion. McQuaig wrote, "The sheer amount of money the Harris government gave up is astonishing. Recent esti- mates put the value of the 407 today at a staggering $30 billion. Ferrovial esti- mates that, by 2026, the highway will be worth $45 billion. These mega-bil- lion-dollar price tags re- flect how much revenue is expected to be collected - in other words, how much Ontarians are going to pay for the privilege of driving on this road over the com- ing decades." McQuaig said the Har- ris government predicted tolls wouldn't rise by more than 30 per cent over 15 years. However, tolls went up more than 300 per cent over that period. That cost is the reason the highway isn't very busy. Whitby Mayor Don Mitchell pointed that out during a recent meeting of regional council's works committee. He said the 407 is "pretty much empty" during morning and evening rush hour, but Winchester Road is solid. "The 418, do they expect anyone to ever ride it? There's an airport landing strip," Mitchell said. "The 407 is just not working. They set the tolls too high. It's failing." ASK US: WHY IS THE 407 SO EXPENSIVE? Hwy. 407 isn't popular in Durham Region, or other areas, because of high tolls. The hope was the highway would serve as relief from the high traffic volumes on Hwy. 401, but that hasn't been the case. We're at the brink of that roller-coaster ride into winter, the autumn equi- nox, and should savour ev- ery warm, sunny day that comes our way. Get out there into nature, people! I took my own advice and went canoeing last week. And I can tell you, fall's on its way. Red ma- ples north of the Sault are already splotching wooded hilltops with crimson, birch trees with bright yel- low. It's coming, folks! We'd been planning to camp at Tadoussac, out along the St. Lawrence, watching for whales, then find a string of backcoun- try lakes in Quebec to pad- dle. But with hurricane Dorian sweeping up the coast, my husband and I decided to head west in- stead, and the best long- range forecast was for north of Superior. Sure enough, after a night of rain on the tent along Lake Huron's north shore, and a day's drive beyond Wawa and White River, wind- shield wipers working, we emerged into three days of glorious sunshine. And amazingly, winds calm enough for the ultimate ca- noe trip - out on the clear, clean waters of our most mysterious, most magnifi- cent Great Lake. We spent the first morn- ing paddling the sheltered waters of Hattie Cove at Pukaskwa National Park, poking the bow of our ca- noe out between rocks at the mouth for just a taste of the roiling, heaving waves Superior is known for. By the next day, 100 kilo- metres farther west, the lake was like glass, so we ventured out among the is- lands off Rossport Har- bour. Sneaking along the base of towering cliffs, hugging the shores in case of a shift in winds, we saw eagles, mergansers and merlins, as well as flocks of warblers starting their long journey south to the tropics. I felt so brave, out there on that big water, and so gleeful, finally adding Lake Superior to my ca- noe-trip repertoire. Care about /newsletters To be an adult means to have the awesome respon- sibility of painting a pic- ture for children where they flourish in their pre- sent and future. Clearly, some have not gotten this memo - as illustrated by two recent disturbing things. Take, for instance, an ad I saw on the back of a local bus. It had the picture of a sweet-looking little girl who couldn't be more than four and said, "At 22, Han- nah will be treated for anxi- ety to reduce thoughts of suicide" followed by the website givefortomorrow- .ca. I checked it out and it's an ad from Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. Now the ad worked to the extent that it got my at- tention. But while it may be factual, here's the differ- ence between facts and truth. Facts say there's rain in the forecast. Truth says there's rain in the forecast with a chance of sunny breaks, and your faith in the truth has the ability to defy the facts so that it's sunny where you are. In my teens, I remember having a poster in my room that said "My future's so bright I've got to wear shades." Now that I'm an adult, sadly it seems like there's an atmosphere we're creat- ing that's more stormy than bright for an emerg- ing generation. I have no doubt that On- tario Shores does excellent work, but have we forgot- ten that we're teaching our children to read too? So they can read that ad, and so can the youth who are al- ready struggling. How does this encourage them about their future? I wondered the same thing when on the first day of school Laura Walton, president of CUPE's Onta- rio School Board Council of Unions, said that workers would likely give the union a "strong" strike mandate in the next couple of weeks. It doesn't matter to me what side you're on or who you're siding with. Both sides have issues - I've long likened the government and union relationship to an ongoing divorce where it's just accusation after ac- cusation with no one inter- ested in co-parenting. How does saying this on the first day of school break that stalemate and create hope for students who are just beginning a new sea- son? We blame social me- dia for so many things; per- haps we should look at our- selves. Adults are the ones who set the atmosphere for children and youth. If we're just children pretending to be adults, then perhaps youth should receive an- other forecast, because it certainly can't be worse than ours. Since the spring, there has been a dizzying num- ber of controversial educa- tion announcements from the provincial govern- ment. The rhetoric on all sides is loud. Statements from school boards, unions and the government often di- rectly contradict one an- other. There's EQAO math scores and math testing for teachers, the "new" sex ed- ucation curriculum, la- bour negotiations for teachers and education workers, the future of full- day kindergarten and mandatory e-learning. Last year was one of the most chaotic and confusing for Ontario's education system in recent memory. Is this year shaping up to be more of the same? It looks that way. Just look at the class size controversy. In March, the Ontario government revealed plans to increase the average high school class size from 22 to 28 students over the next four years, and grade 4 to 8 classes from an average of 23.8 students, to 24.5. Teacher unions project- ed the loss of 400 teaching positions in Durham, called it an "attack on edu- cation" and held rallies outside local MPP offices. Local school boards struggled with how to plan courses for the 2019-20 school year. Over four years, the Durham Catholic District School Board said it would lose 420 course sections, leading to less variety of courses, combining cours- es or combining grades. DCDSB director of edu- cation Anne O'Brien called the situation "very, very distressing" at an April board meeting. Then came confusion when Education Minister Stephen Lecce said Aug. 22 that he is "open" to sugges- tions from school boards and unions to stop class siz- es from increasing and said "class sizes will effectively remain the same as last year for this September." Lecce referenced "mis- information" that is caus- ing concern for parents and said students will "still enjoy a variety of courses." This, despite the fact that school boards already set budgets and course op- tions months ago, based on the information they were given in the spring. "This is the basis on which school boards have been planning for this year, resulting in courses and programs being cancelled, supports being lost, and teachers' and education workers' jobs being elimi- nated," said Liz Stuart, president of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association. Durham's Catholic board cut 32 high school teachers, 15 elementary teachers and 12 early childhood educators for this year. The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board released a detailed list of courses cancelled for 2019-20 at its four high schools in Clarington, in- cluding classes in French, media arts and computer programming. This isn't the only com- plex controversy unfold- ing. Parents have faced mixed messaging about the impact of changes to Onta- rio's autism program. When the change was first announced, families were told children under age six will receive up to $20,000 a year - those over six will get $5,000 a year. Childhood budgets up to age 18 will be capped at $140,000 for kids entering the program under age six, and lifetime funding for those entering at older ages will be limited to $55,000. Many faced the prospect of losing therapy and put- ting their children into the school system. A Durham District School Board report said 350 to 400 more students with autism were expected by winter 2020, about triple the normal amount. DDSB trustees were so concerned about the im- pact on families and vul- nerable kids, they the took the unusual step of issuing a strongly worded joint statement in March, urg- ing the public to take ac- tion. Then, more confusion. In July, the Ontario gov- ernment backed away from the unpopular overhaul and said there would be a return to needs-based funding by April 2020. But it's still unclear how that will roll out. Concerned parents have held rallies outside Dur- ham MPP offices, saying kids are languishing on wait-lists and that there is a shortage of available ser- vices. Just how this will im- pact school boards in the coming year remains to be seen. There is concern about how special-educa- tion budgets will hold up if there is an influx of stu- dents with complex needs. Buckle up. The 2019-20 school year is on track to be a bumpy one. The what is the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837. But it's the why that is at the centre of the award- winning A Spirit Walk: Call to Re- bellion! The historical play returns to Pickering Museum Village, 2365 Concession Road 6 in north Picker- ing, Sept. 12, 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21. Show times are at 7:15, 7:30, 7:45, 8, 8:20, 8:35 and 8:50 p.m. Next year marks the 25th anni- versary season. The majority of the rebels came from Pickering. The second largest group was from Uxbridge and area and others came from Oshawa, Whitby and all over Durham Re- gion. The rebellion was a huge failure in a military sense. But the rebels ultimately won, as responsible gov- ernment was on the horizon. Tickets are $25, available at bit.ly/327EZYG. For more information call the museum village at 1-905-683-8401. GHOSTS WON'T STAY QUIET WHAT'S ON PICKERING - Working as a professional dancer in various forms including ballet, jazz, mod- ern and tap, it was only after a 2004 injury that Bernadette Recto dis- covered her love of Pilates and how it helped heal her body. "It was recommended by a friend who had the same experi- ence as I had," said Recto, adding Pilates helped her regain her strength following the injury. This led her to pursue her pas- sion for Pilates, a system of exer- cises intended to strengthen the body and mind, becoming a fully certified instructor in the Stott Pi- lates method - a more contempo- rary approach to the original exer- cise method pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates. And, after becoming certified in the Pilates method, Recto opened her own Pilates studio, Pi- lates by Bernadette, eight years ago. A year ago she moved the stu- dio to its current location on the Pickering waterfront at 1295 Wharf St., Unit 39, Pickering. Pilates by Bernadette marked its eighth anniversary recently with a celebration at Chuuk Bar and Restaurant in south Pickering for all its clients, including hors d'oeuvres, music and dance. Offering a wide range of time- less and cutting-edge workout pro- grams and private and small- group classes for all fitness levels, Pilates by Bernadette is a special- ty, intimate, full-service Pilates studio focused on developing unique programming. Pilates by Bernadette inspires and motivates clients to achieve their specific needs and goals, ranging from re- hab to athletic performance. Recto says the benefits of Pi- lates are many. She listed her top five benefits: 1. Increased strength and length without unwanted bulk. In- creased core strength, stability and peripheral mobility; en- hanced balance, co-ordination and circulation; 2. Improved fitness levels, which may help prevent injury and enable greater ease of move- ment through to a full range; 3. Heightened body awareness and mindfulness of movement; 4. Decreased impact on the joints. 5. Added variety as a comple- ment to other forms of exercise. Improved performance of specific sport skills (golf, skiing, hockey, etc.). Chris Tanouye/Photo BUTTERFLIES ON DISPLAY Cameras can also show what is inside a trailer you are towing. The camera can be used at any time at any speed and will also show you a faster vehicle coming up beside the truck. “The number one buying situation in this field is towing,” said Tim Herrick, executive chief engineer and an architect on the new Sierra which he noted is not a “carry over” from its predecessor. Towing capacity on the dual rear wheel model with diesel engine Sierra is increased by 52 per cent to 35,500 lb, up from 23,000 lb. According to GMC, 93 per cent of heavy-duty truck users use their vehicles for towing. Of that number, 41 per cent use their truck to tow a camper, 22 per cent a large trailer, 16 per cent a boat, three per cent a horse trailer and 18 per cent, use their truck to tow other items. Rich Latek, GMC’s marketing director noted the Sierra is the “lifeblood” of the company. “You are the King of the Road when you drive this vehicle,” he noted. The HD Sierra is powered by either an all-new 6.6-litre V8 gas engine paired with a six- speed transmission producing 401 hp and 464 lb/f. of torque, or a 6.6-litre Duramax turbo diesel engine that delivers 445 hp and a whopping 910 lb/ft of torque. That engine is paired with a new Allison 10-speed transmission developed specifically for heavy duty trucks. GMC noted the Allison transmission optimizes gear shifts to provide maximum power, torque and efficiency while offering a more comfortable ride. The light duty Sierra features a 3.0L Duramax turbo diesel engine matched to a 10-speed, automatic transmission. During a morning drive on Hwy. 89 along Snake River in Wyoming, I was behind the wheel of the 2500 Sierra AT4 with the 6.6-litre V8 gas engine. To show how the truck can handle heavy loads, GMC had loaded the back with 2,000 lb of wood. Much of Hwy. 89 is a single lane with a few areas for passing. Even loaded, the Sierra handled the slower traffic with ease. When I put my foot on the gas, the engine quickly responded and passing was a breeze. The cabin in the Sierra is massive. Yet even though it felt cavernous, all the controls were within easy reach, including the numerous onscreen buttons to switch the camera view. The rearview camera pops an image into the rearview mirror with a flip a switch. It offers a wider view of the traffic behind you in a high definition picture. During our first stop, GMC showed off the capabilities of the AT4, the premium off- road version of the truck. First test was a climb up a steep ramp made entirely of rocks. The instructor, the most patient man on the planet during a day of instructing journalists on the finer points of climbing, told us to keep a steady foot on the gas and because of the slope, keep our eyes on the forward camera on the screen. I’d like to report I handled the climb like a pro but that wasn’t the case. On the third try I reached the top and as we headed down the other side, the instructor ordered us to stop and take our foot of the gas. The hill assist held the truck in place until you either put your foot on the brake or the gas pedal. A quick trip through knee deep mud and over logs showed how the Sierra AT4 handled the rough terrain. Matt Noone, a design director with GMC, noted the AT4 designation was something “a group of customers” had asked for. The HD Sierra AT4 features all new architecture. “It’s bigger, larger and longer,” he said noting the AT4 sets “GMC up for an amazing future.” AT4 adds off-road suspension, traction select system, hill descent control and hill start assist, a 15-inch heads-up display and a number of upgrades inside the cabin such as a unique Jet Black interior. AT4 has been introduced in both the light and heavy-duty Sierra and the new Acadia and will be coming soon to the Yukon, Canyon and Terrain. During a stop for lunch, GMC gave journalists a chance to get out some aggression by letting them throw concrete blocks and even a chainsaw into the new CarbonPro box of the truck. A quick check of the new CarbonPro Box showed no scratches. Back in February I had a chance to drive the 2019 Sierra and write about the multi-purpose tailgate. It can be configured six different ways, all useful, and it is shocking that no one thought about this before. During the afternoon I drove a Sierra with a 3.0-litre Duramax turbo engine and while it didn’t respond as quickly as the gas engine, it also handled the slower traffic easily and gear changes were quick and responsive. While I’m not a truck guy I can see the appeal of the AT4 Sierra and the other innovations GMC is producing for its customers. If you do a lot of trailering, the transparent trailering is a Godsend. I doubt even Penn and Teller would be able to figure out how the cameras work to make what you’re towing invisible, so you can see what is behind you. The 2020 Sierra HD goes on sale later this year in 2500HD and 3500HD dual rear wheel and single rear wheel configurations. Margaret was the beloved mother of daughter Melissa-Jane, grandmother of Nash, mother to Douglas, mother-in- law to Ellen, grandmother to Taylor, Brooke and Grace. She was the daughter of the late James and Gladys Gentle of Parkdale, Toronto. Margaret was sister to the late Gordon, Ronald and Eleanor (Benson) and daughter-in-law of the late Francis Hamilton Smales (Annan). “Beautiful Auntie Margaret” will also be remembered fondly by Don, Jim, Craig, Rhonda and Gary. Marg lived a full and storied life. She grew up on Maplegrove Ave. in Parkdale, Toronto and in her later years, the family moved to Ashbury Ave. She got her first job at Campbell’s Soup, plucking chickens! She was 13 years old, and stuck it out for two whole days! As a young woman, she enjoyed dancing and socializing at the Sunnyside Pavilion. She attended the Royal Conservatory of Music for vocal studies expanding on her deep love of music. Marg was beautiful, smart, fierce, hard-working and above all, genuine. She left high school and then later completed a Comptometer Operator course and got her first full time office job at United Cigar Store. Marg never underestimated her abilities and replied to an ad for a job at the Canadian National Railway (CNR), and told them confidently that she was “very, very good” and they needed her. She was hired on the spot. Marg worked for the CNR until she was 33 years old, allowing her to travel across Canada and the U.S.A. and live for a brief time in Montreal. She left the company after meeting the love of her life, Pickering farmer Don Annan. Their connection was instantaneous and two and half months after meeting, the couple wed on March 17, 1962, and bought Valley Farm. The city girl with city style and stunning aqua blue eyes, transitioned easily to country living and family became the biggest part of her life. In 1963, she became mother to Melissa and Douglas in 1968. In the 1960’s Marg and Don built and owned Annandale Golf & Country Club. In 1978, Marg expanded her love of fashion. She sold stylish handbags and designer fashions out of the Annan home in the 1970s/80s under the umbrella of Annandale Boutique. In 1985, after several years of working together, Marg and her daughter, Melissa, opened Garbo’s Boutique in Downtown Whitby. Don farmed until his retirement in 1988. They then bought a condo in Hallandale Florida and happily became Snowbirds. They met wonderful friends and for the first time in their married life, had the freedom to travel, not having the responsibility of a farm. This was one of the most relaxing and happiest times of their lives. Marg came from humble beginnings. She was a business woman with flair and a networker like no other. She lit up a room with her sparkling blue eyes and her friendly, social nature. Her clients became friends. No job was beneath her (including plucking chickens!) and she treated every person with a consistent level of respect. Marg’s spirit and stories will live on in all of the people she has touched. The family would like to thank the Central East LHIN, VHA Home Health, the caring PSWs, Shamini Elangeethan RPN and Dr. L. Pedretti, for assisting Melissa and Nash in the past six months and giving Marg a dignified, peaceful passing surrounded by love. We also want to thank our friends and family for all of their love. We are forever grateful. "Welcomed and fed like family" is the tagline for Ba- toota's Food Truck, which celebrated its grand open- ing Sept. 7. Owner Emily Easa hadn't planned on a career in food. Until recently, she was working an office job ... and not loving it. "I was going nuts sitting behind a desk all day," she says. "So, I took leap of faith." Easa stumbled across the food truck for sale on Ki- jiji, and recruited her dad, Magdy Easa, to help with the cooking. He's no stranger to kitch- ens, having worked in the restaurant business for 40 years, including several years as the owner of El Stavro's steak house in Osh- awa. "We like to say this is steak house quality food, in a causal setting," Easa says, gesturing to the picnic ta- bles clustered around the food truck. The menu is an eclectic mix of dishes that reflects her Dutch and Egyptian background. If you're in the mood for something Dutch, there's bitterballen - described on Batoota's Facebook page as "beefy mashed potatoes in a deep fried ball of heaven" - and stroopwafel, which are homemade spice cookies with a caramel filling. Egyptian offerings in- clude the Kofta Burger, an Egyptian style beef patty topped with parsley, toma- to, onion, cucumber and ta- hini garlic sauce. "It's definitely one of the most popular items, which surprised us," Easa says of the burger. The menu is rounded out with wings, wraps and sandwiches. On Fridays, the special is fish and chips. The name of the truck and the smiling yellow duck on its logo are a nod to Easa herself - "batoota" is the Egyptian word for duckling and has been her nickname for as long as she can re- member. She says standing be- hind the counter of her own business is "unbelievable" and is excited to introduce customers to recipes that are near and dear to her heart. "This is food made with love," Easa says. You can find Batoota's Food Truck at 381 Taunton Rd. E. in Oshawa, between Ritson Road and Wilson Road. We want to hear about your favourite places to eat in Durham! Old favourites, hidden gems, new restau- rants opening, awesome food trucks. E. Telephone: 905-244-1404 Facebook: Batoota's Food Truck Every now and then, usually when I've started to believe my own press clippings, the universe will expeditiously and per- fectly reset my level. A cos- mic b****-slap, if you will. Last week Kathryn had politely and gently asked if the two of us could put the new curtain rod up in our library at some point. However, because I am a man and because it was a nice day when she made the request and I probably wanted to go the beach in- stead of entertaining the thought of any kind of chores, I only heard the words, "Put ... curtain rod ... up." And so, when she was out of the house for an afternoon a day or two lat- er, and when the weather was no good for doing any- thing fun, I put the curtain rod up. When Kathryn re- turned, she looked at my work and politely and gently informed me that I had perhaps put it up a lit- tle too low and that the rea- son she had wanted to help with the task was so that we might get the right lev- el for the curtains she'd purchased. However, be- cause I am a man and be- cause I have an ego that bruises easier than a Ro- manov, I heard "Hey dum- my! You did it wrong!" After peaking out on the Petul-ometer, I grabbed my tools ... again ... and set about undoing my work. I did not go about this gladly, happily appre- ciative of the fact that I get to live in a beautiful home with a woman who loves me and who wants to make that home even more beautiful and comfortable for the two of us. Nor was I anywhere close to delight- ing in the fact that my body and mind worked perfectly and wonderfully to enable the fine motor skills required of the job. Or even that when I was done, the beach would still be there, patiently waiting for me. No. I harrumphed and "Oh for Christ-saked" my way deeper and deeper in- to a funk, making dumber and dumber mistakes along the way. At one point I dropped my drill, bit-first and dug a nice chunk out of the laminate flooring. The aftershocks of that outburst resulted in the Wasagas first registered tsunami. Eventually even the dogs left the room. Looking back, of course, the whole episode seems terribly funny. But it wasn't at the time. It was dumb, unhealthy and most importantly, completely avoidable. But I guess it was necessary. Given my very human propensity to forget what is really im- portant in this life, I need these slaps back into con- sciousness every now and then. I need to be shown the kind of person I don't want to be in order to be re- minded of who I would like to be ... or more accurately, who I really am. In the great public school of the universe, I sometimes struggle with my home- work. Thank God I have a patient teacher. -Neil Crone, actor, comic, writer, saves some of his best lines for this column LEVELLED BY THE UNIVERSE OPINION COLUMNIST NEIL CRONE COMES CRASHING BACK TO EARTH AFTER CURTAIN ROD EPISODE NEIL CRONE Column 33 | Pi c k e r i n g N e w s A d v e r t i s e r | P | T h u r s d a y , S e p t e m b e r 1 9 , 2 0 1 9 dur h a m r e g i o n . c o m Expires September 26, 2019 Appointments are recommended, but not necessary Turn big purchases into small payments. The decision was made Sept. 11 by team owner Richard Pilosof after the Panthers dropped their first two games, 4-2 in Markham Sept. 6 and 5-2 in the home opener against Mississauga two days later. Pearson, an Oshawa na- tive and former National Hockey League player, had spent the past two seasons with the Fury, but parted ways after an ownership change in April. "This was a little sooner than I thought, to be hon- est, but I was very happy to get a call and very excited to be back in the league," said Pearson, who works for the Boyer Auto Group, the Panthers' major spon- sor. "It's a great fit for me." DeMarinis, who was en- tering his fourth year as head coach and third as GM, said he had some in- kling that a change might be made during the off-sea- son, but was caught off guard for it to happen once the current season began. A Pickering native, De- Marinis led the Panthers to a 26-24-1-3 record two sea- sons ago - the team's best result in a decade - and took the eventual league champion Wellington Dukes the full seven games in the opening round of the playoffs. Last season, the team slipped to 23-29-0-3 and missed the post-sea- son, but DeMarinis felt the team was set up well again for this season. "It's a little bit of a whirl- wind, it's disappointing," DeMarinis said when con- tacted the next day. "I be- lieve we did a really good job of turning the organiza- tion around and making it credible again, but it was the work of everybody and that's what I'm going to miss the most from this - the players and guys I worked with. That's going to be the tough part." The decision to fire De- Marinis comes less than three months after he pulled off a blockbuster trade with the Fury, ac- quiring defenceman Pat- rick Demaio and forwards Carson Gallagher, Shane Bull and Noah Bull in ex- change for defenceman Na- than Porter and forwards Ethan Doyle, Daniel Ebra- him and Riley Girard. Unfortunately for the Panthers, only Demaio re- ported to the team - and hasn't played yet due to in- jury - while all four who went the other way played in the Fury's opener. "If you asked me again, I thought it was a good hock- ey deal ... Everyone agreed with it," he said. "But it prob- ably comes and bites me in the rear end a little bit." Although disappointed at the timing and how it was handled, DeMarinis said he holds no grudge to- wards Pearson. "I have nothing but re- spect and admiration for him," he said. "Whenever you have a former NHL player and he did a great job in Whitby for two years, he's a really good coach, I guess it's always in the back of somebody's mind that he's available." Likewise, Pearson praised DeMarinis and the job he has done. "He's really put together a team for me to walk into and hopefully I can build of his success and what he's done here," he said. "The coaching business, and the GM business in the hockey world, it's crazy some days. I've been in that situation myself." PICKERING - Courtney Stott has nothing but fond memories of all sorts of ac- tivities in and around Frenchman's Bay growing up, but she took a particu- lar fondness to paddling. It was that love of the sport, in fact, that the 27- year-old Pickering resident credits as the genesis of her most impressive accom- plishment to date - helping to qualify in the women's K4 500-metre event for the 2020 Olympic Games in To- kyo. Stott, now a member of the Balmy Beach Canoe Club in Toronto, teamed up with Lissa Bissonnette of Quebec, Natalie Davison of Rideau, Ont., and Michelle Russell of Nova Scotia to finish 12th at the 2019 ICF Sprint/Paracanoe World Championships in Hunga- ry, and secure the berth. Although an Olympic qualification process with- in Canada still looms and her inclusion is not yet guaranteed, Stott is sa- vouring the moment. "Honestly, it's a relief and I feel like I can't stop smiling," she relayed dur- ing a rare moment back home in Pickering this month. "It feels like I have finally done something in my sport, so I'm proud and I'm proud of my teammates as well. It was a really sweet moment to share with people." Stott grew up in a house on the water in Pickering, with the bay on one side and Lake Ontario on the other. Although she dab- bled in other sports, in- cluding soccer, she much preferred spending time on the beach, and started com- peting with the Pickering Rouge Canoe Club at around age 13. As she grew more seri- ous by 18, she moved to the Burloak Canoe Club in Oakville, considered the best in Canada at the time, and then to the Balmy Beach Club, but she will al- ways have a soft spot for where she started. "What was really impor- tant was that it was fun," she recalled. "I think that's the most important aspect for a kid, is to enjoy it." Stott's younger brother, Jeremy, had also eyed the Olympic dream, in canoe, but no longer competes. Courtney, meanwhile, joined the national team in 2015 and has had solid re- sults at the world champi- onships three years run- ning. Funded by Canada's Ath- lete Assistance Program, she spends much of the year training, which typically sees her in Florida from January to April, Nova Sco- tia from June to August and some combination of the two in November and De- cember. With competitions all over the world on top of that, she has only parts of September and October as down time. "Obviously it's a bit more challenging and there are ups and downs in any sport, and life in gener- al, but, yes, I still love it," she said. "I've been just kind of taking it year by year," she added, in reference to her future. "I always told my- self that 2020 is the end, but who knows? I don't know if I'd go a whole other Olym- pic cycle, but maybe I'd do a few more world champion- ships just because I like the sport a lot." Pickering's Courtney Stott, in front, helped qualify a K4 boat for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. It's more than just a motto, it's a way of life in downtown Ajax, where the G Centre is fostering a new kind of office culture. Located in the area of Harwood Avenue and Bay- ly Street, the G Centre is a collaborative work envi- ronment. Inside are offices for big business, like Van Dusen Chevrolet Buick GMC and Gordon Foods, but there are also "hot desks" for entrepreneurs at the start of their business journey. Successful busi- ness cannot operate in a si- lo and this kind of work en- vironment encourages the sharing of expertise and re- sources, as well as foster- ing stronger relationships. While we continue to invest in hot desks, with 10 to 12 more spaces being created, our goal is to bring those entrepreneurs using the space to a corporate level. We have seen a number of our tenants outgrow the space. The G Centre sponsors business events, like the re- cent Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade 2019 Business Fo- rum, and offers services like our hot desks because of a belief that when busi- ness becomes a communi- ty, we all achieve greater success. Whether or not your business is able to partici- pate in a collaborative work environment, you should still be connecting with your fellow business leaders.
