DURHAM - The Ajax Picker-
ing Hospital Foundation is
pumped to start a new fundrais-
ing campaign.
Be Smart runs to March 2019,
with the aim of raising $500,000
to buy 100 new smart pumps.
Smart pumps are attached to
an IV pole and are programmed
with medicine dosages for the
patient. Each new unit costs
$5,000.
Foundation CEO Tracy Pat-
erson said, "The Foundation has
set the goal of fundraising for
100 of the over 225 smart pumps
needed for Ajax Pickering Hos-
pital. As the pump is found
throughout all our depart-

Canadian Union of
Postal Workers national
president Mike Palecek
called negotiations with
Canada Post "frustrat-
ing" July 13, and warned
residents the postal ser-
vice is forcing his bar-
g aining units to serious-
ly contemplate strike ac-
tion. About 50,000 postal
workers have been with-
out a collective agree-
ment since the winter.
The sides have met to
discuss a new deal more
than 100 times. However,
the union is setting a fi-
nal strike vote for Sept. 9.
"This round of bar-
g aining is likely going to
define the postal service
going forward for a gen-
eration," Palecek said in
an interview. "We're put-
ting all kinds of issues on
the bargaining table that
are not just for ourselves
but the public as well.
Postal workers have done
absolutely everything in
their power to address
these without a labour
dispute. We campaigned,
we organized town hall
meetings, we changed the
government. Still, noth-
ing has happened. We're
on to our last resort: a
strike. That's where Can-
ada Post is driving us."
Canada Post "set us on
to this path" through an
"absolute refusal" to ne-
gotiate, he said.
Philipe Legault, a
spokesperson for Canada
Post, said a mediator was
brought into the collec-
tive bargaining process
in late 2017. However, the
postal service will not
comment on specific as-
pects of negotiations.
"Canada Post negotiators
are working hard to find
common ground with
CUPW and believe a
quick resolution is in the
best interest of custom-
ers and employees," he
said in an email.
A number of issues
built up over the last few
years because the previ-
ous Conservative govern-
ment refused to negotiate
with the union, Palecek
said. About 8,000 of the
employees work in a ru-
ral or suburban setting,
with the majority being
women. They are paid
about 30 per cent less
than their 42,000 urban-
area counterparts.
The union is also
pushing for the establish-
ment of a Canada Post
bank, electrification of
the postal service's
13,000-vehicle fleet, and
installation of electric
vehicle-charging sta-
tions at post offices
across the country.
"This is an opportuni-
ty to bring in new servic-
es that will not only bring
in revenue but that the
public actually needs,"
Palecek said.

Barb Mitchell, the clin-
ical practice leader at the
hospital, said the compa-
ny that manufactures the
pumps "calls them a
guardrail: it stops you
from veering off into the
ditch.
"There's a drug library
embedded in it, and it's
preprogrammed," Mitch-
ell added, noting there's a
safety feature so a patient
doesn't receive the wrong
dosage.
Someone who is sup-
posed to get five milli-
litres of a drug, but inad-
vertently 55 mL is en-
tered, the pump will ask if
that is the correct dosage,
she said.
"It keeps us honest.
Things can go wrong. If
you get tired, distracted.
It's a little safer for the pa-
tient," Mitchell noted.
Each pump can be con-
nected to Wi-Fi so "we can
keep the drug library up
to date," she said. "We can
upgrade it fairly quickly.
It can all be done wireless-
ly. It's cool."
She said the pumps
now being used "aren't
half as good as the ones
coming."
An education session
on the new pumps is being
planned for September.
"We'll roll it out all at
once. It can't be piece-
meal; we have to do it all at
once," she said.
"The practice now ev-
eryone has a pump and we
don't rely on gravity. The
drugs are so finely tuned,
we can't use the gravity
method," she said.
When she started in
her career, drugs were in
a bag hanging on a pole.
The nurse would count
the drops to ensure the pa-
tient received the proper
amount of medicine.
"That was the science
behind it. We know how
much drops make up a
millilitre. It was all about
counting drops," she said.
The biggest impact for
patients "will be greater
safety," she said. "They
will minimize, decrease
medical errors, which is a
real thing that happens in
hospitals. It will change
the environment."
Mitchell added, "They
will increase the safety
setting on a pole like we
have now."
The battery-powered
units are mobile, so a pa-
tient can move around
with them.
"From a safety point of
view, it's major for (pa-
tients). There's less
chance of an error. We can
feel a little more confident
and safe," she said.
"They're like little com-
puters: it will alert me and
tell me to make sure I dou-
ble-check them. It's a little
important piece of infor-
mation programmed in."
"If I hit the key pad a lit-
tle too hard, it will catch
one, say 'You sure that's
what you want to do?' No-
body wants to make that
medical error," Mitchell
said.

PICKERING - Pickering
Fire Services, Enbridge
Gas Distribution and the
Fire Marshal's Public Fire
Safety Council recently an-
nounced they are partner-
ing to improve home safety,
in hopes of bringing fire
and carbon monoxide-re-
lated deaths down to zero.
Pickering Fire Services
received 264 combination
smoke and carbon monox-
ide alarms through Project
Zero, a public education
campaign delivered in
partnership by Enbridge
and the FMPFSC. This
year, Enbridge invested
$200,000 in Project Zero,
providing more than 6,600
alarms to residents in 30
Ontario municipalities. To
date, Project Zero has given
out over 34,000 alarms to
Ontario fire departments
for distribution in their cit-
ies.
Carbon monoxide is a
toxic, odourless gas that is
a byproduct of incomplete
combustion of many types
of common fuels. It is im-
portant that all fuel-burn-
ing equipment be properly
maintained to prevent car-
bon monoxide buildup.
Carbon monoxide alarms
are recommended as a sec-
ond line of defence to pro-
tect against the dangers of
carbon monoxide poison-
ing. When properly in-
stalled and maintained,
combination smoke and
carbon monoxide alarms
help provide the early
warning that is needed to
safely escape from a house
fire, or carbon monoxide
exposure.

WHO WE ARE
OPINION
•LETTERS & COMMENTARY •
I was wondering the oth-
er day: What's wrong with
trying to help everybody?
What really would be
the problem in being the
city, or province or nation
that genuinely believed
that taking care of those in
need is never a bad thing
and that when you raise
one person up, we are all el-
evated?
Because when you ig-
nore, dismiss and despise
those in need, you dimin-
ish yourself. You and your
city, your province, your
nation, become less. Much
less.
I have personally never
minded being thought a
fool or a chump or a sucker
for trying to help another
fellow traveller on this
globe. I frankly can't think
of a more noble or valuable
enterprise.
Ironically, there is a cer-
tain selfishness involved in
giving. Very often I do it be-
cause I feel better having
done so. I get something
out of it. I am a larger, bet-
ter version of myself.
And the thing is, it mat-
ters not if I have been
fooled or had or taken ad-
vantage of. The benefit to
myself is the same, regard-
less. There is never any
downside to acting out of
love.
So, wouldn't it be great if
our leaders did that?
Acted out of love?
If, instead of thinking
small, angry, hateful
thoughts and creating pol-
icies based on fear, short-
age and suspicion, they
were men and women of
great vision. People with
enormous hearts who
thought globally. Who real-
ized that by raising up one,
we are all brought higher.
Who acted out of love. Love
for everyone on the planet
and love for the planet, her-
self. I would love to be that
nation.
To that end, I think we
need to hold our leaders to
a much different and high-
er standard. In fact, I think
we need to hold each other
to that same standard.
If you must be intoler-
ant ... be intolerant of hate,
of fear of pettiness and my-
opia. Cast your lot with big
thinkers and big lovers.
Ask more of people in gen-
eral.
Expect more from them.
And act out of love. Always
from love.
Everyone has gold in-
side of them somewhere;
they just need to be re-
minded of it from time to
time.

Sex-ed letter
a hysterical reaction

To the editor:
Re: Sex-ed isn't going to
turn you gay, letters, dur-

"For those of us in the
lesbian, gay, bisexual,
trans and queer (LGBTQ)
community, this is a night-
mare scenario as far as pol-
itics goes." Indeed!
If Doug Ford is guilty of
the "courting of a virulent-
ly homophobic and tran-
sphobic conservative base"
then why did he get rid of
sex-ed critic Tanya Granic
Allen right after she boost-
ed him into the leadership
position?
"Removing sex-ed and
LGBTQ material from edu-
cational institutions is an
act of discrimination
against our community"?
Leaving it in may well cre-
ate gender confusion
among "straight" children,
who constitute the vast ma-
jority of our younger stu-
dents.
If our "LGBTQ commu-
nity" is so upset about los-
ing control of sex-ed con-
tent, one may reasonably
wonder what their agenda
is; this surprisingly hyster-
ical reaction certainly in-
vites speculation.

To the editor:
I wonder if the people
who are in charge of Elec-
tions Ontario can reform
the way we cast our votes?
For instance, in the
first-past-the-post system
we use today if you want a
certain person to become
premier of Ontario you
have to vote for your local
person of the same party.
This is blatantly unfair for
everybody!
A lot of people did not
want to vote for Kathleen
Wynne because they had
had enough of her. A lot of
people voted for Doug Ford
because he could do no
worse than Wynne (or so
they thought). Then again
a lot of people voted for An-
drea Horwath but not
enough voted NDP in their
ridings for them to win.
They became the official
opposition.
What I would like to see,
as I am sure a great many
others, is a way to vote for
someone you like who is
running but not necessari-
ly that party! That way you
may get a person who you
like of a different party
than the one in power or
even the premier! I do not
know how that would
work, but I believe it could
be done if only there was
some kind of electoral re-
form. I guess that will not
happen until there are
more people who think the
way I do.
Ron Horner,
Oshawa

DURHAM - GO Transit
and UP Express are
launching a pilot project
that will allow dogs on
trains outside of office
hours.
According to Metrolinx,
the pilot project is in re-
sponse to a petition started
by a GO Transit rider ask-
ing for a review of the orga-
nization's pet policy.
Metrolinx reviewed its
own policies, as well as the
policies of other transit sys-
tems related to pets, and
spoke with both dog lovers
and people who didn't want
dogs on the train.
As a result, a new pilot
project, running from July
20 to Oct. 15, will allow cus-
tomers to bring up to two
leashed dogs on GO and UP
trains outside of rush hour,
which is between 9:30 a.m.
and 3:30 p.m. and after 6:30
p.m. on weekdays and from
any time on weekends and
holidays.
The dogs and the owner
must ride on the lower lev-
els of the trains and cus-
tomers are asked to clean
up any accidents, disposing
the garbage when they get
off the train. They're also
asked to keep dogs off seats
and to give people with ac-
cessibility needs priority in
the accessible coach.
During rush hour only,
dogs that can fit in a carrier
on the customer's lap or un-
der seats are allowed. All
other pets - including birds,
rodents and reptiles - must
be in carriers at all times.
Service animals are wel-
come on board all day and
every day, say Metrolinx of-
ficials but they must be
wearing a vest and have
identification from an ac-
credited training organiza-
tion.
Metrolinx will collect
customer feedback during
the pilot project which will
inform future plans.
DURHAM
GO Transit user Kimberly Fleming launched a petition in August 2017 to allow
dogs on GO trains. As of 2018, from July 20 to October 15, dogs will be allowed
on the GO Train on leashes instead of in a carrier as a pilot project.

AJAX - Unionized workers at
Casino Ajax could be on the picket
lines on Monday, July 23.
Represented by Unifor Local
1090, the workers voted 99 per cent
in favour of strike action if a deal
can't be reached by then.
"Unifor members are pivotal to
the success of Casino Ajax," said
Unifor National president Jerry
Dias. "They deserve a fair con-
tract and decent wages."
The casino is operated by
Great Canadian Gaming, a B.C.-
based company.
Christine Pickard, general
manager of Casino Ajax, said in a
statement, "Out of respect for the
bargaining process, we will not be
commenting specifically on the
negotiations with Unifor. We are
hopeful that a collective agree-
ment will be reached. Casino Ajax
remains focused on continuing to
deliver a great guest experience."
The union is seeking a commit-
ment from Great Canadian Gam-
ing that Casino Ajax Unifor mem-
bers can transfer to the proposed
Durham Live facility in Pickering
under their existing collective
agreement.
The union is also seeking a
wage increase, saying the work-
ers have only had an increase of
1.75 per cent over the last eight
years.
"This strike mandate sends a
strong, clear message to the em-
ployer that Casino Ajax members
are behind their bargaining com-
mittee," said Corey Dalton, presi-
dent of Local 1090.
Local 1090 and Casino Ajax are
bargaining simultaneously with
Great Blue Heron in Port Perry,
Woodbine Security (Toronto), El-
ements Casino Mohawk (Camp-
bellville), and Elements Casino
Brantford (Brantford). All of the
facilities are represented by Un-
ifor, with all collective agree-
ments set to expire at 12:01 a.m. on
July 23.
"A strike is almost always a last
resort, but Great Canadian Gam-
ing has left us few options," said
Roy McDonald, chair of Local
1090s Ajax unit. "If the company
makes serious offers that respect
the work done by Unifor mem-
bers, I'm confident we can negoti-
ate a new contract without an in-
terruption in service to our val-
ued customers."
Unifor Local 1090 represents
225 members at Casino Ajax
working at slot machines, food
and beverage, cashiers, guest ser-
vices, environmental services,
shuttles, maintenance, and the
kitchen.
