DURHAM - It wasn't the
showdown people were expect-
ing.
About 300 people turned out
to the Ajax-Pickering Board of
Trade's annual mayors' break-
fast at Deer Creek Golf and Ban-
quet Facility, perhaps anticipat-
ing a debate between Ajax Mayor
Steve Parish and Pickering May-
or Dave Ryan about the location
of a casino. It didn't happen, al-
though they did spar briefly
about the Durham Live proposal
when asked a question about
transportation issues.
"I welcome such a large
crowd. I wonder if something is
going on," Parish quipped when
Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan answered questions from members of the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade during the annual Mayors'
Breakfast held at Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facility April 12. Both he and Ajax Mayor Steve Parish spoke.

DURHAM - Two Ajax brothers facing
dozens of charges relating to a string of
violent carjackings last year remain in
custody as their case makes its way
through the courts.
Trevell and Trenell Ottley appeared
briefly in court Thursday, April 12 follow-
ing a judicial pretrial meeting involving
lawyers and a judge. They were remand-
ed to May 10, when it's expected there will
be a clearer picture of how the case will
proceed.
It should be decided by then if the
brothers will go directly to trial or seek a
preliminary hearing, prosecutor Mitch-
ell Flagg said.
Trenell, 24, and his brother, 22-year-
old Trevell, face more that 60 charges re-
lating to a series of robberies and car-
jackings, the majority of which occurred
between Oct. 12, when a man and woman
were abducted and forced to drive to an
ATM and withdraw cash, until the arrest
of the two suspects in late November.
Police investigated a number of simi-
lar incidents in which people were ac-
costed and sometimes assaulted as they
left or got into their cars. In some cases
vehicles were stolen and later recovered
in Ajax.
The brothers were arrested after a taxi
driver was robbed on Nov. 28 at Ajax
Downs casino. They had been under sur-
veillance by cops investigating the crime
spree, Durham police confirmed.
The Ottleys were denied release on
bail following a hearing in December.

he spoke prior to Ryan's
address.
Parish didn't discuss
the casino issue at all in his
remarks, but Ryan opened
by talking about it.
Ryan said he would be
giving "one of the most ex-
citing updates in years.
"It's been almost six
years since Councillor
(Kevin) Ashe and Council-
lor (David) Pickles
brought Steve Apostolo-
poulos of Triple Properties
to my office and pitched
me on the idea of a casino. I
wasn't interested in a stan-
dalone box in a field. It
didn't do anything for me,
and outside of potential
gaming revenues, it didn't
add much value to the
greater community," Ryan
said.
The next time Ryan met
with the trio, they had the
concept of Durham Live,
which included the casino,
but also a hotel, conven-
tion centre, film studios,
water park, restaurants
and an office tower.
"Now this was some-
thing truly special. When I
took in all of the economic,
tourism and job-creation
potential of a project of
this size and scale, I be-
came a Durham Live
champion," he said.
"I know there's been a
lot of noise about the casi-
no and whether or not it
should stay in Ajax or
come to Pickering. Howev-
er, if you filter out all of the
noise, it really is a clear
and simple matter," he not-
ed. "Great Canadian Gam-
ing was awarded the GTA
Gaming Bundle and was
given a mandate by OLG to
maximize revenues."
The process for select-
ing Durham Live was open
and transparent, he said.
When questioned, Par-
ish said the Durham Live
proposal relies on a partial
interchange at Church
Street, adding there's al-
ready gridlock issues on
Bayly Street.
"It will be traffic chaos,"
he said, noting the Ajax
site is close to highways 401
and 412.
He said there's "no pro-
vision" in provincial plans
to construct an inter-
change at Church.
Ryan said the inter-
change would be "fully
funded by the developer.
There's not a single cent
from the taxpayers."
In his address, Parish
said, "It struck me that it is
very clear 2018 will be a
year of profound change in
this region and province.
A provincial election is
coming soon, and our mu-
nicipal election is coming.
We don't know what will
happen in these elections."
A day after the break-
fast, Parish announced he
would not be seeking re-
election as mayor of Ajax.
It's possible there will
be a change in government
at Queen's Park, he said.
"It's noted, with the
tragedy of the passing of
Roger Anderson, there
will be a newly elected re-
gional chair and at least
one-third or 50 per cent of
regional council will be
new bodies starting next
term," he said.
He noted Ajax is "the
largest municipality in
Canada and maybe North
America to have full inter-
net and phone voting. It
has increased voter turn-
out, and it's made voting
much more easy.
"We have a great finan-
cial sustainability plan,
which makes sure our fis-
cal practices are best prac-
tices. We have strong re-
serves and low debt," he
said.
He said the town has
been an environmental
leader for years.
He added that the wa-
terfront is "under threat"
by algae, which the town
contends comes from
phosphorous from the
Duffin Creek Water Pollu-
tion Control Plant. Tertia-
ry treatment could remove
almost all the phospho-
rous, he said.
"Huge algae blooms are
fouling our waterfront. We
have the capability to
make that right. We've
seen what happened in
Lake Erie," he said.
Ryan noted, on the air-
port, "After more than 40
years, Pickering Council
has finally taken a positive
position on the proposed
airport. We have conclud-
ed that an airport is very
much needed to unlock the
full economic potential of
the federal lands, and it's
time that we advocate for
what we believe to be in the
best interests of Pickering,
Durham Region, Ontario
and, indeed, Canada."
Pickering is less than 30
minutes away from Pear-
son airport when using
Highway 407.
Pickering is "the perfect
location for a secondary
airport. There is no other
suitable location that
could serve the GTA catch-
ment area," Ryan said.

PICKERING - Pickering
council has officially re-
fused a developer's zoning
bylaw amendment applica-
tion to build a condo on the
waterfront.
A numbered company,
2388116 Ontario Inc., wish-
es to build an eight-storey
condo with 118 units be-
tween Wharf and Annland
streets and west of Liver-
pool Road. The developer
has appealed the applica-
tion to the Ontario Munici-
pal Board on the grounds
that the city did not make a
decision within the allotted
time frame.
Pickering's refusal was
passed at the council meet-
ing on April 10, mostly as
an official stance going for-
ward at the OMB, and to
authorize staff, and outside
legal council and experts,
to defend council's position
at the proceedings.
The two sides have met
at the OMB once, and a sec-
ond pre-hearing date is set
for Aug. 14.
"I think the public has
spoken loud and clear in
this area that we do not
want this kind of develop-
ment taking place and bog-
ging up what is in fact a
congested area of Picker-
ing," Ward 2 city Coun. Ian
Cumming said at the plan-
ning and development
committee it was initially
passed at.
A number of residents
attended in support of
council's position and
spoke as to why they be-
lieve the development isn't
appropriate for the area.
"I've seen every critter
you can imagine except
moose and bear," said Da-
vid Frampton.
He does not want the ar-
ea to end up like the west
end of Toronto, and noted
he hasn't seen any major
improvements to the sewer
lines, adding underground
infrastructure would be a
problem.
He said the condo would
bring an extra 200 vehicles
to the area.
"Now the elephant in
the room is the big plant
down there," he said.
He acknowledged an ac-
cident at the Pickering Nu-
clear Generating Station is
unlikely, but said if there
ever were one, "nobody is
getting out with that many
cars down there."
The developer's repre-
sentative John McDermot-
t of McDermott and Associ-
ates Limited attended the
meeting and said his client
has received demeaning
and "somewhat threaten-
ing" correspondence relat-
ed to the proposal.
"I would urge those in
attendance tonight and
who are responsible for
such correspondence to
conduct themselves ac-
cordingly," he said.
Resident Thomas Dal-
zell pointed out the person
could have been anyone,
and not necessarily some-
one in attendance.
Cumming agreed hate
mail is wrong, but said he's
found the residents have
shown good behaviour in
this frustrating time at the
public meetings.
"I thank the residents of
Frenchman's Bay and the
lower half of Liverpool
Road for coming out and
for being so restrained in
their approach," he said. "I
think that's the intelligent
way to do it."
There was some debate
between council and
McDermott as to whether
the plans for the area meet
provincial standards for
intensification.
McDermott added ac-
cording to the conceptual
block plan, visual corri-
dors have been enhanced
and maintained and it
would provide for a greater
public open space area.
He said traffic and park-
ing issues already exist,
problems the municipality
should address.
"I think there has to be a
co-ordinated solution," he
said.

Council confirms opposition to waterfront condo
KRISTEN CALIS

PICKERING - It was
standing room only at the
Ontario Municipal Board
pre-hearing regarding a
proposed development on
Pickering's waterfront.
Ward 2 city Coun. Ian
Cumming guessed there
were between 120 and 150
people in attendance at
the pre-hearing in Picker-
ing council chambers on
March 21 to show their op-
position to a proposal for
an eight-storey condo de-
velopment on Wharf
Street, west of Liverpool
Road and steps away from
Frenchman's Bay.
The developer is a
numbered company,
2388116 Ontario Inc.
The area is currently
comprised of detached
dwellings, boat and other
storage facilities, as well
as overflow parking for
Port restaurant.
The applicant had ap-
plied to the City of Picker-
ing for an Official Plan
amendment to redesig-
nate the lands from open
space system - marina ar-
eas and urban residential
areas - low density areas
to urban residential areas
-high density areas.
The city did not make a
decision in the required
180-day time frame, so the
developer filed an appeal
with the board, which will
make a decision on the
matter.
Residents lined up to
register as participants at
the pre-hearing, so they
can speak on the issue
when the hearing re-
sumes.
The number of partici-
pants hasn't yet been re-
vealed, but several pages
contained names.
Counsel for the devel-
oper asked that the next
pre-hearing date be set in
May or June, since the de-
velopment proposal has
been before the city for
quite some time, but the
city's representative said
he needed more time to
g et staff's recommenda-
tions regarding the pro-
posal.
The city is opposed to
the development.
On Feb. 5, council sup-
ported a motion by Ward 2
regional Coun. Bill
McLean and Coun. Cum-
ming to give staff direc-
tion to hire outside legal
council to defend the
city's position in opposi-
tion to this application.
Richard Jones presid-
ed over the meeting, re-
presenting the OMB, and
set a second pre-hearing
date for Aug. 14, at 10 a.m.
again at Pickering City
Hall.
On that date, the hear-
ing date should be set,
which Jones said will
most likely occur in 2019
as the OMB's schedule is
quite packed.

WHO WE ARE
We have a hockey stick
sitting outside our front
door. Kathryn put it there
as a sign of love and re-
membrance to those lost,
injured and grieving in
Saskatchewan. We live at
the end of a single-track,
dead end cottage lane. It's
unlikely more than a hand-
ful of people will see our
hockey stick, but still, it
feels like it's important.
Putting it there has given
us a small measure of
peace, has eased a little of
our heartache over this
tragedy. Collectively
though, these hockey
sticks on porches, these
small bits of peace, have a
remarkable power. I've said
it many times before in
these pages and it's well
worth repeating; we are all
connected. There is an un-
derlying spirit or con-
sciousness that joins all of
us. It's the thing that ani-
mates us, inspires us and
creates our realities. It's
why our two hearts up here
on this little lake in Grav-
enhurst break at the news
of a tragedy thousands of
miles away. And it's why we
feel compelled to do some-
thing, anything, to help
with the healing. We are all
one.
The majesty and the
magic of that overwhelms
me sometimes. As does the
responsibility that comes
with it. The responsibility
to love, to pay attention, to
respond in any loving way
we can, to beam our hearts'
energy toward goodness,
hope and healing. To keep
the earth spinning in the
direction of God. We do this
with every kind word, with
every good thought, with
every handshake, hug, kiss
and loving look. These are
powerful tools and they are
available to us all and they
are felt by us all. The ener-
gy of that love is never
wasted or lost. It knows ex-
actly where it needs to go.
Sorrowful, seemingly
inexplicable, tragedies oc-
cur in this world from time
to time and many of us are
left weeping and shaking
our heads in bewilder-
ment. We feel, deeply, the
ripple in the unified field of
human consciousness and
we are compelled to do
something. But what?
Love, I think. The answer
is always, love. Love in a
kind thought, a prayer, and
yes, even a hockey stick on
a porch.
–Neil Crone, actor, comic,
writer, saves some of his
best lines for this column
A hockey
stick on
a porch
As a physician, and a
proud Canadian, I'm grate-
ful to live in a country where
everyone has access to
health-care services. Until
recently, however, one as-
pect of our system has been
somewhat overlooked - resi-
dential hospice care. In the
words of one woman with a
palliative diagnosis as she
arrived at a hospice centre
surrounded by family, "I still
have a lot of living to do."
Living, not dying.
Despite the benefits of
residential hospice care, for
residents and their family
members, Durham Region
remains one of the only com-
parable regions in the prov-
ince without this essential
resource. The good news is
that governments around
the world are now recogniz-
ing the value of hospice care
centres with the province
recently announcing sup-
port for 20 residential hos-
pice beds in Durham Region.
Recently, Durham Re-
gion Hospice, a partnership
between Durham Hospice
and VON Durham Commu-
nity Corporation, launched
Comfort, Care, Compassion,
a capital campaign to raise
$15 million toward the con-
struction of residential hos-
pice centres in Clarington
and Whitby. The campaign
is running in tandem with
the Building for Compas-
sionate Care capital cam-
paign in support of Oak
Ridges Hospice in Port Per-
ry.
Focused on living by em-
powering individuals with a
palliative diagnosis to
choose how they navigate
their final journey while
helping their families cope
with and prepare for their fi-
nal stages of life, residential
hospice provides care - at no
cost to residents or their
family members - in a sup-
portive, flexible and home-
like environment. An inter-
disciplinary team of health-
care professionals provide
pain and symptom manage-
ment, and staff and commu-
nity volunteers offer pro-
grams and services to en-
sure comfort, care and com-
passion for all residents.
Once constructed, each
hospice will offer private
rooms, free parking, unre-
stricted visiting hours and
the ability to live freely.

gion Hospice, visit

Ajax Mayor Steve Parish gets set to cut the ribbon at the official grand opening of Firearms Outlet
Canada in Ajax recently. The 15,000-square foot facility includes a store and coming soon, indoor
firing range. Also pictured are, directly to the Mayor’s right, Fred Pellegrino, owner of FOC, Iris
Nicolaison, Business Development Manager with the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade and store staff.
To the Mayor’s left are Ontario PC Ajax riding candidate Rod Phillips, and Mrs. and Mr. Wang, plaza
owners. Pictured in the back are staff members, suppliers and friends and family. FOC would like to
thank the 5,500+ people who came from all over Ontario and beyond in support of our opening!
FOC is located at 282 Monarch Ave., Unit 25, West side of the building, Ajax.

AJAX - One of Toronto's
top Realtors is also hoping
to have a top anthem. Sa-
cha Singh of Ajax has writ-
ten a new song about the
Toronto Raptors called Fix
Yuh.
Singh said, "The Fix Yuh
chant, or 'Come into the 6ix
and we'll Fix Yuh' chant,
means we will have an im-
pact on you. This city will
have an impact on you,
whether it's through sports
or coming into the city to
visit, we'll leave an impact
on you."?
Singh first wrote the
song a year-and-a-half ago
while packing his bag to go
to the gym. He had been at
a Raptors game the day be-
fore and a rhythm popped
into his head. He thought it
would make a good "hype
song" for the team.
When he was younger,
Singh worked in the music
industry. He worked with
other artists and tried to be
a musician himself. With
the song, he wanted to
teach young people to be
persistent and not give up
on their dreams.
After he had the idea, he
contacted a producer and
started working on the
song. He wasn't originally
going to voice it but was en-
couraged to keep his track.
"The song was basically
inspired by the city of To-
ronto and the Raptors,"
Singh said.
Nothing happened with
the song after that, until
this February when Tan-
isha Scott, a choreogra-
pher who's worked with Ri-
hanna, Cardi B and Drake,
heard the song.
She gave Singh encour-
agement to do something
with the song. He sent her
conceptual visuals of what
the song might look like as
a video. After seeing that,
she wanted to get on board
to choreograph it.
Then Singh started put-
ting the "Krush Dem Krew"
together, which are what
Singh calls everyone who
was involved in the video.
He said, "The 'Krush
Dem Krew' just came out of
nowhere. It came from a
sports theme, of other
teams coming to play us.
We're going to crush them."
Scott partnered with an-
other choreographer,
Mark Samuels, who cho-
reographed a majority of
the song with Scott's input,
as Scott was out of the
country. She later flew in
for the filming of the video.
Caitlin Wright, a Toron-
to stylist, wanted the danc-
ers to have a "tough-chic
look," according to Singh.
"We wanted them to
look like tough girls who
can handle anything," said
Singh.
The dancers started the
choreography at 10 p.m.
and danced in the rain and
cold until 5 a.m. Singh said
they always had a smile on
their face.
From the time Singh de-
cided to create a music vid-
eo for Fix Yuh, and the day
they filmed it, 35 days had
passed.
"Everyone in this pro-
ject is from Toronto," said
Singh.
A former Raptor and
team consultant, Jamaal
Magloire, was on set for the
filming. Toronto rappers
Dream Warriors and Mi-
chie Me made cameos in
the video.
Singh will not be fea-
tured in the video.
He says, "This is not
about me. It's about the city
and the Raptors. It's a pas-
sion project that I want
people to know about."
Singh said the video is
set to be released next
week, he hopes for Wednes-
day, April 18.
Currently, Singh has
uploaded a promo video for
the full song on YouTube. It
has more than 500,000
views.
He said the feedback has
been positive.
"The feedback's been
great. People are really ex-
cited and pumped. They
can't wait to hear it in the
stadium," Singh said.
He agrees. He says he
will keep promoting the
song until it hopefully ends
up playing at a game.

Durham Region Association of Realtors Announces Winner of
2018 W. Paul Ristow Founder’s Cup and Community Spirit Award
Community Spirit Award
The DRAR Community Spirit Award was created to recognize the exceptional
community volunteer contributions from the past year of a member of the Durham
Region Association of REALTORS®.
This award will be presented to a Member who has made exceptional commu-
nity volunteer contributions during the year; who may or may not necessarily be an
active DRAR Volunteer. All submissions received were very worthy, but there was a
Member with exceptional volunteer contributions in our community.
Michael Baird, the recipient of the Community Spirit Award, has for several years
now, run a successful golf tournament donating all proceeds to Clarington Central
Lunch Buddies and Hearth Place. Last year, the tournament raised an impressive
$9,000. He regularly pays to feed the rst 100 people in line at St. Vincent’s Kitchen
and has recently started a local coat drive, collecting 250 coats so far for people in
need. He is a weekly volunteer at YMCA and regularly participates in events with the
Lunch Buddies.
Everything he does is done to help others and we believe his community spirit is
very commendable.
W. Paul Ristow
Durham Region Association of REALTORS® (DRAR) was founded in 1954
by W. Paul Ristow who, along with a group of Brokers, met out of a common
interest to address the growing need for establishing real estate standards in
Eastern Ontario.
After his death, the Ristow family donated the W. Paul Ristow Founder’s Cup,
which is presented annually at the DRAR Spring AGM to a Director or Commit-
tee member whose commitment and service to the Association was exem-
plary.
Rick Siwek, the recipient of the W. Paul Ristow Founders Cup, has been a
Member of DRAR’s Finance Committee for the last 3 years. Rick is always will-
ing to o er their expertise, whenever it is needed, concerning the nancial
and legal aspects of running a business. Last year, he played an integral role in
assisting the Association to secure the new Richmond Street Unit and to help
ensure DRAR was scally responsible throughout the process. He was also
heavily involved with the DRAR O ce telephone system upgrade.

PICKERING - Big things
are on the horizon in an ar-
ea expected to spur future
job growth and economic
development along High-
way 407 in Durham Region.
The Pickering Innova-
tion Corridor is comprised
of 800 acres of provincially
owned land along Hwy. 407
between York-Durham
Townline Road and Brock
Road.
A tractor and heavy
equipment manufacturer
has announced it will be
moving its head office and
warehouse operations to a
new facility in the area by
the end of 2019.
Kubota Canada Ltd.
(KCL), a subsidiary of Kubo-
ta Corporation in Japan,
has operated in Canada
from Markham since 1975.
The project is expected to
cost $67 million for the 50
acres of land it purchased
and the building.
"Pickering was selected
as our future head office lo-
cation because it provides a
great sense of community
and lends itself perfectly to
our growing technological
advancements," said Bob
Hickey, president of KCL.
"Our new location will en-
able us to have easy access
to highways, affordable
housing for our employees,
as well as to equipment test-
ing and training areas."
The surface area will be
565,500 square feet with the
opportunity to increase to
one million. KCL plans to
grow from 190 current em-
ployees to 250 by 2027.
Red Crest Developments
will be building two adja-
cent office buildings for a
combined 300,000 square
feet. There will be opportu-
nities for businesses to lease
office space. Also, the Behar
Group will be building a
four-star hotel with an ad-
joining convention centre
that will be 30,000 square
feet.
Pickering purchased se-
lect prime acreage in the
Pickering Innovation Corri-
dor from the province in or-
der to market, sell and man-
age the economic develop-
ment opportunity.
"The City of Pickering's
bold and innovative ap-
proach of purchasing and
managing a portion of these
provincial lands was instru-
mental in signing the inno-
vation corridor's first an-
chor tenants. It demon-
strates that we're hungry
and are willing to do what it
takes to earn your busi-
ness," said Mayor Dave
Ryan. "More importantly,
these initial investments
will kickstart immense
commercial and industrial
growth along Highway 407,
which will create thousands
of new jobs and strengthen
both Pickering and Dur-
ham's economy over the
next two decades."

Harness the power
of plants and reap
important health
benefits urges
Dr. Jessica Ross
Eat your vegetables.
When it came to your health, mom
and dad hit this nail on the head. And
their wisdom still holds true: adopting a
more herbivorous lifestyle is one of the
best lifestyle changes you can make to
improve your physical and mental well-
being. So harness the power of plants
and reap these important health benefits.
Live longer. Evidence continues to
mount in support of the Mediterranean
diet, which consists of vegetables and
fruits, nuts and seeds, legumes, soy,
whole grains, herbs, spices and olive oil.
Plants provide the majority of protein,
with some fish in the mix. Sweets and
processed foods are a rarity. Following
this diet reduces your risk of heart dis-
ease and cancer; in fact, you may live up
to two years longer. Plus, your mind and
body both stay fitter as you age.
Get your vitamins. A third of Canadians
don’t get adequate magnesium, calcium
and vitamin A. Many are also deficient
in vitamin C, zinc, vitamin B6... the list
continues. The overly-processed, nutri-
ent-sparse western diet lacks the neces-
sary vitamins and minerals for optimal
health. Yet a cup of spinach contains over
100-per cent of your recommended daily
intake of vitamins A and C. A handful of
pumpkin seeds bring home 20-per cent
of your required magnesium. Bottom
line? Plants are nature’s multivitamins.
Lose weight. That’s right. Not only will
you be healthier, you’ll look and feel
the part too. Research shows that those
who abide by a Mediterranean diet are
less likely to develop obesity. If they’re
already overweight, they’re more likely
to lose weight. When it comes to animal
protein, two servings weekly of fatty fish,
and less frequent intake of lean meat such
as chicken, can round out a healthy diet.
But, processed meats — such as bacon
and ham — are classified as a group one
carcinogen by the World Health Organi-
zation (joining the ranks of asbestos and
cigarette smoke). So, steer clear.
The moral of the story is that if you
didn’t listen to mom and dad back then,
listen to the doctor now: eat your veggies.

specific to my activity. Can you help clear my confusion?
You haven’t given me enough information specific to your foot structure and sport type to accurately
answer your question. I do, however think it’s important to spend some time addressing the purchase
of new shoes.
With normal everyday activity the average person walks over 100,00 kilometres in their lifetime,
about four times around the world. The foot must shock adsorb on impact. Adjust to contours
in the ground or changes in surface firmness and propel you in all directions. The shoe type and
fit cannot be over emphasized for everyday wear, but it certainly takes on greater importance
with athletics.
To answer the first part of your question, a cross trainer is not a shoe that will fulfill all the needs of a
serious athlete, whether he participates in one sport or multitude sports. For example, the motion of
the foot in a racquet sport with all the lateral or side to side movement, as well as the sudden starts
and stops is far different than the heel to toe shock absorbing requirements of the foot with jogging.
However, the cross-trainer may full the needs of the casual athlete or young person.
Before getting into specifics of shoe types, knowing when where and how to get a good fit is a good
place to begin, so here are my TOP 10 LIST FOR BUYING SHOES:
1. Buy shoes late in the day, feet swell as the day goes on as well as with exercise
2. Go to a store where the sales staff are knowledgeable, the shoe selection is wide, where the staff
participate in your specific sport and they have an understanding of biomechanics
3. Always have your feet measured while standing before your purchase of every new shoe. Never
assume your foot size is the same, feet lengthen and spay with aging. Not all size is created equal
and eight in one brand may be and eight and a half in another.
4. Shoes should be approximately a half inch or a thumb nail longer than your largest toe, and
remember that for about 30 percent of the population the longest toe is not the big toe
5. The widest part of your foot should fit the widest part of the shoe and should always be fitted for
the larger foot
6. The heel should fit snuggly to avoid excessive movement and blisters, yet the toes should have
room to wiggle
7. Always try the shoe on with the same type of sock you will be wearing for the sport that the shoes
were intended for.
8. Hewn relying on shoes, walk around the store for several minutes and test drive the shoes for their
specific activity. For example, try the jogging shoe on a treadmill or hiking boot on an inclined
surface to gauge for slippage
9. If you have orthotics always take them with you when trying on shoes
10. Shoes rarely stretch in size. If it doesn’t feel good in the store, it probably never will. It should
not need a break in period or an insole or filler, nor should it need to be stretched to feel good
and don’t let the salesperson substitute a wider shoe because he doesn’t have the correct size.
For example, a nine C cannot be replaced with an eight and a half D
Next issue we will address the general shoe type (not brand_ you may need. whether you require
a shoe for stability, motion control or cushioning will depend on whether you under pronate,
over pronate or supinate.
Remember warm, mechanically sound feet will allow for many hours of trouble free skiing.

HOW TO WRITE AN
EFFECTIVE CLASSIFIED AD
Start your ad with the item for sale, service you are offer-
ing, or job title of the person you seek to hire.
• Be descriptive. The more information you provide to the
reader, the better the responses will be to your ad.
• Always include the price of an item for sale.
• Avoid abbreviations. They make your ad harder to read
and less effective.
• Use larger type, white space, or decorative
characters, such as stars, to bring attention to your ad.
• Run your ad for an ample length of time. Remember,
as soon as you get results, you can cancel at any time dur-
ing regular business hours.

to keep up with customer’s demands,” says Ann.
And the demands keep coming in.

Known for its tried and true bathroom and
kitchen renovations, Crystal Bath, is undergoing
its own improvements. Crystal Bath will now be
expanding their services to the Durham Region,
including basement renovations and new builds.
Home renovations are typically a stressful and
tiring ordeal for a family. As a family business,
Crystal Bath understands this better than most,
so they go to great lengths to ensure that
renovations are done smoothly and stress free.
Crystal Bath is the epitome of a family-run
business.Itbeganin1995withhusbandandwife,

a licensed plumber. Once again, the business
expanded to include full plumbing services and
construction, but still kept that family feel.
Crystal Bath does not subcontract out to
others, a common tactic in home renovations,
but one that often makes renovations a stressful
crowd of people flowing in and out of the house.
“With us, you don’t have to shop around,”says
Ann. “We provide everything for you. We don’t
farm it out to strangers.”
Crystal Bath wants to make sure everything
is as smooth as possible during the renovations.
One customer said redoing the bathrooms and
kitchen in her house was actually fun and not at

ensure quality and efficient work.
Mario and Ann understand that undertaking
a renovation is personal, and so they take the
utmost care to ensure that the work is done on
time and on budget.
The process begins with a free consultation.
The owners and the customer chat about what
renovations are to be done, and what the final
design will look like. In the showroom, the
customer can choose from a wide variety of
products for the renovation from tiles to cabinets
to fixtures to countertops. Crystal Bath can
create a room for every taste, from traditional to
contemporary, and everything in between.
