Oshawa engineering work focuses on autonomous cars, infotainment Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- News that General Motors Can- ada will add 700 to 750 engineering jobs in Ontario in the coming years was broad- ly welcomed in Oshawa, though questions remain about the future of GM’s Oshawa plant. On Friday, June 10, GM officials were joined by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Kathleen Wynne for the announcement that the new jobs would be split between the Oshawa engineering centre, Kitchener-Waterloo, a Kapuskasing cold weather facility and a new facility in Markham. Following the announcement, GM offi- cials faced questions about the future of the company’s Oshawa manufacturing facility. GM Canada president Stephen Carlisle said it’s a working process with negotiations with the union coming up in August and Sep- tember and said the company is working with the Unifor as well as levels of govern- ment. Unifor president Jerry Dias was in atten- dance at the Friday announcement as were representatives from Unifor Local 222. “We’re all working in the same direction, we all want the same thing so it’s incumbent on us to put the best possible foot forward whether it’s the core economics or the pol- icy issues or working with Jerry’s team, so that clearly our focus,” said Mr. Carlisle. Mr. Dias said the announcement of engi- neering jobs was a sign GM is not exiting Canada and said the union would focus on the Oshawa footprint in bargaining. “There’s no question, we have to find a solution for Oshawa and that includes a long-term commitment,” he said referring to bringing new product to Oshawa’s manu- facturing plant. Mr. Dias said he understands people are feeling nervous about GM’s future in Oshawa. “We lost the Camaro, the truck plant closed several years ago so people have the right to be nervous but we are absolutely determined that we are going to find a solu- tion.” Following Friday’s announcement, GM vice-president of corporate and environ- mental affairs David Paterson explained some of the work that will come out of the Oshawa engineering centre. He said locally the focus will primar- ily be on software development related to autonomous vehicles and infotainment. He explained that infotainment relates to the centre console of the car and includes everything from interfaces with Apple and Android, OnStar and the 4G WiFi system now available. “You can run seven tablets streaming TV in your car at the same time, that’s not just for entertainment, kids in the back seat, what that allows you to do is bring in new safety features into the vehicle,” he explains. “When you think about it, autonomous vehicles have to be very, very connected to the world around them, it’s about mobile systems and the connectivity with mobile systems. You have sensors in the car that are connecting with other cars, with the road around them.” Mr. Paterson said his company believes the move to autonomous, connected and electric vehicles is just as a major an inflec- tion point as the switch from horses to auto- mobiles. He said the change will ultimately mean driving will be more accessible, it will mean less congestion and fewer cars on the road as vehicles become part of the sharing economy and lower greenhouse gases. “All of that is going to be connected to the work we do in Oshawa, this a very impor- tant and significant portfolio of work that is right in the sweet spot of where the automo- bile industry is going,” he said. New GM Canada engineering jobs welcomed Jason Liebregts / Metroland OSHAWA -- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Kathleen Wynne arrived in a Chevrolet Bolt at the General Motors Canada’s Canadian Engineering Centre as they announced the hiring of 750 engineers over the next number of years. Police seized guns and drugs and uncov- ered what they’re describing as a clandes- tine lab during the raids. Project Neebing began in November 2015 as an investi- gation into street-level drug activity and uncovered a sprawling trafficking network, police said. Durham partnered with Kingston police as the investigation proceeded, said Ser- geant Bill Calder. “It started here, but it definitely is a true partnership with Kingston,” he said. Early on June 9, police executed 20 search warrants at locations ranging from Bel- leville to Mississauga. One of those raids uncovered what police are describing as a clandestine drug lab in Mississauga, police said. Sgt. Calder on June 9 said police were working in conjunction with RCMP to dis- mantle the lab. As a result of the morning raids, police arrested 19 people and seized three handguns and vehicles identified as proceeds of crime. Police estimate the value of the seized drugs at $2.4 million. The seizure included more than 80 kgs of hashish, 1 kg of methamphetamine, 1.6 kgs of MDMA, and 1.9 kgs of Benzylpiperazine (BZP). Police also confiscated more than $300,000 in cash and three hand- guns. The five Dur- ham residents are: Storm Henry, 25, of Oshawa is charged with seven counts of trafficking cocaine, eight counts of proceeds of crime, two counts each of trafficking BZP and MDMA, possession for the purpose of trafficking marijuana and possession for the purpose of trafficking shatter, among other charges. Pasqualino Flammia, 23, of Uxbridge is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking BZP, two counts of posses- sion for the purpose of trafficking cannabis resin, three counts each of possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine and mar- ijuana, trafficking cannabis resin and pro- ceeds of crime. Jeff Skrepnek, 30, and Samantha Windsor, 25, both of Cannington, are each charged with possession for the purpose of traffick- ing cocaine and marijuana. Cody Stern, 24, of Enniskillen, is charged with possession for the purpose of traf- ficking marijuana and two counts of fail to comply undertaking. McEachnieFuneralHome 28OldKingstonRoad,PickeringVillage Those at Oshawa vigil reminded that love stronger than hate Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- There were tears, hugs of comfort, and a blanketing sense of sad- ness as more than 300 people gathered outside Oshawa City Hall on Monday to remember the victims of last weekend’s Orlando night club shooting. Organized by PFLAG Durham and Pride Durham, the June 13 event included mem- bers of the LGBTQ community and allies from across Durham. Many attended as fami- lies, with parents holding their children close as they listened to solemn speeches. The names of the Orlando victims and their ages were read aloud and they were also writ- ten on white paper lanterns. Adrian Betts, AIDS Committee Durham Region executive director, was the last speak- er of the evening and he delivered a powerful speech, bringing many in the crowd to tears. “Queer and trans people and their allies have come together to share our sadness, mourn those murdered and demonstrate love is stronger than hate,” he said. “Images from around the world have moved me pro- foundly, it has eased the ache in my body and is slowly healing my battered heart.” He said he will channel his rage into some- thing good and urged everyone else to do the same. “Don’t let anyone derail the conversa- tion we need to have about the years of sys- temic oppression and violence LGBT com- munities face just for being who we are, by making it about anything other than what it was, a hate crime targeting the queer and trans community.” He called on people in the audience to hug their families and show love. Jeff Doucette, a minister at the Dunbarton- Fairport United Church in Pickering, said he doesn’t have anymore answers than anyone else in the crowd. “Last night I sat at home and said what do you do, I just put on my (rainbow) brace- let,” he said, showing the bracelet he was still wearing. “You feel helpless, so I felt like I con- nected with the community. It doesn’t seem like a lot, but it’s a statement.” And in fact, that was the end result of the vigil in Oshawa, a statement from a commu- nity that had suffered a tremendous loss but vowed to work together to put an end to hate. It’s a sign that GM is here to stay and is prepared to invest heavily in Ontario and, in particular, Oshawa. Good-paying, stable jobs are in short supply here, so it doesn’t get much better than knowing that many of those stated engineering jobs — which will eventually bring GM’s stable of engineers to nearly 1,000 — will be staying at GM’s renamed Canadian Technical Centre in Oshawa. Some will go to GM’s new facility — a major software development centre — to be built in Markham. The engineers would be hired over the next few years as GM Canada increases its focus on electric and self-driving vehicles. And the Oshawa announcement on Fri- day came with much anticipation, not to mention with plenty of star power. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Pre- mier Kathleen Wynne were in attendance at the press conference, arriving at GM’s Oshawa engineering facility with the Prime Minister behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Bolt, the company’s newest electric offer- ing that’s at the vanguard of GM’s commit- ment to developing electric vehicles. GM Canada president and manag- ing director Steve Carlisle hailed Friday’s announcement as a ‘very special day for GM and the entire auto sector’. The hiring of a substantial number of new engineers is proof positive that GM sees the future lies in not only producing electric vehi- cles, but also autonomous vehicles and other technical enhancements within the cars we drive. Big players such as Google and Apple are apparently driving hard to be at the leading edge of this new technol- ogy; Friday’s announcement shows that GM is right in that battle in the technologi- cal arms race, too. Mark Reuss, General Motors executive president of global prod- uct development, purchasing and sup- ply chain, explained the company select- ed Ontario and especially Oshawa as the epicentre for research and development because of its capacity for innovation and proven talent and relationships with uni- versities, startups and innovative suppliers. Some of the elements of the new Chev- rolet Bolt, noted Mr. Reuss, such as its advanced Blue Tooth driver recognition system and 180-degree rearview mirror, were worked on in Oshawa. While the announcement of new engi- neering jobs was roundly welcomed, the elephant in the room was and is the lack of new product lines for Oshawa’s manufac- turing facility beyond 2017. Unifor presi- dent Jerry Dias says he’s prepared to work with GM to ‘find a solution for Oshawa that includes a long-term commitment’. For his part, Mr. Carlisle is prepared, like the union, to ‘put the best possible foot for- ward’ in contract negotiations expected to begin in either August or September. Let’s hope the end result of these nego- tiations will yield more economic good news for Oshawa and Durham. -- Metroland Media Group Ltd., Durham Region Division our opinion GM’s plan to hire engineers in Oshawa a positive sign Federal government playing catch-up on important issues facing Canadians column Has anyone else noticed that con- fusion precedes the entrance of controversial game chang- ers like Bill C-14, the physician-assist- ed dying bill? Maybe it’s the way of the “powers that be” because if we don’t know its status, then it can come in unchallenged.   I doubt there are many people in the general public who could tell you what’s happening with Bill C-14 right now. It had a June 6 deadline that passed. So are we in limbo; having to interpret matters from a Supreme Court or pro- vincial level; or are we pushing our way through until it’s the law of the land? I’m guessing it’s the latter. It’s what the Liberal government does, even with- out deadlines. They did it in changing Canada’s role with our allies against ISIS and with the quota for refugees, doing u-turns and bypassing proper process- es. But while Parliament tries to negotiate these waters with Bill C-14, the public is left to make sense of what we can and cannot do.   This process is about to reach sum- mertime when no one pays attention. When it comes to controversial topics, summer is prime time. Another game changer: the legaliza- tion of marijuana. The federal Liber- als campaigned on this and ever since, dispensaries have been popping up across the GTA. But it’s the provinces, cities and police forces that have to deal with the fallout of something that hasn’t even been put in place yet on a federal level. That brings us to another reality in this nation: having very little that is true governance-wise for all people across Canada. Provinces and even cities have their own interpretation, regulations and decision-making to do. That’s why UBER ride-sharing ser- vices can be suspended in Bramp- ton and Mississauga, while still oper- ating in Toronto. We’re a nation with many heads, so is it any wonder things are unclear? We didn’t even become a nation in a clear-cut way, so from our outset we haven’t had a collective def- inition and experience that made us one.     Bill C-14 and the marijuana matter are already at the forefront and governance has to play catchup. It’s a hard place for those on the frontlines like physicians and police to be -– having to enforce what hasn’t been clearly defined yet or has been, but peoples’ rights backed by courts, want to go where even angels fear to tread and that’s a dangerous place to be. -- Renae Jarrett lives in Durham, loves Canada and is a communicator of truth. Jason Liebregts / Metroland Lining up for Value Village grand opening in Pickering PICKERING -- The grand opening of Value Village at 645 Kingston Rd. was a big success on June 9 as the new store saw shoppers lined up before the store opening in Pickering. The store’s partnership with the Clothesline program and the Canadian Diabetes Association means Value Village pays to support people with diabetes when people donate their goods at the store’s on-site Community Donation Centre or have their donation picked up at home by the Clothesline program. Pickering auto shop fined $3,000 for failing to pay employees DURHAM -- The operators of a Pickering auto shop have been fined $3,000 for fail- ing to pay wages owed to employees. Charges were laid under the Employ- ment Standards Act after Pickering Per- formance Tire & Automotive Inc. ignored three orders from the Ministry of Labour to pay the outstanding wages, the ministry said. An employment standards officer found three workers were owed a total of $2,2724 and issued the orders to pay, the ministry said. The company pleaded guilty and the out- standing wages were paid prior to a sen- tencing hearing June 1 in Whitby. Justice of the Peace Marhta De Gannes fined the company $3,000, as well as a 25 per cent victim surcharge. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 1 5 , 2 0 1 6 8 P “We’d like to get 75,000 to sign the peti- tion,” said Jack Gibbons, chairman of the Ontario Clean Air Alliance. The OCAA recently held a public infor- mation meeting on the topic at the Ajax Public Library. He said Pickering’s is the fourth oldest nuclear station in North America, the sev- enth oldest in the world, and is located closer to a major urban centre than any other in North America. Ontario Power Generation is seeking a licence extension to 2024. “Its existing licence expires in 2018,” said Mr. Gibbons. “We were shocked to hear that. It doesn’t make sense. It need- lessly risks public safety and raises our electricity bills.” OPG spokesman Neal Kelly said extend- ing Pickering’s operation to 2024 would save Ontario electricity customers up to $600 million, avoid eight million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions and protect 4,500 jobs across Durham Region. “What we are proposing to do is safely operate six of the units until 2022 and four until 2024,” said Mr. Kelly. “Our studies to date show that you can safely operate the station until 2024.” Mr. Gibbons said closing the plant in 2018 will reduce Ontario electricity costs by $900 million per year and create 16,000 new jobs dismantling and decommission- ing the reactors. He said he’s learned OPG is going to seek permission to extend the licence fur- ther, to 2028. When asked if this is true, Mr. Kelly reiterated plans to extend to 2024. OCAA released a video of retired OPG nuclear scientist Frank Greening explain- ing the risks of extending Pickering oper- ations. In the video, he said there have been “near misses” in the past and said there are other ways to replace the power that comes out of Pickering, such as buy- ing hydroelectric power from Quebec. “All I can tell you is it is a safe plant,” said Mr. Kelly in response to the video. “Anybody that says otherwise is wrong. We operate that plant to a very, very high standard. We have to demonstrate on a daily basis to the satisfaction of the regu- lator, the (Canadian Nuclear Safety Com- mission), that the plant is able to continue operating in a safe and effective manner.” GROUP from page 1 Group petitions Province to shutter Pickering nuclear facility Durham wait times for intensive therapy almost double than the average Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Pickering council has passed a motion urging the provincial gov- ernment to reinstate adequate funding for children with autism in need of intensive therapy, regardless of their age. The Liberal government announced ear- lier this year a new Ontario Autism Pro- gram in which $333 million in funding will move toward a focus on intensive behav- ioural intervention services for children ages two to four; and transition children five years and older currently receiving IBI to applied behaviour analysis services. While the new program will reduce wait times for many children, those five years old and up will no longer be eligible for IBI. “This is shameful and disgusting and a slap in the face of the parents of these kids,” said Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean, who introduced the motion. “Why? Because they’re over five years. We’ve heard that autism doesn’t stop at five years.” Ward 1 City Councillor Maurice Brenner, who seconded the motion, agreed with Coun. McLean. “It is against the laws of the Ontario Humans Right Code to discriminate based on age and the Government of Ontario cannot and should not be exempt from that,” he said. John Higo, president of the Durham Region chapter of Autism Ontario, spoke in support of the motion. “Durham wait times have typically been longer than average, almost double,” said Mr. Higo. The motion states many are being doubly penalized by not having had access to IBI in the first place, by being on the wait list, and now learning they will not receive this service. IBI therapy costs about $50,000 per year, per child. For the children who are now being taken off the wait list or phased out of the program, the service will be replaced by one-time funding of $8,000 per child. The motion states this is equivalent to roughly two months of IBI therapy. Mr. Higo said $8,000 is not enough to bridge the gap in service created by the plan. “It is inadequate and devastating,” he said. The motion also notes the lack of details in the government’s announcement for neither school nor adult programs. Pickering council urges Province to rethink autism strategy Bill McLean This is shameful and disgusting and a slap in the face of the parents of these kids. -- Bill McLean, Ward 2 Regional Councillor “ du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 1 5 , 2 0 1 6 9 P Farmers’Market Find us this summer Right next door to City Hall South Esplanade parking lot Tuesdays 8am – 3pm June 14 – October 4 Bringing local foodtoyourtable… pickering.ca/farmersmarket Direct Access 905.420.4660 General Enquiries 905.683.2760 Service Disruption 1.877.420.4666 Customer Care Centre 905.683.7575 (24 hour line) customercare@pickering.ca pickering.ca @cityofpickering@cityofpickering CityofPickering,TaxationSection: 905.420.4614 propertytaxes@pickering.ca PleasecontactusifyouhavenotreceivedyourTaxNotice.Failure toreceiveaTaxNoticedoesnotreduceyourresponsibilityforthe paymentoftaxesandpenalty. After three successful years, Picker- ing’s Celebrating Sustainable Neigh- bourhoods program is back. It allows people to link together to work on proj- ects that make Pickering a better place environmentally, socially, or economi- cally. “The program is a unique opportunity. Groups are encouraged to do activities that are meaningful to them or to join and be recognized for the great initia- tives they are already doing,” said Chan- tal Whitaker, Pickering’s sustainability co-ordinator. Past group initiatives include: litter cleanups, helping charities, communi- ty gardening, volunteering, organizing group fitness, beautifying the city, and environmental awareness. Participating groups can be made up of immediate neighbours, schools, plac- es of worship, friends, businesses, and existing community groups. Groups have until the end of November to com- plete their activities. At the end of the program, all partic- ipants will be invited to a celebration where a winner will be chosen by fellow groups through a peer vote. The winning neighbourhood group gets the opportu- nity to work with the City on a commu- nity enhancement project valued up to $10,000. “I am proud this program exists to encourage our residents to come together to enhance our City and help us reach our long-term development and sustainability goals,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. Local blood donors to be honoured at Durham ceremony Thursday PICKERING -- Pickering council is ask- ing Transport Canada to take measures to improve rail safety in Pickering. Council passed a motion recently, requesting Transport Canada to direct CN to install chain link fencing along the entire CN corridor abutting Bayly Street between Whites Road East and Liverpool Road. The Lakeshore CN rail line abuts a well- populated area of Pickering, and the motion states sections between Whites and Liverpool roads lack any form of fencing that would prevent access onto the rail lines. “There’s not a separation. There’s not a barrier. There’s not a buffer,” said Ward 1 City Councillor Maurice Brenner. who introduced the motion. The motion says sections of rail west of Liverpool Road along Bayly Street are less than three metres from both pedes- trian sidewalks and bus stops. “It only takes a split second for an acci- dent,” said Coun. Brenner. “That’s why it’s called an accident.” Lack of fencing around CN rail line in Pickering a safety concern: council du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Ju n e 1 5 , 2 0 1 6 14 AP Marie G. Whitby’s Jennaya Lumley makes jams, pickles and more under Drunken Smoker brand Stefanie Swinson sswinson@durhamregion.com WHITBY - I first fell in love with the Drunken Smoker in April when I met entrepreneur Jennaya Lumley at Food Truck Frenzy in Whitby. The Whitby woman was there with a wide assortment of her jams, pickles and beef jerky for foodies like me to try. I tried the red wine sangria jam, on a recommendation from an event goer, then knew I needed to try more. Ms. Lumley started Drunken Smoker about two years ago. The name refers to how she makes the deliciously sweet and savoury good- ies; the products are infused with booze and/or smoked. “My Baba was making jerky every Christmas and when she no longer could ... I was enlisted to take over,” she said. “Drunken Smoker is her legacy with a twist, a tradition modernized.” I was reunited with Whitby’s best kept culinary secret at the Vault on Brock Street South; one of the restaurants Ms. Lumley has the support of. The owners allow her to use their kitchen to cook up her creations. She cooks out of Zingers at Iroquois Park as well. The table was topped with delectable dishes using her products in the recipes. “I wanted to showcase how you can use my products differently,” she said. My favourite was anything topped with the smoked onion and beer jam. Ms. Lumley used the jam to make a glaze on chicken wings and on a puff pastry with brie, caramelized onions and then added the jam. In order to explain just how delicious it is, I must tell you that I am not a beer drinker nor am I an onion lover. There’s a reason the smoked onion and beer jam is one of Drunken Smokers’ best sellers. It is sweet, yet smoky and really should be a staple on anyone’s cheese board. I also tried it with goat cheese on a cracker and it was amazing. The Vault’s coconut shrimp was given a twist with the addition of Ms. Lum- ley’s latest product (only a week old), a smoked pineapple and rum jam. This was my photographer Jason Lie- bregts’s favourite item he taste tested, calling it “versatile.” The sweetness of the pineapple offsets the taste of the rum making it a perfect pairing for more than just seafood. “It tastes great on toast for breakfast,” explained Ms. Lumley. “It would also taste good on a barbecue chicken sand- wich.” Other products available which I can say are worth a try include a rye and gin- ger jam, apricot brandy jam, smoked hot pepper jelly, smoked olives, pickled green beans, and pork rinds, yes, pork rinds. “They’re full of protein, no carbs. I use olive oil and smoke them first,” explained Ms. Lumley. “They’re perfect for Paleo dieters.” The best seller, though, is Baba’s beef jerky. A booze-free product that is smoked to perfection, just like how Ms. Lumley’s Baba made it. “When it has tradition it’s not just feed- ing your belly, it’s feeding your soul,” she said. Drunken Smokers products range from $5-$12 and can be purchased online at http://www.drunkensmoker. com/ Ms. Lumley will also have a booth set up at Whitby Ribfest from July 8-10. However, somewhere in the mists of histo- ry, Syrians played with the name and ingredients to make a won- derful light and crispy meat-rice pastry that they call ouzi. This is my own version of this wonderful dish that for me, is a Father’s Day treat. I have a weak- ness for lamb and when made right with a good combination of spices, nothing can compare to this meat. Lamb digests much more quickly than beef for exam- ple which of course is a major plus when enjoying this pastry. Thus don’t feel guilty if you want to eat more than one or two pies. In any case, when father bites into it, his joy will be boundless, as ouzi ‘oozes’ in taste. Ouzi - Square Meat Pies Makes 12 pies 4 tablespoons olive oil 1 cup ground lamb 1 medium onion, finely chopped 4 cloves garlic, crushed 4 tablespoons finely chopped fresh coriander 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1/2 teaspoon cumin 1/2 teaspoon allspice 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon cayenne 1 cup frozen or fresh peas 2 cups cooked rice 1/2 cup pine nuts or slivered almonds, toasted 24 sheets filo dough, placed horizontally then cut in half and covered with plastic wrap (to stop the dough from drying) 1 cup butter, melted Method Heat olive oil in a large frying pan then sauté meat and onion over medium heat for 10 minutes. Add garlic, coriander, salt, pepper, cumin, allspice, cinnamon and cayenne then sauté for a further 5 minutes. Transfer to a mixing bowl then stir in peas, rice and nuts to make a filling. Divide into 12 portions and set aside. Take one of the half sheets of filo dough and brush lightly with but- ter, then take another half sheet and brush with butter and contin- ue for four sheets. Place one por- tion of filling in the middle then fold the filo dough over the filling from all sides to make a square pie. Continue until the 12 pies are done. Place in a greased baking pan, seam side down, then brush with remaining butter. Bake in a 350° F preheated oven for 25 min- utes or until the pies turn golden. Serve warm.
