During a telephone Town Hall meeting on Sept. 24, several callers questioned what a possible merger between Rouge Valley Health System and the Scarbor- ough Hospital would mean for the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital, and suggested a merger between the Ajax site and Lakeridge Health Oshawa would make more sense. “One thing I’m concerned about is this merger bringing more 905ers into the city because they might have to go to Scarborough locations for services,” said one caller. “I’d rather see the Centenary and Scarborough hospitals linked and then Lakeridge Health and Ajax-Pickering linked.” Rik Ganderton, president and CEO of RVHS, said the decision to merge with Scarborough was supported by the hos- pital’s staff and physicians. See PICKERING page 10 AJAX -- Rik Ganderton, President and CEO of the Rouge Valley Health System, was part of a telephone Town Hall meeting Sept. 24. Complete office facility, with Boardroom & Kitchen Suspect in Pickering murders wasn’t ID’d by witness, jurors told Double killing linked to stolen cocaine JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- A former drug smuggler who cooperated with an investigation into a dou- ble murder in Pickering did not identify a suspect until he was prompted by police, a defence lawyer contends. Bikramjit Dhindsa provided police with details of a drug deal gone wrong and the players involved, but never implicated Vijay Singh until he was shown a picture of the sus- pect months after the killings, jurors heard. Mr. Dhindsa, court heard, was an associ- ate of Harjinder Singh Sandhu in a criminal enterprise that smuggled cocaine into Can- ada aboard trucks arriving from the United States. The Crown contends Mr. Sandhu ran afoul of drug smugglers, including Mr. Singh, after a 35 kilogram shipment of cocaine was stolen. The bodies of Mr. Sandhu, 29, of Bramp- ton, and 26-year-old Puneet Singh Chhi- na, of Nepean, were found in the trunk of a car abandoned on Rosebank Road in rural Pickering on May 5, 2009. Both men had been bound with duct tape and shot in the head. The Crown alleges the men were lured to Mr. Singh’s Scarborough home with an offer of cheap heroin. Mr. Dhindsa, who began testifying Mon- day, was interviewed by police on a number of occasions, including in July of 2009, court heard. And while he told police about meet- ings held to discuss the drug rip-off, he didn’t mention Mr. Singh being in attendance, court heard. He also denied knowing a man named Vijay Singh or seeing a man with an eyepatch -- Mr. Singh wears a distinctive black patch over his left eye -- when he met with his drug associates, court heard. It was only after police showed Mr. Dhind- sa a picture of Mr. Singh that he identified him as “Vee”, a B.C.-based associate of his drug boss, court heard. At trial Mr. Dhindsa testified “Vee” attend- ed a Toronto-area meeting to discuss the drug rip-off in January or February of 2009. Defence lawyer Todd White seized upon Mr. Dhindsa’s failure to mention Mr. Singh when he was first questioned by cops investi- gating the murders. “You didn’t mention anything whatsoever -- not even a hint -- about a guy named Vee with an eyepatch,” Mr. White suggested. “Right,” replied Mr. Dhindsa, who agreed an eyepatch would be a memorable feature. Mr. Dhindsa said that at the time of the interview with police he was preoccupied with the condition of his wife, who lay grave- ly ill in hospital. He added he barely knew Mr. Singh. “I didn’t know his real name,” he said. “I only knew him as Vee.” The trial, before Superior Court Justice Bryan Shaughnessy and a jury, continues next week in Oshawa. Thank you to the person who wrote and sent the letter about the autistic boy: I, along with the rest of the world, have been following the rallies and news since your letter went viral. I attended the motorcycle rally in Newcastle on behalf of autism awareness and I was inspired to thank you. What an exhilarating experi- ence witnessing the overwhelming support of this family. Hundreds of bikers, media, neigh- bours and friends loudly responded in protest of your behaviour. I am sure it was not your intent but as a result of your vile and cruel words, you have stirred millions of people into taking action of support for the victim. Your actions have shed more light on the awareness of autism than any major fundraising campaign could ever accomplish. For that, I am grateful. Your lack of compassion ignited a fire with- in us that only benefited the people who live in our community with a disability. The com- munity will not passively stand by for your verbal and emotional bullying. You can never take back those words. You thought you were causing harm and hurt but in the end, there was only light and healing. They say that every cloud has a silver lining. Well, we hit gold with this one. B.J. Kennedy I can always change my vote To the editor: When I became a Bell phone custom- er and a Conservative voter, I paid $20 a month for my phone service, which includ- ed personal service from operators and a telephone set. Now with all the competing land phone providers and cellphones and Internet phones vying for my business, I pay over $50 per month for my basic home phone service from Bell with no extras. It just boggles my mind that the prime minister and federal government are still telling me about how more competition is going to improve things for the public. I have been a Bell customer and Conser- vative supporter for 50 years and I can’t do without my telephone but I can surely change my vote. Officials may be thinking they have the public support for their wrong-minded policy on phone service but I haven’t heard anyone outside of government who agrees. Richard Nicholson, Whitby P Merging Ajax/Pickering and Scarborough hospitals the way to go But not if that means reduced services here We fully support a merger of the Ajax/ Pickering and Scarborough hospitals if it saves money but does not mean fewer ser- vices at the local facility. The Rouge Valley Health System and The Scarborough Hospital are in the midst of a $1.1-million study that could result in the merger of the RVHS's Ajax campus with the Birchmount and General sites of The Scarborough Hospital. The Central East Local Health Integra- tion Network has called for an “integra- tion plan” by mid-November for what it describes as “the Scarborough cluster” of hospitals, which RVHS CEO Rik Gander- ton and TSH CEO Robert Biron said must include the Ajax-Pickering site. We agree. Rouge Valley Ajax is already tied to Scarborough's Centenary Hospital and people here have natural, geographic ties to Scarborough. Scarborough people come here for services and we go to their hospitals. Hospital groupings in recent years have some- times been arbitrarily imposed. In Uxbridge, the Uxbridge Cottage Hospi- tal was amalgamated with Community Memorial Hos- pital Port Perry, then affiliat- ed with Lakeridge Health in Oshawa, before becoming a campus of Markham-Stouffville Hospital. Closer to home, a citizens' group once pushed for the Ajax hospital to leave the RVHS and join Lakeridge Health, which has hospitals in Bowmanville, Oshawa, Port Perry and Whitby. But grouping hospitals on the basis of political boundaries hasn't worked. The people of Uxbridge and its hospital were better suited to a link with Markham-Stouffville, as is Ajax with Centenary and the other Scarborough hospi- tals. However mergers always raise the question of the level of services. Will they remain the same? And as Ajax Mayor Steve Parish noted at Monday's council meeting, where Mr. Gander- ton spoke, that makes people jumpy. But Mr. Ganderton said the proposed merger would not mean services moving from Ajax to Scarborough. He made that crystal clear around three months ago, not- ing the merger would only affect the Ajax/ Pickering campus’s leadership, adminis- tration and “back office” departments. If the merger saves money on the admin- istration side and does not mean fewer services in Ajax, it would be hard to find a reason not to support it. The Province has been clear in recent years that it wants to spend less on health care and the merger, in a small way, is in line with that. Ultimately, The Central East LHIN will make the decision, not the hospitals, with the minister of health acting on the its rec- ommendation. The RVHS and TSH invite Ajax and Pickering residents to take part in an online survey about the possible merger at www.leadingforpatients.ca/community- survey. -- Ajax Pickering News Advertiser du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 2 6 , 2 0 1 3 7 APPine Ridge Memorial Gardens Cemetery Programs, Cremation Lot For 2 People *This is A Limited Time Offer* Everyone is Approved Per MonthOver 48 Months Everyone is Approved Per MonthOver 48 Months 541 Ta unton Rd. at Church St., Ajax 905-427-5416 • www.pineridgecemetery.ca Starting at $27$25 Starting at $55$53 Tr aditional Burial Lot For 2 Caskets 375 Kingston Road, Pickering (Rougemount Square) • 905-509-3223 Let’s Ta lk Tu rkey! Patrons of Ajax barber shop may have been infected Clients of Gold Scissors urged to call health department AJAX -- Patrons who had a shave at an Ajax barber shop may have been exposed to inadequately cleaned and disinfected shaving equipment. The Durham Region health depart- ment is urging clients of the Gold Scis- sors Barber Shop and Hair Styling to call the department as part of an investigation into a potential exposure. Clients who had a shave between July 24, 2012 and Sept. 19, 2013 are urged to call the health department at 905-666- 6214 or 1-800-841-2729 as soon as possi- ble. Callers will be provided information on the recommended follow-up tests to rule out any potential blood-borne infec- tion. “At this time, we have no evidence of transmission of infectious disease,” said Dr. Robert Kyle, Durham Region medi- cal officer of health. “However, there is a low risk because of the reuse of single-use razor blades and shaving equipment that were inadequately cleaned and disinfect- ed at this establishment.” The number of clients potentially affect- ed is unknown at this time. “As the operator is unable to provide the health department with a list of clients, it’s very important for anyone who received shaving services with a razor blade at this particular establishment in Ajax to call us for further follow-up,” Dr. Kyle added. Director of education Mar- tyn Beckett said at the Sept. 16 board meet- ing that positive mental health is key to success, for both staff and students, and the board’s strategic plan on the topic outlines what the board will do to help ensure it. The document, Linking Healthy Minds for a Positive Future, lays out a five-year plan aimed at supporting the positive men- tal health of the board’s students. It focuses on building resiliency; break- ing down the stigma; building skills and knowledge; engaging parents or guardians and families; and working collaboratively with community partners. The document can be found at ddsb.ca. Durham school board sees enrolment decline DURHAM -- Official enrollment projections for the Durham District School Board shows an overall decrease of 365 students this year. Based on October projections, the board says it will see a total of 46,725 elementary students and 22,672 secondary students. The number of elementary students has jumped by 90 from last October, but the number of high school students has decreased by 455. The board chalks up the increase on the elementary level to full-day kindergarten, and it’s expected to increase next year as well. The board says the ministry’s implementa- tion of a 34-credit maximum for graduating students has resulted in the decline in high school students. In order to complete the project, it is necessary to build a connection chamber on the north-east corner of the intersection of Finch Avenue and Va lley Farm Road. The connection chamber is partially located under Finch Avenue and as a result, it will be necessary to close the westbound lane of Finch Avenue, from Va lley Farm Road to Brock Road. Only local traffic will be permitted access onto Finch Avenue from Brock Road to 150 metres east of Va lley Farm Road. A detour route (shown on the map) has been developed in consultation with the Region of Durham and the City of Pickering. Through traffic attempting to travel west from Brock Road will be directed to Kingston Road and across to Liverpool Road. Detour signage will be in place prior to the closure to assist motorists in navigating around the closure. For safety reasons, southbound traffic on Va lley Farm Road will not be permitted to turn east onto Finch Avenue for the duration of the closure. The lane closure and detour will begin October 1, 2013 and will be in place for 14 months. This stage of the project is required to make the connection from the new sewer to the existing trunk sewer. Once the connection is made, all working areas in the vicinity of Finch Avenue and Va lley Farm Road will be removed and the area completely restored. All work related to the Southeast Collector Tr unk Sewer project in the vicinity of the Finch Avenue and Va lley Farm Road intersection is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2014. There is no intention to move services out of the Ajax-Pickering campus to Scarborough or vice versa. “We have made three commitments as part of this process,” he continued. “One is that the emergency departments at all four hospital sites will stay open, in addition no hospital sites will close and patient-care services currently delivered at Rouge Valley Ajax-Picker- ing will continue to be delivered there.” Officials emphasized throughout the meeting that staff analyzing the potential merger is focus- ing on sustaining all current services. “This merger is not about making choices on the services we provide for the community,” said Robert Biron, president and CEO of the Scar- borough Hospital. “We wish to maintain or even improve access to services for the community.” Few details on the potential merger were avail- able, such as whether jobs would be lost or how services will be impacted, with 14 working groups currently in the process of examining the risks and benefits of the scenario. “I see firsthand the challenges of making our health-care system work for patients,” said Dr. Naresh Mohan, chief of staff for RVHS. “There are opportunities by which we can improve the service we provide but the current system doesn’t allow for that, that’s why change is necessary,” he continued, pointing to RVHS’s regional cardiac program and Scarborough’s nephrology program as two examples of how the merger can benefit patients. “These are two excellent examples of how ser- vices can be integrated to provide local access to world-class care.” His counterpart in Scarborough, Dr. Tom Chan, also pointed to laboratory services, mental health and cancer care as areas that could benefit from integration. Officials were also quick to remind residents that a potential merger is not definite, but is just in the discussion stages. “It’s important to note there are also risks to doing nothing,” Mr. Biron said of the potential merger. “We know regardless of the outcome, to merge or not to merge, that we will still face the chal- lenges of the need to better serve our growing and aging community, the need to do more with less money and the need to sustain our system for future generations. So the question we’re really trying to answer is, are we stronger together?” For more information on the merger and upcoming public meetings, visit www.leading- forpatients.ca. PICKERING from page 1 Pickering residents weigh in on possible hospital merger Fundraiser to benefit scholarship in memory of slain Ajax student Family, friends halfway to goal for scholarship in memory of Lindsay Wilson AJAX -- Friends and family of slain Ajax student Lindsay Wil- son are hoping the public will help support the creation of a scholarship in her memory at an upcoming fundraising bar- becue. Ms. Wilson, 26, died in April after being shot outside her home in Bracebridge, where she was in her fourth year of studies at Nipissing University. Her ex-boyfriend, Jeremy Raymond Pearson, was also found dead of gunshots at the scene. In August, Nipissing University announced the creation of a memorial scholarship to honour Ms. Wilson by assisting other students with a similar passion for advocacy for people with special needs. “I’m very proud of my daughter and proud of the impact she had on people and the example she demonstrated,” said Ali- son Irons, Ms. Wilson’s mother. “It helps us to see something positive come out of this, and we’re so very happy with the focus of this scholarship. It’s very consistent with her passion and values.” Friends and family are currently working to raise the $10,000 endowment needed to get the scholarship off the ground, and are already nearly halfway there at more than $4,500 raised so far. On Saturday, Sept. 28, a fundraising barbecue will be held at the Tudor Rose, at 700 Harwood Ave. S. in Ajax. Beginning at 3 p.m., guests can enjoy barbecue and drink specials and later partake in some karaoke, with all proceeds going to the schol- arship fund. Donations for the scholarship can also be made online at www.nipissingu.ca/giving, and should specify that they are for a “bursary, award or scholarship in memory of Lindsay Wilson.” du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 2 6 , 2 0 1 3 11 AP Dine-in only. The Doors Open Pickering committee is inviting area artists to help celebrate the Doors Open theme of cultural expression by putting their works on display at featured sites throughout the event. “Residents can expect to experience the broad culture of Pickering, both in terms of its historical fabric through the buildings them- selves, and its strong arts scene, whatever the art medium,” said Cristina Celebre, senior planner for the City of Pickering. “Heritage sites and landscapes are natural subjects for visual artists.” Area artists and art groups are invited to display their work at designated buildings and outdoor spaces that will be included in this year’s Doors Open Pickering event, held Oct. 5 and 6. This year’s event features several new stops, including the Erskine Church and Cemetery, Ecole elementaire et secondaire Pickering, Brougham Union Masonic Hall, Claremont United Church, Fire Station 4 - Claremont, Whitevale Cemetery and Pickering Stan- dard Church as well as new walking tours of Whitevale and Frenchman’s Bay and three bus tours, Whitevale, Brougham and Clare- mont and By the Bay. For more information, call 905-665-7430. jason liebregts / metroland It’s fall, so it’s mice season They’re small, plump, furry and cute, and when they peer up at you with those big, luminous dark eyes, it’s hard to keep from melting inside. That’s what I find when I’m up close and personal with a deer mouse -- an occurrence that hap- pens more often in September than any other time of year. When days start to get colder and shorter, a lot of juveniles born over the summer decide they want to find some- where warm and cozy to spend the win- ter. My house, an old cottage perched on cement blocks, with no basement, must have a few choice secret entrances from the crawl space below, because every fall my husband and I get a few furry visitors -- and carefully export them. That’s when I get a really good look at the year’s crop of mice: when I’m releas- ing them from the have-a-heart live trap we catch them in, providing a nice meal of sunflower seeds as bait, to eat while they await their “free ride” up the road to a nice weedy field filled with seeds, fungi, fruit and insects. All in all, mice that come to our place have a relatively good time of it. The three or four we’ve transported so far this fall are being subjected to extra close scrutiny. I gave Dennis The Natu- ral History of Canadian Mammals for his birthday last month, a wonderful new compendium of fascinating facts about the fellow mammals we share this mag- nificent country with, published just last year by the Canadian Museum of Nature and U of T Press. With great glee, after thumbing through chapters on whales, bears, cougars and canines -- after Den- nis had a chance to look at it, of course -- I went straight to the section on deer mice versus white-footed mice, curious to finally get the scoop on how to tell these two little rodents apart. Only to learn that even the experts find it nearly impossible to do so. Not only do they look alike, with big ears, long tails and pale throats, but they’re equal- ly common here in southern Ontario. And almost every detail of their habits, food preferences and breeding practic- es are similar, including caching seeds, being active at night, building globular nests lined with soft materials, and hap- pily sharing space with humans when available. White-footed mice are bet- ter climbers, but they both swim well, and run silently along damp, mossy logs instead of in dry, rustling leaves, where predators will hear them. I was surprised to learn females of both species are homebodies, not travelling far from where they’re born. They defend a small breeding territory in summer, but often share a nest in winter, hud- dling together for warmth. I hoped the ones we released would find just such a cozy retreat ... and escape the sharp eyes of the local owls. Nature queries: mcarney@interlinks. net or 905-725-2116. Durham outdoors writer Margaret Car- ney has more than 3,000 species on her life list of birds, seen in far-flung corners of the planet. margaret Carney The Great Outdoors See a video of the Jefferson on Facebook facebook.com/NewsDurhamKristensKritters From outdoor cat to indoor cat I’ve written in the past that keeping cats indoors is important for their health. It keeps them from getting hit by cars, fight- ing, killing birds and picking up diseases, among other possible dangers. However, I often hear that turning an outdoor cat into an indoor cat is no easy task. Since mine have remained indoors since they were kittens, I haven’t had that problem, but I’ve seen how stressful the transition can be. Here are some tips to keeping cats safely -- and happily -- indoors. When making the transition, give them a lot of attention. One of the reasons cats enjoy being outside is the number of things to do, according to the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Help your cat adjust to an indoor lifestyle by giving him plenty of quality time and affection, and playing with him. And make the indoors a fun place to be. Help your cat learn to associate being indoors with a variety of activities he takes pleasure in, suggests the OSPCA. Feed your cat indoors, and if he likes being brushed, brush him indoors. Make sure his litter box is kept clean so your cat has fewer problems adjusting to it. Also, help your cat enjoy the entertain- ment of the outside world from the safety of inside. Make sure he has perching areas on window ledges and set up a variety of comfortable resting areas so he can bask in the sun. Open screen windows when the weather is nice to allow your cat to take in the smells and breezes without having to let him out. The birds will be grateful too. If you must take your cat outside, super- vise him at all times. It is possible to cre- ate a fully enclosed outdoor play area, or even harness train your cat so the two of you can enjoy time outdoors together. I can attest to the harness tip. My par- ents’ cat, Ory, is a big fan of the outdoors and so they take him out on the harness. They don’t take him on walks, which is a possibility, but he does get semi-freedom when he’s tethered on a long leash. This way he can go about his business in the back yard safely, and he isn’t driving my parents crazy with his demands for free- dom. But make sure to keep an eye on your harness-wearing cat. Ory has managed to get out of his harness on a few occasions, but luckily we caught sight of it before he left the yard. Teaching your outdoor cat to become an indoor cat requires patience. Keep in mind that some cats adjust more quickly than others, warns the OSPCA. And stay strong. Remember that despite any initial protests from your cat, your perseverance will ultimately result in a longer, happier life for your pet. Pancreatitis occurs when there is inflammation of the pan- creas. The cause of this is not always known, however fattymeals, steroids, and infections may be contributing factors.During an episode of pancreatitis, the digestive enzymes are activated prematurely resulting in “digestion”of the pancreas itself. Clinical signs include vomiting, abdominalpain, decreased appetite, lethargy, fever and in severe cases, shock. Diagnosis is based on blood work and/or imaging of the abdomen (x-rays or ultrasound). Leeanna McLean Videographer Videos @ durhamregion.com Leave the leaves on the lawn for healthier grass The trees are changing colour. The leaves are about to fall. You know what that means, the raking is about to begin. If you dread the annual fall leaf rak- ing, I have good news for you. Research has shown that mowing leaves into your lawn can improve its vigour. So, as you’re taking care of your leaves, remember there are many ways to reuse them in your yard. Use your mulching mower to shred the leaves onto your lawn. The small leaf parts will decompose by spring. In the meantime, they will protect your grass roots from harsh temperatures and provide valuable nutri- ents to your lawn. If you don’t have a mulching mower, you can simply remove the bagger attach- ment on your mower and insert the chute cover, if needed. You want the leaf parts to be small, so you may need to go over the lawn more than once. Your lawn should not look as though it is buried in leaves. Instead, the leaves should be “sprinkled” over the grass. You may also want to rake your leaves and layer them onto your garden or flow- er beds or pick up leaves with your bagging mower and put these shredded leaves onto gardens and flow- er beds. Whether the leaves are whole or shredded, the layer should be no more than two to three inches thick. These leaves will serve as mulch, protecting helpful insects, bacteria and fungi from the colder winter weather and keeping moisture in the soil for spring plants. In the spring, mix the decompos- ing leaves with compost. Add fall leaves to your compost bin or pile. Mix over-ripe fruits and vegetables and grass clippings into the compost pile or bin to help the leaves decompose more quickly. If you have more leaves than you can mulch or compost, check your collec- tion calendar for yard waste collection in your area. Remember, leaves should be placed in kraft paper bags or clearly labeled rigid open-top reusable contain- ers. Containers cannot exceed 20 kg (44 pounds). Yard waste set out in plastic bags will not be collected. Council approved the move on Monday after hearing from Lisa Warth, the Town’s community development co-ordinator. She said the 2011 census found about 20 per cent of Ajax residents are 65 or older. Celebrations will be held with a pair of seniors’ organizations on Oct. 1 and 2, she noted. Senior Reg Lawrence said, “Seniors have leadership abilities and skills. The possibilities are end- less. Pay tribute to older residents and we can return the favour.” Council also declared Oct. 7 to 11 as Customer Service Week. Louise Soulliere, the Town’s customer service co-ordinator, said the week is a nationally recog- nized. The focus this year is “continu- ous feedback. The United Way of Durham Region kicked off its fall fundraising campaign Tuesday, Sept. 24 and it will run until early December. The United Way supports more than 45 charities in the eight Durham municipali- ties, and each dollar raised remains in the community. Campaign director Robert Howard said the goal this year is to raise $250,000 in new money. Last year, the campaign raised almost $3.9 million. “One thing we’re pushing this year is ‘Des- ignate Durham,’” he said. Anyone who lives in Durham but works elsewhere can have their contribution for- warded to the Durham agency rather than the community they work in. While nothing will guarantee you will be able to completely prevent illness related to cold and flu viruses, take a look below for some tips to help fend off illness before it hits. Stay rested – Factors that may increase the risk of catching a cold or flu are fatigue and emotional stress. Be sure to take the time to rest if you feel something coming on, and don’t go into work if you wake up with a fever, aches and pains, or are coughing, sniffling, and sneezing. Wash your hands –Yes, we have all heard this over and over, but hand washing is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of illness. The cold and flu viruses can spread through indirect contact such as touching objects like door handles, and can live for 2 to 8 hours on surfaces. Everyone should wash their hands frequently with soap and water, or if unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Avoid sharing food and beverages – Cold and flu viruses can spread through direct contact, such as sharing drinks or food. Avoid sharing straws, bottles, snacks and utensils with others, especially if you are sick. Cover your sneezes and coughs - When you sneeze or cough, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue if possible. Cough or sneeze into your sleeve if you do not have a tissue handy. Lead by example and teach your family to follow suit. Get a flu shot - The most effective way to decrease complications and reduce the impact of the flu is to get a preventative vaccine shot. The North American vaccine is developed each year to work against three strains of influenza virus, based on trends seen in the Southern Hemisphere. The best time for vaccination is early October to mid-November. Truthfully, he didn't have to dig very deep. "I understand him," says the Pickering resident. "When you play a character, you have to find yourself in him." The 23-year-old actor and singer makes his debut in the role on Sept. 27 in the Lower Ossington Theatre production at the Randolph Theatre in Toronto. "It's pretty exciting stuff; it's one of my dream roles," Di Rosa says. "Growing up, I loved the movie. Who didn't?" Faced with a large room full of hopefuls vying for the role, Di Rosa didn't play up the gruff, ogreish aspect of the character, but what lies beneath. "At the centre of him is this big trusting heart and I think that's what he needs to be," he says. Perhaps a clue as to how Di Rosa can relate to Shrek is found on his Twitter page, on which he describes himself as having a "cynical shell with a soft chewy centre." He prepared for the role extensively, including mastering the Scottish accent that Mike Myers brought to the charac- ter in the film version. Unlike a new char- acter in a new work, Di Rosa says there are expectations that an audience brings when they encounter a familiar charac- ter. "I worked really, really hard to get the voice down, to get the mannerisms down," he says. "With something like Shrek, people have seen the movie and have come to expect a certain thing." Di Rosa has been pulling double-duty of late: he was also shooting a feature film, Fragile Minds, a revenge drama which he describes as "kind of dark ... definitely not a family film," during Shrek rehearsals. Look for it later this year. Di Rosa has been in Grease and The Wizard of Oz, but says Shrek is easily his biggest role to date. "It's the most fun I've had; it's the most interesting," he says. "The night I found out I think I shrieked and ran through the house." As for future work, he says he's hoping playing Shrek opens some doors for him and he's not ruling anything out. "I've been trained for everything," he says. "I would love to do TV and film and musical theatre is just a huge passion of mine. I've wanted to do it since elemen- tary school." Shrek runs to Oct. 19, Thursday to Sat- urday at 8 p.m. and weekend matinees Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. Tickets are available online at www. lowerossingtontheatre.com or by calling 416-915-6747 (credit card only). The theatre is at 736 Bathurst St., just south of Bloor Street. Supplied photoS Oshawa Opera’s debut performance Oct. 6 Afternoon at the Opera at Ritson Road Alliance Church Mike Ruta mruta@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- It’s high time an opera com- pany set up shop in Oshawa, says Kristine Dandavino. The mezzo-soprano singer and vocal teacher founded Oshawa Opera earlier this year. And a group of talented artists from Durham and the GTA present their debut performance, An Afternoon at the Opera, on Oct. 6. “We have a sym- phony, the Durham Philharmonic Choir, maybe it’s time we have our own little opera company here,” she says. “Oshawa is booming. I think it’s important to bring some culture to our Motor City.” Dandavino, who moved to Durham in 2005, says performing in Toronto and in the GTA she came to realize that some of her colleagues live in Durham. They include Jacqueline McIntyre, a soprano who lives in Oshawa, violinist Meagan Turner of Oshawa and flutist Joanne Averill-Rocha of Courtice. All are featured on Oct. 6, which Dandavi- no describes as an afternoon featuring most of opera’s greatest hits, with the artists per- forming solos and in ensembles. And Dandavino says some highly regard- ed guests are coming to town, including the “very famous and very down to earth” bari- tone Olivier Laquerre. He has performed across Europe and Dandavino says people have asked how she managed to get him. Oshawa Opera so far plans to have con- certs in the fall and mid-winter. Of the lat- ter, Dandavino says the “sexy opera,” Car- men, will be performed on Feb. 16, featuring Sarah Christina Steinert as Carmen. Dandavino says some people have approached her, “I’m not going to say shocked, but surprised,” and asked, ‘why are you doing this’? Her response has been, ‘why not’? “I think the culture of a city is everything,” she says. The Oct. 6 concert is at 3 p.m. at Ritson Road Alliance Church, 605 Ritson Rd. N., Oshawa. Carmen is performed at 3 p.m. at Kings- view United Church, 505 Adelaide Ave. E., Oshawa. Learn more about Oshawa Opera at osha- waopera.com. That’s why it’s best to bring in a professional, someone who can pinpoint the problem and repair it right the first time. Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons Waterproofing in Ajax has been in the business for more than 30 years and has been in close to 15,000 homes in Durham region. “I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can imagine,” he says, “and I’m still learning.” Crawford’s extensive experience has taught him to be innovative and try different techniques to solve problems. He takes pride in his troubleshooting ability. “I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reasonable cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles, but that’s because it’s absolutely necessary.” Crawford adds that if he can try something else first, he will. “An interior weeping tile system with drainage board can be extremely efficient and cost effective by saving costly damages to exterior landscaping,” he says. Crawford warns that it’s important not to ignore the problem. He says homeowners who invest in their foundations will save money in the long term. “Water corrodes and people tend to live with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one,” he says. “You have to get in quickly.” Crawford & Sons offers fast, neat, efficient service and a free professional evaluation. By winning both the season and the playoff, the team walked away with the cash prize as well as qualifying for the NAPA Nationals in 2014. The league was held every Thursday night at Petrina’s in Ajax. Seven teams com- peted in the league. Team members were: Tino Carinci, Marco Carinci, Scott Turnbull, Jeff Con- stance, Dean Ramsden and Tracy Senior. University Dillon Campbell named OUA football player of the week WATERLOO -- Dillon Campbell of Whitby was named OUA Football Player of the Week for the period ending Sept. 22. Golden Hawks running back Campbell was once again Wilfrid Laurier’s top offensive performer this past weekend. The third-year kinesiology and physical education major rushed for 155 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries in the Hawks 45-24 loss to No. 2 Western. The highlight of Campbell’s day was a 100-yard touchdown run in the second quar- ter, which set the mark as the second longest rush from scrimmage in Laurier history. His performance pushed him into top spot in the OUA for rushing yards and third in the CIS with 538. Campbell is a graduate of St. Mary in Pickering. PICKERING -- Pound 4 Pound MMA fighters Jason Hinds, Matt Kendall, Jeremy Carr and Patrick Reece have been selected to the Canadian amateur kickboxing team. They will be representing Canada at the world amateur championships to be held in Guaruja Beach, Brazil from Sept. 30 to Oct. 6. SarBrina ByrneS / Metroland Pound 4 Pound fighters off to kickboxing world championships Four make the Canadian team that is off to Brazil Brad Kelly bkelly@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- It didn’t start out this way, but in the end it’s safe to say some of the best kickboxers in the country reside in Pickering. Four of the six members of the Canadian men’s team that will compete at the WAKO world kickboxing championships from Sept. 30 to Oct. 6 in Brazil are based out of the Pound 4 Pound gym in Pickering. “It’s something almost unheard of to have that many people in the same club on the team,” says Matt Kendall. “You’re lucky if you get one person out of your gym to be on the team. It’s something pretty amaz- ing.” Kendall credits the coaching at the gym that helped elevate himself along with Jer- emy Carr, Jason Hinds and Patrick Reece to the international level. It was a gruelling process just to make the team, with 80 fighters invited to the origi- nal tryout, which was then cut to 40. From there a team of 12 men and six women were named to the team that would compete in Brazil. Four men decided that they couldn’t make the commitment, and two others were removed from the team, leaving just six, four of whom are from Pickering. Kendall, 29, is one of the veterans of the local group, having 25 fights on his card, with just six losses. He started muay thai at the club in 2009 after being handed a pro- motional flyer while sitting in a restaurant. He and Hinds are original members, and both hold multiple Ontario and Canadian titles. Reece and Carr also hold Canadian belts. The experience of all four helped lead to their inclusion on the Canadian team headed for Brazil. “We’ve been in big fights. We’ve had big fights. We have a lot of experience in a short amount of time,” says Kendall. Once they land in Brazil, things will get busy in a hurry. Some of the more popu- lar weight classes could have as many as 64 entries. In a round-robin format, some fighters could be fighting three or four times in a day. Carr is at the top of the weight class among the four locals, competing at the 178-pound level, while Kendall (156), Hinds (147) and Reece (139) round out the entries. Sara Kaljuvee to train with national rugby program AJAX -- Ajax’s Sara Kaljuvee has been named as one of Rugby Canada’s carded athletes. The centralization of Canada’s men’s and women’s sevens programs will be based out of Langford, British Colum- bia for their respective 2013-14 IRB Sev- ens World Series, thanks to the support received from Sport Canada’s Athlete Assistance Program and Own the Podi- um. Canada’s full-time training environ- ment includes: technical and tactical support through world-class coaching, nutritional support including breakfast and lunch most training days, medi- cal and strength and conditioning sup- port, video analysis and sport psycholo- gy. The centralized athletes are allocated Sport Canada AAP cards, with each card- ed player receiving financial support to enable them to commit to the daily train- ing environment necessary for them to be competitive on the world stage. Card- ed players will also receive tuition sup- port to attend post-secondary education throughout the year or after their rugby careers have finished. After starting her second year at St. Francis Xavier university, Kaljuvee’s rugby varsity team went to the CIS finals against Guelph and won gold. After that the Ajax resident joined the varsity hock- ey team and they won the AUS Division and went on to the CIS finals where they won bronze. The Pickering High School graduate tried out for the U20 Canadian national rugby team and was not only named to the team but also became captain. The team went to England for the Nations Cup tournament against England, South Africa and the USA. Canada made it to the final against the USA and won the Nations Cup. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 2 6 , 2 0 1 3 33 APGenerals hit the ground running Michael Dal Colle leads OHL team to 2-0 start Brian Mcnair bmcnair@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- It’s a bit early for D.J. Smith to get too excited, but he sure has seen some encouraging signs from his Oshawa Gener- als already. Not the least of which, of course, was coming away with four points in two road games to start the Ontario Hockey League season, wins of 4-3 over the Windsor Spit- fires Thursday and 5-4 over the Sarnia Sting Friday. “I’d be lying if I said I saw us coming out the chute two-and-oh with so many young guys and all that, but some guys played a little bit above their head I think, and they played hard and gave us a chance to win,” Smith said Monday. “Points, whether they’re at the start of the year or the end of the year, they’re huge,” added Smith, who expects his club to be battling for a playoff spot this season. “It’s always nice to get your first win under your belt because there are definitely highs and lows in this league.” There were a number of dazzling indi- vidual performances in the first two games, especially from the line of recently acquired Josh Sterk between Michael Dal Colle and Hunter Smith. Dal Colle, coming off a strong rookie sea- son, is showing early that he is indeed a top prospect for the next National Hockey League draft, leading the league with seven points, including four goals. On Monday, he was named the OHL player of the week. “With the puck, he makes something happen every time,” Smith said of Dal Colle, who played on the team’s top line as a rookie, with the now departed Boone Jenner and Tyler Biggs. “I think a lot of it has to do with the addition of Sterk and the way he’s played so far. It’s given us two lines where prior to him coming, when you only have one line of older guys, it’s easy for the other teams to hone in on that and shut you down.” With the top line of centre Cole Cassels with Bradley Latour and Joe Manchurek held pretty much in check, the second line combined for 15 points, including five from Sterk and two game-winning goals from Smith. Smith, a six-foot-six right winger and for- mer second-round draft pick of the Spit- fires, is coming off a season in which he had only one point in 30 games, in part because he missed three months after being cut by a skate. Coach Smith praised his work ethic in the off-season, which showed in a strong pre-season and has carried over so far. “It would have been easy for him to quit (after last season), but he worked hard, he lost 15 or 20 pounds, he came back more confident, and it’s good to see him off to a good start,” the coach said of his 18-year- old namesake, who broke ties with 3:14 remaining Thursday and 12 seconds left Friday. “Had he not gotten himself into great shape, he wouldn’t even have the opportunity to be on the ice in those situa- tions.” Smith also praised the play of cen- tre Brian Hughes and defenceman Josh Brown, who were instrumental in holding the Sting scoreless on 10 chances with the man advantage Friday. Brown, at six-foot-four, is another big play- er who has bloomed late, and was selected in the 2013 NHL draft by Florida Panthers a year after he was first eligible. “Josh Brown coming back from pro camp makes a big, big difference,” Smith said of the 19 year old. “He can handle the high- end players in our league. He’s a big, strong guy who is a better skater than people give him credit for. He plays tough, he’s hard to play against. Him coming back is a major, major reason why we’re off to two-and-oh start.” OSHAWA -- Michael Dal Colle has been named the OHL and CHL player of the week after leading the Oshawa Generals to a pair of wins to start the season. New indoor soccer facility coming to Pickering Project is a partnership with City and Pickering Soccer Club Ye ar-round soccer is coming to Pickering after councillors put the final stamp of approval on the proposed indoor facility at the Council meeting on Sep 16. “This facility is intended to provide the city’s youth and adult residents with year-round athletic facilities focusing mostly on developing soccer players but also meeting the requirements for other sports,” explained Corrado Roccasalva, Vice-President of the Pickering Soccer Club. The facility will be built at 1955 Clements Rd. and will include a full-size soccer pitch housed under an air-supported dome, attached change rooms, meeting rooms and administration facilities for the club. Construction is anticipated to begin in October 2013 and be completed by April 2014. All the club’s winter programs for 2014-15 will take place in our new indoor facility. The facility will be operated by PSC, with the club fully responsible for ongoing operating costs and repaying the capital cost plus interest. Councillors expressed unanimous enthusiasm over the proposal. Mayor Dave Ryan also praised the partnership. “There’s been a long-standing relationship between the City and the club,” Mayor Ryan said. “We’ve watched you grow and I’m very pleased with what you do for youth in our community and all ages.” Fourth win in a row for Dolphins peewees PICKERING -- The Ajax-Picker- ing Dolphins hosted the Hamil- ton Jr. Ti-Cats at Kinsmen Field in Pickering for a triple-header. The Dolphins’ fall teams are playing in the newly constituted OVFL fall league against some of the best football players in south- ern Ontario. The opening game featured the winless atom team, at 0-3 and hungry for its first win. The atoms did not disappoint, coming out strong and going on to their first shutout victory of the season, defeating the Ti-cats 33-0. Next up was the undefeated peewee team. The peewees were in tough against a big determined Hamilton squad who jumped out to an early 8-0 lead. The Dolphins defence, led by Tre Antoine and Aidan Simpson, spent much of the first half on the field, but man- aged to keep the Ti-Cats out of the end zone except for their lone score. The second half proved to be a tough defensive battle, with the Ti-Cats increasing their lead to 16-0. However, the Dol- phins owned the fourth quarter and managed to score 18 unan- swered points, with the skilled veteran Disani MacIntosh finding the end zone twice and the newly acquired Jayden Smith scoring his second touchdown in only his second game of football, to eke out their fourth consecutive vic- tory. The final game of the day saw the Dolphins’ bantams fall to a 2-2 record in a battle with the Jr. Ti-Cats. du r h a m r e g i o n . c o m Ne w s A d v e r t i s e r • Se p t e m b e r 2 6 , 2 0 1 3 35 P PICKERING -- After eight races taking place from Windsor to Barrie to Toron- to, and with the top bicycle road racers from all over Ontario competing, Ema Archbold and Olivia Pali of the Madon- na Wheelers Cycling Club each made the final podium in both the series’ cham- pionship, as well as for the overall 2013 standings. The championships were held in Ancaster. The racing started with torrential rains and cool temperatures. Pali, 9, kept close to the leader on the hills in her race, and finished second, well ahead of the third- place rider. With the race points tallied from the final race, she finished a strong second overall for the Youth Cup Series in the squirt/atom division. Archbold, 11, avoided an early crash which split the field in her race. The hills and rain reduced the lead group to five by the end of the race. She finished third in the final uphill sprint, within a bike length of the winner, well ahead of the others in the lead group. This result solidified her third-place overall in the Youth Cup for the girls pee- wee division. Other Madonna Wheelers who com- peted in the Ontario Youth Cup this sum- mer included Ryleigh Sandford, Sum- mer Sandford, Jay Archbold and Jakob Meloche of Pickering, and Brandon Neto of Ajax. PICKERING -- Olivia Pali and Ema Archbold had a lot of success this season with the Madonna Wheelers Cycling Club based out of Pickering. While it’s common to see driveways being done in the spring, the fall is actually the best time to have it done. The cool whether helps the asphalt set, allowing you to start using your driveway again sooner. It also helps prevent tire marks that often come with the summer heat. “It’s not too late to have your driveway done,” says Brian, owner of C&R Paving. “We are working right up until November, and you will get the best price in the fall!” C&R Paving has been serving the Durham Region for 35 years, and has developed a great reputation for their quality work and great service. Driveways are guaranteed for 12 months, with an extended warranty available. “If you are starting to see cracking and/ or discolouration, you are noticing settlement near the garage or your driveway just looks tired, it’s time to have it redone,” explains Brian. “Once we’ve completed the work, you should get 15 years out of your new driveway.” To really enhance your home’s curb appeal, don’t just stop with the driveway! C&R Paving is a full service landscape design, concrete and asphalt paving company. That means that in addition to completing your driveway, they can also build an interlock, stone or concrete walkway, plant trees and shrubs and more!
