Tara HaTHerly

With Christmas and New
Year’s Eve coming up, here
are some festive drink reci-
pes to jump start a holiday
party.
Oshawa native and Toronto bartender
Nadine Donald offered up her favourite
recipes for celebrating Christmas and New
Year’s with friends.
“The holidays are a great time to get
everybody and have fun,” Ms. Donald said.
“Make sure that if you are drinking you have
a plan to get home or a place to stay. Pace
yourself with non-alcoholic drinks. I know
these drinks are tasty, but they will catch up
to you before you know it.”
Christmas party drink recipes
Spiced apple caramel martini
“Sweet and tart, this is a quick and easy
drink that everyone will enjoy. The graham
rim gives it a nice look, and tastes great
too.”

•Lemon juice
•Crushed graham cracker crumbs (avail-
able from Bulk Barn)

•2 oz vodka
•1 oz Kahlua coffee liquor
•Chocolate-dipped strawberries
Directions
•Shake liquid ingredients together with ice
in a martini shaker and strain into a mar-

New maintenance
and storage facility
built in Ajax
AJAX -- Durham Region Transit is getting ready
for a new rapid transit system with the opening of
a newly expanded maintenance and storage facil-
ity.
The expanded facility for Durham Region Tran-
sit’s Westney division operations, located on West-
ney Road by the Ajax GO station, includes a new
3,400-square-metre addition that will serve as
operational and maintenance space for addition-
al buses, three in-ground hoists, a degreasing bay
and 10 indoor and 52 outdoor bus storage spaces.
The $16.6-million expansion is the first step in
operating and expanding DRT’s new bus rapid
transit, which will introduce service from the Uni-
versity of Toronto Scarborough Campus along the
Hwy. 2 corridor to the Oshawa courthouse. Ser-
vice is expected to begin in June.
“DRT carries over 10 million passengers per
year,” said Roger Anderson, regional chairman
and chairman of the transit executive committee.
“DRT ridership and the Durham communi-
ty continues to grow. This is the beginning of a
Regional council-approved, long-term transit
strategy that will improve our transit system dra-
matically and address the growing transit needs in
the region.”
The Province committed $82.3 million to support
the implementation of the BRT project, including
$17 million to purchase 26 dedicated buses. Dur-
ham Region will be funding the remainder of the
project’s cost, estimated at $17.5 million.
“The opening of the Durham BRT Westney facil-
ity is great news for local commuters,” said MPP
Joe Dickson.
“When the new bus rapid transit line is finished,
more commuters will be able to leave their cars at
home and take public transit. Investing in public
Durham bus rapid transit on Hwy. 2 moves forward
transit helps reduce traffic gridlock, strengthens our local
economy and keeps our air clean.”
The new rapid transit system, dubbed DRT Pulse, is
expected to be completed in 2016 and will offer 7.5-minute
service during peak periods, accessible bus stops and shel-
ters and new, accessible, clean diesel buses.>
AJAX -- A brazen thief scooped several boxes of pain-
killing patches from a safe before fleeing from an
Ajax pharmacy last Friday.
Workers at the Westney Road pharmacy followed
the bandit as he fled to a waiting vehicle following
the 2 p.m. incident, Durham police said. No one was
hurt.
Police said the suspect, who wore a red bandana
over his face, made his way behind a counter at the
pharmacy and began scooping up items. He left
when an employee pulled him away from the safe,
police said.
The bandit escaped in a beige Pontiac Grand Prix
driven by an accomplice. He got away with six boxes
of narcotics patches.
Police are looking for two white men. The suspect
who entered the store is over six feet tall and between
275 and 300 pounds, while the driver is a slimmer
man with facial hair.

AP
OSHAWA -- Residents in Durham are
reminded that when the last of the holi-
day decorations are packed away, natu-
ral Christmas trees can be set out at the
curbside on designated waste collection
days.
Natural Christmas trees will be col-
lected for composting during the
second and third weeks of Janu-
ary.
For Brock, Scugog, Uxbridge,
and Clarington residents, Christ-
mas tree collection will occur
on Monday, Jan. 7 and Monday,
Jan. 14.
Ajax and Pickering residents’
tree collection will occur on their regular
collection day during the following periods:
Tuesday, Jan. 8 to Friday, Jan. 11 and Tues-
day, Jan. 15 to Friday, Jan. 18.
Whitby and Oshawa residents should
refer to their municipal waste collection
calendar for scheduled collection dates
or call their local municipality.
Trees must have tinsel, decora-
tions and stands removed. Trees
in plastic bags will not be collect-
ed. Trees exceeding three metres
(10 feet) must be cut in half. The
Region of Durham asks residents
to ensure trees are not buried in
snow or frozen to the ground.
A real tree can be turned
into mulch and reused in a variety
of ways. Real trees are grown as crops
and benefit the environment, unlike dis-
carded artificial trees, which end up in the
waste system.

Santa and his pack
PICKERING -- The staff at L.A. Pet Grooming welcomed Santa into the store for an
afternoon of photos along with donations of toys and food recently. Santa posed
with Ellie, Gus, Nigel and Nemo. All food and toys collected were donated to the
Pickering fire department for its annual toy drive.
Durham residents can
compost Christmas trees
AJAX -- Residents with fireplaces and wood-burning
appliances are being reminded of the associated
risks by Ajax Fire and Emergency Services.
As temperatures drop and winter approaches,
the department is encouraging residents to make
safety a top priority.
“Lack of maintenance is the No. 1 contributor
to chimney fires, due to the build-up of creosote -- a
highly flammable waste product of combustion,” said
Kyle Chamberlain, Ajax fire prevention inspector.
“Chimneys should be cleaned at least once a year.”
Ajax Fire advises that chimneys and wood
stoves should be inspected and cleaned annually
by a WETT-certified chimney specialist. Residents
are also asked to keep debris, decorations and
combustible materials far from hearths, to always
use metal-mesh screens for fireplaces and to leave
glass doors open while fires are burning. As well,
people should never use flammable liquids to start
a fire or restrict air supply to fireplaces, or burn
cardboard, trash or debris in fireplaces and wood
stoves.
Residents are encouraged to install stovepipe
thermometers to monitor flue temperatures, keep
wood stove air inlets open and use fire-resistant
materials on nearby walls. Branches hanging above
chimneys, flues or vents should be removed, and
chimneys should be covered with a mesh screen
spark arrester. Finally, residents should never leave
fires unattended, including while sleeping, and
should soak hot ashes in water before placing them
outside in a metal container.

Coyotes stalked
Ajax resident
To the editor:
Re: ‘Coyotes confronting people near Ajax
waterfront’, news, durhamregion.com, Dec.
7, 2012.
Thank you for your reporting alerting the
public to this issue.
My wife had a similar experience earlier
this year.
Two full-size coyotes followed my wife
and our 60-pound Siberian husky at the
back of our house on the waterfront on
Crawford Drive.
The two coyotes
took a 180-degree
circling position
and came within
20 feet before she
was able to reach
our property and
close the back
gate.
I am also concerned that the situation
may have been different if it was a child
with a small dog.
This type of recent behaviour is atypical
for coyotes.
Coyotes on the waterfront in the past
have not exhibited this behaviour and
mostly avoided contact with humans.
I am sure the Town of Ajax wants the
waterfront to be a place for citizens to
enjoy and for the animals to be in their
natural environment. The reality is that
humans and wildlife do not always interact
successfully.
The Town of Ajax needs to clearly inform
the public of its policy with regards to
addressing and reporting wildlife safety
concerns on Town property, so that area
residents can govern themselves accord-
ingly.
Gary Kuipers
Ajax
Ajax coyotes a danger,
should be relocated
To the editor:
Re: ‘Coyotes confronting people near Ajax
waterfront’, news, durhamregion.com, Dec.
7, 2012.
I am writing to let you know I am very
concerned about the recent sightings of
coyotes at Ajax’s waterfront area. I walk
in that area frequently and also take my
grandchildren to Rotary Park.
I realize that coyotes have a place in the
wild but for health and safety reasons I feel
the attitude of the Town of Ajax bylaw ser-
vices and the Ministry of Natural Resourc-
es is unacceptable.
The MNR suggests that individuals,
‘Stand tall, wave your hands and make lots
of noise’ and ‘Do not turn your back or
attempt to run from a coyote’.
Tell that to a two-year-old child.
Coyotes are unpredictable and have
attacked especially when hungry and in
pairs.
The coyotes should be trapped and relo-
cated just as other wild animals are, such
as raccoons.

Make holidays special for
people and animals
To the editor:
As the holidays approach we are all busy
shopping for our loved ones including our
pets.
We love to see our pets enjoy the season
as well, although during the holiday sea-
son it is easy to forget
about other animals in
need.
It is important that
during this season of
giving we reach out
and help animal shel-
ters and other places to
show our care and sup-
port.
Help make the ani-
mals enjoy the holidays as well by giving to
local humane societies and perhaps even
giving them a new loving home.
Make this holiday season a great one for
both people and animals!

a small gathering of two or three, all are
imbued with the spirit of the season. It’s
Christmas, a time to acknowledge peo-
ple in our lives who matter and a time, for
those of the faith, to celebrate the birth of
Jesus Christ.
This is the season of giving, of gifts, of
our love, of ourselves to those who matter
in our lives.
But if you’re looking, it’s not hard to see
local residents here at home giving all
year long. There were the students at Dur-
ham Region schools this year who under-
took random acts of kindness, an initia-
tive embraced by young students. Collec-
tively, they compiled hundreds of such
efforts, from holding a door for a stranger
to carrying a heavy load for a senior.
There was registered nurse Danielle
King and Whitby resident Adam Murdoch,
two strangers brought together by dire cir-
cumstance, who combined to save the life
of heart attack victim Dale Flaxman at an
Ajax intersection in early September.
There was the case of missing family pet
Tanzie, who was happily reunited with her
family because of the care and commit-
ment of another stranger, Bowmanville
resident Paula Bund, who had heard the
tale and helped track Tanzie down. Her
selfless effort is commendable and char-
acterizes the notion of ‘giving’.
And there were many untold, unrecord-
ed and unexamined similar acts that took
place every day. Such acts of kindness,
such ‘others-first’ decisions taken by indi-
viduals are the substance which binds us
in our communities, which make our cit-
ies livable.
Christmas arrives tomorrow.
When you are sharing and giving -- gifts,
love, fellowship -- think beyond the sea-
son.
Think about people like Danielle King
and Adam Murdoch, give a thought to
those school kids who have taught us, in
such a simple and straightforward way,
about the benefits of random acts of kind-
ness.
Let them set an example for the rest of
us, year-round.
Let us offer you a warm wish for the very
best of the season.
It’s the season of giving. Let that guide
us as we march together towards 2013.
Merry Christmas.

Program helps

AJAX -- Thanks to funding from the
Ontario Trillium Foundation, the After
the Bell program will expand in Ajax.
The program, currently at Bolton C.
Falby and Terry Fox Public schools, runs
each school day from dismissal until 6
p.m. for children aged four to 12. The pro-
gram includes daily time spent on home-
work help, literacy and physical activ-
ity and kids are supplied with healthy
snacks.
“Today is a celebration of a true part-
nership,” said superintendent Lisa Mill-
er at a recent celebration at Bolton C.
Falby.
The program was formed with funds
from the Ministry of Health Promotion
and the Town of Ajax, with the Durham
District School Board supplying space at
the two schools. The program is run by
the Boys and Girls Club of Durham, and
the cost is an annual membership at the
club, which is $60 per child. There are
subsidies for families who can’t afford it,
courtesy of the Canadian Tire Jumpstart
program.
Lisa McNee Baker, executive director
of Boys and Girls Club of Durham, said
the program will expand to Dr. Rober-
ta Bondar P.S. in January, thanks to a
$225,000 grant from the Ontario Trilli-
um Foundation. It will expand to a fourth
school in September 2013. The decision
on the fourth school that will get the pro-
gram in September 2013 will be made in
the new year.
Stacey Lepine-Fisher, manager of the
Early Years program at the board, said
parents can start submitting applications
for the program within the next couple
of weeks. Information will be posted on
the school and the board’s website, and
information will be sent home with stu-
dents.
“They will eventually expand outside of
Ajax,” said Ms. Lepine-Fisher. “The fund-
ing is only for the identified location, but
definitely, the After the Bell program will
expand.”
She said when extra supports such as
this program are in place, research shows
increased participation among students
and a boost in their provincial testing
scores. These programs encourage chil-
dren to attend more often, she said, as
they have something to look forward to at
the end of the day. Since their attendance
is up, their scores also tend to increase.
As part of the Trillium funding, the
community partners will undertake a
research study in order to get tangible
results as to how effective the program is
in Ajax.
After the Bell continues
to expand in Ajax

AJAX -- Melanie Alcock, program activity leader, Boys and Girls Club of Durham,
led an activity during the After the Bell program at Bolton C. Falby Public School. The
program recently received a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

of a true partnership.’

DURHAM -- Grade 5 students in Durham Region
can stay active over the winter with Durham
Region’s Grade 5 Action Pass.
The pass provides Grade 5 students with free,
unlimited access to public swimming, public skat-
ing and drop-in recreation programs until Aug.
31, 2013. Students can use their pass at participat-
ing municipal recreation centres, Durham Fam-
ily YMCA and the Durham College/University of
Ontario Institute of Technology Campus Ice Cen-
tre.
“Children and youth need at least 60 minutes of
moderate to vigorous physical activity, such as swim-
ming or skating each day,” explains a public health
nurse with Durham Region health department, Ste-
fanie Scapinello. “However, results released in 2011
from the Canadian Health Measures Survey show
that 93 percent of Canadian children and youth are
not meeting this guideline.”
In order to obtain the pass, students can visit their
local municipal recreation centre or Durham Family
YMCA with proof of address and date of birth. Stu-
dents registering in the townships of Uxbridge and
Scugog must also take a current one-inch by one-
and-a-half-inch size photo to obtain their pass.
For more information about the Grade 5 Action
Pass, call the Durham Health Connection Line at
905-666-6241 or 1-800-841-2729 or visit durham.ca.

DURHAM -- Durham Region nature enthusiasts
are invited to join people across North America in
a century-long Christmas tradition by participat-
ing in the Christmas bird count.
Last year, more than 2,500 Ontarians participat-
ed in the count.
This year, more
than 63,000
North Ameri-
cans are expected to
record more than 60 mil-
lion birds during the 113th
annual count, which runs to
Jan. 5. For the first time, there
is no fee to participate.
“With the Christmas bird
counts, citizen scientists are effec-
tively tracking bird populations and ranges,” said
John Urquhart, Ontario Nature conservation sci-
ence manager. “This is a cost-effective way for con-
servation organizations to identify trends, so we
can undertake conservation work where it’s needed most.”
The Christmas bird count is North America’s longest-run-
ning and most popular wildlife census. Durham Region
holds the honour of hosting some of the longest-running
counts.
Both novice and expert bird lovers are invited to partici-
pate. Counters are assigned routes to study, with tallies com-
pleted over a 24-hour period.
More than 120 counts have been organized in Ontario this
year. For locations, visit www.ontarionature.org/cbc.

Keep fire safety in mind
over Christmas: Chief
PICKERING -- Pickering’s fire chief is urging residents to stay
safe during the holiday season.
Join Pickering Fire Services in celebrating the 12 Days of
Holiday Fire Safety campaign, with daily safety tips to be post-
ed on Facebook at www.facebook.com/cityofpickering. The
campaign is designed to remind residents to keep fire safety
in mind during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
“Let’s make sure we have peace and joy throughout the sea-
son by safeguarding our homes and families from unneces-
sary fire risks,” said Fire Chief Bill Douglas.
“Fire fatalities across the province are at their lowest levels
ever, and we need your help to keep it that way.”
Something as simple as a pot left on the stove, or a burning
candle left unattended, can quickly turn seasonal festivities
into tragedy.
While the holidays are a time for celebration, Pickering Fire
Services is urging residents to drink responsibly to keep the
city’s roads and homes safe and reminding homeowners that
it’s the law to maintain working smoke alarms on every sto-
rey of their home and outside all sleeping areas. Everyone is
urged to take a few minutes to test smoke alarms and install
new batteries if needed.
For more seasonal fire safety tips, visit www.ontario.ca/fire-
marshal or pickering.ca/fire.

Pickering’s Anthony McCleary named
Coach of the Year by Athletics Canada
Strong stable of athletes includes Nikkita Holder,
Phylicia George, Justyn Warner and Priscilla Lopes-Schliep
BRAD KELLY
bkelly@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- There’s no questioning the fact Anthony
McCleary has surrounded himself with good people.
The stable of track-and-field athletes under his com-
mand at Project Athletics based out of York University
include some of the best in the country. Away from the
track, his circle of friends is very well connected with
what is going on around him.
It was through a friend that he found out he had been
nominated for the Athletics Canada Coach of the Year
award, and through another friend that he found out
he won.
First, the realization he had been nominated.
“I found out through a friend of mine who
said, ‘You have been nominated for coach
of the year’ while I was away at a train-
ing camp,” the Pickering resident
says of a conversation that took
place a couple of weeks ago.
Shortly after the
announcement of the
award winners were
made on Wednes-
day, another friend
broke the news to
him.
“I got a BBM
message that
said, ‘You’ve
won coach of
the year again.’
Then every-
one started messaging me after that to say congratu-
lations.”
It’s the second time McCleary has won the award,
having copped the top honour back in 2009, as well as
the Ontario Sports Award the same year. The finalists
and winners are chosen by Athletics Canada’s awards
committee from the nominee pool as put forward by
its membership. Also nominated for the Coach of the
Year award this year were Gerry Dragomir of Vancou-
ver, Dave Scott-Thomas of Guelph and Joel Skinner of
Sarnia.
“I was excited,” says McCleary of the recognition.
“There are quite a few coaches out there who are doing
just as good a job as I am, so I’m excited because of
who I went up against. To come out on top, it’s a privi-
lege.”
McLeary has a strong stable of athletes under his
direction, including hurdlers Phylicia George, who fin-
ished sixth at the Olympic Games in London, and Nik-
kita Holder, who reached the semifinals in the same
100m event. Holder’s husband, Justyn Warner, also
under McLeary’s guidance, reached the semifinals in
the 100m, and was a member of Canada’s 4x100 relay
team.
All three track stars are now living in Pickering.
He also coaches Whitby hurdler Priscilla Lopes-
Schliep, who was a bronze medal winner at the 2008
Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
“We have a pretty big group, and the group we have,
they are ranked the top in Canada right now,” he says
of the impressive cast of athletes.
McCleary will be honoured at the 2013 Canadian
championships in Moncton, N.B., which take place
June 20-23.

Pickering resident
sidelined for
2013 season
with knee injury
Shawn Cayley
scayley@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- Mike Lum-Walker long
dreamed of what it would be like to suit
up in the National Lacrosse League.
But thanks to a serious knee injury,
those dreams have been put on hold.
The Ajax native and ex-Whitby War-
riors defender will undergo surgery on
Jan. 8 to repair three tears in his knee
and will miss the entire 2013 season after
being drafted in the second round by the
Toronto Rock.
On the first day of training camp, Lum-
Walker aggravated a non-serious knee
injury originally suffered in September
while at Brock University, resulting in a
fully torn ACL and torn lateral and medi-
al meniscus.
The recovery time is anywhere from six
to nine months, Lum-Walker says.
Understandably disappointed that his
opportunity to play at the professional
level has been postponed, Lum-Walker
remains in relatively high spirits and is
looking forward to getting through rehab
and getting back on the floor.
“I was obviously heartbroken,” he says
of the feeling he had when the severity of
his injury was discovered. “I’ve worked
really hard to get to this point, but I’ve
got to remain optimistic and know that I
am going to be battling for the next year
and then trying to regain my spot with
the Rock.”
Doctors have told him that the prob-
ability of full recovery within the six-to-
nine month time-frame is very good,
and in the meantime, Lum-Walker has
touched base with a few members of the
Rock who have undergone similar sur-
geries in order to get an idea of what he is
in for over the next year.
“There’s a couple guys on the Rock that
have had it done before including Damon
Edwards, Bill Greer, Jesse Gamble. I think
there’s actually like six of them and they
all gave me advice and told me to stick
with it. They are supporting me, so that’s
nice,” he says.
Meanwhile, though the news wasn’t
good for Lum-Walker, for a host of others
around the league with ties to Durham
Region, the story was a little different.
Ajax Rock defender Alex Crepinsek, a
first-round pick of the Minnesota Swarm,
joins Bowmanville native Shayne Jack-
son and Kiel Matisz of the Brooklin Red-
men in the Twin Cities for their rookie
campaign. Also on the Swarm roster are
Redmen defenders Jeff Gilbert and Dan
Ball, while Courtice native Zach Higgins
has been placed on the club’s practice
roster.
Elsewhere, the roster of the Edmonton
Rush continues to contain plenty of local
flavour with the likes of Mark Matthews
(Oshawa) and Curtis Knight (Oshawa)
making a home out west with veterans
Zack Greer (Whitby), John LaFontaine
(Whitby) and Aaron Bold (Redmen).
In Buffalo, Whitby’s Nick Cotter returns
to the NLL with the Bandits, joining
Oshawa’s Shawn Williams, Whitby prod-
ucts Derek Suddons and Jay Thorimbert.
Redmen star Derek Hopcroft is on the
practice roster.
Veteran Gavin Prout is back for anoth-
er season with the Colorado Mammoth,
while a pair of Redmen in Adam Jones
and Cam Holding are as well. Ajax net-
minder Tye Belanger, acquired by the
Rock last summer, has made the practice
squad.
Rochester and Washington each have
one player with Durham ties, as Scott
Campbell of the Redmen is back again
with the Knighthawks, while Mitch McMi-
chael of Port Perry made the Stealth ros-
ter as an undrafted free agent.
In Toronto, veterans Steve Hoar and
Bill Greer are back with the Rock.
The NLL season begins with Rochester
playing Washington Jan. 5.

dream on hold>

WHITBY -- Mike Lum-Walker, left, shown here with former Whitby Warriors team-
mate Ryan Serville after winning the Minto Cup in 2011, will miss the entire 2013
National Lacrosse League season after blowing out his knee in training camp with
the Toronto Rock.

AJAX -- The Ajax-Pickering Raiders recently spent time as celebrity servers at a local

Dreams and Wishes
AJAX -- This December, the players of
the Ajax Pickering Raiders minor peewee
hockey team decided that rather than hav-
ing their own team Christmas party, they
wanted to give something back to a local
charity.
Teaming up with Boston Pizza in
Pickering, the 11 year olds were celeb-
rity servers earlier this month where they
raised $350 for the Dreams and Wishes
Charity in Durham.
The Durham charity works with local
shelters and ensures kids in these shelters
wake up Christmas morning with presents
under the tree.
Assisting the Boston Pizza staff, the play-
ers helped greet, seat and serve customers
who attended the restaurant that night.
Team members are Austin Aicken, Cole
Brady, Alex Bulanov, Kieran Campbell,
Matthew Erdelsky, Johnathon Harrison,
Brendan James, Jacob Kung, Ryan Nasello,
Braeden Pacas, Nicholas Papadopoulos,
Adam Perez-Salvador, Josh Robinson, Tay-
lor Rowed, Ronan Tracey, Camerson Shea
and Michael Wreglesworth.

Ajax Swimming athletes
post solid results at
Youth Cup meet in Etobicoke
AJAX -- A small contingent of swimmers
from Ajax Swimming’s elite, TAG and
senior squads attended NYAC’s annual
Youth Cup meet in Etobicoke and brought
home fantastic results.
Javier Acevedo, 14, continued his amaz-
ing season with three club records. Aceve-
do lowered his own mark in the 50m back-
stroke by half a second, shaved point-one
second off his own record in the 50m free-
style and then demolished Robert Gil-
christ’s record of 4:13 in the 400m freestyle,
lowering it to an impressive 4:02.47.
Joining Acevedo on the podium were two
of his teammates from the 13-14 age cat-
egory including 13-year-old Ethan Harri-
son, who lowered his best time by over two
seconds and grabbed a silver in the 200m
butterfly.
His time of 2:16.83 qualifies him for Swim-
ming Canada’s Western Canadian champi-
onships and ranks him second in Canada
for 13-year-old males so far this season.
Not to be outdone was Philip Kay, also
13, who picked up gold in the 100m breast-
stroke and silver in the 400m freestyle.
Kay’s 1:10.54 ranks him first in Canada
this season for 13-year-old males and also
qualifies him for Western Canadian cham-
pionships.
The trio of Acevedo, Kay and Harrison,
along with Steven Taylor, also took home
gold in the 13-14 boys’ 4x100 medley relay.
In the 11-12 girls category, Aryanna Fer-
nandes started her day with a best time
by three seconds and a silver medal in
the 200m freestyle, before proceeding to
destroy the club record and take gold in the
200m butterfly.
Her time of 2:25.21 breaks Olympic med-
allist Lori Melien’s 1983 club record by four
seconds. Fernandes won the event by 10
seconds and is now ranked first in Canada
for 12-year-old females this season.
Emily Vandenberg, 13, also smashed a
personal best, dropping her time in the
400m freestyle by 14 seconds. A time of
4:40.86 gave her an eighth-place finish in
the finals.
Rounding out the female performances
in finals was Carleigh Barrett. After post-
ing her second fastest short course time
to date in the preliminary session, Barrett
took home a bronze medal in the 15-17
200m butterfly.
Kevin Roberton, Christian Maindank-
ine, Ryan Kelly, Steven Taylor, Andrew Kay
and Shaun Hanycz all posted new best
times and appeared in the finals sessions,
with Kay swimming to an Eastern Cana-
dian championships standard in the 100m
breastroke for the first time.

I’m sorry we can’t be with you today
When all the family’s gathered in one place.
But we are with you in another way,
A current in the stream of what you say,
Alive within your consciousness of grace.
I’m sorry we can’t be with you today
An intimate that time cannot betray,
With you always, unconstrained by space.
I’m sorry we can’t be with you today,
But we are with you in another way.

In Loving Memory of a Dear Husband & Father Alfred CandyApril 15, 1932 ~ September 19, 2008
Christmas is here once more my Hon,
The lights are on the tree.
The only thing that is missing Alf
Is your sitting here with me.
We love and miss you oh so much
Your jolly laughter and gentle touch
Stay with God Alf and help
celebrate His day,
And wish with all your hearts
You could come back this way.
Merry Christmas Alf & Dad,
All our love
Arvilla, Linda & Alfi e
Wish you were here.

BRAD’S CHRISTMAS WISH
May you wish for what you get,
And may you get just what you need.
May you have a long life of love,
And free of hate and greed.
May all be forgiven,
In this life we’re living.
There is no greater gift in life,
Than that of selfless giving.
Let’s not forget He,
Who was born, who had no gifts to give.
Who traded off His own life,
So the rest of us could live.
His power lay not in his strength,
Nor His skill with sword.
His power lie in his gift of love,
And skill with spoken word.
And if you don’t believe in the Father,
and his Son,
Then believe in the power of just one person,
And see what He has done.
His story, and others like him,
Have changed the world forever,
History has taught me this,
Never to say never.
To friends, and family, all the best,
In this Christmas season.
May the spirit of giving live on in you,
Even if for no reason.
And to those of you now come and gone;
Those no longer with us.
I’ll see you when I get there, until then,
Merry Christmas
