PICKERING -- Looking back on the loss of wife
and mother Geraldine 20 years ago, the Hallett
family is amazed at the progress they have made.
The late Ms. Hallett was diagnosed with breast
cancer shortly after giving birth to twin girls
on Valentine’s Day in 1990, a timely arrival that
earned the family a photo in the local newspa-
per.
“Everyone was excited because it was twins
that arrived on Valentine’s Day, how special is
that?” recalls Philip Hallett, noting that their hap-
piness turned to sorrow soon afterward.
“It was a long journey, because first Gerry went
for chemotherapy and then there was counsel-
ling so it was all downhill for about two years, it
was very trying.”

Sixty charged
province-wide
on more than
200 charges
JEFF MITCHELL
jmitchell@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- Three Durham Region men
are among dozens of suspects arrested
in a sweeping province-wide crackdown
on child pornography.
Durham police assisted in the arrests
of men in Pickering, Oshawa and
Bowmanville as part of the operation,
led by Ontario Provincial Police. Police
have charged 60 men with more than
200 offences including sexual assault,
child luring and possession, distribution
and accessing child porn.
Police said 22 victims were identi-
fied during the investigation, and that
weapons and drugs were seized during
searches related to the probe.
“Child pornography is the sexual
abuse of children,” act-ing OPP
Commissioner Scott
Tod said in outlining
details of the inves-
tigation Thursday.
“Every image of
child pornogra-
phy represents
a child victim.
Every trad-
ing or trans-
mission of that
image represents
a re-victimization
of that child.”
More than 20 police services took part
in what police described as a co-ordi-
nated effort to combat the accessing and
distribution of child porn, a crime per-
petuated by online sharing and trading
of images. Police said they had identi-
fied nearly 9,000 IP addresses, including
users in Durham, suspected of having
been used recently to download child
porn.
“We’ve noticed
the num-
bers are
steadi-
l y
increas-
ing,” said
OPP Detec-
tive Sergeant
Frank Gold-
schmidt. “We have
to keep up with tech-
nology. It changes every day.”
Although the 60 suspects identified
Thursday were swept up in a co-ordi-
nated effort, police aren’t alleging they
were part of an organized community,
Det.-Sgt. Goldschmidt said.
“It’s too early to tell if these people are
connected to one another,” he said. “At
this point it looks like they were all oper-
ating individually.”
The investigation leading to the arrests
required “weeks of legwork” from par-
ticipating officers, he said.
And the investigation isn’t over, Det.-
Sgt. Goldschmidt said.
“We anticipate there will be several
more charged,” he said.
Among those charged are three Dur-
ham residents:
• Earl Everett Pond, 52, of Pickering,
is charged with one count each of pos-
session, making, accessing and making
available child pornography.
• Beverly Joe Gilbert, 35, of Oshawa,
faces three counts -- possession, making
available and accessing child porn.
• Thomas Hardcastle, 22, of
Bowmanville, is charged with one count
each of possession, accessing and mak-
ing available child pornography.
All three suspects have already
appeared in court, police said.

PICKERING -- A trio of suspected shop-
lifters sprayed a retail employee with
mace while fleeing a Pickering store last
week.
But the escape was short-lived, as offi-
cers closed in on the suspects as they
tried to escape in a vehicle, Durham
police said.
The incident began at about 2 p.m. Jan.
27 when two workers at a Brock Road
store pursued three suspected shoplift-
ers into the parking lot, Durham police
said.
As they were getting into a vehicle, one
of the suspects sprayed a worker with a
“mace-type” aerosol spray.
Responding officers stopped the vehi-
cle on westbound Hwy. 401, taking two
suspects into custody.
A third suspect fled on foot but was
busted by police nearby, trying to get
into a taxi.
Cops recovered stolen merchandise,
including several hundred dollars worth
of over-the-counter drugs.
The employee who was sprayed wasn’t
hurt.
Three Toronto residents -- Noah Tyr-
rell-Malcolm, 31, Honey Morris, 36, and
47-year-old Stephen Reynolds -- are
charged with robbery and possession of
stolen property.
Mr. Reynolds is also charged with
administering a noxious thing, weapon
possession and breach of probation.

On top of his wife’s deteriorating health,
Mr. Hallett was also dealing with a lawsuit
against London Life, which had unknow-
ingly cancelled a life insurance policy for his
wife, taken out before the twins’ birth. The
suit was eventually settled in Mr. Hallett’s
favour but the fight lasted five years, drag-
ging on three years after his wife’s death.
“It took a lot out of me, it started immedi-
ately after the twins were born and we had
to go to court,” he recalls. “I had to sell my
car to pay for a lawyer and take on debt. I’m
still bitter about it, but maybe one day I’ll
make it into a movie.”
Ms. Hallett requested an interview with
the News Advertiser shortly before her death
on Valentine’s Day, 1992 -- the twins’ sec-
ond birthday -- to deliver a message about
the importance of breast cancer research.
“She had a goal to make it to see the twins’
second birthday and she did,” said Mr. Hal-
lett of his late wife, choking up at the memo-
ry. “It’s still sad.”
At his side, ready with a comforting word
or touch, was Mr. Hallett’s second wife,
Rebecca Hallett. She had become a member
of the family when the Halletts hired her as
a nanny for the twins. She became so close
to the late Ms. Hallett that the ailing woman
told her husband he should marry her after
she died.
“We were like sisters,” Ms. Hallett said.
“Before she died Gerry talked to me and
told me I was the best thing to come into
their life, because I looked after her. And I’m
still looking after her now.”
For daughter Sarah Hallett, memories of
her mother come mostly from pictures.
“I don’t remember her at all, but I love
that my Dad loved taking photos of her, so I
always had a lot of pictures that I would look
at growing up,” she said.
Now 22, Sarah is studying human resourc-
es at Centennial College. Her twin, Donna,
is currently completing a work term as part
of engineering studies at Waterloo Univer-
sity and elder sister Laura resides in Alberta
with her husband.
“We were lucky because we still had a
Mom,” Sarah said of Ms. Hallett.
Ms. Hallett agrees, calling the whole clan,
including two of her children from a previ-
ous relationship, “a big happy family.
“I raised them from when they were 11
months so they’re like my own,” she said of
the twins.
“I raised them with good morals and dis-
cipline, they’re really good kids. We all just
live a simple, happy life. But we hold on to
the memories, we always remember.”
Mr. Hallett, looking back at that long-
ago photo, says it’s hard to believe how far
they’ve come. “When she died I was in all
this debt from our legal fight and I had three
girls to raise, including two-year-old twins,
things seemed impossible,” he recalls. “But
life continues and you make a new chap-
ter. This is really a whole new chapter and
we will keep moving forward and being
happy.”

Tory crime bill
Mandatory minimum
sentences questioned
To the editor:
Re: ‘Tory crime bill essential’, letter to the
editor, durhamregion.com, Dec. 14, 2011.
Although the letter writer may be correct
in saying that our society doesn’t have pub-
lic morality anymore, he is wrong in believ-
ing that mandatory minimum sentences
will protect our society.
Mandatory minimum sentences only
delay the inevitable; some criminals who
have entered the criminal justice system
because of minor crimes have become even
more dangerous criminals. They are more
likely to commit the same crime again,
or worse; commit more serious offences,
because of the prolonged environment
in which they associated with even more
hardened criminals.
If indeed the “rest is up to us”, don’t we
owe it to the children of our society to enact
better and more creative policies that work,
especially when past studies have already
established that the same policies we use
over and over again, don’t?

PoliTics
Harper has contempt for
Canadians, Parliament
To the editor:
The prime minister has taken his disre-
spect and disregard for Parliament and the
Canadian people to new levels.
He is now announcing Canadian govern-
ment policy initiatives to the international
community rather than to Parliament.
Announcing pension reform initiatives
at the Davos conference highlights the fact
that he doesn’t give a damn about Parlia-
ment or Canadians.
If he wanted to implement major reform
in the guaranteed income security or the
income supplement pension plans, why
did he not announce these as policy initia-
tives during the recent election?
Canadians have to get rid of this dictator
and his party of neo-cons.

No need to send Durham
politicians on trips
To the editor:
Re: ‘Sending politicians to China, Bra-
zil, France part of Durham’s $1.3-million
investment plan’, news, durhamregion.com,
Jan. 14, 2012.
At first blush it would appear the director
of economic development and tourism is
making a feeble attempt to justify her exis-
tence.
She is quoted as saying, “Being this
aggressive is something new and it’s some-
thing we need to do.”
Something new? On what planet has the
director been living? Trade missions have
been going on for decades but usually at
the federal or provincial level. Sending
local politicians to France, California, Bra-
zil, China and Germany would be a waste
of taxpayer dollars.
We have already paid the tab for council-
lors to travel to Germany and other coun-
tries with nothing to show for it. Further-
more, few if any of Durham’s politicians
or staff know anything about international
trade or encouraging foreign investment.
This ridiculous idea is nothing more than
the culture of entitlement rearing its ugly
head once again.
Pickering Councillor Jennifer O’Connell
noted in the article that the public tends to
have issues when politicians attend trade
missions like this, especially if we can’t
show anything for it.
She is absolutely correct; we do have
issues, especially when the Region sup-
posedly cannot afford a traffic light at a
dangerous intersection or repair decay-
ing infrastructure and constantly raise our
taxes, but somehow magically finds $1.3
million for the gravy train to leave the sta-
tion or airport.
There is no need for such extravagant
trips when we have remarkable real-time
communications through the Internet
and other forms of networking rather than
going on a sight-seeing tour of overseas
destinations.
The director should shake her head, do a
little more reading and less daydreaming
about exotic places, unless, of course, she
is willing to spend her own money.

Durham not seeing benefits of alliance partnership
Durham Region politicians are still wait-
ing for a return on their investment with
the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance.
Durham taxpayers have paid between
$80,000 and $100,000 per year for the last
14 years to the organization -- a public-pri-
vate partnership of municipalities, govern-
ments, non-profits and private sector cor-
porations -- to attract international invest-
ment.
The disappointing result -- zero on-the-
ground investment in any Durham munic-
ipality -- must give Regional councillors
pause as they consider the future.
The Region has been seriously consid-
ered by firms on a couple of occasions and
once was short-listed for investment by a
wind energy company, but that’s as close
as the investment effort has come.
And frankly, the empty rationalizations
offered by politicians and staff this week
-- such as the benefits of “indirect invest-
ment” by firms that open elsewhere in the
GTA and then use suppliers or services in
Durham -- simply aren’t good enough.
The annual investment is sent to the
Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance, not
the Greater Toronto Ancillary Suppliers
and Services Alliance. At any rate and by
any measure, the cumulative $1.4 million
spent over the last 14 years by Durham
Region has essentially served surrounding
municipalities far more effectively than it
has Durham.
Now, it must be said that firms will
choose where they’ll relocate based on a
variety of factors that serve their business.
The GTMA’s primary role is to provide the
data and information that companies need
as they consider their options.
Still, the disproportionate amount of
investment going to other areas of the GTA
raises questions.
To that end, we encourage Durham pol-
iticians to bring far greater scrutiny to the
GTMA’s efforts as they relate to the region
and ensure that taxpayers are getting value
for their annual contribution to the orga-
nization. What exactly is the GTMA doing
to promote Durham internationally? How
is it measured? What can be done here at
home to improve the region’s appeal? What
resources and expertise can be brought to
bear to better leverage Durham as a pre-
ferred region for businesses to relocate?
Finally, there must come a point where,
in the absence of any positive, measur-
able return on the annual investment, the
Region will have to reconsider and rede-
ploy those funds where they can be put to
better use.
In the simplest terms, it will take lead-
ership and consensus to say enough is
enough.

PICKERING -- Green thumbs yearning for
spring can get their garden on at Pickering’s
Seedy Saturday event.
The annual gardening event will feature
guest speakers, seeds for swap and sale, a
vendors’ area and refreshments at the Seedy
Cafe. Guest speakers include Laurence Pack-
er, professor of biology at York University, on
‘The Plight of Bees,’ and Wild Ontario, which
will be bringing along birds of prey for a dem-
onstration.
Vendors include the Cottage Garden-
er, Green Side Up Environmental Services,
Urban Harvest, Bee Wearables and more.
Local horticultural societies and community
garden groups will also be on hand.
The event is part of a nationwide Seedy Sat-
urday initiative organized by Seeds of Diver-
sity, a volunteer organization that conserves
the biodiversity and traditional knowledge
of food crops and garden plants and seeks to
raise awareness about gardening, the envi-
ronment and the importance of saving older
seed varieties.
The local Seedy Saturday event is organized
by the Pickering Museum Village’s heritage
gardening club, Bloomers and Britches. The
volunteer group researches, plans, plants
and maintains the historically accurate gar-
dens at the museum.
“This ties in with how pioneers would have
grown their plants so it fits in really well with
us,” said Mandy Smiles, event programmer
for the museum.
“We try to have a heritage component but
it’s also about organic and natural garden-
ing. We get an interesting mix of vendors and
guest speakers so it’s always a good event.”
The fifth annual Seedy Saturday will be
held Saturday, Feb. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in
the east and west salons of the Pickering Rec-
reation Complex at 1867 Valley Farm Rd. For
more information, or to join Bloomers and

comedy show
Online love in Ajax Feb. 12
second city
presents comedy at
st. Francis centre
mike Ruta
mruta@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- iLove, a funny look at
dating in the 21st century, is com-
ing to Ajax for an afternoon show.
Second City presents the play,
described as “a romantic dot
comedy,” on Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. at
the St. Francis Centre.
“It’s kind of a look at how peo-
ple date now,” says cast member
Craig Brown. “It’s almost like a
parody of eHarmony.”
The Toronto resident explains
that iLove follows a couple
through their relationship, “fall-
ing in love and finally saying those
words and getting engaged and
married.” They are interviewed
along with two other singles look-
ing for love.
Brown is one of the latter,
describing his character, Edrick,
as a nerdy Star Trek type.
“I’m just kind of a guy who’s
clueless when it comes to women
and would rather make out with
an invisible woman,” he says.
He says the subject matter is
ripe for comedy.
“What’s happening with online
dating is it gets so individualized,
you can break someone down to
a category,” says Brown. “You see
throughout the show how people
are very specific about what they
want but will also do anything for
love.”
The show is mainly scripted,
but he notes there are opportuni-
ties for the cast members to play
around a bit by going into the
audience, including “one real-
ly great scene that has audience
interaction.”
It also features a video compo-
nent where Second City alumnus
Fred Willard (This is Spinal Tap,
Everyone Loves Raymond) plays
a guy who works at iLove and
coaches the characters.
Brown explains that iLove is a
combination of different sketches
from Second City in Toronto and
Chicago that have been compiled
into one play.
Brown is a multi-talented per-
former and a member of The
Second City’s National Touring
Company. He co-founded the
award-winning sketch comedy
troupes The Sketchersons and
Bull Hooey, which have garnered
laughs at Just For Laughs Toronto
and other festivals.
He has appeared on TV in Rook-
ie Blue, Dan For Mayor, Almost
Heroes and The Jon Dore Televi-
sion Show.
He also writes and at present
is pitching a stand-up comedy
show.
“I think in Canadian show biz
you kind of have to do a bit of
everything,” Brown says.
iLove also features Stacey
McGunnigle, Allison Price and
Sean Tebares.
Tickets are available at the St.
Francis Centre box office, 78
Church St. S., Ajax, and at the Ajax
and McLean community centres.

call for artists,

show and sale
PICKERING -- While we’ve enjoyed a
mild, snow-free winter so far, thoughts
of spring and warmer weather are
beginning to creep in.
The PineRidge Arts Council certain-
ly has spring on the brain as it’s issued
a call for artists, crafters and performers
to take part in Artfest on the Esplanade.
The event, held in partnership with the
City of Pickering, is set for May 26 from
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Esplanade Park,
behind Pickering City Hall.
“This annual outdoor art show and
sale is celebrating its 16th year and will
feature the work of over 80 visual artists
and crafters from across the province,”
states a press release.
Visual artists are invited to show and
sell their work at Artfest. The deadline for
artists to register is April 5.
In addition to showing their talents at
the gazebo, performing artists are invited
to exhibit and promote their organization.
Those new to the event must include a
demo tape with their application.
Community dance studios, choirs,
orchestras and theatre groups are all
welcome to apply for an exhibit space at
the event to promote their organization.
The deadline for performing artist
sign-ups, at the gazebo and/or with an
exhibit space, is also April 5.

tration package, visit pickering.ca/great-
events or call 905-420-4620.

OSHAWA -- We asked Deanna Lewis, a composing staff member
at Metroland Media Group Ltd., Durham Region Division, to choose
the winners in our Megadeth tickets contest. It was appropriate for
two reasons: Deanna loves hard rock ‘n’ roll and many of the more
than 100 entries in our contest came from women. Fittingly, the first
name Deanna picked at random was Sheila Willis of Oshawa, who
responded with a hearty “really awesome!!!” when we passed on
the news. The second winner is Steve Proceviat of Oshawa. Each
wins a pair of tickets to the Feb. 7 show at Oshawa’s General Motors
Centre, also featuring Motorhead, Volbeat and Lacuna Coil. Thanks
to all of our readers for entering and watch for more contests in the
future, in these pages and at durhamregion.com.

Pickering artist rising
like a phoenix from the ashes
Pickering artist Blanka Hudu-Brej-
cha admits she has a “rebellious”
personality -- this in spite of being
born and raised in the (then)
repressive Communist state of
Czechoslovakia.
Her natural ability to draw and
acute artistic sensibilities were
initially thwarted by family and
“the state,” but training in anima-
tion and contact with other under-
ground artists in her native land
kept the creative spark alive. It
also helped carry her through to a
career as a commercial artist there
and, more recently, as a merchan-
dising designer and fine artist here
in Canada.
But, back in Europe, after years
in a state-controlled animation
employment studio and a mar-
riage that produced two girls,
but didn’t survive, Hudu-Brejcha
landed a prestigious job as an art
director in a multi-national adver-
tising agency in her newly democ-
ratized country. Connecting with
an advertising executive in Can-
ada, she came here is 1994 for a
new life and new marriage.
Again, however, the fates con-
spired to bring her down, as the
marriage imploded and, after suf-
fering through several years of
working menial jobs, she found
herself, literally, living in her car.
Gathering herself up, phoenix-
like, she landed a position as a
merchandising/display specialist
at Ikea and established a home in
Pickering.
With a more settled and comfort-
able life situation, her latent inter-
est in fine art finally got a chance to
flower. She took up acrylic paint-
ing that reflected her monumen-
tal struggles to survive and pros-
per -- the initial works being dark
and graphic “rocks-in-the-way-
of-happiness” depictions, done
in a style recalling her anima-
tion pictorial roots. Discovering
the dynamic Durham arts com-
munity, she joined the PineRidge
Arts Council, involved herself in
the newly established SilverStone
Gallery and was talked into sub-
mitting a piece to the Oshawa Art
Association juried show this past
June, winning first prize in acryl-
ics.
Now the phoenix is truly in flight.
And she is chafing at the bit to get
to the “thousands of ideas” for
paintings that circle in her head. A
Czech compatriot has invited her
to discuss involvement in her gal-
lery in Toronto’s Distillery District.
The future shines brightly for the
rebellious creative soul who has
washed up on our shores.
To connect with Hudu-Brejcha,
e-mail her at blanka.b.hudu@rog-
ers.com.

Two Annandale members,
Gord Norton and Warren Leslie,
competed in the regional seniors’
playdown at the Dixie Curling
Club Jan. 28 and 29 with three-
time Canadian seniors champi-
on, Bob Turcotte of Ajax.
Gord Norton plays lead, second
is Warren Leslie, Bob Turcotte
skips and Roy Weigand is vice.
The team is playing out of Scar-
borough Golf and Curling Club.
In the regional, they lost the A
side final, went to the B side and
won it, and now they advance to
the Ontario finals Feb. 22-26 at
the Simcoe Curling Club.
One of eight teams there will
represent the province at the
Canadian finals March 17-24 in
Abbotsford, B.C.
The annual Robbie Burns Fun-
spiel on Jan. 28 went well at
Annandale.
Barb Godfrey’s team scored a
rare eight ender. First place in
the bonspiel was Team Joly, sec-
ond went to Team Anderson,
and there was a three-way tie for
third to teams McPherson, Fer-
ris and Knautz. Everyone had a
great time, the food was great, ice
was good, bar staff was wonder-
ful and everyone liked the priz-
es.
An Annandale bantam boys’
team is headed for the Ontario
curling finals in Galt Feb. 8-11.
Team members are Andre Lima
with Evan Heaslip, Dylan Pierce,
David Dearness and coach Renee
Lalonde.
Last Sunday at youth curling,
the team was presented with a
cheque to assist them with funds
for the provincial.
A ladies’ Olympic Skins bon-
spiel is on the calendar for Feb.
11. It includes a continental
breakfast, two eight-end games,
lunch and cash prizes. The
organizers are looking for more
entries.
The Gore Mutual schoolgirls’
regional playdown is to be held
at the Toronto Granite Club this
weekend. Four Annandale mem-
bers who curl for Pickering High
School will be competing. The
team consists of Nicole Garden-
er, Kaitlin Jewer, Vanessa Aune,
and Alison Gardener with teach-
er/coach Ms. Gorecki.

Rock adds some offence to the fold
new ajax gM and
head coach Clem
D’orazio addresses
team’s needs
BraD Kelly
bkelly@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- In his first go-round at
the Major Series Lacrosse draft
table, the new GM/head coach
of the Ajax Rock figures he fared
pretty well.
The game plan going in for
Clem D’Orazio was to improve
the team’s offence which scored
just 147 goals in 20 games last
season. To address that, eight of
the 10 players selected on Sat-
urday in Whitby are offensive-
minded.
“I was looking to revamp the
offence and I think we did that,”
said D’Orazio. “That’s some-
thing we need to work on and
continue to work on with our
team. That’s what we were lack-
ing our last couple of seasons.”
With the first overall selection,
the Rock picked Shayne Jack-
son from the Minto Cup-win-
ning Whitby Warriors. Last sea-
son Jackson scored 31 goals and
added 53 assists for 84 points in
18 games at the Jr. A level.
“Shayne is a natural winner,”
said D’Orazio of the top pick in
the draft. “He’s played with a
good group of players who know
how to win, so that’s what we’re
hoping he brings to the table
with us.”
With the third and sixth picks
of the first round, D’Orazio went
with a couple of players familiar
to him through his coaching ties
with Brock University -- Craig
England and Kyle Davis.
England has also hoisted the
Minto Cup, twice with Orange-
ville in 2008, 2009, and finished
last season with 40 points on 20
goals and just as many assists.
“He’s a great team guy and he
also brings that winning men-
tality that we need in Ajax this
season,” said D’Orazio.
In Davis, the Rock pick up
another sniper and leader, as he
collected 79 points on 23 goals
and 56 assists last season with
Brampton.
“He brings an offensive game
every time he comes out,” said
D’Orazio. “He’s a natural lead-
er as he did for Brampton for
so many years as their captain.
Hopefully we can build on his
leadership skills.”
In total, the three first-round
picks bring 203 points with them
from Jr. A last season.
In the second round, the Rock
had just one pick, selecting
Tyler Tanguay, who had 20-46-
66 points totals in St. Catha-
rines last season. The third
round produced Tyler Walsh of
St. Catharines (47-34-81), Mar-
tin Whitaker of Mississauga (22-
22-44) and defenceman Con-
nor Daily from Burlington (4-8-
12). D’Orazio then went to the
Jr. B ranks for his last pick in
the third round and only pick in
the fourth, selecting Cade Zulak
and Brandon Muise respective-
ly. Zulak (23-33-56) played for
the Ajax Ironheads last season,
while Muise (43-71-114) was a
member of the Clarington Green
Gaels.
In the fifth and final round, the
Rock grabbed goaltender Cam-
eron Watts, who had an 8-6-0
record with an 8.97 goals against
average and .801 save percent-
age with St. Catharines last sea-
son.
The Rock protected Aaron

Valentine’s Day is
just around the corner, so
why not treat that special
someone to a different kind
of diamond this year? At
Diamond Shine, they will
have your vehicle looking
brand new and they have gift certificates
available just in time for Valentine’s Day!
“For that special person in your life, why
not purchase a gift certificate for any of our
packages and ask about customizing a detailing
package that’s right for your vehicle? Save the
back breaking work to us,” says Joanne Elawar
of Diamond Shine. “We offer a wide variety of
packages starting from as low as $19.95.”
Winter is a great time to protect your
vehicle from the elements - inside and out! A
Diamond Shine wax will not
only bring back your vehicle’s
shine, it will also help protect it
from the harsh winter elements.
Salt, slush and snow can
also damage your vehicle’s
upholstery, which is why it’s a
great idea to have the fabric protected. After
the fabric has been cleaned, a fabric protection
is applied, which will help repel stains and salt,
preventing damage.
It’s called detailing for a reason. At
Diamond Shine, their showroom package
leaves no small space untouched. To achieve
a showroom look, they use toothbrushes and
Q-Tips to get to the hard to reach areas. They
only use the best products, to ensure superior
results.
Diamond Shine is open all year
round, and winter is a good time to avoid the
local car wash. Winter brings slush, snow and
ice cold temperatures. Before you head through
the local car wash, remember that the water left
on your vehicle will freeze when you get back
on the road Bring your vehicle into Diamond
Shine for a wash, where it will be hand washed
and chamois dried, all jambs will be dried and
the locks will be blown dry!
“We want to thank everyone for putting
their trust in us for the past 17 years, including
both our loyal customers and the many dealers
in the area,” says Joanne.
Diamond Shine is a family owned and
operated business that has been serving the
Durham Region since 1994. Diamond Shine
is located at 221 Westney Rd. S., in Ajax (just
north of Bayly and directly across from the Super
8 Motel). For more information or to book an
appointment please call (905) 619-2899, or
visit the website at www.diamondshine.ca.
Diamond Shine accepts all major credit cards,
including GE Fleet Service Cards, Wheels Inc.,
PH & H, ARI & Transport Action Fleet Service
Cards.
For your wedding or a special night out,
don’t forget to visit Diamond Limo at

OSHAWA -- The Ajax-Pickering Raiders won the Oshawa Spirit Challenge
Tournament.
Up to the challenge
OSHAWA -- The Oshawa
Spirit Challenge Tourna-
ment proved to be a good
one for the Ajax-Pickering
bantam AAA Raiders.
The Raiders opened with
a 3-2 loss to the Oshawa
Minor Generals, but
bounced back with a solid
victory of 5-0 against the
West Seneca Flyers. The
third game was against the
Ottawa Senators, a team
ranked high in the Ontario
standings, resulting in a 3-3
tie, followed by the same
result and score against the
North Central Predators.
The Raiders moved on to
the semifinals with a glori-
ous win over the Oshawa
Minor General 8-3. The
championship game was
now in place for the Raid-
ers to meet again with the
Ottawa Senators.
Overtime didn’t pro-
duce a winner as the score
remained 1-1. After going
through several players on
both teams in a shootout,
the Raiders come out with a
sensational win.
Players are Nick Bag-
nato, Payton Beckett, Zak
Bird, Cameron Bonk, Con-
nor Budway, Robert Clark,
Thomas Grant, Andrew
Hughes, Riley Kumano,
Marshall Lockhart, Kevin
Ounjian, Aiden Reilly, Alex
Schweitzer, Carter Senis,
Nick Thomakos and the
goalies are Paul Giusti and
Conor McCollum. Head
coach is Steve Horner, assis-
tant coaches Jamie Hertz-
man, Brian Horner and
Nick Lebouthiller, trainer is
Mike McCollum and team
manager is Lynda Reilly.
NBLC
Oppong, Power win another
OSHAWA -- For the
first time in nearly three
months, the Oshawa Power
have strung together back-
to-back victories.
Coming off a thrilling
110-108 decision over the
Moncton Miracles last
Sunday, the Power took to
home floor Wednesday at
the General Motors Cen-
tre and dominated from
start to finish in a 106-91
win over the Summerside
Storm.
Oshawa improves to 10-18
on the season and keeps its
playoffs hopes alive.
Offence from Brandon
Robinson and Omari John-
son led the way.
Coming off NBL Canada
player of the week honours,
Robinson scored 26 points
on 10 of 19 shooting, while
grabbing a team-high 11
rebounds and four steals.
Johnson was just as stellar,
scoring a team-high 29 to
go along with 10 rebounds.
Morgan Lewis backed
those two up with a
22-point effort, while each
of the nine players on the
roster made it onto the
scoresheet, including Pick-
ering’s Papa Oppong, who
finished with a solid seven
points and six rebounds.
The first quarter, some-
thing of an Achilles heel for
the club at times this sea-
son, was anything but in
this one. Oshawa jumped
out to a 31-17 advantage
after the first 12 minutes
and never looked back.
The Power are on the
road this weekend, fac-
ing the first-place London
Lightning (21-6). Their
next home game is Feb. 9
against Moncton, which
starts a three-game home
stand before the club hits
the road again for its final
four of the season.
