So you had better search through your attics and garages, go through your lock boxes and jewellery, because you may be sitting on a small fortune and not even know it!Roadshow experts are here to examine all your an- tiques, collectibles, gold and silver. During a show near Toronto, a woman came in with a jewellery box that she had just inherited from her late aunt.“I don’t wear jewellery,” explained Barbara Engles, “so it was an easy decision to come down to the Roadshow to sell it”.She was very excited when she was able to walk away with a cheque for over $2,100 for jewellery she was never going to wear anyway. Expert Elijah Gold explains,“We have no- ticed a substantial increase in the amount of precious metals such as gold and silver coming to the Roadshow, which makes sense considering how high it’s currently trading at.He added,“The Roadshow is great because it puts money in people’s pockets, especially during such hard times. Lots of items that are just sitting around collecting dust in basements and jewel- lery boxes can be exchanged for money, on the spot!” At another Roadshow event, a woman, named Mira Kovalchek, walked in with a tin full of hundreds of old coins that were given to her as a young child by her grand- the Roadshow and see what he had given her.She was ecstatic to learn she had coins dating back to the late 1800’s,some of which were extremely rare.Roadshow consultant Perry Bruce explains “We had uncovered an 1871 QueenVictoria 50 Cent piece, valued at over $2,000!! She had a nice assortment of coins that were not rare dates, but she was able to sell them for their silver content”.She explains,“I never would have thought that my old tin afford to renovate my kitchen”. Perry Bruce continued,“Canadian coins prior to 1967, and American coins prior to 1964 are all made with silver, and we have noticed a large increase of customers coming to the Roadshow with coins and cashing them in for their silver value”. Experts at the Roadshow will evaluate and examine your items, FREE OF CHARGE, as well as educate you on them. The Roadshow sees hundreds of people during a one week event, and they have been travelling across Canada to different cities and towns, searching for your forgotten treasures. Trains, dolls, toys, old advertising signs, pocket watches, porcelain and bisque dolls, pretty much everything can be sold at the Roadshow.Any early edition Barbie’s are sought after by the Roadshow collectors, as well as a variety of Dinky Toys and Matchbox cars.LionelTrains and a variety of tin toys can also fetch a price, especially if they are in their original box or in mint condition. If a collector is look- ing for one of your collectibles, they can always make an offer to buy it. A man brought in a 1950’s MarxTinToy Robot, in fairly good condition, still in its original box. They were able to locate minutes, and that gentleman went home with over $700 for his Toy Robot and a few other small toys. So whether you have an old toy car, a broken gold chain, or a Barbie sitting in the closet, bring it down to the Road- show, they will take a look at it for FREE and it could put money in your pocket! Cops began investigating the trio in early January after reports of two suspects stealing small but valuable items, such as perfume, electric shavers and battery char- gers, from stores in Pickering, Uxbridge, Stouffville and Toron- to. A third person acted as driver, police said. In some cases the suspects attempted to return stolen items for refunds or store credits, police said. Durham police executed a search warrant at a Toronto res- idence Jan. 12, seizing some of the stolen items. Finance minister and Whitby-Oshawa MP Jim Flaherty was in Whitby recently to seek input on the upcoming budget. While Canada has done “relatively well” in the global economic downturn, which has almost bankrupted some nations, Mr. Flaherty noted that the national and glob- al economy is not yet out of the woods. Although the government is predicting roughly two per cent growth in Canada in 2012, it’s not quite time to pop the cham- pagne, he suggested, noting factors out of the government’s control. “The situation in Europe remains really a crisis situation,” he said. “It hasn’t been resolved at all.” The Bank of Canada on Tuesday point- ed to the overseas situation as the main reason it kept its overnight rate at one per cent Tuesday. The low rates are something of a Catch-22, or maybe a Catch-23. Borrow- ing money is cheaper for those buying a house, prompting many to jump into the housing market. Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney noted this means consumer spending and housing activity are expect- ed to be the few bright lights in the econo- my. However both Mr. Carney and Mr. Fla- herty warned Canadians not to be com- placent as far as lending rates go: yes, they have been low for some time, and although that’s good for an otherwise slug- gish economy, ironically it could also be bad for the economy as Canadians take on more debt. Canadians have already been doing this and last month Mr. Carney said while Canadians are taking advantage of record-low interest rates, they are also tak- ing on unprecedented debt, also prompt- ing a warning from Mr. Flaherty. “We have been cautioning Canadians for some time that they need to be prepared to have higher interest rates in the future and be aware of the affordability issue that may create,” he said this week. In this context, the government’s priority has to be to steer the ship that is Canada’s economy through the ice-infested waters. Mr. Flaherty said the government is doing short-, medium- and long-term planning “so we have a sound economic plan.” This is needed to ensure Canada can deal with the current economic situation and at the same time be prepared for what the future may bring. For me, checking Wikipedia is almost sec- ond nature and I visit the site numerous times a day. On Wednesday morning, when I typed in a search, I was met with a black screen and headline that said “Imagine a World Without Free Knowledge”. The site was going dark for 24 hours to pro- test an American piece of legislation called the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). Among the many popular sites joining in on the pro- test in various forms include Google, reddit. com and wired.com. SOPA is championed by the entertainment industry which has seen its intellectual prop- erty, including new release movies and TV shows, freely shared on overseas websites. Often the content is hosted in countries such as China, where U.S. companies have no hope of going after the pirates. That’s why the legislation is now target- ing websites that link to sites with infring- ing material. This includes Google where a quick search on a new release movies brings up dozens of options for downloads. Social media sites where users share links would also be affected. The Electronic Frontier Foundation explains why the legislation is a problem: “That means social media sites like Facebook or YouTube -- basically any site with user generated con- tent -- would have to police their own sites, forcing huge liability costs onto countless Internet companies.” As it stands many of these sites have a complaints process where intellectual property owners can notify them about copyright infringement, resulting in the material being taken down. Sometimes the issue is straight up piracy, such as a user posting an episode of a televi- sion show or movie on YouTube. Other times, it’s inadvertent, such as when a teenager who loves a particular band posts a fan video or sings a cover version of a song. Google uses automated software robots to crawl the Internet, logging words on millions of websites which allows it to supply relevant results when you search a keyword. Humans don’t physically enter the material that ends up on a Google search results page. In order to actively police content, sites like Wikipedia, YouTube and Facebook would have to vet every link posted on the site, great- ly decreasing the amount of content users share. If they don’t, they could be shut down. But why should Canadians care about American legislation? As Canadian Internet law columnist Michael Geist explains, one main reason is the legislation considers any domain name registered in the United States under its jurisdiction. As it happens, every website that ends in .com, .net and .org is reg- istered through a U.S. domain name registry, subjecting Canadian sites to the legislation if it passes. Some have argued that if the United States passes SOPA, other western nations such as Canada will be strong-armed into passing similar legislation. As millions of Internet users encounter the blacked-out protest pages, perhaps it will generate enough buzz that lawmakers will think twice about a law that has the poten- tial to cripple the Internet and they’ll go back to the drawing board in their efforts to stop online piracy.. It gives me great joy and satisfaction to see these kids grow and change and get on a good path in life.” For Mr. Bridgelal, now 22, the program changed not only his financial situation but also his belief in a better life. Born in Can- ada, Mr. Bridgelal returned to his parents’ native Trinidad when they were deport- ed in 1991. He returned to Canada several times before moving back permanently in 2008. “It was a tough life back home, we were living day-to-day always,” Mr. Bridgelal explained. “I’m a Canadian, I have something most people would love to have, so I thought I’d come back and try things on my own. My parents were sad, but they had prepared me for being on my own, they were happy I was doing this.” Upon returning Mr. Bridgelal secured a job at Tim Hortons, where he still works, but was having trouble making ends meet and didn’t see any opportunity for advance- ment in life until he saw a flyer for Skills Link. “It seemed like they helped people like me so I thought why not? I thought I’d give it a try.” Mr. Bridgelal was one of 12 students selected for the program’s 2011-2012 intake, and he was determined to make the most of the opportunity. He credits the program with helping him pay his bills through a work placement as a cook at Mary Brown’s, where he was hired to continue after the program, as well as improving his life by teaching him the importance of eating healthy and sleeping properly. He is also planning to obtain his high school diploma through a continuing education program he began in Skills Link. “I chose cooking for a work placement because it was something I knew and enjoyed but I wasn’t expecting to get this job, and I really wasn’t expecting to be good at it. ” Classmate Chantelle Washington, 20, also credits the program with getting her on the right path and helping her obtain an apprenticeship with an electrician. “After I joined the program everything just started to move for me, it felt like a big highlight in my life,” she explained, noting she had been feeling lost in life after a diag- nosis of Bell’s Palsy. “The program has been so positive, I’ve made so many changes I’m like a different person,” she said. On Friday, Jan. 13 local dignitaries including Mayor David Ryan, MPP Tracy MacCharles and MP Chris Alexander came out to celebrate with the students during a graduation ceremony at the Word of Truth Christian Centre on Bayly Street near Brock Road in Pickering. I can hear people talking but the words are not clear. A. If you can hear most people but cannot understand most of what they say, chances are that you have some form of hearing loss. Q. Does untreated hearing loss lead to “auditory deprivation”? A. Absolutely. With auditory deprivation, the brain gradually loses some of its information processing ability making it even more difficult to understand others. Research also shows that memory can be negatively affected. Q. Is treating auditory deprivation important? A. Good Health needs Good Hearing. If you have any concerns about your hearing (or someone else’s), schedule a hearing test no matter what age; we are a family hearing healthcare center. And, if you’re 50+, it’s even more reason to have your hearing checked. Q. Will I need hearing aids? A. Our professionally-trained staff will conduct a thorough hearing assessment and share the test results with you. No waiting. No worries. If you have hearing loss, we can fit you with hearing aids that are just right for you. The type of hearing aids depends on your loss of hearing, the shape of your ear canals and most importantly, your lifestyle needs. Hearing Aids are medical devices and need to be prescribed. Q. Do Hearing Tests cost? A. Medically necessary diagnostic hearing tests are covered under OHIP. Remember: Untreated hearing loss is no laughing matter. Avoid auditory deprivation by exercising your brain; be fit f rom head to toe! Call us today at one of our 3 locations most convenient to You! Close to 50 per cent of Canadians lived a year or more with their symptoms before seeing a family doctor. Of these, 16 per cent waited more than 2 years. A delayed diagnosis results in a huge treatment gap and prevents people from getting valuable information about medications, support and better disease management. To promote the benefits of early diagnosis, this January during Alzheimer Awareness the Alzheimer Society is launching its Let’s face it! campaign. The online survey, which was conducted by the Society in the fall of 2011, also revealed that the most common reason for the delay (53 per cent) was the belief that the symptoms were part of “old age” and would eventually go away. Another 39 per cent said their symptoms were episodic or didn’t take them seriously enough. Over a quarter either refused to see a doctor or saw no need to go unless symptoms grew worse. However, three-quarters of respondents – caregivers of people with dementia – admitted that they wished they had sought a diagnosis sooner to have access to treatments to manage symptoms. They also recognized other benefits of getting a diagnosis when shown a list of these. Seventy-eight per cent of respondents said that early diagnosis would help them put their legal and financial affairs in order; 69 per cent said it would keep the person with dementia at home longer, and allow the person to actively participate in decision-making. Sixty-two percent of respondents attributed better coping and living with the disease to early diagnosis. Chris Braney, CEO at the Alzheimer Society Durham Region says “We need to help Durham residents recognize the symptoms for what they are: signs of a brain disorder that will affect 1.1 million Canadians in the next 25 years. While we don’t yet have a cure, we can offer a wealth of information to help people prepare for their future needs.” During Alzheimer Awareness Month, the Alzheimer Society encourages Canadians to face dementia by visiting its Let’s face it! campaign site: www. alzheimerletsfaceit.ca There they can learn more about dementia and its warning signs and download a Preparing for your doctor’s visit checklist. The site also features moving testimonials of caregivers and people with dementia who tell what early diagnosis has meant to them. There are many con- siderations when determining the savings plan that's right for you: one option is a Retirement Savings Plan (RSP). The deadline for making RSP contributions for the 2011 tax year is February 29, 2012. Other options for working towards a financially- secure future include: paying down your debt or mort- gage, contributing to a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA), a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for your children's education, or other investments (such as mutual funds, equities, etc.). “RSPs are a great way to start saving for your re- tirement,” says Kathryn Del Greco, Vice President, In- vestment Advisor, TD Waterhouse Private Investment Advice. “However, ensure that you carefully weigh all the alternatives and find the right mix of investments tools that will help you achieve your short, medium and long-term goals.” Here are some tips to help you get started – or help with your current investments: • Evaluate your investment portfolio regularly. Ana- lyze your asset allocation and assess if it's appropriate for your required return, time horizon and risk toler- ance, as well as if you're on track to meet your goals. • Make sure you have a plan. Know what your goals are and determine what financial steps are needed to get there. An experienced financial advisor can help you build a custom plan suited for your personal situ- ation as well as help you manage it. • If short of funds, consider a loan for your RSP contributions. The tax-deferred compound growth on your investments could potentially outweigh the inter- est costs. • Contribute regularly. Monthly contributions can help you reach your total annual contribution goal. In- vestigate taking advantage of payroll deductions for your RSP if offered by your employer. • Be mindful of the limits. Review your Notice of Assessment statement provided by the Canada Rev- enue Agency to check the maximum you can contrib- ute to your RSP. You will pay a penalty if you over- contribute. More information about how to make the most of your retirement savings or how to start investing in RSPs can be found online at www.tdretirement.com. www.newscanada.com Balancing act: Saving for the future, but enjoying the life you want now Sav eUp To90%!o 90%!e Up TavSo 90%!e Up TavSo 90%!e Up TavSSaveUpTo90%!IT’S FREE! That’s why it’s best to bring in a professional, someone who can pinpoint the problem and repair it right the first time. Gordon Crawford of Crawford & Sons Waterproofing in Ajax has been in the business for more than 30 years and has been in close to 15,000 homes in Durham region. “I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can imagine,” he says, “and I’m still learning.” Crawford’s extensive experience has taught him to be innovative and try dif- ferent techniques to solve problems. He takes pride in his troubleshooting abil- ity. “I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most reasonable cost to the customer,” he says. “Sometimes that may involve excavating the entire perimeter of the house and replacing the weeping tiles, but that’s because it’s absolutely necessary.” Crawford adds that if he can try something else first, he will. “An interior weeping tile system with drainage board can be extremely effi- cient and cost effective by saving costly damages to exterior landscaping,” he says. Crawford warns that it’s important not to ignore the problem. He says hom- eowners who invest in their foundations will save money in the long term. “Water corrodes and people tend to live with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one,” he says. “You have to get in quickly.” Crawford & Sons offers fast, neat, efficient service and a free professional evaluation.
