The City of Pickering Cultural Directory and Mapping initiative will be a web-based directory of cultural and tourism information for residents and visitors alike. As part of the City’s cultural strategic plan, staff are com- pleting GIS mapping of the different cultural assets throughout the community, which will then be made available in a comprehensive web directory complete with profiles. The company has identified this region as prime territory for purchasing valuable diamonds and precious metals— especially gold and silver. The TGSDB estimates that local residents have millions of dollars worth of valuables that they no longer need or want. That is where the TGSDB comes in—they specialize in buying those items from local sellers throughout Canada. Items like gold coins, sterling silver, tea sets and old or broken engagement rings are in high demand and are being purchased in massive quantities. Another great way to see your profits add up quickly is through selling scrap gold. Currently on a national tour, TGSDB has included Pickering & Whitby on its list of stops for a limited engagement. For those who are unsure if their item is genuine gold or silver, or simply costume, the company will test it for free. “The best strategy is to bring all items to the show for a free evaluation by our specialists. It always amazes me how a small handful of gold and silver can turn into hundreds of dollars in just a few moments. We test and weigh items right on the spot,” Enright says. At a recent show, a small-town dentist had a nice pay day. “I have been collecting dental gold for years from patients who didn’t want their extracted teeth. It really added up—my check is for over $31,000!” While most people don’t have buckets of dental gold at their fingertips, they do have $750 worth of scrap gold scattered throughout their homes, according to industry specialists. In addition to scrap gold, fine jewellery and diamonds, coins are always a big hit. Offers will be made on most coins dated 1967 and earlier—gold coins, silver dollars, half dollars, quarters, nickels and dimes. Enright explains, “Canadian coins made before 1967 are worth more than their legal tender amount because they can contain up to 92.5% silver. Rare dates and mint marks can make them even more valuable. We recently paid $78,000 for an amazing coin collection. One couple brought in a rusty coffee can filled with silver coins, sawdust, and a dead spider. The can had been in the basement for years. We were happy to send them home with a check for more than $700!” Pickering & Whitby area residents should start collecting their valuables now to bring to the free event, which runs next Tuesday - Saturday. That works out to a $54 increase on the region- al portion of the tax bill on a home assessed at $300,000. The increase could decrease as regional council- lors go through departmental budgets early next year. Councillors voted 20-2 to approve the target dur- ing a meeting on Wednesday, with Oshawa Coun- cillors John Aker and Tito-Dante Marimpietri voting against the target. “We’re all interested in keeping taxes as low as possible. We can do better than a 2.35-per cent increase,” Coun. Aker said. The Region has $1.4 billion in the bank, he stated. “I expect us to come in well below 2.35 per cent. We’re cash rich and we should be better than 2.35,” Coun. Aker added. The budget guideline includes a 4.5-per cent increase, or $6.91 million, for the Durham Regional Police, and a nine-per cent rise for Durham Region Transit. Speaking to councillors before the debate, Oshawa resident Greg Milosh said he found the 2.35-per cent increase “fair and reasonable and reflects the infla- tion rate.” He didn’t like the increases being proposed to police or regional transit. “Justified or not justified, it’s a huge increase.” The Region has about 5,000 employees, including the police, making Durham the third largest employ- er in the Region, Mr. Milosh noted. “I don’t think the public sector should be one of the larger employers.” A report to councillors noted 500 additional employees are being requested between 2012 and 2016. The report noted the 107 requested for next year couldn’t be done with a tax increase of 2.35 per cent. Growth in the size of the Region is “a significant strain on taxpayers. Our tax bill is starting to resemble a mortgage. It should be more like house insurance. It should be an expense and not a burden.” Whitby Councillor and finance committee chairman Don Mitchell defended the staff report with the budget target, saying, “This is a guideline to staff. This is a ceiling. We don’t know the floor, but this is the ceiling.” Ajax Mayor Steve Parish said the recommendation is “very modest,” adding the increase isn’t “gouging.” “I’m surprised Coun. Aker, with his experience, is say- ing what he says. We don’t have funds in the bank. Those funds are almost 99.9 per cent committed. We can’t raid our reserves,” Mayor Parish stated. Pickering Councillor Bill McLean said going below two per cent would mean “something has to be cut.” Clarington Councillor Willie Woo supported the 2.35-per cent increase, saying, “Staff has done a good job to hold the rate to the rate of inflation.” The final budget is expected to go to Regional Council on Feb. 15 of next year. reGion Durham looking at 2.35-per cent tax increase DURHAM -- West 49’s ninth annual Coats for Kids campaign is on now until Thursday, Nov. 17. A letter writer wrote to complain that he got a $100 ticket for parking illegally at the Oshawa GO station. Well, tough. Of course he got ticketed, and he deserved it .... what he did was illegal. I park at the Ajax GO station five days a week. I pay for a reserved parking spot, and I am happy to see that GO is enforcing its parking regu- lations. Why should I pay when some- one else can park in a better spot than me, illegally, and for free? When a car is parked illegally, it is endangering everyone in the lot; the driv- ers who have to manoeuvre around it and the walkers who cannot be seen because they are stepping out from behind it. The letter writer should have researched his travel plans before he drove to the GO station; it is common knowledge that parking is at a premium at GO stations. Try carpooling, local transit, buying a reserved spot, catching the bus from a dif- ferent location, or using a different GO sta- tion. There are a lot of options available. At the very least, don’t whine about being ticketed for doing something illegal. J.M. Regional Chairman Roger Anderson apparently likes to discourage or dismiss genuine concerns by Durham taxpayers about high property taxes by asking the supposedly conversation-ending question: ‘which services would you like us to cut?’ It is not a matter of cutting services but rather dealing with the cause of the high cost of providing those services, namely labour costs. Approximately 70 per cent of Regional operating costs pay for higher-than-pri- vate-sector wages, benefits, severances and pensions. Mr. Anderson, Regional council and senior staff should concentrate their future efforts on negotiating labour agreements that reflect current labour market condi- tions. Otherwise, taxes will continue to increase exponentially. Mr. Anderson’s dismissive, cavalier atti- tude suggests a disconnect with the finan- cial plight of many of the people he serves. Graphic new images on tobacco prod- ucts represent the next step in the feder- al government’s campaign to reduce the dependence on nicotine and the concur- rent medicare system costs associated with addiction. Though it would likely do little to break the habit of a committed smoker, graphic and occasionally disturb- ing images on cigarette packaging may well deter those from taking up the habit in the first place, particularly young peo- ple. In a related development, earlier this month Oshawa MP Colin Carrie informed constituents that the federal Conserva- tive government is introducing new mea- sures governing the labelling of energy drinks. Previously classified as natural health products, the new measures will instead classify the drinks as food prod- ucts, requiring nutritional information on the label and opening the industry up to regulatory oversight through the Canadi- an Food Inspection Agency. Along with measures that would require the inclusion of ingredients, nutritional and allergen declarations, and a warning statement advising users not to mix with alcohol, the new rules would also limit the amount of caffeine included in the drinks. Few can credibly argue today about the punishing health care costs associ- ated with tobacco addiction and abuse, even as tobacco remains a legal product. And while energy drinks don’t appear to have the same sort of financial impact on health care, the reclassification of these products to permit regulatory oversight is well within the federal government’s pur- view. Given that energy drinks are partic- ularly popular among young males, the new measures will allow families to better determine consumption limits -- if any -- in their own homes and lives. Part of the new policy governing energy drinks will also require producers to sub- mit to Health Canada details regarding consumption and sales figures, which will assist officials in monitoring and deter- mining if additional requirements are needed. These measures, then, taken as a whole, are simple and effective in providing con- sumers with information they need on behalf of minors in their care, or for them- selves. Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com AJAX -- There will be screams of terror instead of the sound of music when an Ajax music school hosts a free haunted house on Halloween weekend. The haunted house will run from Oct. 28 to Oct. 31 at TEM HOME, which stands for “the everyday musician house of music educa- tion”, located at 386 Taunton Rd. E. on the north side of the road between Audley Road and Salem Road. It’s open to the public and free. Warren Muster, co-owner of TEM HOME, said this is the third year they’ve been creating their spooky scene. “We thought it was a good way to engage the public; I used to enjoy going to them when I was a kid,” he said, adding that for awhile it seemed like no one was decorat- ing their homes and haunted hous- es had died out. The music school is located on a two-acre property and the haunted house will actually be in the barn. There will be nine rooms in the barn, each with its own theme, such as the insane asylum, the haunted forest, the coal mines, the spider room and the zombie room. Mr. Muster doesn’t want to spoil the experience by revealing what happens in each room, but he said there will be plenty of scares. “It’s very interactive, there’s a lot of parts where you stop and some- thing happens,” he said. In order to make the haunted house accessible to all ages, from 2 to 5 p.m. the haunted house will be more family friendly so that young- er kids can walk through and it will be more lit up. Then the house is reset and reopened from 7 to 11 p.m. and actors will enter the house to add to the fright factor. He anticipates that it will take five to 10 minutes to get through the haunted house and people can go through in groups. Folks waiting to get into the haunted house won’t be bored because the Halloween theme extends outside. There will be free hot chocolate for everyone as well as a bake sale. People can also purchase a video of their trip through the haunted house for $5. Last year up to 300 people checked it out and he’s expecting up to 500 this year. In addition to a listing for the Pine Ridge Arts Council, the Silver- stone Gallery will also be included in the direc- tory. The gallery, which is run by the arts council and features local artists, will celebrate one year in the community in November. Collective agreement good through June 30, 2015 OSHAWA -- The University of Ontario Institute of Technology announced the ratification of a new col- lective agreement with the UOIT Faculty Associa- tion Thursday. Retroactive to July 1, 2010, the agreements will remain in effect through June 30, 2015. Key provi- sions include salary increases of 1.9 per cent in both the third and fourth years of the agreement, and a 2.25-per cent increase effective July 1, 2014. There are no increases in the first two years, consis- tent with the provincial government’s public policy statement with regard to compensation restraint in the public sector, according to a UOIT press release. And they hope to tackle this important issue among youth before it’s too late, through a mental health curriculum in local schools. “In Canada, suicide is the second lead- ing cause of teenage deaths, next to auto- mobile accidents,” said Michael Nettleton, chairman of the board at Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences. At the launch of a new campaign to intro- duce the curriculum on Oct. 18, Mr. Nettle- ton said research shows that more than 90 per cent of adolescents who commit sui- cide have some sort of mental illness, and sometimes these cases are not diagnosed. The curriculum is being piloted in 17 high schools to increase awareness of adoles- cent mental illness in local communities. In partnership with school boards and Dr. Stanley Kutcher, an internationally- renowned expert in adolescent mental health, Ontario Shores has organized train- ing for educators, teachers and support staff to help deliver adolescent mental health literacy to four school boards this semester. The boards are Durham public, Durham Catholic, Kawartha Pine Ridge, and Peter- borough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Catholic district school boards. “We hope to expand it across Ontario,” said Sheila Neuburger, vice-president of clinical services. She told guests that reports indicate only one in five adolescents with mental illness- es receives care. “We know that education and early inter- vention are vital in helping them get the support and treatment they need,” she said. Dr. Kutcher, along with the Canadian Mental Health Association, developed the comprehensive curriculum, and Ontario Shores funded the training and materials to the school boards. Ontario Shores’ rollout of the program is the largest so far. Dr. Kutcher is providing training to 150 educators and primary health-care physi- cians and workers while he’s in Whitby. The psychiatrist noted that the program’s launch is only the first step. “It’s a truism when we say there is no health without mental health,” he said. “But let me tell you it’s a long walk from that statement to putting it on the ground. He said providing information at a level where kids can see it and educating edu- cators and primary care providers will help bring more awareness to the subject. Durham District School Board Chairman and Oshawa Trustee Larry Jacula is pleased the Durham public board is part of the pro- gram. “Unfortunately kids will always have problems if we don’t have awareness,” he said. The You’re Not Alone campaign was also unveiled, which will feature posters, print materials and video that will be played in schools as well as Mac’s Milk convenience stores. Cobourg St. Mary Catholic Secondary School teacher Greg Conway teaches about mental health in his physical education class and said he’s pleased the curricu- lum will reach more students, noting many mental illnesses begin in high school. “The longer someone goes without help, the harder it is to treat,” he said. He said teenagers are bright individuals but may not act on their own to seek help for this important issue. “The kids need to know where to get help,” he said. Ontario Shores is also working on an ado- lescent mental health documentary that is expected to be complete in the next year. The Whitby singer/songwriter is offering a two-day songwriters’ workshop at the new St. Francis Centre, open to all Durham residents ages 14 and over. “This course is based around (my) newly authored Songwriter Level 1,” he says. “On the words side, learn to craft your ideas into lyrics with the write it 1, 2, 3 formula using a rhyming dictionary and thesaurus. On the music side, learn applied chord theory and development of melody with the special rela- tionship of the pentatonic scale and the rela- tive minor chord.” Beer, who’s been playing music for rough- ly 40 years, was the spark behind the Song- writers’ Music Festival held earlier this year in Whitby, which attracted songwriters from across Canada to the first-of-its-kind event. More recently, Beer established the concerts at the lake series held this summer in Ajax. The workshop runs each day from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Beer asks participants to bring their own musical instruments and songs. No experience is necessary. The cost is $68. To that end, they are spending this weekend making sure the coaches are up to date and armed with information they can pass on to the players. The association will have just over 50 coaches taking part in a two day clinic that will include on-field and classroom seminars this weekend to help improve the quality of coaching within the club. The weekend will take the initial steps of delivering its long-term player development program that Sports Canada has passed on to its provincial sports organizations. “We are ready to deliver this to the kids in our club,” says head coach Tony La Ferrara. “We put this workshop together and put our money where our mouth is. “It’s a new approach in develop- ing players.” The program Sports Canada has designed is to encourage and train players to become successful in whatever sport they choose. Each sport tweaks the program to suit its needs, with soccer identifying five or six stages of development that begins at the grassroots level. Skills are to be accomplished at a certain age level before progress- ing to the next stage. The Dolphins atoms met the York-Sim- coe Bucs on their home field in the quar- terfinals and sealed a spot in the semifi- nals. Running back Darius Brown rushed for three touchdowns. QB Riley McBride had some great passes and also rushed for a touchdown. Izzy O’Brien provided the extra points with the converts, while Dasani McIntosh added much-needed yards. The defence was also in great form as they put forth a combined effort to shut out the Bucs. Aaron Chung executed some great tackles and a big QB sack. Other crit- ical defensive plays came from Aamarii Notice, Nnico Martin and Hunter McDon- ald. It was a total team effort that resulted in a 30-0 win for the Dolphins. The Dol- phins atoms meet the Niagara Generals on the weekend in the semifinals at Kinsmen Park at 11:30 a.m. The Dolphins bantam team faced the Scarborough Thunder. This was a hard-fought game led by QB Jaylen La Touche, wide receiver Justice Johnson, running backs Jordan Grimes and Trey Humes. Justice Johnson was on his game, catching two touchdown passes from QB Jaylen La Touche. Jordan Grimes and Trey Humes were also in top form rushing for big yardage to get the team in scoring range. The defence, led by Nathaniel Benjamin, Kesean Bennett, Trey Humes and Mark Cruciano provided some crucial tackles. Nathaniel Benjamin had his best performance of the season, exe- cuting some big tackles and two QB sacks. Tariq Mitradee had an amazing catch that set up the second Dolphins touchdown. Other big plays came from George Goudo- gianis, Sean Foreman, Dylan Colthirst and David Pinnock. Also worth mentioning is centre Jaleel Esdelle, who not only deliv- ered the ball to the QB, but provided some good blocking. The game would come to an unfortunate end, as the Scarborough Thunder stole the win from the Dolphins with a score of 18-14. Football Dolphins atoms moving on PICKERINGPICKERINGADVERTISING FEATURE You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but carbon monoxide can have lethal consequences. Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas, and it’s toxic. Even the smallest amount of exposure can cause serious health problems, especially for the most vulnerable, including children and the elderly. What makes it all the more dangerous is it can be in our homes without us knowing. Once you know how carbon monoxide gets into the house and how to safeguard against it, you can protect your home and family. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas that forms when fuel-propane, natural gas, gasoline, oil, coal or wood is burned. Any appliance or device that burns these types of fuel can produce it, from furnaces and fireplaces, gas stoves and barbecues to cars. Inside your home, fuel burning equipment that is properly installed and maintained produces little CO, which is safely vented outside. However, if not properly installed or maintained, the gas can leak into the house (and quickly rise to dangerous levels). When carbon monoxide levels rise in your home, even though you can’t see it or smell it, there are warning signs. Carbon monoxide reduces the amount of oxygen in your blood. Signs of exposure range from headache (this is the most common and earliest symptom), shortness of breath, tiredness and other flu-like symptoms. Indications of more serious levels of gas include nausea, dizziness, chest pain and disorientation (these symptoms can also occur if a person has been exposed to low levels of CO for long periods of time). At very high levels, this gas can cause convulsions, unconsciousness, coma, brain damage or death. The best defence is to ensure carbon monoxide has no way of getting inside the house. First, it’s important to have your furnace checked annually by a professional to ensure it’s in good working order. Chimneys and vents should be inspected each year for cracks, blockages or damage and fireplaces need to be examined for blocked or closed flues. Periodically, you can also check outside to make sure exhaust vents for the dryer, furnace, wood-burning or gas stove are clear of debris, including lint, leaves or snow. The garage is another source of concern, whether it’s attached to the house or not. Never let a car idle in the garage, even if the door is open. It’s best never to run any gas-powered equipment - whether a snow blower, lawn mower or tool - there. Once you’ve done your best to ensure your home is protected from carbon monoxide leaks, the next step is to install CO detectors. It’s smart, and in some cities, it’s the law.
