PICKERING -- A Pickering man is sick of shov-
elling the snow on his sidewalk over and over
again after each big snowfall.
Rosebank Road resident Philip Jackson claims
he constantly has to shovel his sidewalk due to
the street plow dumping snow right back onto
his sidewalk after he’s done the hard work.
“The same problems continue to resurface,”
he said. “They don’t solve them. They just react
to them.”
City superintendent of municipal opera-
tions, John Hannah, said with a municipality of
94,000, it’s impossible to make everyone happy.
“We have to have acceptable consistent ser-
vices and right now we feel ours are really very
well done,” he said.
Mr. Jackson’s complaint to the City saw Ward 1
City Councillor Kevin Ashe assess the situation
and the problem was solved for the time being,
Mr. Jackson said.
“I was pleased that they responded but I was
disappointed that it took that amount of effort
to get somebody to say ‘hey, this is an incorrect
situation.’ And we’ve complained about this,” he
said.

Province gives $600,000 to
Central East Local Health
Integration Network
hospitals
DURHAM -- Thanks to improving their
emergency room wait times, some Durham
hospitals are getting extra funding.
Through the Pay-for-Results program, the
Province is handing out more than $600,000
to seven hospitals in the Central East Local
Health Integration Network. According
to a CE LHIN press release, the program
ensures more patients are admitted or dis-
charged within the provincial wait time
targets, helping hospitals reduce the time
patients spend in the emergency room.
The provincial wait times target for
patients to spend in emergency rooms,
including time to be seen, treated and
discharged or admitted, is four hours for
patients with non-complex conditions, and
eight hours for patients with complex or
serious conditions.
“Many Central East LHIN residents are
now better able to access hospital emer-
gency room services and in many cases get
in and out of hospital emergency rooms
more quickly, thanks to initiatives like Pay
for Results,” said Deb Matthews, Minister
of Health and Long-Term Care. “Our hospi-
tals are working hard to improve access to
ER services and bring down waiting times.
I want to congratulate them for making
encouraging progress.”
Performance tracking at the seven hos-
pitals shows that between 85 and 91 per
cent of patients are being seen within tar-
get. The Rouge Valley Health System Ajax
and Pickering hospital was given $90,500
for seeing 89 per cent of patients within
target and Lakeridge Health Corporation’s
Bowmanville site is receiving $33,100 for
also seeing 89 per cent within target.
The other hospitals receiving funding are
Northumberland Hills Hospital, Peterbor-
ough Regional Health Centre, Ross Memo-
rial hospitals, RVHS Centenary Campus
and The Scarborough Hospital’s Grace
Campus.

contract
DURHAM -- Employees at the Wood-
bridge Foam plant in Whitby have a new
contract.
CAW Local 222 members at Woodbridge
Foam ratified a new three-year agreement
with 91.4 per cent support, during a meet-
ing Feb. 4. The deal was originally rejected
Jan. 30.
“I’m very happy the membership recon-
sidered their decision,” said CAW Local
222 president Chris Buckley. “In doing so,
they have kept good-paying jobs for them-
selves within this community.”
The company was set to ship new pro-
duction to plants in Canada and the Unit-
ed States if a deal wasn’t reached, accord-
ing to a CAW press release. The Jan. 27
tentative agreement included significant
changes to the current agreement, but
didn’t affect members’ wages or pensions.

Projecting $13.7
million over
several areas
KEITH GILLIGAN
kgilligan@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- The Region
is projecting a 2010 bud-
get surplus of about $13.7
million over several ser-
vice areas.
But the surpluses won’t
have an impact on the
proposed tax increase of
3.15 per cent in the 2011
budget.
Regional policy has sur-
pluses going into reserve
accounts to be used for
unbudgeted items.
The biggest surplus is
in the sanitary sewer sys-
tems, projected to be
about $4.8 million.
General operations,
which includes various
Regional departments,
such as social services,
health, planning, works
and clerks, has a surplus
of about $4.7 million.
Solid waste manage-
ment operations has a $2.8
million surplus, while the
water supply system proj-
ects a modest $100,000
surplus.
Also, Durham Region
Transit projects a $1.3
million surplus.
All the figures are to the
end of November.
During a meeting of
Regional council’s finance
committee Tuesday,
finance commissioner Jim
Clapp said the surpluses
remain with the depart-
ment or service that gen-
erated it.
So, the $1.3 million DRT
generated will stay with
transit.
Clarington Mayor Adri-
an Foster said, “I really
liked reading this because
I saw surplus, surplus,
surplus. I’m wondering
if there’s a hidden mes-
sage.”
There were about a
dozen instances where
savings were because of
staff vacancies, he noted.
In most cases, “I would
assume the vacancies
have been filled. For the
most part, they’ve either
been filled or are in the
process of being filled,”
Mr. Clapp said.
He added a $4.7-million
general operating surplus
on an $800-million gross
budget is “good plan-
ning.” durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • February 11, 20114

Improved efficiency pays
off at local hospitals
Less means more for local hospital
emergency departments in Durham.
The Ajax site of the Rouge Valley
Health System and the Bowmanville
site of the Lakeridge Health Corpora-
tion are being rewarded under a provin-
cial ‘pay-for-results’ program for their
successful efforts at reducing emer-
gency room wait times. Ajax is receiving
nearly $100,000 for seeing 89 per cent of
patients within mandated target times,
while Bowmanville is receiving $33,000,
also for seeing 89 per cent of patients
within the target. Current emergen-
cy room wait time targets, including
time to be seen, treated and either dis-
charged or admitted, is four hours for
patients with non-complex conditions,
and eight hours for patients with com-
plex or serious conditions.
It’s true that in the scheme of multi-
million dollar budgets required to run
a modern hospital, the money doesn’t
add up to much, but it does provide
further incentive for local hospitals to
improve wait times and efficiency. And
the Province’s Pay for Results (P4R) pro-
gram should further motivate hospitals
to continue the downward trend.
The bottom line is that patients in
communities from Pickering and Ajax
to Bowmanville and Newcastle must be
confident that their community hospi-
tal provides efficient, compassionate,
top-notch medical care. The emergency
department is the point of entry for the
vast majority of cases, such as those that
involve deep lacerations, pulled or torn
muscles and broken bones. By address-
ing the growing issue of wait times by
providing cash incentives, the Prov-
ince has sparked hospital officials from
across Durham to take action. The proof
of their success to date can be measured
in tens of thousands of dollars.
The results so far, says provincial
health minister Deb Matthews, dem-
onstrate that P4R is working, that more
residents in the area have better access
to local emergency departments and
that they will experience quicker turn-
around times.
And more can be done. We encour-
age local health care leaders to continue
finding efficiencies, removing obstacles
that add to wait times, and working with
their communities to educate and raise
awareness. Residents, too, can do their
part to ease the crush by taking non-
emergency medical conditions to their
family doctor or a local walk-in clinic for
diagnosis and treatment.
Local hospitals, however, are clearly
on the right track. In these cases, less
certainly does mean more.
-- Metroland Durham Region Media Group
American First Lady Michelle Obama
was recently quoted as saying she was
happy her two daughters couldn’t use
Facebook because of security issues. She
told the Today Show she’s not a fan of the
site.
The Obama girls, aged 12 and nine, are
just about the age kids start asking to sign
up for the popular social networking site.
For parents who don’t have presidential
security concerns as an excuse, it can be
tough to say no to kids eager to get online.
Oshawa resident Tom Violet told me his
10 year old frequently asks for an account
because his friends have them. So far, Mr.
Violet is not biting, insisting his son wait
until he is 16.
But it begs the question, when are kids
old enough to log onto Facebook and what
kind of rules should parents set?
Facebook has an age requirement, 13,
but there’s nothing preventing an 11 year
old from claiming to be 13 when signing
up.
On Twitter, Angela Galati (@partymom-
ma) writes it’s a good idea to respect those
rules.
“I think teaching kids to follow rules is
important so I’d role model that they have
to do it (at) the age stated by Facebook
rules,” she said.
One option for kids who are younger but
want to talk to family or close friends is for
parents to let their children use their Face-
book accounts on special occasions, such
as sending out an invitation for a birthday
party or sharing photos of an important
hockey game.
Before allowing kids to sign up, parents
must lay down the ground rules. The very
first rule should be that kids should use
maximum privacy settings at all times.
Important conversation topics include
online bullying. Local principals have told
me “I hate so-and-so” Facebook groups
are extremely hurtful and all too common.
Another important topic is appropriate
photos to share with friends and what the
consequences are of sharing inappropri-
ate material via Facebook.
For younger children it may be fair to ask
for their password, perhaps until they’re
15 or 16, and at a minimum parents should
also sign up and ask to be Facebook friends
with their kids.
Most kids don’t have a problem with that
and it can be a great way for parents to get
to know their kids’ friends.
In fact, a child’s friend list is one area par-
ents might want to pay particular attention
to. If a child has a lot of friends who are sig-
nificantly older or adults, that’s a warning
sign.
Parents should remember there’s a line
between paying attention to what’s going
on in kids’ online lives and simply snoop-
ing in order to fuel family arguments. The
latter will quickly get them cut out of their
kids’ online lives.
With children today, it’s not an issue of
whether they’ll use Facebook, it’s an issue
of when and it’s far better they navigate
that world with parents’ help and support
than on their own.

The Youth Centre is a community health centre.

TheYouth Centre’s social work
team can support you with
any questions you have
regarding healthy relation-
ships. Our medical team can
also offer you expert advice
regarding any questions you
have about your sexual health,
such as sexually transmitted
infections or contraception.
WithValentine’s Day on the horizon,it can be helpful for young people to take a look at
important relationships in their lives, and ask a few simple questions: What do you think
are important qualities to look for in a partner? If you have a partner does he or she treat
you well? Can you talk about your feelings?
In our world today, teens sometimes encounter sexual pressures and harrassment from a
partner,or others. This is never acceptable. Also,if your partner is jealous or possessive or
tries to control who you hang out with, and your activities, these are signs of an unhealthy
relationship. In a healthy relationship, each person has equal input, and repects the
other person’s opinions and differences. If you have concerns about your relationship, talk
to an adult who you trust,or come and talk to a member of our social work or medical
team.
If you are thinking about engaging in sexual activity there are other important questions
to ask yourself: Am I ready for this? Am I being pressured? What will this mean to my
relationship? Can I talk to my partner about protecting myself during sexual activity?
Be aware of the risks. You can contract sexually transmitted infections through different
types of sexual activity, and there are often no symptoms. Pay us a visit atTheYouth

Mr. Hannah is aware of Mr. Jackson’s
concerns.
“I explained our job is to get the snow
off the road,” he said.
He said the crews are concerned with
making sure the catch basins are clear,
and to prevent making the roads narrow,
the plows have to move the snow onto
the boulevards. It’s inevitable it will land
on the sidewalk, he said.
But Mr. Jackson said just looking at the
snow piled along the sidewalk should
have the City responding.
“Isn’t there anyone to have the eyes to
see this is not a safe situation?” he said,
adding it’s not just on his sidewalk where
he sees the snow piled up.
He accused the City of having little con-
cern for Pickering’s pedestrians.
While sidewalk safety is important, the
biggest safety risk is on the roads, Mr.
Hannah explained.
“Sidewalks are secondary in our opin-
ion because roads are where you’re going
to have the greatest risks,” he said.
Since residents are responsible for their
own sidewalks, the City clears commer-
cial walkways.
Mr. Jackson said the truck he watched
push the snow onto his sidewalk seemed
to be driving well in excess of the posted
40 km/h limit.
Mr. Hannah explained often the plows
may seem like they’re going faster than
they really are, simply because of the
loud noise they make. He said each plow
has a GPS device, which shows plows
usually go between 20 and 30 km/h.
Mr. Jackson is not the only resident
who complains; the City’s customer care
centre receives complaints regularly
throughout the winter on various issues.
“We take these very seriously, and we
follow up on them,” he said.
He said upon investigation, the com-
plaints are usually the result of a mis-
communication.
Some of the drivers tell him residents
will throw shovels at the plow, or jump
on the side of the trucks to give the driv-
ers a piece of their mind.
“They’re just trying to do the job that
they’re hired to do,” he said.
He said while people can make com-
plaints, he asked that residents respect
the drivers.
“The guys take it seriously,” he said.
“They leave their families in their warm
beds and make sure the job gets done.”

clearing operations, visit www.cityof-

Ajax man charged in robbery
DURHAM -- Two robbery suspects were
arrested shortly after an incident in
Oshawa Tuesday morning.
Durham Regional Police officers
responded to a street-level robbery at
Wilson Road South and Bloor Street East
on Feb. 8 around 10:15 a.m.
The victim, a 29-year-old Oshawa resi-
dent, was accosted by two suspects, who
assaulted him and stole some money.
The victim sought medical attention for
two badly-damaged teeth.
Responding officers quickly located
two suspects and arrested them without
incident. Investigators don’t believe this
was a random act.
Kyle Waldron, 23 of Lankester Lane in
Ajax, has been charged with robbery.
Matthew Mleczko, 22 of Wentworth
Street in Oshawa, has been charged with
robbery, assault causing bodily harm and
breaching probation.
Both accused were held for a bail hear-
ing.
Anyone with more information is asked
to contact Detective Dellipizzi of the Cen-
tral East Criminal Investigations Bureau
at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 2766.

UOIT’s
debenture Commits $13 million
per year to help
pay off loan
MELISSA MANCINI
mmancini@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- A new deal with the
provincial government will help
the University of Ontario Insti-
tute of Technology manage its
debt.
The school took on a deben-
ture -- a large, long-term loan
-- with a 30-year maturity in the
amount of $220 million in 2004.
The annual payment amount is
$16.5 million.
Every year since the school took
on the debenture the provincial
government has contributed an
amount to assist with the pay-
ment, but the amount changed
every year. Now the Province will
be giving UOIT a set amount of
$13.5 million annually to deal
with the debt.
“Up until now (the contribu-
tions) have been very variable
and very uncertain,” UOIT’s pres-
ident Ron Bordessa said. “Now
the big difference is there is com-
plete certainty.”
The university knows its pay-
ment will be $3 million so there
will be more time to plan bud-
gets accordingly, he said.
The time that used to be dedi-
cated to discussions with gov-
ernment officials about how
much money would flow into the
school for its debenture payment
each year can now be used to
make sure other UOIT business
is dealt with, he said.
Minister of Training, Colleges
and Universities John Milloy said
the government recognized the
insecurity of the situation that
came with having to come to the
table every year and discuss the
debenture.
“We’ve been working with UOIT
for many years to help them deal
with their financial situation,” Mr.
Milloy said.
Mr. Milloy said UOIT is an out-
standing institution that should
be in the job of educating stu-
dents, not dealing with financial
issues like the debenture pay-
ment.
UOIT is grateful that the gov-
ernment is “willing to contribute
in a long-term and substantial
way,” Dr. Bordessa said.
Car driven in the
movie ‘Red’ to be
available for service
CRYSTAL CRIMI
ccrimi@durhamregion.com
OSHAWA -- In the parking lot of
Lux Limo in Oshawa sits two bul-
let-riddled limos.
And it wasn’t gang action that
brought them to their current
state, but the type of ‘Action!’ that
comes with a clapboard — some-
thing their new owner is hoping to
capitalize on for business.
“That’s the limo that Bruce Willis
actually drove,” said Steve Hamad,
a manager at Lux Limo, as he
walked toward a black stretch
limo behind the agency’s Simcoe
Street office.
It, along with four others pur-
chased by Lux, were used in the
action movie ‘Red’ shot in Toron-
to. And soon, instead of starring in
big budget action films, their new
job will be driving the people of
Durham to their proms, weddings,
and other special occasions.
“I knew (buying them) was a
good idea,” Mr. Hamad said.
He came across the set of limos
while searching for vehicles online
and initially went to look at them
more out of curiosity.
“I was thinking they were in a
movie, they’re going to charge a
ridiculous amount,” he said, but
then he saw the vehicles were still
usable and available for a price he
was happy with.
The Bruce Willis limo, as well
as another that went relatively
unscathed in the movie’s produc-
tion, should be ready to join the
more than 20 vehicles already in
the company’s fleet by the end of
February or sooner, and available
at customers’ requests.
“It’s a one-of-a-kind thing,” said
Jeff Yoo, also a Lux Limo manager.
Unlike three battered limos
parked nearby, the Bruce Willis
vehicle looked more or less like a
normal limo, with the exception
of an oversized emergency brake
between its front seats.
“So when Bruce Willis is in there
doing the 360 (degree turns)... to
make the full turns he would push
on that to stop the back wheels
from spinning... to do the donuts,”
Mr. Hamad said, and added that
although it would have been a
stunt man doing the turns, Bruce
Willis still drove the actual vehicle
in the movie.
The other two limos considered
salvageable need a little more work
to hide their bullet holes, while a
third will be used for parts.
“This one here was blown up,”
Mr. Hamad said of a limo minus
its engine and sporting a smashed
front end, burnt hood and head-
light.
“This one was used just as it
was driving by, it was being shot
up,” Mr. Hamad said, referring to
another.
Yet another was shot and
smashed; its sugar-glass wind-
shield broken into pieces, interi-
or littered with bullet casings, and
exterior punctured with holes.
Bullet casings, which are really
more like mini firecrackers, were
still inside, he continued.
The tow truck driver who
brought the cars to Lux Limo
works for the production compa-
ny they were purchased from, and
explained to Mr. Hamad how the
cars were outfitted for the movie’s
shoot-up scenes, he said.
“That’s how they do it,” Mr.
Hamad said, pointing to the wires
inside one of the limo’s doors.
To make the car look like it was
being shot up, holes were first
drilled into it, then outfitted with
mini bullet casing firecrackers
which were wired to a detonator.
The limos were then fixed up
to look like nothing happened to
them, Mr. Hamad said.
When it was time to do the
shooting scene, the firecrack-
ers were detonated and busted
through the pre-drilled holes.
In the movie, the cars were used
as part of a motorcade for the vice-
president of the United States, and
the ones which are not yet driv-
able still have the vice-presiden-
tial circle on their side – although
it has to be removed by the time
they’re put on the road.
“You should have seen people
turning heads on the highway,
they were taking pictures and
everything,” Mr. Yoo said of when
the limos were being brought to
them.

Proposal for Coptic
Orthodox church
goes to City
PICKERING -- The City of Pickering
could be home to a new Coptic Ortho-
dox church.
The City’s planning and development
committee heard plans for St. Mary and
St. John The Beloved Coptic Orthodox
Church at Kingston Road, east of Brock
Road.
The church, if approved by council,
will go in the easterly building where
Jerry Gazarek’s former Sheridan Chev-
rolet Cadillac Ltd. once sat, until it was
forced to shut down due to General
Motors Canada Inc. cutbacks.
A day nursery associated with the
church and commercial uses such as
retail are envisioned for the westerly
building.
Mr. Gazarek, of Gazarek Retail Hold-
ings Ltd., still owns the property, and
was granted permission by council in
June to rezone the area for various busi-
ness uses.
Mr. Gazarek spoke on behalf of the
church at the planning meeting, and
said there used to be a Pickering Gospel
Church there before he bought the land.
He also noted in his 35 years of doing
business in Pickering, the municipality
has been a great place to live, work and
play, and a place where people can free-
ly follow their religious beliefs.
“This is what’s really important to
making us a great and vibrant commu-
nity,” he said.
A representative from a local day-
care centre, Muppets Children’s Centre,
shared concerns that the daycare may
pose a problem for business.
Church representatives said they
expect the church will mostly mind chil-
dren of parishioners.
The item was for information only, and
the committee will consider the propos-
al at a future date. durhamregion.comNews Advertiser • February 11, 201115

As we age, we develop wisdom and experience - but we also get fine lines, sun damage, and redness-
causing rosacea. A photo facial treatment gives tired facial skin a lift with minimal discomfort and no
downtime, and is useful in correcting many common skin issues. Harness its collagen-boosting powers to
combat sun and age spots, balance out uneven skin tone, tone down areas of hyperpigmentation and sun
damage, or put pores on a slim-down diet to reduce their size. One session is sufficient to see results, and to
illustrate the improvement, FreshTouch provides each client with their own set of before-and-after photos.

THEATRE LEGION IDOL
Idol hunting
at the Ajax Legion
Cash prizes up for
grabs in contest
AJAX -- Singers can win cash in Ajax
and support the local Legion at the
same time.
There’s $3,500 in cash prizes on the
line in the Ajax Legion Idol 2011.
The 2011 edition separates the prize
money for men and women, so male and
female singers can each win $1,000 for
first place, $500 for second place, and
$250 for third place.
Idol qualifiers take place every Tues-
day night up to and including May 10 in
the Club Room of the Ajax Legion, 111
Hunt St., Ajax. Registration opens at 7
p.m. and the contest begins at 8 p.m. The
contest is open to anyone 19 or older.
Singers perform two songs and are
judged by at least three judges. They can
sing to karaoke tracks, backing tracks,
acoustic guitar or acapella.
To make it to the finals, singers have
to be in the top two male or female singers
for two separate nights. But singers can-
not sing the same two songs they sang
on their first qualifier night to try to qualify
for their second night. To learn more, visit
ajaxlegionidol2011.robmac.org, e-mail
info@robmac.org or call 647-933-1225.
Any area music, radio industry or

teer as judges should call Rob MacArthur

A ‘musical soap opera’ in Whitby
Classic tunes,
performed by live
band, featured in
Suds
MIKE RUTA
mruta@durhamregion.com
WHITBY -- Community theatre
groups often seek a certain level
of comfort when they choose a
play to produce.
But such is not the case with
Whitby Courthouse Theatre’s
choice of Suds, running Feb. 10 to
26.
“It’s a musical soap opera,” says
director Mike Trites of Ajax. “It’s
a little-known musical. It’s not hit
Broadway yet, so there’s no record-
ing you can hear before you take it
to the stage, which is a little scary.”
He says the play “is so new, it’s
unknown” and as a result the cast
and crew are “going very blind.”
However, there’s at least one ace-
in-the-hole that lessens the anxi-
ety level: a live band playing clas-
sic hits such as Shout, It’s My Party
and You Can’t Hurry Love.
Suds is set in the early 60s in
a laundromat in the New Jersey
area.
“It’s about the life of a young lady
whose life is falling apart and all
of a sudden coming on the scene
are some unusual and unorthodox
characters,” Trites says.
Their goal is to make her happy
again, but it’s no easy task as she’s
been through a break-up and
recently lost a close friend.
He describes it as a comedy/fan-
tasy.
The band performs all the music
live and, from inside the laundro-
mat, Trites says it looks like it’s on
the street playing.
Apart from the music, Trites say
it’s hard to go wrong when you
have a production team of “all-
stars.
“I can’t believe they’ve all come
together on this,” he says, describ-
ing the team as “15 of the best pro-
duction people in Durham.”
The cast features Donna LaJe-
unesse from Bowmanville, who
recently performed at the WCT
fundraiser. Trites says her singing,
on songs like Respect, gives you
goose bumps.
Heather Gibb is also from
Bowmanville, while Heather John-
son and Jason Butler-Burns are
from Oshawa.
Trites says Suds is appropriate
for all ages.
He’s been involved in theatre
since high school, about 25 years,
and teaches drama at Anderson
Collegiate in Whitby.
Trites says he’s done a fair bit of
dinner theatre and often brings his
students into a production in areas
such as lighting, sound, backstage
work and acting “to immerse them
in theatre.”
He notes that one of the Suds
cast members and the show cho-
reographer are former students,
describing it as “a nice little circle.”
Tickets are available online at
www.whitbytheatre.org, at the
door or at LaFontaine, 100 Brock
St. S., Whitby.

Food, music and art on Valentine’s Day in Oshawa
Playoff time arrives in
senior boys hockey loop
SHAWN CAYLEY
scayley@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- It’s go time.
Go, in this instance, refers to playoffs in
the LOSSA senior boys’ hockey loop.
The regular season wrapped up yes-
terday with the St. Mary Monarchs of
Pickering keeping their perfect record in
tact with a 4-2 victory over Henry Street,
one day after Oshawa’s Paul Dwyer Saints
did the same with a season-ending 9-1 vic-
tory over Bowmanville.
But while neither team experienced the
feeling of defeat through the year, both
were locked in some tight, hard-fought
games, and are well aware that the going
gets much tougher come playoff time.
Dwyer and St. Mary are widely consid-
ered to be the favourites, and for good
reason considering their regular season
standing -- but don’t tell their coaches
that.
“There are a lot of good teams in this
league. If you look around, the top four
teams in each division are real solid,”
Dwyer coach Mike Wilson said following
his team’s game on Wednesday. “It could
be one-goal games between any of them
and the way its worked is we’ve been on
the winning end of a lot of one-goal games.
It could go either way, so we don’t want to
get ahead of ourselves.”
Mike Dion, the coach of St. Mary, adds:
“In a best of three series, if one team starts
to peak at the right time, I believe any of
those eight can come out and do really
really well.”
The four highest ranked teams in each
division that Wilson referred to qualified
for the playoffs, led by his Dwyer outfit in
the Derrick Moore Division and St. Mary
in the Don French Division.
Making up the rest of the playoff pic-
ture is Pickering, Ajax and Holy Trinity as
the second through fourth seeds in the
Moore Division and Austin, Uxbridge and
Pickering slotted in the same spots in the
French Division. The playoff picture was
determined through a crossover format
that sees St. Mary face Holy Trinity, Dwyer
take on Anderson, Austin tangle with Ajax
and Pickering face Uxbridge.
After each pairing plays a short two-
game total point series, the winner of each
will move onto the semifinals, which are
slated to be a best-of-three.
And from there, whoever reaches the
final and advances to the provincials has
as good a chance as anyone to bring home
a title, says Dion, whose team won LOSSA
a year ago and captured bronze at OFSAA.
“Getting out of our loop is very, very
tough. Any team that does has a very good
chance at OFSAA,” Dion explains. “That
usually goes hand-in-hand.”
The final draft of the playoff schedule
wasn’t finalized prior to deadline, how-
ever, it’s expected that St. Mary will open
at Holy Trinity on Monday and Dwyer will
play Game 1 of their set against Anderson
on Tuesday.

Rock midgets moving
on to next level after
moving through minors
AJAX -- The development program the
West Durham Lacrosse Association has
in place is working.
There was no greater measuring stick
for that than the Ontario Lacrosse Asso-
ciation Jr. A draft held on Jan. 29, where
three players from the Rock midget team
were drafted.
John St. John and Kenzie Smith are
likely to be teammates this summer with
the Mississauga Tomahawks, while Tyler
Roche was selected by the St. Catharines
Athletics.
St. John was the first of the trio to be
picked, going in the first round, sixth
overall to the Tomahawks.
An offensive leader, he scored more
than 50 goals last season and finished
third in scoring at the Single-A qualifier
tournament.
The Tomahawks then used their second
round pick, 15th overall, to add Smith to
the roster.
A strong player who can play both ends
of the floor, Smith is a leader who scored
at more than a goal a game clip last sea-
son. Originally from the Uxbridge minor
system, he joined West Durham last sea-
son.
Roche was also a second round pick,
20th overall, by the Athletics.
A strong two-way player, he can score
from close in and also has an intimidat-
ing overhand shot from the outside. He
contributed a point per game last season
in the team’s run to the Ontario Summer
Games.
All three players represented West Dur-
ham at the Midget All-Star game. Joining
them at the annual showcase were goalie
Matthew Law and defenceman Christian
Bentley.
AJAX -- Three members of the West
Durham Rock were selected in the Jr. A
draft. Clockwise from top left are John

Annandale rink
at provincials
JIM EASSON
The Annandale men’s
team of Mark Kean, Chris
Van Huyse, Patrick Janssen
and Tim March are in the
2011 Ontario Provincial Curl-
ing Championship Domin-
ion Tankard taking place in
Grimsby Feb. 7-13.
Annandale member Alex
Bianchi was at the M and
M Meat Shops Canadi-
an Juniors as coach for the
Clancy Grandy rink playing
out of the Kitchener Water-
loo Granite. The team com-
peted in Calgary Jan. 29 to
Feb. 5 and ended with a 5-7
record. Glenn Howard’s son
Scott was vice for Ontario in
the Junior Men’s final where
the team lost to Saskatche-
wan on an extra end last rock
measure.
The next bonspiel on the
Annandale calendar is the
Ladies Cupid, skins for-
mat, to be held on Saturday,
Feb. 12 and the convener,
Lori McMulkin, says they
do have room for a couple
more teams. There will be
one draw. The times will be
9-11 a.m. for the first game
and 1-3 p.m. for the second
game. They are promising
wonderful draw and door
prizes.
Team Glenn Howard is
looking to defend its Ontario
title in Grimsby at the 2011
Ontario Provincial Curling
Championship Dominion
Tankard. They won it last
year and earned a bye direct-
ly into the 11-team round
robin. The Ontario champi-
ons team consists of Glenn
Howard with Pickering resi-
dent Richard Hart at vice,
and Brent Laing and Craig
Savill playing front end.
With a sixth straight Ontar-
io Championship, it is pos-
sible that Scott Howard will
be the fifth man for the team
since winning the Canadian
Junior title would have put
him in Perth, Scotland at the
same time as the London
Brier March 5-13.

BE INFORMED!
CESANA, ITALY -- Canada’s
Helen Upperton and Shelley-
Ann Brown gave their best per-
formance in the final bobsleigh
race of the year by teaming up
to win their first World Cup gold
medal together in Cesana, Italy
on the weekend.
Frustrated by results this
season that have been good,
but not excellent, Calgary’s
Upperton and Pickering’s
Brown made a courageous
decision to take a break from
her medal-winning sled Fer-
nando at the beginning of the
week in hopes of finding more
speed down the track.
But after dating a new sled
in training, Calgary’s Upperton
gave Fernando another shot
and the love affair that has
regularly escorted Upperton to
the winner’s circle throughout
her career, was quickly rekin-
dled setting a new record on
the technical Cesana track at
56.99 in their first run en route
to posting a two-run golden
time of 1:54.21.
It was the third medal of
the season for Upperton and
Brown. The two Canucks also
finished third at both the Cal-
gary and Lake Placid World
Cup stops.
Upperton was equally
thrilled for her Olympic sil-
ver medal-winning brakeman
Brown, who celebrated her
first-ever World Cup victory at
the race.
