PICKERING -- Chad Franklin was just six years
old when his mother felt he needed a new type
of influence in his life.
“He had no male role model really,” said
Deborah Franklin in an interview at their
Pickering home.
The single mother sought the help of Big
Brothers and Big Sisters of Ajax-Pickering.
Since there was a shortage of Big Brothers at
the time, the boy was in a group setting for the
first while and the kids would participate in
group activities such as hiking.
But he met his Big Brother, Scott Baptist,
when he was 10, and the two remain friends
today.
“It’s been a phenomenal experience,” Mr.
Baptist said in an interview. “We taught each
other a lot and have developed a real friend-
ship.”

Council hears from
politicians, residents on
‘most important issue’
KEITH GILLIGAN
kgilligan@durhamregion.com
OSHAWA -- Keeping a united front is nec-
essary in the fight to have Hwy. 407 extend-
ed across Durham Region.
During a special meeting Wednesday,
Oshawa councillors were told to keep push-
ing the provincial government to build the
highway all the way to Hwy. 35/115 in Clar-
ington.
In June, the Province announced it would
only build the 407 to Simcoe Street in
Oshawa. At a meeting in November, Trans-
portation Minister Kathleen Wynne said
the economic downturn meant the Prov-
ince didn’t have the money to complete the
highway.
Resident George Lysyk said, “This is prob-
ably the most important issue for this coun-
cil that you will probably have in this term.
“I think we need to ratchet it up now. I
don’t think citizens understand how much
this will cost us.”
The Region estimates ending the highway
at Simcoe will cost it $255 million in road
work and maintenance, while Oshawa esti-
mates it will cost the City about $74 million.
Regional Chairman Roger Anderson said
the road costs would “literally take all our
money.
“The Region would have to re-evaluate its
whole five-year road program,” he said.
About 2,100 vehicles will be coming off
the highway every hour.
“They’ll be like quick red ants and they’ll
find ways to get around,” he stated.
Mark Little said, “The community I grew
up in and loved basically is taking another
shot in the chin.
“No one really wants half a highway. We
want a full one. We’ve got your back. Don’t
back down.”
More than 100 invitations to the meeting
were sent out, including one to Ms. Wynne,
Oshawa Mayor John Henry said, adding she
couldn’t attend but did send a letter.
Oshawa MP Colin Carrie said the Province
has to live up to the agreement it signed with
the federal government to extend the high-
way across the Region.
“We expect the Province to fulfil their com-
mitment to fund it right through to 35/115,”
Mr. Carrie said. “If one side backs off (on a
commitment) there will be consequences
and that I can tell you for sure.”
Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster said,
“What the Province is proposing to do is
exactly inconsistent with what the Province
said it would do. We’re not asking for any-
thing more than the Province honour the
commitment they made.”
Columbus resident Rosemary McConkey
urged politicians, “Stick to your guns. This
is a commitment that is not being kept. Stay
united. This is a political decision.”

DURHAM -- Police are trying to identify sev-
eral members of a fraud ring suspected of
opening numerous fake accounts at Durham
Region banks.
The suspects, three men and two women,
typically open bank accounts using fraud-
ulent identification and then cash stolen
cheques, police said. They’ve targeted finan-
cial institutions across the GTA including
banks in Oshawa, Courtice and Ajax. One
branch suffered $65,000 in losses, police said.
The ring has been in operation since May of
2010 and has opened an estimated 55 bank
accounts using stolen or fabricated ID. Police
have tracked one suspect to Mississauga,
where he used a debit card to buy groceries.

Recently I decided I was in the market for
an iPhone and decided to ask folks on Twit-
ter what they thought about their cell ser-
vice provider.
In addition to getting feedback from exist-
ing iPhone users, I got a tweet from a Rogers
employee (@RogersMelanie) asking if there
was any information I needed to make the
decision easier.
This sort of quick response from compa-
nies via social media is a major customer
service trend for businesses.
Frank Eliason, formerly of Comcast and
now senior vice-president of social media
for Citigroup in the United States, summed
it up in an interview with socialmediaex-
aminer.com: “There’s a revolution going on
centred around service. Service for the past
20 years has not been what it should in any
industry. Social media is going to change all
that.”
He went on to talk about the different ways
companies would use social media tools.
For example, he compared a Facebook con-
versation to a conversation in a living room
and said it necessitated a softer approach
than Twitter, while forums are more about
peer-to-peer responses and companies
are better off sending a private message in
response to a forum post.
Mr. Eliason pointed out that once contact
was made via social media, a conversation
with a customer could be taken to a chat
window on the company’s website or the
customer service rep could make a phone
call ensuring any private information is
handled appropriately.
Obviously not every customer complaint
or concern can be handled through a quick
tweet or Facebook message, but social
media lends itself to answering quick ques-
tions, leaving customers to happily avoid
call centre waits.
In some cases, a customer service rep can
simply point people to the right page on a
vast corporate website to answer a ques-
tion.
For example, if it’s RRSP time, why not
tweet a bank to ask about interest rates?
Going on a trip? Ask an airline what its
weight limit is for luggage. Bought a new
digital camera? Ask the company what the
best mode is for shooting a kids’ hockey
game.
Going forward, I see consumers check-
ing out social media pages to gauge how
responsive companies are before giving
them their business. If a search reveals a lot
of customer complaints via social media,
then perhaps that’s a company to avoid.
And it’s not just corporations who can
improve their customer service via social
media. The potential for government is
huge. Already several Ontario ministries
are using social media to answer questions
from the public and given how dense gov-
ernment websites are and how tough it can
be to get through on the phone to have a
simple question answered, that’s a good
thing.
With recent trends favouring automation
and outsourcing in customer service, it’s
about time companies started taking a per-
sonal approach and making consumers feel
like their concerns are taken seriously.

Social media to revolutionize customer service
Durham residents
get active to get fit
A group of Durham residents put
their waistlines on the line in a bid to
adopt healthier lifestyles.
It was all part of the Durham Action
Challenge, which just wrapped up with
more than two dozen area residents
receiving prizes for their commitment
and achievement.
The challenge saw residents agree to
get more active and make healthy food
choices while tracking their efforts
for four consecutive weeks. For some,
activity is already a regular part of their
lifestyle and the challenge helped them
keep tabs and make necessary adjust-
ments. Others were motivated by a
need and desire to become more active
and fit.
The Durham Action Challenge for-
malized the notion of getting fit and
becoming more active, but the activi-
ties of people who took part -- walking,
running, working out at the gym, yoga,
team sports -- can be incorporated into
everyone’s schedule.
Any activity -- walking was deemed
the most popular by participants in
the Durham Action Challenge -- is bet-
ter than sitting in front of a television,
or clicking through images and videos
online.
And the benefits of fitness not only
lead to longer, healthier lives, they help
reduce the burden on Ontario’s health-
care system. According to the Durham
Region health department, regular
physical activity can help reduce the
risk of more than 25 chronic conditions
including heart disease, stroke, hyper-
tension, osteoporosis, Type 2 diabetes
and some forms of cancer.
Winners in the Durham Action Chal-
lenge come from every corner of the
region. Like the vast majority of us in
Durham, they live average lives, work
hard at their jobs, raise families and
manage finances. In that context, each
and every one of us can make the effort
to incorporate more fitness activities
and better dietary choices into our
lives.
We are all rewarded with improved
health, greater awareness of our diets
and deeper knowledge of our bodies.
And it doesn’t necessarily require a big
investment of either time or money.
Residents across Durham Region are
encourage to take that first step -- lit-
erally -- towards better health. There
are trails and parks, indoor tracks, even
the local mall where you can start your
journey towards a more fit and healthy
lifestyle. But you have to take that first
proverbial step.

Winners recognized
for physical activity
KEITH GILLIGAN
kgilligan@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- Sweating led to swag
for 30 Durham residents.
Winners in the Durham Action
Challenge received their awards,
including memberships in
municipal recreation centres, on
Tuesday.
The challenge ran from Oct. 1
to Dec. 3 and participants had to
track their physical activity over a
four-week period.
Kellie Flynn, a public health
nurse with Durham, said there
were 233 entries, ranging from
five years to 85 years of age.
“We had comments from peo-
ple that it really motivated them.
That’s great,” Ms. Flynn said.
One of the winners was Jackson
Froude, 11, of Oshawa. Jackson
said he played hockey, “exercised
every day, I ran cross-country and
I played volleyball.”
It was fun because “you’re with
your friends and playing,” he
said.
Janet Veitch of Pickering said, “I
exercise pretty well every day. I’m
running, weight training, dragon
boat paddling.
“I didn’t know about it before.
I’m exercising anyway, so I decid-
ed to make a tally of it,” Ms. Veitch
said, adding she also does yoga.
She runs on the Seaton Trail
often.
“It’s my favourite place.”
During the challenge, to qualify,
children and youth ages five to 17
had to do at least 60 minutes and
up to several hours of moderate
intensity physical activity daily.
Adults 18 and older had to do 150
hours of moderate intensity activ-
ity each week.
Moderate intensity activity
means performing an activity
where breathing is heavier, but
a person is still able to say a few
sentences while active.
Dr. Robert Kyle, the Region’s
medical officer of health, said,
“I’m of an age where physical
activity was a big part of my life. It
still is a big part of my life.
“I feel grateful physical activity
and good eating are a part of my

ing, “It’s no good having a party if
nobody comes.”

All secondary
schools now
have student
representation
MELISSA MANCINI
mmancini@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- More students are
getting involved in their school
councils.
Last year, student trustees were
concerned about the number of
secondary school community
councils without student represen-
tation on them. At the time, 80 per
cent of school councils reported
student representation.
This year, 100 per cent of second-
ary school councils report there is
a student on council, said super-
intendent Janet Edwards, as she
presented the results of the School
Community Council survey to the
board’s standing committee.
The survey was completed by
school community councils in the
fall. It asked administrators to share
information about their coun-
cil. The survey had a 100-per cent
response rate.
“Parent involvement in our
schools is an important compo-
nent,” said Ms. Edwards of school
councils and the survey, which is
sent to them every year.
There was also an increase in the
number of community represen-
tatives on school councils, jump-
ing five per cent from 29 per cent in
the 2009-2010 school year to 34 per
cent this school year, according to
the survey.
The survey covers everything
from how many schools have elec-
tions versus acclamations and
when schools have elections to how
many parents and teaching repre-
sentatives are on councils.
“I remember the day we started
this survey ... over seven years ago,”
said Oshawa Trustee Michael Bar-
rett.
The survey started when some
questions were raised about why
some schools held council elec-
tions and some did not, he said.
“I just wonder if board resources
would be better spent elsewhere,”
he said asking Ms. Edwards what
she thought about the future of the
project.
But Ms. Edwards defended the
survey, saying it provides the board
with perspective of what’s happen-
ing at the school level. She pointed
to the 20-per cent jump in student
participation as something good
that came out of last year’s survey.
“We’ve seen a positive improve-
ment in that area this year,” she
said.
Director of education Martyn
Beckett agreed.
“We find the big picture view of
school community councils to be
worthwhile.”

P
Mr. Franklin, now 22, is thanking
Mr. Baptist along with the organi-
zation and CIBC, which gave him
a large scholarship in 2004, at a
Pickering ceremony Jan. 17.
Mr. Baptist taught Mr. Frank-
lin a number things from proper
manners to the inner workings
of a computer. According to Mr.
Baptist, who wasn’t a father at the
time, Mr. Franklin taught him a lot
about dealing with a child, espe-
cially patience.
They’d often go bowling and
fishing and take spins in an all-
terrain vehicle.
“It made me a better person,”
Mr. Franklin said.
Often, Mr. Franklin would go to
Mr. Baptist’s own family’s place
for celebrations or simply tag
along to watch his soccer games.
Mr. Franklin would often receive a
call from his Big Brother when he
needed help with handiwork such
as building a shed or opening up
the swimming pool.
“He taught him things,” Ms.
Franklin said. “He included him
in a part of his life.”
Being a single mother, Ms.
Franklin would often turn to Mr.
Baptist if she needed him to tackle
an issue with Mr. Franklin that she
wasn’t having luck with.
“He’d listen to Scott more,” Ms.
Franklin laughed.
In 2004, Mr. Franklin success-
fully applied for the CIBC Youth-
vision Scholarship, an annual
bursary associated with the Big
Brothers and Sisters of Canada
and YMCA Canada to help less
fortunate kids in the country with
tuition fees.
Mr. Baptist, along with Mr.
Franklin’s caseworker Monique
Mara, helped Mr. Franklin apply
for the $34,000 bursary by writing
letters on why Mr. Franklin was an
ideal recipient.
“I can say that being a Big Broth-
er has probably been the most
rewarding experience of my life,”
Mr. Baptist said. “It’s the kind of
volunteer work you truly see a
result from. You see a day-to-day
result, you see a long-term result.”
Mr. Franklin graduated from
Centennial College in August in
the robotics and automation pro-
gram and is currently working
part-time while he applies for a
full-time job.
“It’s very rewarding to see him
turn into such a decent person,”
Mr. Baptist said.
Mother and son are both thank-
ful for Big Brothers and Big Sis-
ters.
“It’s great for the community,”
Mr. Franklin said. “It helps turn
lives around that are going the
wrong way, so to speak.”
His mother recommends the
program to single parents, or any-
one who feels their kids need a
positive role model in their lives.
“I’m very thankful for (Big broth-
ers and Big Sisters),” Ms. Franklin
said. “Very, very.”
Mr. Baptist said part of making
a Big Brother and Little Brother
relationship work is good syner-
gy between the mother, the agen-
cy, the Little Brother and the Big
Brother, which was the case in his
experience with Mr. Franklin.

As the winter season drones on, many Ca-
nadians are escaping the cold by jetting off
to tropical destinations. But before you head
south, remember that your home needs extra
protection to prevent against theft and water
damaged while you're away.
“Vacations are an opportunity to relax and
escape our everyday lives,” says Wayne
Ross, insurance expert at Aviva Canada.
“Ensuring your home is protected during
your absence can safe-guard against un-
wanted damage and added costs.”
Ross suggests the following tips to keep
your home protected while vacationing:
• Make a home look occupied when away.
Park a car in the driveway, install an indoor
light timer, place newspaper subscriptions
on hold and ask a neighbour to collect mail.
• Install a security device with a loud alarm
or fl ashing lights. Some alarms can contact
authorities directly when they have been ac-
tivated.
• Use deadbolt locks on all doors. Ensure
doors, including garages and sheds, are
locked and secured. Be sure to remove any
house keys from obvious hiding places, such
as under doormats or fl owerpots.
• Ensure all windows are locked. If your
windows are old, consider upgrading to ones
with improved locking systems.
• Have your walkway shoveled after every
snowfall. Snow removal will make your
home look occupied. If you have a car
parked out front, have a neighbour remove
any snow build-up.
• Turn down the heat to no lower than 55 °F
(13 °C). A low heat seating will prevent your
water pipes from freezing or bursting.
• Have your home checked. Some insurance
policies require that if you are away for more
than a few days, a responsible party must
check your residence daily to ensure an ap-
propriate temperature is maintained to avoid
pipes bursting and serious water damage.
For more information on how to guard your
home during winter vacation and ensure a
stress-free return, contact your insurance
broker or visit www.avivacanada.com.

SPECIAL EVENTS
S ongwriters play Durham
Music festival
Jan. 29 in Whitby
MIKE RUTA
mruta@durhamregion.com
WHITBY -- Ron Beer’s long and
winding road leads to the doors
of Whitby Courthouse Theatre on
Jan. 29.
The local singer/songwriter
has been the driving force in
creating the Songwriters’ Music
Festival, a first-of-its-kind event
featuring Canadian musicians.
“Hopefully, a Durham artist,
aspiring to get themselves out
there, can come to this festival
and get in the national spot-
light,” Beer says.
Several years ago, he was asked
to help with the music program
at a York Region school, where
he thought he would teach stu-
dents how John Lennon and
Paul McCartney wrote their
songs.
Deciding he should do a lit-
tle homework first, Beer went
online and found a Nashville
songwriters’ group which led
him to a Stouffville contact. It
was Don Quarles, who became
executive director of the Song-
writers’ Association of Canada.
Beer proposed a Durham song-
writers’ group and, at the group’s
AGM, he successfully pitched a
music festival and a compilation
CD to unite the regional groups.
As a result, and thanks to a
letter of introduction to other
Canadian mayors from Whitby
Mayor Pat Perkins, Beer made
calls across the country and
organized the Whitby festival.
“This is the first time they’re
all getting together,” Beer says.
He started the Durham group
in June and, when the first loca-
tion closed its doors, the Town
of Whitby gave him use of the
Brock Street Activity Centre for
meetings. He’s also held audi-
tions for the festival there so a
Durham artist, in addition to
himself, can perform on Jan. 29.
“I wanted to provide leader-
ship,” Beer says, when asked
why he got involved.
“I said I would do this for two
years and then pass it on. I’ve
contacted Halifax, Windsor,
Edmonton, Victoria. They all
want to have songwriters’ festi-
vals.”
The Whitby festival roster
includes Windsor’s Peter Boyer,
Joanna Butler of Hali-
fax and Steve Didu-
nyk of Toronto.
Beer says he asked
each regional group
to send one or two
performers each and
two songs for the
CD.
He notes that the
math might not
work out exactly,
as, for example, the
Halifax group is “really strong,”
with 24 regular members, so
four acts from Halifax are com-
ing.
Beer certainly has the creden-
tials to be a part of the event.
A Whitby resident since 1994,
he’s been playing music for
roughly 40 years, ever since
his dad bought him a bass
guitar when he was 12
years old. Beer special-
izes in blues and soul
music and his last
CD, released in 2009,
had a run on Cana-
dian blues charts.
He notes that
he also received
help after attend-
ing his first
Whitby Chamber
o f Commerce meeting.
He sat beside a man, they con-
versed and Beer was offered
help. When the man handed
over his card, it turned out to
be Durham Regional Chairman
Roger Anderson, who got Beer
connected with Durham Tour-
ism manager Kerri King.
The Region is sponsoring a
jingle contest to create a Dur-
ham song and the winner will
perform it at the festival.
Visit the festival website, www.
songwritersmusicfestival.com,
where you can learn more about
the performers and buy tickets
and merchandise.
You can also get tickets at the
Whitby Chamber of Commerce,
128 Brock St. S., and at My Music
Centre, 1121 Dundas St. E.,
Whitby.

The festive but fattening holidays are over
and New Year’s resolutions are still new
enough that there’s still hope of keeping
them. Keep fit while having fun by enjoying
the wealth of winter activities in Durham.
You don’t need special skills or even a lot of
equipment to enjoy these winter workouts.
Walk in the woods - Durham is blessed
with a remarkable network of trails, from
challenging treks on the Oak Ridges
Moraine to short, easy outings you can man-
age with a toddler in tow.

Shores Conservation Area are generally flat
and scenic. Download the Durham Region
Trails Guide for details at www.durhamtour-
ism.ca/travelguides.htm.
Strap on the snowshoes - Snowshoeing is
making a comeback as a recreational sport
thanks to new, lightweight materials, nar-
rower designs and slip-preventing cram-
pons. It’s literally a walk in the park.
Where: Long Sault Conservation Area
offers some 18 kilometres of snowshoe trails
over rolling terrain. Make a getaway week-
end of it at the Brick Church in Manilla, a
bed-and-breakfast in a converted church
in Manilla, handy to ski hills and snowshoe
trails. 705-357-2085, www.thebrickchurch.

who has considered cross-country skiing
but is reluctant to invest in the equipment,
the Ganaraska Forest Centre offers the ideal
opportunity to sample the sport on Jan. 22
when introductory lessons with compli-
mentary equipment rentals are offered, with
registration fee.

snowy hill, there’s a good aerobic workout
towing the toboggan back up the slope.
Where: Check out the slopes at Hy Hope
Farm at 5450 Lakeridge Rd. N. as it climbs
into some of the steepest hills on the Oak
Ridges Moraine. 905-655-4123, www.

NCAA HOCKEY
Maugeri ‘A-OK’ with RIT
Durham Lightning
forward off to D-3
school for hockey
BRAD KELLY
bkelly@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- Christmas is over, but
like a little kid who just can’t
wait for the day to arrive, Maris-
sa Maugeri has her own highly
anticipated date circled on this
year’s calendar.
It will come in the late sum-
mer when she packs her person-
al belongings and her hockey
equipment, and heads off to the
Rochester Institute of Technol-
ogy to become part of the Tigers
hockey program for the next
four years.
“I’m so excited,” she shares. “I
want to leave right now. I just
want to start with new people
and their hockey program is
amazing and I can’t wait to be a
part of that.”
The 17-year-old smooth-
skating forward with the Dur-
ham West Junior Lightning had
thoughts of attending an NCAA
school for hockey as far back as
Grade 4.
“I heard about all the older
girls getting scholarships and
I thought that was the thing to
do,” she recalls.
She played all the way up
through the Durham system,
but left for two seasons in search
of another challenge with the
Toronto Aeros. When she was
released from that program, she
came back to the Lightning this
season. The Ajax resident has
made the most of her opportu-
nity, leading the Lightning in
scoring through 24 games with
12-9-21 point totals, with four
of those goals coming on the
power play to lead the team and
another short-handed. She’s
also fourth on the team in pen-
alty minutes with 26.
While her offensive numbers
are impressive, it’s her work
away from the puck, especially
in the defensive zone, that has
turned Maugeri into a complete
player, says her coach with the
Lightning, Wayne McDonald.
“She’s a real good student of
the game. She is a rink rat,” he
says in complimentary fashion.
“She knows everything about
the game. She’ll do very well.”
Visits to various campuses
began last year for the Grade 12
student at Notre Dame Catholic
Secondary School. After stops
at the University of Connecti-
cut, Clarkson and Niagara, she
chose RIT.
“It was just a good size,” she
says. “I was looking at both big
and small schools and it seemed
to fit right in the middle. It was
close to home and their hockey
program is a top-notch hockey
program.”
At present, RIT is a Division-3
school, but they have applied
for Division-1 status. A four-
year moratorium on schools
moving up or down will be lifted
in August, but getting a hockey
schedule done in time for her
freshman season may be prob-
lematic. It’s more likely, she pre-
dicts, that the school will move
up to Division-1 in time for her
sophomore year of eligibility in
2012-2013.
Maugeri and her Lightning
teammates will be back in action
this weekend when they visit
Stoney Creek on Saturday and
are home to Ottawa on Sunday
at 2:30 p.m. at the Ajax Commu-
nity Centre.
JASON LIEBREGTS / METROLAND
AJAX -- Marissa Maugeri is a 17-year-old forward with the Durham West Junior Lightning. She will be off
to the Rochester Institute of Technology to play hockey in the fall.
COLLEGE SPORTS
Pickering’s Doyle making her point at Humber
Volleyball player
in reach of two
major records
ETOBICOKE -- Humber Hawks
star middle Landis Doyle is on
the brink of breaking two all-
time OCAA women’s volleyball
records, including the presti-
gious all-time points mark.
Doyle, a fifth-year star with the
Hawks and a native of Pickering,
has accomplished almost every-
thing at Humber, and is project-
ed to surpass the current marks
by about the halfway point of
the second half of the season.
After four years, she has won
three OCAA provincial champi-
onships, been named a CCAA
all-Canadian, a two-time CCAA
championship all-star, perenni-
al OCAA all-star and, to top it all
off, the OCAA player of the year.
With Humber sitting perfect
at 11-0 heading into the second
half of the schedule, Doyle and
the Hawks appear primed for
another championship run.
Meanwhile, the records await.
Doyle is currently within strik-
ing distance of the all-time
OCAA scoring record in women’s
volleyball. The current record
holder is former Nipissing Uni-
versity star Megan Stacey with a
total of 1,035 points. Doyle cur-
rently stands at 952, just 84 back
of breaking the record.
Through 11 games, the former
Dunbarton athlete is averag-
ing a shade over 13 points per
contest, and in order to set a
new record, if she plays in all of
Humber’s remaining games, she
would need to average slightly
more than half that total, 7.6 to
be exact.
Should she keep her current
pace up, Doyle would break the
record sometime around game
17 or 18 of the regular season.
The other record within reach
is the all-time mark for aces.
Loyalist’s Mandi Buma holds
the mark, though Doyle sits just
11 back of it, and with her aver-
age of 1.7 per game, she could be
in line to topple Buma around
the same time she takes hold of
the points record.
Humber’s next game is Satur-
day at home to St. Clair.

Junior men win way to final
JIM EASSON
Last week had the Pepsi
Ontario junior curling
championship contest-
ed at the Sarnia Golf and
Curling Club.
The event included the
Annandale junior men’s
team skipped by Michael
Bryson with Wesley For-
get, Sandy Martin and
Danny Dow, along with
coach Susannah Moylan.
The team won its way to
the provincial final game
in which it ended up sec-
ond on the last rock of
the last end. Congratula-
tions to Bryson as he won
the Male Sportsmanship
Award for the event.
Annandale member
Alex Bianchi coached the
Clancy Grandy rink in the
ladies’ junior provincials,
which they won. Playing
out of the Kitchener Water-
loo Granite, Grandy’s
team is made up of Sarah
Wilkes, Laura Crocker and
Lynn Kreviazuk. The team,
including coach Bianchi,
now advances to the M
and M Meat Shops Cana-
dian juniors slated for Cal-
gary Jan. 29 to Feb. 5.
The 116th running of
the TCA bonspiel, now
called the Goldline, runs
across Toronto Jan. 8-15.
In this ‘spiel, two games
are played on the first Sat-
urday, then Monday it is
win or you are out, and
that scenario continues all
week. Annandale had five
teams competing, four in
the senior’s draw for 50
and above. Entered were
skips Dale Patterson, Wil
MacFadyen, David Gau-
dette and David Lloyd.
David Furdas was skip
of a team in the open
event. Some of the week-
long curling was slated at
Annandale on the Monday
and Wednesday evenings.
Next on the Annandale
Curling Club bonspiel list
is the Robbie Burns Mixed
Funspiel for Saturday,
Jan. 22. It advertises two
six-end games of curling,
lunch followed by off-ice
games, dinner, dance and
prizes.
The road to the Tim Hor-
tons Brier started with
the zone playdowns ear-
lier in December, then the
regional in Uxbridge Jan.
8-9. An Annandale team
skipped by Mark Kean,
with Chris Van Huyse,
Patrick Janssen and Tim
March won the B side of
the regional. The team will
proceed to the 2011 pro-
vincial curling champion-
ship Dominion Tankard
to take place in Grimsby
from Feb. 7–13.
Team Glenn Howard will
be looking to defend its
Ontario title there. It won
last year and gets a bye
directly into the cham-
pionship. This Ontario
champions team consists
of Glenn Howard with
Pickering resident Richard
Hart at vice, Brent Laing
and Craig Savill playing
front end.
The next competition
for them is the BDO Cana-
dian Open scheduled for
the GM Centre in Oshawa
from Jan. 26-30.
