PICKERING -- It wouldn’t be too surprising
if Pickering residents have spotted local artist
Hugh Wilson hanging around garbage dump-
sters lately.
The East Shore area television producer and
part-time artist has been looking for a unique
canvas that can be found in just about any
home for his latest encaustic art pieces.
“The art form itself is kind of pure and
organic and taking it to the next level of green,
I thought ‘there’s got to be something I can
do,’” he said. “I kept thinking ‘there’s got to be
something out there that we’re throwing out,’
and then I saw a door.”
Encaustic painting is an ancient technique
that’s increased in popularity over the past few
decades.
“It’s all beeswax,” said the local artist.
Mr. Wilson uses local beeswax and adds in
oil paints or a powdered pigment to give it
colour. It dries quickly, and results in a layered
and thick-textured piece.
