WARD LOOKS AT AJAX-PICKERING HOSPITAL LONG-TERM
BY KRISTEN CALIS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- A husband, father of three young kids
and managing director for a real estate invest-
ment and management company has just
added another big responsibility to his list.
Ajax resident Jim Ward is now in charge of
overseeing fundraising for the hospital, and
he’s happy to do it.
“I’m kind of more excited than nervous,” he
said from his Ajax home.
Besides, he’s a long-time supporter of both
the Rouge Valley Health System’s hospitals,
Ajax-Pickering and Centenary, since he grew
up in both communities.
“This is our cause,” he said. “We donate to
the hospital each year.”
He was recently named chairman of the
Rouge Valley Health System Foundation after
outgoing chairman John Wiersma stepped
down due to a move out of the area.
Mr. Ward has sat on the foundation’s board
of directors for a number of years, and became
vice chairman in 2007.
He explained he chooses the hospital as
his charity of choice because, while there
are many other worthy causes in the area,

OSHAWA -- A 42-year-old Ajax woman was
airlifted to Sunnybrook hospital Thursday
morning after firefighters used the jaws of life
to free her from her vehicle after a crash at an
Oshawa intersection.
The woman’s black Nissan had flipped on
the driver’s side in the two-vehicle accident at
Mary Street and Rossland Road just after 11
a.m. Oshawa firefighters cut the roof off the
small SUV to free the trapped woman.
The woman was moved from the car onto
a stretcher and placed in an ambulance as
emergency crews waited for an air ambu-
lance to land in the yard of nearby Dr. S.J.
Phillips Public School.
The other driver, a 71-year-old Oshawa
woman, was taken to Lakeridge Health
Oshawa and treated for minor injuries.
Police said they have ruled out road condi-
tions as the cause of the accident. The investi-
gation continues.

MP Mark Holland
hopes for federal
heritage designation
BY KRISTEN CALIS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- The Greenwood
library is about to experience a big
birthday and Ajax-Pickering MP
Mark Holland knows the perfect
present.
“For the 150th anniversary of the
building, it would be a great oppor-
tunity to get the house federally
designated and recognized,” he said
in an interview.
During the Jan. 30 opening of the
Durham West Arts Centre, current-
ly based in the Greenwood library,
Mr. Holland announced that he’ll
be initiating the process to desig-
nate the building as a national his-
toric site of Canada. The designa-
tion proposal will be based on the
building’s age, architectural and
local historical significance and its
connections with prominent Cana-
dians.
The Greenwood library, histori-
cally known as the Greenwood
schoolhouse, is a great example of
a Victorian-style one-room school-
house, Mr. Holland said. The build-
ing was originally a schoolhouse
where some prominent Canadi-
ans, such as former Prime Minister
John Diefenbaker, were educated.
Mr. Diefenbaker’s father also taught
there. “This is a great school that a
lot of great Canadians have gone
through,” Mr. Holland said. “It’s a
staple of our history.”
Mr. Diefenbaker even returned
to the school after moving from the
area and often spoke highly of the
building’s significance.
A federal designation of the build-
ing would make it almost impos-
sible to destroy and make its main-
tenance imperative, Mr. Holland
said.
Mr. Holland is a former Green-
wood resident, having spent 10
years living in the hamlet.
“It’s very close to me personally,”
he said. “The building has become
a building of the community.”
In 2008, the library was forced
to shut down for about a year due
to a defunct furnace and a ruined
foundation. After a long debate on
whether it was worthwhile to re-
open the library doors since circula-
tion numbers were down, Pickering
council approved $50,000 for the
repairs. The doors re-opened last
January and library officials have
reported a rise in the library’s usage.
In October, the former schoolhouse
was granted provincial historic des-
ignation for its historical and archi-
tectural value and interest.
Although there isn’t yet an offi-
cial date for the celebration of the
library’s 150th anniversary, Mr. Hol-
land would like to have the federal
designation in place by then.
Canadian historic designations
are ultimately made by the federal
minister of the environment.

in the area of St. Catherine of Siena ele-

Trustees provided no objection to the

tain 451 single detached homes and 22

Students destined to the Catholic board
from the subdivision would be bused to
St. Catherine, which had 459 students as
of November 2009 and a rated capacity of

P
To make a difference you must stick with it for the long haul
Nothing comes
easy in politics
If you really want to make a difference at
the municipal or regional council level
you can -- but it isn’t easy.
Residents can have an impact at
City Hall, but it takes determination,
patience, hard work and a stick-tuitive-
ness that borders on obsession.
Consider Oshawa resident Larry Ladd.
The retired CAW member is passion-
ate about the Oshawa waterfront to the
point where he hasn’t missed more than
three Oshawa council meetings in eight
years. That’s probably a better atten-
dance record than any member of coun-
cil can claim. He has voluminous files
and records on the waterfront issue and
is an absolute fountain of knowledge on
all things relating to the Oshawa har-
bour and the Oshawa marina. He has
spoken many times at Oshawa council
and has lobbied the federal government
on behalf of marina users. And he has
made it clear he is not going away any
time soon.
That’s the real key to making a differ-
ence. Barry Bracken, of Port Perry, is
another example. Like Mr. Ladd, he has
taken up a cause, but in Mr. Bracken’s
case, it is the energy-from-waste facil-
ity being built in Courtice. Mr. Bracken
has attended countless meetings over
the last three years and, with daughter
Wendy, has spoken intelligently about
the pitfalls of incineration. He states,
with conviction, his worries about the
incineration process.
For Rosemary McConkey, of Colum-
bus, concerns about the neglect of her
hamlet by Oshawa drive her involve-
ment. She wants recognition and feels
ignored by City Hall so she makes it her
business to get council’s attention.
Mary Delaney, of Pickering, has had
the longest stretch of making a differ-
ence. From People or Planes to Land over
Landings, her battle to keep Pickering
airport-free has lasted for decades and
will, presumably, continue for decades.
All four of the people who really make
a difference in our communities work
very hard at it.
It is a way of life for them, much more
than merely a hobby.
They spend a lot of time pushing to get
what they want, believe what they are
doing is right for the community and
will not stop until they see their vision
through to the end.
To make a difference, you have to be
willing to be in it for the long haul. Noth-
ing really changes overnight.
When it comes to the world of politics,
the tortoise almost always wins the race
over the hare.

Government needs
an unsubscribe option
for junk mail
To the editor:
Today, I found in my mailbox anoth-
er propaganda piece sent out regular-
ly by the Conservative government. You
know -- those cheap black-and-white fly-
ers with some pat-on-the-back commen-
tary about what the government is doing
for we fine people of Canada. Instead of
simply chucking the piece, I decided to
see who was sending me this gem. I went
online to search the member’s name and,
lo and behold, it is the MP for Delta, BC.
Where is Delta, BC, may I ask? And why is
he sending his flyers to Ajax, ON (assuming
he papered the whole neighbourhood)?
I could send this flyer back to Ottawa, no
postage required, but no one’s there, and
why waste the post office’s time and effort?
I sent an e-mail to the honourable MP but
with him being off work for another six
weeks, who knows when and if he’ll get to
his mail. The CMA will nicely ask compa-
nies to not send me junk and most com-
panies have an unsubscribe program. We
need one for the government, too.

CASINO CASH
Ajax doesn’t owe the
Region a penny more
To the editor:
It was just a matter of time before jolly
Roger Anderson gathered his regular
benefactors at Durham Region to see if
they could pull off a heist on our casino.
We already donated a perfectly good
bus service plus ancillary buildings to
the Region. They have now returned rat-
tling their tin cups.
Here’s a suggestion for our regional
councillors and all the other folks in Dur-
ham who have already had a chance to
agree on this - Mr. Anderson and friends
must re-visit officially the question of
an elected Regional chairman, plus fair
representation for Ajax, and maybe Ajax
council might review the situation.
I also note that some of our region-
al folks want a more stringent check
of prospective councillors in case they
have broken any laws. That makes even
more sense to have a chairman elected
at large. He or she can then be equally
interrogated.
Personally I think the members of
council who are looking for a handout
should take care that Ajax does not make
a charge to them for all the extra tour-
ists/visitors we attract to our little gold-
mine on the lake.
Stick to your guns Steve, not a penny
more.

To the editor:
To the man who wrote the letter regard-
ing the Highway of Heroes being used for

soldiers who die in Afghanistan, shame on
you.
Our police officers, RCMP and firemen
are all heroes.
The Highway of Heroes should be used

DURHAM -- The union representing colleges has
pushed back its strike deadline from Feb. 11 to Feb.
17.
The decision comes in light of a Feb. 10 ratification
vote initiated by the colleges, which allows faculty to
decide on management’s final offer.
The Ontario Public Service Employees’ Union strike
deadline change is intended to avert a strike, said
Debbie Rautins, president of Durham College local.
“If the offer is not ratified, they can go back to the
table,” Ms. Rautins said.
But management will not be going back to the table
if that’s the case, said Ken Robb, Durham College’s
vice-president of human resources.
The offer going to vote is the maximum manage-
ment can give, he said, adding the colleges won’t
agree to binding arbitration either.
Management is currently offering a three-year deal
with a 1.75-per cent increase in the first year, two per
cent for the last two and some other improvements.
In January, 57 per cent of Ontario college faculty
voted in favour of a strike -- 56 per cent at Durham
College. “I think (the ratification vote outcome) is
going to be close again and I believe Durham College
will reject the offer,” Ms. Rautins said.
As of September 2008, the minimum salary for full-
time professors, librarians, and counsellors affected by
the contract was $55,683 and the maximum $96,529.
Management’s proposal would bring the
salaries to $58,946 and $102,186 by the end of
the contract’s term, while the union’s propos-
al would see it bumped a bit higher to $59,965
and $103,951.
According to the OPSEU, issues of conten-
tion surround workload and academic free-
dom.
Given the close outcome of the strike vote,
Ms. Rautins is not concerned about backlash
from within if the group takes to the picket
lines, although she added she won’t deny it
could create some animosity.
“I think it’s up to the leadership to set the
example for understanding and tolerance to
everyone’s views,” Ms. Rautins said.
A new strike protocol in the works will pres-
ent some different options for picketing and
should help to alleviate some of the concerns
by faculty, she added.
