PICKERING -- Dr. Sam Martin is the senior pastor at Safe Haven Worship Centre and is the founder of the Arms of Jesus Children’s Fund, with
an office in Jacmel, Haiti. Dr. Martin’s friends in Haiti are mostly safe, but are homeless following the earthquake.Pickering pastor a rock amid Haiti rubble

PICKERING -- Food and water distribution start-
ed in a couple of Haitian towns that were badly
damaged by the earthquake Jan. 12, thanks to a
charitable organization founded in Pickering.
“Then hopefully we’ll get the houses recon-
structed,” said Dr. Sam Martin, head pastor of the
Safe Haven Worship Centre in Pickering and the
founder of the Arms of Jesus Children’s Mission
Inc.
The Arms of Jesus provides education and
nutrition to the children of Cap Rouge, located in
the mountainous area to the southwest of Port-
au-Prince. It is the community’s only non-gov-
ernmental organization.
The head office is located in Jacmel, which is on
the southern coast of Haiti, and Dr. Martin was
pleased to hear Canadian troops have touched
down there. Aid has been difficult to move into
Jacmel since the road into the port town has
been cut off from the rest of the country since the
earthquake.

put over to Feb. 3

OSHAWA -- The man accused of murder-
ing two-and-a-half year old Keagan Davis
uttered not a word publicly as he appeared
briefly in court Wednesday.
Michael Monckton, 26, appeared from
Lindsay jail, where he is being held, in
Oshawa court. Clad in an orange prison-
issued jumpsuit, Mr. Monckton had the
opportunity to speak privately with his
lawyer, Gary McNeely, before the matter
was held over until Feb. 3.
Mr. Monckton is charged with second-
degree murder in the death of toddler Kea-
gan. The child was found dead in a base-
ment apartment on Southgate Drive by
Durham Regional Police officers respond-
ing to an emergency call on Jan. 5.
An autopsy found the boy died of trau-
ma.
When the Oshawa man appeared in
court last week, his lawyer indicated con-
cern his client was something of a “target”
in jail, and was being subjected to verbal
abuse by guards and fellow inmates.
But Mr. Monckton is “doing better,” Mr.
McNeely said Wednesday.
That’s at least partly due to “acclimatiza-
tion,” the lawyer said. “He’s getting used to
being there, and others are getting used to
him being there.”
As yet, Mr. Monckton has not sought bail.
That will only happen after the Crown pro-
vides disclosure of evidence.
“I can’t bring bail until I get all the dis-
closure,” Mr. McNeely said.

Event held in honour of
12-year-old local girl
being treated at the
hospital
BY REKA SZEKELY
rszekely@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- Dance crews from across the GTA
will be throwing down in Pickering Village to
support an Ajax dancer being treated for can-
cer.
On Jan. 29, the crews will perform at
Pickering High School at a fundraiser in hon-
our of 12-year-old Jessica Theocharides, of
Ajax, currently being treated at SickKids for
leukemia.
“Basically we just wanted to have a show
where we can support SickKids because
they’ve been tremendous to Jess and her fam-
ily,” said family friend and one of the organiz-
ers of the event, Pauline Yuen.
The idea for the event came from a group
of girls in their late teens who attended the
same Pickering dance studio as Jessica.
“She always would support the older girls
and the older girls would support her group,”
said Ms. Yuen. “They actually named their
crew the JT Crew for Jess.”
Called Steppin Up, the fundraiser will also
include video shout-outs.
Proceeds from the event will go towards
Marnie’s lounge at the Hospital for Sick Chil-
dren in Toronto.
“It’s a place where all the kids, during their
extended stay in the hospital, they can go
hang out with other kids, play video games,
play on the computer,” said Ms. Yuen, add-
ing it’s a place where they can feel like normal
kids.
This isn’t the first time a group has raised
funds on behalf of Jessica. Last October, stu-
dents at Jessica’s elementary school, St. Pat-
rick in Ajax, raised $2,600 for research at Sick-
Kids through an orange day where students
wore orange clothes and hair extensions.
Doors for the Steppin Up show open at 7
p.m. on Jan. 29 and tickets are $10 in advance
and $15 at the door. For advance tickets, e-
mail steppinup@live.ca and Ms. Yuen said
that’s the best option for grabbing them.
“We’re not sure if we’re going to have any at
the door because it’s selling out pretty quick-
ly,” she said.
Pickering High School is at 180 Church St.
N. in Ajax.

Repatriation services
planned for Friday
afternoon
BOWMANVILLE -- As the bodies of two
RCMP officers killed in Haiti travel the
Highway of Heroes Friday, Cecile Bowers
will be watching and she hopes she’s not
alone.
Ms. Bowers, a member of the Canadi-
an Army Vets Motorcycle Unit and the
Bowmanville Legion, intends to hon-
our the RCMP officers the same way she
has Canada’s fallen soldiers: by holding
her Canadian flag on the Waverley Road
Hwy. 401 overpass in Bowmanville. She is
encouraging others to do the same.
“They serve just as our soldiers serve,”
Ms. Bowers said. “I respect what they do,
that’s why I’m there.”
A repatriation motorcade for the officers
is expected to pass through Bowmanville
around 3:30 p.m., according to the RCMP.
People can call 905-697-6000 to confirm
the time.
To drum up support and awareness
about the repatriation ceremony for the
police officers, Ms. Bowers has contacted
her local members of parliament, Durham
Regional Police, and others, she said.
Ms. Bowers would like to see people lin-
ing all the overpasses to show their sup-
port, she said.

Oda was to be in Haiti
this week on ministerial
business
BY JENNIFER STONE
jstone@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- Bev Oda was to have been in
Haiti this week.
The Durham MP has been to the island
nation twice since taking on the role of Min-
ister of International Cooperation in 2007,
and had another trip planned.
“I was to be there yesterday and the day
before to announce Canada will be building
a new hospital in the area hit by four hurri-
canes in 2008,” Ms. Oda said Tuesday.
But, with Jan. 12’s 7.0-magnitude earth-
quake, her plans changed, and Ms. Oda
remained in Ottawa, where she announced
$80 million in humanitarian relief for Haiti.
“I can be more effective here in Ottawa,
making sure we’re responding,” Ms. Oda
said, noting Canada has had a long relation-
ship with Haiti, and is the second largest
donor nation doing work there.
Right now, one of the most pressing issues
in Haiti is getting international aid into the
country. The small airport near Port Au
Prince is handling 100 landings a day, Ms.
Oda said. Many are attempting to land in
neighbouring Dominican Republic with the
supplies and relief workers making the trip
into Haiti over land.
Given the issues in transportation, Ms.
Oda said it’s better she stay in Canada for
now.
“If one seat can carry three cartons of
water or another doctor, I’d rather that seat
go to them,” she said.
The federal government has offered to
match financial contributions from Cana-
dians to registered charities specifically ear-
marked for response to the earthquake. But
Ms. Oda cautions people to ensure the char-
ity is registered.
That can be done by visiting www.cra-arc.
gc.ca/whtsnw/tms/rthqk-haiti-eng.html.
Given transportation issues, monetary
donations are the best bet, Ms. Oda said.
“I encourage people to understand that
if you want to contribute, the donation of
money is the best way,” she said.
Haiti has long been a top priority for the
Canadian International Development Agen-
cy, for which Ms. Oda is responsible, and
will continue to be, she said.
“Canada has been in Haiti a long time and
will be in Haiti to rebuild it better than ever,”
she said.

Provincial help required
to address blunders
by Durham Region
To the editor:
Re: Province orders Durham to encrypt
data, Jan. 14.
Kudos to the Province of Ontario for
finally stepping in and providing some
much-needed guidance to the floundering
ship that is Durham Region’s Department
of Health.
This may seem a rather severe wrap on
the knuckles for its captain, Dr. Robert
Kyle, the Region’s chief medical officer, but
in my opinion it had to be done.
I don’t often agree with Regional Chair-
man Roger Anderson, but in this case he
hit the nail squarely on the head with his
statement: “Numerous errors by numer-
ous people resulted in this problem.”
I was one of the 83,524 recipients of Dr.
Kyle’s letter of apology for his department’s
loss of our personal health information
and feel this simple apology falls well short
of any sort of atonement for the severity of
this latest blunder.
And, speaking of blunders, was it not Dr.
Kyle’s somewhat ambiguous statement,
made last summer, that the Region’s pro-
posed garbage incinerator would pose an
“acceptable risk” to the health of those citi-
zens living in the affected area.
I have to ask, “acceptable to who?”
Apparently this statement paved the
way for Regional council to push forward
with the submission of an Environmental
Assessment (EA) report to the Province,
seeking approval of the proposed incinera-
tor.
After receiving hundreds of submissions
from the public citing errors, omissions and
complaints about this report and numer-
ous requests from the Region to extend the
timeline so they could make corrections
and resubmissions of the “amended” EA,
I’m hoping the Province can once again
come to the rescue of the citizens of Dur-
ham and force the Region to cancel such
an ill-conceived project.

Questions not answered
on missing health info
To the editor:
Re: Durham still looking for missing health
information, Jan. 7.
In a letter to Dr. Robert Kyle, Commis-
sioner and Medical Officer of Health, I told
him his letter was a waste of taxpayer money
because it told me nothing I didn’t already
learn from the media; and that it offered me
no advice except to get a new health card.
Today I received a letter from the administra-
tion director saying they have still not found
the key ; the incident has been reported to
all the proper authorities and they are coop-
erating fully. Neither letter has told me what
I want to know: Who lost that USB key? How
have they been reprimanded? Do they still
have their job for which we, as taxpayers, foot
the bill? What exactly is being done to find it?
Why wasn’t the information encrypted? And
how do they plan to compensate the more
than 80,000 people whose identity has been
compromised?

Generous Americans
deserve our thanks
To the editor:
To all those people who like to bash Amer-
icans for being ignorant and inconsiderate, I
hope you might change your tune. Did you
know that they sent an aircraft carrier, hos-
pital ship, soldiers, doctors, nurses, and $100
million of relief to Haiti?
How much support did China and Rus-
sia send? So next time you want to put down
America just be thankful they are our neigh-
bours and remember that whenever a natural
disaster occurs anywhere in the world they
provide the most in aid and support.

City smart to keep Pickering bicentennial costs in line
The opportunity to celebrate a bicen-
tennial is a special time, but given the
economic difficulties faced by many in
the community, the City is right to take a
modest approach.
Pickering officially turns 200 on March
4, 2011, so there is plenty of lead time to
get the bicentennial year just right.
On Monday, the City decided to budget
$43,000 to beef up existing events and
add new ones.
But the extra events planned won’t go
through unless the City can find spon-
sorships or grants to pay for them.
That’s smart thinking on council’s part
as tax dollars are needed to pay for local
essentials and any increase must go to
bread, not circuses.
The occasion of a 200th birthday cele-
bration should generate some sponsor-
ship opportunities and, with plenty of
lead time, some grant money should be
available from Queen’s Park and Ottawa.
One of the biggest and brightest hap-
penings should take place on July 1, 2011,
when the City is planning to have a huge
Canada Day celebration.
The $25,000 event will only go ahead
should grants come through, but the City
is hoping to have a Canadian headlin-
er and a swearing-in ceremony for new
Canadians.
Much of the cash is needed for brand-
ing and marketing purposes over the
next year.
The City will be looking to work with
local groups, such as putting on a speaker
series with the Pickering Public Library,
a soccer tournament with the Pickering
Soccer Club and an Italian heritage mul-
ticultural and sporting event to be orga-
nized by the Ajax-Pickering Italian Social
Club.
All are great ideas as they involve com-
munity-minded local citizens who will
be more than happy to spread the word
about Pickering’s big birthday celebra-
tion.
The City should do all it can to bring as
many clubs and organizations into the
big party tent so that a large number of
Pickering citizens are directly involved.
Not only does it make for a bigger party,
it helps to build community spirit, some-
thing you can never have enough of.
The usual events that fill the City cal-
endar, like Family Day, Christmas in the
Village, the New Year’s Eve Family Count-

Used children’s
shoes urgently
needed
BY STEFANIE SWINSON
sswinson@durhamregion.com
OSHAWA -- Michael Kane has
been keeping busy over the past
few work days.
The delivery truck driver for
Softmoc has been driving all
over the GTA picking up boxes
of used shoes and delivering
them to the company’s ware-
house in Whitby, for transport
to Haiti.
“I just brought back four skids
yesterday back to the ware-
house. It’s quite a lot,” he said
while carting another 200 pairs
of shoes onto the truck, outside
the Oshawa Centre.
Softmoc shoe stores across
Canada launched their used
shoe campaign on Friday.
They’re asking people to take
in their gently used shoes so
they can be sent to Haiti to help
those affected by the 7.0 magni-
tude earthquake.
The company is working
alongside the charity Soles 4
Souls to get the shoes delivered
to Port-au-Prince.
“The response has been over-
whelming,” Oshawa Softmoc
store manager Deborah Watt
McMillan said.
“We’ve had ... just since Fri-
day, over 200 pairs donated
from the community, which is a
really great turnout. We were all
pleasantly surprised.”
May Howie took time out of
her work day Tuesday to donate
to the cause. She dropped off a
pair of her old running shoes.
“I’m a runner and I always
have shoes around. I thought,
why not? It’s such a good cause,”
she said.
Ms. Watt McMillan said the
last day for donations is Jan. 22
because the company would
like to make sure the shoes get
to Haiti as quickly as possible.
“Everybody kind of has a little
bit of a footwear fetish and has
some extra shoes in their clos-
et that they’re not using so any-
thing they can bring in would
be appreciated.”
She said they’re in desperate
need of children’s shoes and
sandals right now.
There are three Softmoc loca-
tions in Durham Region -- at the
Oshawa Centre, the Pickering
Town Centre and the Whitby
Softmoc warehouse on Hopkins
Street South.

P
said having Dr. Martin’s team, with their famil-
iarity of the land and language there, will be a
huge help for the troops.
“They’re pathfinders, they know the area
very well,” he said.
And he gives Dr. Martin much praise for
being a constant help to Haiti, an island that
has dealt with numerous blows over the
years.
“He’s been at the forefront of doing a lot of
the work behind the scenes,” he said.
Right now, both Jacmel and Cap Rouge are a
mess. Dr. Martin is thankful the director of the
Arms of Jesus in Haiti is fine, but he’s shaken
up since everything has been flattened.
“The homes for the children were bad to
start with so they’re all ruined,” he said.
The school, however, managed to survive.
And last year, the Arms of Jesus provided
around 100 solar-paneled lights to the com-
munity that has no electricity, along with
solar-powered Bibles they can read in the
dark.
“They’re still working,” he was glad to
report.
Dr. Martin added the children and staff
members are accounted for, but he’s still feel-
ing the loss of others.
“People, our staff are all well enough, but
one of our board members in Jacmel has lost
his wife and his 16-day-old baby,” Dr. Martin
said.
He was also saddened to report a Pickering
woman and Safe Haven member died in the
earthquake.
“I can’t release the family name but we have
lost a member, so it’s been tough,” he said.
The Arms of Jesus continues to col-
lect donations and will be at the forefront
of getting Cap Rouge and Jacmel back on
their feet.
In an effort to keep costs down, the Arms of
Jesus doesn’t have an online donation func-
tion, but accepts cheques by mail or in per-
son at Safe Haven. The federal government
will match the donations.
Cheques can be mailed to: P.O. Box 10,
Pickering, Ontario, Canada L1V 2R2

Unit 23, Pickering.

Six-storey, 135-unit
residence a go,
despite objections
BY KRISTEN CALIS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Council on Monday
approved plans for a six-storey retirement
residence on Glengrove and Kingston
roads, despite resident requests to send
the plans back to staff for further work.
V!VA Retirement Corp. requested a zon-
ing bylaw amendment
to remove two empty
homes on the prop-
erty and to build a
135-unit rental retire-
ment residence and a
day care with 25 spots.
V!VA plans to hire
between 40 and 60
employees in total.
“I’m really excited
about having the day
care integrated with
the seniors compo-
nent,” Mayor Dave
Ryan said, adding it will be beneficial to
both the seniors and the children.
Council felt V!VA worked openly with
staff and residents and were sensitive
toward their issues. One resident had con-
cerns of the interference the building could
have with his amateur radio station opera-
tion and satellite reception. Rob Freeman,
V!VA’s planner, said at the meeting the
company has put in writing it will accom-
modate his concerns and those of any oth-
ers with similar issues.
Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson
said he was apprehensive of the plans at
first. But in the summer, V!VA held a well-
attended public meeting and he could see
the developer would address their con-
cerns.
“It’s very important to have the commu-
nity involved,” he said.
Resident Peter Smith said the plans
should go back to staff for further work.
While not against a retirement residence,
he felt the height isn’t suitable for the
neighbourhood, and feared more of the
same will follow.
Director of planning and development
Neil Carroll said V!VA represents the
northern limit of high-density on Glen-
grove Road, and he wouldn’t support any
applications for dense buildings north of
it.
Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles
said he’d hate for the plans to go to the
Ontario Municipal Board if council reject-
ed the application. They’d then be subject
to changes over which the City has no con-
trol.
Mr. Carroll said the area is designated
mixed-corridor use and if it did go to the
OMB, the property could be subject to
even more commercial possibilities.
“It’s probably one of the most broad des-
ignations in our official plan,” Mr. Carroll
said.
Coun. Johnson asked Mr. Freeman if the
plans were referred back to staff, wheth-
er VIVA would take the application to the
OMB.
“I’m not sure we could achieve much
more than we already have, quite frankly,”
he said.

Ever struggled with keeping a New Year’s
Resolution? Most of us have. The wonderful
news is that there are ways to make keeping
them easier. Your mind is so powerful so why
not connect with that power? Get your subcon-
scious mind working for you.
Hypnosis, which is really just relaxed, fo-
cused concentration, is a natural ability. It’s
entirely normal and something we all do every
day. When we are hypnotized, our bodies are re-
laxed and our minds are focused. For example,
have you ever been reading or watching TV and
someone called you and you didn’t hear them?
You were hypnotized. Ever been driving, got
to your destination and didn’t remember part
of the drive, you were in hypnosis – focused
concentration on driving. It’s also called a light
trance.
When we’re hypnotized we’re able to access
our subconscious mind. This allows us to cre-
ate positive changes – quit smoking, let go of
weight, relax, whatever change we’ve decided
to make in our lives.
Self-hypnosis is easy to learn – either in group
sessions or one-on-one. So harness your natural
ability. Learn to change your thoughts, habits,
beliefs and become the person you want to be!
Written by Phebe-Jane Poole, Ph.D. Phebe

people can enhance their lives, at the Isle of Ava-
lon Wellness Centre. Working with individuals
and groups, Phebe helps people make positive
life changes, reduce everyday stress, become
more self-aware, fi nd a sense of overall balance
and peace, and have a renewed energy for life.
Enhance Your New
Year ʼs Resolutions!
One thing we want to have with us into our golden years
is our health. 2010 is going to be the year for many to de-
cide to make health a personal project. Being guided one
step at a time toward optimal health is the pathway to your
Ultimate Personal Evolution, and it can be an exhilarating
process. Many people have achieved a transformation to
health, have you? In the end, each one of us is responsible
for our own health, and most often disease.
Regardless of what is going on in our lives, health
should not be taken for granted, and whatever is holding
you back from optimal living can make you a prisoner
of mediocrity of our thoughts and activities. It is impor-
tant that we not ignore the awareness of body signs and
symptoms. If you have shied away from a patient-cen-
tered health clinic then you are depriving yourself of a
great personal learning experience. There you can have
your personal plan created for optimizing your health and
lifestyle < you are the focus!
Expect to be supported and encouraged through this
health transformation, and get excited about making
progress. Lead with your positive attitude and you have
taken the fi rst step. You should be will-
ing and prepared to look deep into your health history,
attitude, lifestyle, sleep habits, foods and eating habits,
nutritional supplements, and exercise. Best results are
usually found with tailored recommendations given one
on one to have accountability, measure, track, and record
your progress. Once people are given the tools for suc-
cess, they are able to “hit the ground running,” and put the
wheels in motion. The steps towards health include your
own personal health assessment, food sensitivity testing
and cellular analysis (to establish your baseline), cleans-
ing/detoxifi cation (this is a different process for each in-
dividual), dietary improvements and recommendations,
as well as maintenance. It is all about you, and the time is
now. Time to get out of your own way and allow nature to
take its course with you. There is no greater reward than
living the best life and feeling great. Go for it!

Control Clinic in Pickering and Bowmanville for the past

Question:
I’ve been working out religiously four
times a week for over four months and
I haven’t lost any weight, what am I
doing wrong?
Answer:
Many of my clients are surprised to
learn that exercise is only part of the
puzzle.
There are two main reasons why
many people work out consistently
and yet still are not able to reach their
health and weight loss goals. The
fi rst is that you need to adjust your
workout program every four to six
weeks in order to keep your body
challenged and the second and most
important key ingredient to success is
nutrition.
Our body is extremely intelligent
and learns to adapt very quickly,
this is why we provide our clients
at U Weight Loss with professional
workout programs. You must
constantly change your work out
regime to challenge your body in
order to see the results you crave.
It is also a huge nutrition myth that if
you work out, you can eat whatever
you want. The truth is that 75-80%
of the results you will experience
from any exercise program are in
fact dependent on your nutrition.
You need to fuel your body properly
with the right nutrients emphasizing
the correct balance of lean proteins,
essential fats and low-glycemic
carbohydrates to repair muscle tissue
in order to tone, build muscle and
increase your metabolism.
Nutrition is the cornerstone of health
and the focus at U Weight Loss.
Come in to U Weight Loss in Ajax or
Pickering and learn how to accelerate
the results from your exercise
program and reach your health and
weight loss goal easily and quickly!
