Drumming up funds for cancer
PICKERING BOY, 7, PLAYS THE SKINS AT BIG M BURGERS

PICKERING -- When family friends joked
that Darius Parsons could play the drums so
well that he should play on the street to see
how much money he could make, the seven
year old liked the sound of it.
His parents, Nikki and Greg Parsons, how-
ever, said it would have to be for a charity.
“I wanted to raise money for cancer
because my grandma and grandad both died
from cancer,” he said in an interview.

Facility now called Ontario Shores
Centre for Mental Health Sciences
BY PARVANEH PESSIAN
ppessian@durhamregion.com
WHITBY -- The Whitby Mental Health Centre will soon be reborn with
a new identity that will better reflect the hospital’s key goals.
Members of the facility board unveiled the new name, Ontario
Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences, along with a new mission
statement at the annual general meeting held Wednesday afternoon,
June 10.
“Our mandate in the health care system is to be a specialized resource
for treating patients with complex mental illness, doing innovative
research, training, and supporting professionals who work in mental
health,” said Brian Hart, chairman of the centre’s board of directors.
“As we enter the next era of our organization, it was timely for us to
align our brand and identity with our vision and create a new mission
statement that better reflects our purpose,” he added.
The new brand features a circular logo combining the letters O and
S within an image of a shoreline to demonstrate a path symbolic of a
patient’s recovery, while the bright colours convey energy, healing and
hope.
Extensive consultation with more than 500 staff, patients, physicians,
and volunteers resulted in the concept and development of the new
identity.

Council will decide
on bylaw in July
BY KRISTEN CALIS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Those planning to build
in rural Pickering should not have to
pay as much in development charges as
those in urban areas, says a Pickering
councillor.
Development charges recover a por-
tion of the growth-related costs associ-
ated with capital infrastructure needed
to service new development. A back-
ground study for Pickering’s develop-
ment charges bylaw amendment came
to council Monday night.
“Why should a person in rural areas
living 10 miles away from City services
(pay the same) as people right there?”
said Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick
Johnson.
He added most rural residents use
Hwy. 407 and regional roads.
Cam Watson, of Watson and Associ-
ates Economists Ltd., which prepared
the background study for the develop-
ment charges bylaw, said those charg-
es are there because people living in
rural areas use City roads, which require
upgrades and maintenance.
“They’re living on regional roads, but
I don’t accept your premise they’re not
using City roads,” he said to Coun. John-
son.
City treasurer and director of corpo-
rate services, Gil Paterson, reminded
Coun. Johnson, “The fact that they live
on a rural road is their choosing.”
Mr. Paterson said every municipality
has to charge a uniform rate for taxes
and development charges to keep gen-
eral order, otherwise the same argument
could be made in other areas.
“It’s a whole philosophy and it goes
much further than (roads),” he said.
Ward 1 City Councillor Jennifer
O’Connell questioned why commercial
businesses are exempt from all charg-
es except for those relating to roads.
For example, in 2008, a single detached
home carried a charge of $435 for the
cost of fire services, and commercial
developers were charged nothing.
Mr. Paterson said employees main-
ly use roads -- not recreation facili-
ties or libraries
for example. But
Coun. O’Connell
pointed those
companies need
storm water man-
agement and
if there’s a fire,
they’ll call Picker-
ing’s fire depart-
ment.
Pickering cur-
rently charges
lower rates than
Ajax, Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington
in both non-residential and residential
charges.
Randy Grimes, of IBI Group, repre-
senting the Seaton Landowners Group,
argued Seaton should be included in the
development charges study. The report
said Seaton will be subject to a separate
development charge bylaw or a revised
city-wide bylaw once the planning for
the neighbourhood has advanced.
Mr. Paterson said he’s taking all com-
ments into consideration, and the staff
report will come to city council on July
13.

WHITBY -- Testimony has begun in the
trial of a former Durham Region coach
accused of sexually assaulting a male
gymnast.
Ray Collingham is charged with offenc-
es relating to sexual assaults alleged to
have occurred when the Newcastle boy
was aged 11 to 15.
Superior Court Justice David Salmers
is hearing the case without a jury.
The first witness for the Crown was the
boy’s mother, who testified she reported
her suspicions of abuse to police after
sharing a home with Mr. Collingham,
who also coached the boy, in Newcastle
several years ago. A court order prohib-
its publishing information that might
identify the alleged victim.
The woman rejected a suggestion by
defence lawyer Graham Clark she had
been motivated by jealousy that grew
out of the close bond struck between Mr.
Collingham and the boy.
But she did say their relationship
caused tensions.
“He was constantly getting in the
way of my parenting my own son,” the
woman said of Mr. Collingham.
Mr. Collingham has pleaded not guilty
to the charges against him.

coming out,” Mr. Clark said outside

DURHAM -- As part of ongoing West Nile
virus surveillance, the Durham Region Health
Department will be monitoring regional and
municipally-owned catch basins throughout
the summer.
Starting in mid-June, the health department
will be working with a licensed larvicide con-
tractor, to administer catch basin larviciding
treatments using specially-equipped bicy-
cles.
“Residents can be assured that while using
bicycles to apply the larvicide is different this
year, the larviciding program is the same that
has occurred in previous years,” said Laura
Freeland, manager of environmental health
with Durham Region Health Department.
The health department is planning to con-
duct three catch basin treatments beginning
mid-June, with subsequent treatments in
mid-July and mid-August.
When monitoring results indicate the pres-
ence of mosquito larvae in a catch basin, it
will be treated with a larvicide product and
marked with a latex-based paint to let area
residents know it has been treated.
Each treatment period will be distinguished
with three different colours of paint; treat-
ments in mid-June will be marked with green
paint, mid-July will be marked with orange
paint and mid-August with blue paint.

Provincial government’s
a disaster
To the editor:
The provincial Liberals are an embar-
rassment. They continually say we will do
better. Well, that’s not good enough.
The latest scandal ends up costing us
almost $1 million for a few months’ work
by the CEO of eHealth.
Stop letting Dalton McGuinty have a free
ride.
They have been at the job for six years
and probation time is long over.
They have presided over the worst eco-
nomic downturn and do little more than
blame everyone else for their mess.
Call your local politician and demand
answers.
We need forward-thinking leaders that
have a plan to get Ontario working again.
It’s long overdue that we turf out the jelly-
fish and get some people with backbone
willing to stand up and lead Ontario.

EDUCATION
Too many make too much
at Durham District
School Board
To the editor:
The Durham District School Board need-
ed to report in 2007 that there were 121
salaries over $100,000 to the Ministry of
Finance, the so-called Sunshine List as it is
referred to. In the 2008 report the list had
increased to 152 reportable salaries over
$100K for a 26.88-per cent increase. There
is not one teacher or educational assistant
on the list.
Why can’t we shave a little off the top
before having to make cuts that drastically
affect the students?
The term “Best and the Brightest” does
not cut it, not in a board that sees declining
enrolment and declining test results.
When the list is available for 2009 will
it show less people on the 100K list? I see
senior salaries being maintained and/or
increased as the biggest constraint causing
textbooks and EAs to be cut. This is com-
pletely in the local board’s control and if
they lose the “Best and the Brightest,” so be
it. They are not there for the kids anyway.

AUTO SECTOR
GM, Chrysler bailout
leaves legacy of debt
for future generations
To the editor:
Re: CAW ‘didn’t have a choice,’: Buckley,
May 27
I read with interest a statement by the
CAW’s Chris Buckley that there’s not a lot
of public support for a bailout. No wonder.
After decades of making unreasonable
and unsustainable demands from all levels
in the North American auto industry, the
Big Three have finally been brought to their
knees. It seems this is not good enough,
now those taxpayers not employed by the
Big Three should be brought to their knees
as well. Although I feel sorry for those
affected by the shutdowns and token wage
reductions, I by no means feel respon-
sible. It seems the attitude of entitlement
has survived the negotiations and can only
serve to bleed those financing the bailout-
- us -- for years to come. Well, those of us
opposed to leaving a legacy of debt for our
children to deal with can still be heard. We
can speak with our chequebooks. We can
support the automakers where our appar-
ently less worthy neighbors are employed -
- Toyota, Honda, etc. In closing, I have only
one question to ask of the two levels of gov-
ernment involved. Have you lost your col-
lective minds?

Little drummer boy bangs skins for cancer charity gold
When young Darius Parsons decided
he wanted to drum up a little support for
himself, his parents told him he’d have to
do it for charity.
So the youngster, all of seven years old,
took that challenge literally.
He took his drum kit down to Big M
Burgers at Liverpool Road and Kros-
no Boulevard in Pickering and, with the
blessing of owner Chris Papatheodorou,
started slapping the skins on Thursday
night.
The cause: Drumming for a Cure for
Cancer, in honour of his grandma and
grandad, who both died from the horri-
ble disease.
As Mr. Papatheodorou says, “The kid
just came in one day and asked if he
could set up his drums and play, to raise
funds for the Canadian Cancer Society.”
Well, the kid has been such a hit, no
pun intended, that he raised a whop-
ping $1,5069.07 in just an hour of bash-
ing away.
And, by playing in conjunction with
the All Canadian Riders Club bike rally,
which also meets on Thursday night to
raise funds for charities, he was able to
pick up a little extra scratch for his cause.
The group holds a 50/50 draw and the
winner kicked in his winnings of around
$400, giving Darius almost $2,000 his first
night for just an hour of playing.
Not a bad effort for someone barely old
enough to see over the top of the high-
hat. But Darius is an old hand at the
drums. He’s taken lessons for the past
couple of years and wowed the crowd
with his renditions of versions of Hard to
Handle, Raise a Little Hell, and Born to Be
Wild. Even had to play Born to Be Wild a
second time to raucous applause.
You can be sure the bikers enjoyed that
last song even though it came out about
35 years before Darius was born.
Still, the young crowd-pleaser certainly
knows his audience and also knows how
to raise funds.
And he is far from done yet.
The little drummer boy has a not-so-
small challenge for all those cymbal
smackers out there.
He wants them to see if “you can bat-
tle me and see if you can raise as much
money as me.”
Sounds like the kind of battle where
nobody is a loser and everybody’s a win-
ner. So all you big, bad drummers out
there who think you have what it takes:
ready for a charity challenge?

Kids should be taught
what road signs mean,
say police
BY REKA SZEKELY
rszekely@durhamregion.com
WHITBY -- Kids from across Durham ped-
alled through a course on bike safety at the
Kids Safety Village in Whitby last weekend.
More than 200 people showed up for the
event, with kids bringing bicycles in every
colour, jazzed up with streamers, and stickers
on their helmets. Some of the kids breezed
through the course set up for them, while
others took a more cautious approach.
The event was organized by the Durham
Safety on Wheels Coalition, which includes
local police and the health department.
“The basic concern is the kids do not
understand what the road signs are so they’re
not obeying them,” said Officer Astrid Morse,
of the Durham Regional Police Services.
Among the features in the miniature town
in the Safety Village, located at Sir William
Stephenson Public School on Athol Street,
are a variety of signs including stop signs
and a railroad crossing. As the kids passed
through the course, they not only learned
to recognize the signs, but they also learned
balance and control by navigating through a
series of orange pylons.
Officer More said the kids can practise at
home, too.
“Put some pop cans down on the driveway
and they have their own obstacle course,” she
said.
Matt Lohmann, of Oshawa, brought his
almost four-year-old daughter Riley to the
event.
“She has enough bumps and bruises so we
figured the safety course would be a great
thing to learn,” said Mr. Lohmann.
Riley tackled the course like a trooper, ped-
alling as fast as her training wheels could
carry her.
Nine-year-old Jade Moffatt, of Whitby, was
a pro at navigating the course. She’s been to
the Safety Village before through a school
program.
“In Grade 3, I already came here and did
the bike thing,” she said.
Her mom, Michelle Moffatt, added that it
was a good way for her kids to refresh their
skills as biking season kicks off.
Before leaving the event, parents took their
children to a station where their helmets were
checked for fit and wear and tear.
Michelle Dawe, of Pickering, was told her
seven-year-old daughter Holly Naves would
need a new helmet.
“She needs a bigger helmet, even though
it’s new. That’s the reason I came, because I
knew it was questionable,” said Ms. Dawe.
Volunteers stressed the importance of
wearing helmets in preventing injuries. A
2001 health department survey found 74 per
cent of Durham youth aged five to 17 always
wore a helmet while biking, but by 2008, that
number had dropped to 71 per cent.
Once they were done biking, the kids also
had a chance to play in a jumping castle or do
some colouring before finishing up. Some of
the luckiest kids won new helmets and bikes
in a raffle.
At the exit, volunteer Zandra Parro laughed
as she relayed what one of her colleagues had
been telling the kids: “If you don’t run over a
policeman with your bike, you get a loot bag
and a certificate.”

WHITBY -- Holly Naves, 7, of Pickering, tried out the course at a bike safety event at
the Kids Safety Village in Whitby last Saturday. Holly was to get a new helmet after
staff at the event told her mom the one she was wearing was too small.

ANNIVERSARY
WindReach Farm to celebrate 20 years
Popular farm setting
catering to disabled
marks anniversary
on Saturday
BY JONATHAN VAN BILSEN
SCUGOG -- Many of us go through life
taking much for granted, yet others face
challenges the rest of us do not even
think about.
One such individual is Sandy (Alexan-
der) Mitchell, founder of WindReach Farm
in the southwest corner of Scugog. The
man behind the dream is as amazing as
the accomplish-
ment he created
and on June 13
WindReach Farm
will celebrate its
20th anniversary.
Mr. Mitchell
was born in Edin-
burgh, Scotland
toward the end of
the Second World
War. His family
was in the coal-
mining business
in Scotland and
western Cana-
da, but when the
British govern-
ment national-
ized the indus-
try, Mr. Mitchell’s
father moved to
Bermuda to oper-
ate the business
from there.
Mr. Mitchell, the
youngest of four
children and the
only boy, was born
with cerebral palsy,
a crippling disease,
which has never
held him back from
accomplishing what he wants out of life.
During his early years, Mr. Mitchell once
again found himself back living in Edin-
burgh, where he helped at his uncle’s farm
whenever he could and developed a keen
interest in agriculture.
Years later, Mr. Mitchell, undecided
about his future, still had a passion for agri-
culture. After attending McDonald’s Facul-
ty of Agriculture, part of McGill University
in Montreal, he purchased a 200-acre farm
near Arthur, Ontario but after three years
the farm was not turning a profit and Mr.
Mitchell was ready to throw in the towel.
He then spent a few years in Bermuda and
came to the realization that people like
himself, with special needs, would enjoy a
facility where they could visit and explore
a farming way of life.
At the same time, a property had been
found in the southwest corner of Scugog,
which would be perfect for Mr. Mitchell
and in 1985 Win-
dReach Farm
became his.
It took Mr.
Mitchell two years
and an extraor-
dinary amount
of his personal
capital to create
the beginning of
his vision, but on
June 16, 1989, Mr.
Mitchell invited
the first group
of special-needs
individuals to
visit his farm.
The farm did
well and became
a household word
in the special-
needs communi-
ty.
Apple trees were
specifically culti-
vated so the fruit
grows low to the
ground, providing
wheelchair access.
Wheelchair car-
riages, drawn by
horses, are also
available.
WindReach has been designed to be
accessible for everyone.
Doorways are wide, signage is in braille
and the equestrian centre is designed with
harnesses and steps so that everyone can
experience the joy of riding a horse.
In 1996, Mr. Mitchell opened WindReach
Bermuda. It’s a smaller property than the
Scugog farm, but catering to the same
needs with the same attention to detail.
“Now I can ride
my own horses in
two countries,” Mr.
Mitchell joked.
Mr. Mitchell has
been competing
in the Paralympics
games as an eques-
trian, participating
in Sydney, Austra-
lia in 2000, in Ath-
ens, Greece in 2004 and last year in Bei-
jing, China.
Mr. Mitchell has always been involved in
the community where he lives. The dedi-
cated work of Mr. Mitchell has not gone
unnoticed as he was awarded the Member
of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth
in 2002.
As for the upcoming celebration to
mark WindReach Farm’s two decades, Mr.
Mitchell has a lofty goal in mind.
“We want to have the biggest party Scu-
gog has ever seen,” Mr. Mitchell said.
As part of the festivities, WindReach
Farm will feature the world’s only hot-air,
wheelchair-accessible balloon, offering
rides to anyone wanting to rise high above
the property.
David Onley,
Lieutenant Gover-
nor of Ontario, has
agreed to attend
and dedicate the
opening of a Foun-
dation Garden.
Diane Dupuy has
come forth with
her Famous People
Players to perform
throughout the day.
Dozens of artists, both local and inter-
national, will provide music, dancing and
singing.
And, food stations will offer savoury
treats.
Best of all, it’s free.
WindReach Farm is at 312 Townline
Road, just west of Hwy. 12. Visit www.win-
dreachfarm.org.

P
Pickering.
“The kid just came in one day
and asked if he could set up his
drums and play, to raise funds
for the Canadian Cancer Soci-
ety,” he said in a press release.
So, he told him to go ahead
and suggested it be in conjunc-
tion with the All Canadian Rid-
ers Club bike rally that takes
place at the burger joint Thurs-
day nights.
So, Dari-
us started the
Drumming for
a Cure fund-
raiser.
He opened
his Big M solo
show last
month, play-
ing to back-
ground music,
with Hard to
Handle by the Black Crowes and
followed with tunes such as Born
to Be Wild, Raise a Little Hell and
Black Velvet. Although Darius’s
favourite bands are Linkin Park,
Billy Talent and Evanescence,
he played a classic rock set to
appeal to the bikers and others
stopping by. And, to his glee, the
crowd cheered for an encore.
“I had to play Born to be Wild
again,” he said.
Darius has discovered his
favourite part of performing live
is “how they cheer.”
He ended up raising $1,569.07
in just an hour of playing. The
bike rally also raises funds for
charities, so the winner of the
50/50 draw donated his win-
nings of around $400 to the
cause.
Ward 2 Regional Councillor
Bill McLean was so impressed
with Darius’s performance that
he called the News Advertiser to
share the news.
“It was really dynamic the way
he played those drums,” Coun.
McLean said. “It was hard to pic-
ture a seven-year-old kid play-
ing the drums so well.”
He found it refreshing and
mentioned the City is trying to
get Darius to play at the annual

“It’s really nice to see some-
one that young so caring and
thoughtful that he took it upon
himself to do this for unselfish
reasons,” Coun. McLean said.
Darius began taking drum-
ming lessons at Legend Music
Enterprises in Pickering with
Frank Russell a couple of years
ago, but his parents could tell he
had an ear for music before that.
While Darius’s two older broth-
ers, Dakota
and Keegan,
are athletic, the
drummer said
he plays sports
“not as much.”
“He
always messed
around on the

Parsons said.
And
now, he has a
charitable challenge for other
drummers to “battle me and see
if you can raise as much money
as me.”

WE DO BRACES FOR ALL AGES
(NC)-Want to improve your health? Among the
three best habits you can develop are talk, listen
and ask. According to the Canadian Patient
Safety Institute, studies show that the more
informed you are about your health, the better
your health outcomes. That means being in-
volved in your health care decisions, says Anne
Coghlan, President of the Federation of Health
Regulatory Colleges of Ontario (FHRCO).
“All regulated health professionals are re-
quired to keep you informed. But part of being a
smart health consumer is proactively discussing
options and approaches around your care,” says
Coghlan.
Here are the three keys.
• Talk. Tell your provider about any relevant
treatments, medications, or conditions (previ-
ous or current). Mention if you’re seeing other
health care professionals, and discuss how your
provider might work in tandem with them. Inform
your provider of any changes in your health or
reactions to treatment (whether good or bad).
• Ask. Ask as many questions as needed until
you feel comfortable with treatment options,
instructions or advice. If you’re unclear, have
your provider explain your condition in simple
words. When dealing with multiple health care
professionals, get their various perspectives on
your issue. You want a complete picture in order
to make an informed decision.
• Listen. Pay attention to what your provider
is saying; get clarifi cation as needed, or bring
along a family member or friend to help ensure
you understand. Write down important informa-
tion, to remind yourself or share with others (e.g.
family, other providers) who can help with your
health decisions. Follow your provider’s instruc-

Information is good for your health
Three keys to making the best health care decisions
tions or suggestions; the best decisions are meaningless if you
don’t act on them.
“You rely on your health care provider or team for their ex-
pertise, but you also need to be a participant in your health,”
Coghlan says. “By sharing and seeking as much information as
possible, you’ll be in the best position to make sensible deci-
sions about your care.”
We Care About Your Care. FHRCO comprises Ontario’s 22
health regulatory colleges, which govern almost 260,000 health
professionals. The colleges support these professionals in pro-
viding the people of Ontario with safe, competent
and ethical health care; and hold them account-
able for their conduct and practice. For more on

Return home
Saturday to face
Owen Sound
BY BRAD KELLY
bkelly@durhamregion.com
AJAX -- Just when the Ajax-
Pickering Rock has found a way
to win on the road, it’s returning
home.
Not that the Sr. B lacrosse club
is complaining, mind you.
The Rock registered its second
win of the season last Friday in
Norwood, erasing a couple of
four-goal deficits to pull out a
12-11 decision in overtime.
“It just felt like the guys were
catching on a little more to what
we’ve been trying to preach
in practices,” said head coach
Jim Veltman, adding his club
employed better ball and player
movement on offence, resulting
in quality chances.
The Rock persevered despite
trailing 6-2 at one point in the
second, and 8-4 again in the
third before rallying with five
unanswered, the fifth with just
1:30 to go in the game, to move
ahead 9-8. Norwood tied it 9-9
with just a minute to go, and was
actually up 11-10 in overtime
before the Rock rallied with a
pair, including the winner from
Mark Craig.
In addition to the improve-
ments on offence, Veltman
pointed to the team’s condition-
ing as a key factor in the win.
“It was 8-4 in the third period
and our legs were just starting to
kick in and we really dominated
the rest of that game,” he said. “I
felt even in overtime it looked
like we were dominating. It just
felt like we were ahead of them
in all aspects of the game as far
as conditioning.”
Jonas Derks had a big night for
the Rock with a pair of goals and
five assists, while Jamie Plunkett
scored four times and chipped
in with a couple of assists. Scor-
ing once each were Mike Vertol-
li, Clem D’Orazio, Garett Kerr,
Bryan Johnson and Garrett Kikot.
Travis Bland had three assists, as
did Craig, D’Orazio and Kikot.
With a 2-4-1 record and hav-
ing played six of seven games on
the road, the Rock returns to the
Ajax Community Centre on Sat-
urday for a date with the league’s
best team from Owen Sound
which has compiled a perfect 9-
0-0 record.
“We were disappointed with
our result last time in Owen
Sound, so this time we hope to
show more of what we are made
of,” said Veltman, referring to a
19-7 setback recently. “We feel
we’re a good team. We have to
all play well to have success. We
showed in Norwood that when
we play like that, we’re a pretty
tough team to contend with.”
Playing a home game this time
out will be a welcomed advan-
tage, said Veltman.
“It’s a big floor at the ACC and
it’s more conducive to our style
which is more up-tempo, run-
and-gun style.”
Game time is 7 p.m.
Pickering sprinter
will be in 100m race
against Usain Bolt
BY BRAD KELLY
bkelly@durhamregion.com
TORONTO -- When Anson Henry
sets his feet into the blocks for the
start of the men’s 100m race at
the Festival of Excellence tonight,
he knows the fan base will over-
whelmingly be pulling for Jamai-
ca’s Usain Bolt.
The two staunch supporters he
will have, however, are his mom
and dad. And that’s only because
their son is in the race.
“My parents are Jamaican and
they are really big Usain Bolt fans
when I’m not in the race,” said
the 30-year-old Pickering native
on Wednesday during a phone

Rock find way to win on road
interview from Toronto. “Even my
mom was joking with me, saying,
‘I’m Usain’s number one fan. Just
not when you’re in the race.’ They
are big Usain fans.
“Hopefully some of the Jamai-
can fans will give me some love,
too, because my parents are
Jamaican and it’s in my blood.”
Henry will be pitted against the
No. 1 sprinter in the world in the
marquee event at the Festival of
Excellence, being held at the Var-
sity Centre in Toronto. The 100m
race is scheduled to start at 8:21
p.m.
Since representing Canada
at the Olympic Games in Bei-
jing, China in the 100m and the
4x100m relay last August, Henry
has made a couple of changes. He
switched coaches, resulting in his
move from California, where he
has been stationed the past cou-
ple of years, to Arlington, Texas.
The change has had some posi-
tive results.
“I’m in really good shape. I’ve
just had a few hamstring issues,
but I’m feeling good and ready to
get my season going.”
He has competed in a couple of
events leading into tonight and
will use this race as a stepping
stone for the Canadian Cham-
pionships later this month, fol-
lowed by the World Champion-
ships in Germany later this sum-
mer.
He’s excited about racing so
close to home, but not intimidat-
ed by the fact he will be running
against Bolt.
“I’ve been in a lot of big races in
my career,” he said. “It’s good the
attention he is bringing out here.
From that standpoint, that bene-
fits me.”
He plans on returning to Texas
on Friday for more training before
making the trek back up here at
the end of the month for Nation-
als.
A couple of other Durham
Region athletes will also be com-
peting tonight, as Whitby’s Priscil-
la Lopes-Schliep and Pickering’s
Perdita Felicien will race against
each other in the 100m hurdles.
The News Advertiser will be at the
event with full details appearing
in Friday’s edition and online at
www.newsdurhamregion.com.
